With breathtaking use of interactive dance and video this piece shows us the South African Reed Dance – a colourful traditional celebration, originally intended to promote respect for young women and preserve the custom of girls remaining virgins until marriage. It’s a compelling examination of the manipulation of cultural heritage by those in power.

Directed by Anthony Silverston (2013), 85 min. In this colourful animation, Khumba, a half-striped zebra is born into an insular, superstitious herd and is immediately ostracised by the rest of the zebras, except for Tombi, a feisty tomboy. When he is blamed for the drought, Khumba leaves the only home he has ever known in search of the magic waterhole where legend has it, the first zebras got their stripes. FREE, All ages

Drawing inspiration from the treatment of political prisoners on South Africa’s notorious Robben Island, this award-winning dance work uses the concept of a prison cell as a metaphor for mental imprisonment: ‘Prison is designed to break one’s spirit and destroy one’s resolve…all with the idea of stamping out that spark that makes each of us human and each of us who we are.’ Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
