FALLing Back into a Healthier You!

Autumn marks a fresh start and a season of transformation. It is the perfect time to focus on your health and boost your immunity in preparation for the colder months ahead. By adopting a few simple habits, you can FALL back into a healthier you and strengthen your body’s defenses.

First, adopt a balanced and nutritious diet. Embrace the abundance of seasonal produce like apples, squash, and root vegetables. These are not only delicious but also packed with essential vitamins, minerals and fibre. Incorporate immune-boosting foods such as garlic, ginger, and turmeric into your meals to enhance your body’s defense mechanisms against colds and flu.

Next, participate in regular physical activity to keep your body strong and healthy. Take advantage of outdoor activities like hiking, cycling, or walking. These activities not only help strengthen your muscles and improve cardiovascular health but also provide a boost to your mental well-being.

Another crucial aspect of maintaining a healthy immune system involves getting enough restful sleep. As the days get shorter, prioritize a consistent sleep schedule and create a calming bedtime routine. Turn off electronic devices, dim the lights, and engage in relaxing activities like reading or taking a warm bath. Aim for at least six hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to recover and recharge.

Autumn can be a busy time with back-to-school schedules and work commitments, but taking care of your mental health is equally important. Incorporate stress-relief techniques into your daily routine, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling. These practices can help reduce anxiety levels and improve your overall well-being.

Oxidative Stress and Diabetes

What is oxidative stress?

Trillions of chemical reactions are carried out in your body’s cells every day that keep you alive and healthy. The chains of these reactions, a.k.a. oxidation, generate thousands of free radicals that bind to cell components causing permanent damage to cells, tissues and organs.

Your body has natural antioxidants that normally neutralize these highly reactive free radicals and stop the damage. Oxidative stress is the condition that results from your body losing the ability to maintain the balance between free radicals and antioxidants.

Benefits of antioxidant-rich foods or supplements

• Reducing oxidative stress

• Supporting eye, brain, cognitive, immune and skin health

• Supporting a healthy aging process

• Aiding in inflammation-fighting

Effects of oxidative stress on type 2 diabetics

Insulin resistance and pancreatic beta cell dysfunction are the common characteristics for type 2 diabetes. In this condition, there is an excess of glucose in the bloodstream (hyperglycemia) which causes the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antioxidants in your body counteract ROS in order to maintain a stable cell environment. When there is an imbalance between the ROS production and cellular antioxidant system, it leads to oxidative stress and subsequently results in the development of common health complications including diabetes and cardiovascular issues.

How can antioxidants benefit diabetics

Since many studies have shown that oxidative stress plays a pivotal role in the development of diabetic complications, researchers are looking into options of using antioxidants – either from food sources or as a supplement – in the prevention of or potential reversal of damage from oxidative stress. In 2022, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover clinical trial was conducted to assess if an antioxidant-rich green tea extract would alleviate intestinal inflammation in adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of conditions which includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol/triglyceride levels. The research unexpectedly found that fasting glucose decreased on both MetS and weight-stable healthy individuals. This suggests that gut-level anti-inflammatory activities of green tea extract may improve glycemic control with reductions in intestinal inflammation contributing to enhanced insulin sensitivity.

ProPeas

I don’t like having breakfast early in the morning, but my mom always made me eat before school. We would argue about it until I told her I would rather drink ProPeas mixed with Garden Trio. I feel full until my recess at 10:30 am, when I eat my snack. I drink the same nutritious mix after school and when I don’t have time to eat before a baseball game. I will keep taking ProPeas so I can hit another home run!
