Welcome to the Albany This spring we present and host a diverse, vibrant and intriguing mix of events at the Albany and off site. There are a wide range of themes and interests covered, from politics and money, power and masculinity, family and personal struggles, to survival and recovery. The stories and experiences featured reflect what it’s like to live in Britain right now, celebrating our differences as well as what we share. As ever at the Albany, the audience plays a central role. This is most obvious where we’re invited to be part of the action, such as in The Money (p15) or Play Dough (p3), but also in the unique relationship created with an audience in Backstage in Biscuitland (p11) or many of the family shows. There are multiple opportunities to take part or try something new. As well as theatre from across the UK, the music programme ranges from intimate club nights to jazz, electronica, hip hop and grime. There’s a variety of events this spring that you’re unlikely to find in any other London venue. We’re really excited about what’s on offer at the Albany, and we look forward to inviting you in.

THE CROWS PLUCKED YOUR SINEWS

Saturday 6 February, 7.30pm (doors)

SARAH GILLESPIE With support from renowned country blues songstress Siobhan Parr

BSL Interpreted Thur 4 Feb

Written and directed by Hassan Mahamdallie May 2011: A young Somali woman sits in the dark of a Woolwich council house watching the assassination of Osama Bin Laden unfold on TV. Upstairs her ailing grandmother is talking to ghosts. August 1913: A woman dervish warrior searches the body of a Tommy in British Somaliland. In the morning the killing will begin.

Anglo-American singer songwriter Sarah Gillespie has received international critical acclaim for her jazz, folk and blues albums and trademark poetic lyricism. With a full band, Gillespie will debut a mix of songs from her new project (due for release in 2016) as well as revisiting her back catalogue.

‘Is she the new Joni Mitchell? PJ Harvey? Bob Dylan even? She recalls all three but Gillespie’s spiky lyrical gift is utterly distinctive.’ METRO

With live music and stunning visuals this theatrical exploration of the violence of empire and the ‘Fiercely articulate.’ poetry of resistance stars Yusra Warsama. The 5 March performance will feature guest musicians, THE GUARDIAN poets and food in celebration of Somalia’s cultural traditions.

TIATA FAHODZI PRESENTS

STONECRABS THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE ALBANY PRESENTS

I KNOW ALL THE SECRETS IN MY WORLD

HEADWAYS

i know all the secrets in my world is a play about what happens when speaking is impossible. A story that breaks your heart and then pieces it together, putting plasters touched with tiny kisses over the cracks.

Produced by eight emerging directors, Headways is a festival that presents a kaleidoscopic collection of plays, each director with their own story to tell. Through plays that reflect the dynamism of relationships and human emotion, they promise to make you laugh and cry, dealing in both horror and in wonder, and exploring the multiple truths that are held in a single story.

This universal tale of love and loss is a duet between a father and a son told through sound and movement. Set in the familial home after the loss of their wife and mother, it journeys through their grief meditating on fantasy, gender roles, disconnection, absence and the permanence of love. Tiata Fahodzi is the UK’s leading African theatre company, producing world-class theatre that reflects the changing African diaspora in contemporary Britain.

A RAISIN IN THE SUN Written by Lorraine Hansberry

‘Never before, the entire history of theatre, has so much of the truth of black people’s lives been seen on the stage.’ JAMES BALDWIN

The Younger family are living in a small apartment that fit them when they were half their number: their hopes, dreams and aspirations on hold for years within the four walls and around the kitchen table. But when a chance to change the course of their future emerges, the pressures of opportunity threaten to overwhelm them. A ferocious portrayal of working class life on the cusp of the civil rights era, Lorraine Hansberry’s landmark drama bursts with intense family conflict, racial politics and social consciousness.

TOURETTESHERO PRESENTS

CONTAINED

BACKSTAGE IN BISCUITLAND BSL Interpreted Wed 23 Mar

Testing testing, my name is Liam, testing, I am 28, testing testing and I live in Bradford, testing. Contained is a vibrant, compelling and personal new show from England’s largest professional learning-disabled theatre company: nine interwoven true stories about family and friendships, love and loss, the everyday and the extraordinary. The head teacher looked at me and said ‘I’m afraid you have to leave this school. There is no place for you here.’ Combining live performance, film, photography, music and dance, Contained explores those small moments in life that suddenly become meaningful: moments that teach us about ourselves, and the world that we live in.

Jess Thom has Tourettes, a condition that makes her say ‘biscuit’ 16,000 times a day. Her unusual neurology gives her a unique perspective on life; one she’s about to unleash on the world. Accompanied by her assistant Chopin, Jess intertwines comedy, puppetry, singing and incredible tics to explore spontaneity, creativity, life with a disability, and things you never knew could make you laugh. No two shows can ever be the same. Jess is neurologically incapable of staying on script, and that’s when the anarchic fun begins.

UNTIL YOU HEAR THAT BELL

( THE STORY IS NOT )

SET IN STONE

Written and performed by Sean Mahoney

How far back in the story do you have to go to take another path?

Three minutes boxing. One minute break. Three minutes boxing. Try to impress dad. Three minutes boxing. Play Sega Dreamcast. Three minutes boxing. Parents break up. Three minutes boxing. Fail your GCSEs. Three minutes boxing. Sing in a car. Three minutes boxing. Break.

This is a show about stories. It begins with a chance encounter in a mythical library. Soon it spills out on to the street, heads back to ancient Greece, catches a lift in a car on the way to a music festival and takes a meal at a Turkish café.

Told through spoken word and within timed boxing rounds, Until You Hear That Bell is a story about amateur boxing and family. It’s about doing something for ten years, and slowly getting good at it.

TWO DESTINATION LANGUAGE PRESENTS

RIA HARTLEY PRESENTS

NEAR GONE

UNTOUCHABLE

Two performers have a difficult story to tell. They come on stage and launch themselves into an hour long attempt to put into words the utterly unspeakable.

‘Growing up in the ‘90s, in a violent home on an East Midlands council estate, wasn’t what I would have chosen for an upbringing. But who gets to choose?’

Delivered in English and Bulgarian, with pounding gypsy-inspired music, this beautiful performance fills an empty space with two performers, hundreds of fresh flowers and a storm of emotion. A performance piece that packs a punch – transforming your very sense of what it is to be a mother, a father, a child. And you’ll leave more fully alive than ever.

Untouchable is a piece about hope, endurance and survival. It’s about finding the courage to speak out. It’s about the often hidden realities of everyday life that happen behind closed doors.

Near Gone won a Total Theatre Award (2014) and the Pulse Fringe Suitcase Prize (2013).

Whilst tender and courageous, this piece has guts and grit offering an insight into a complex multi-racial family living in a world of abuse. Untouchable looks hopefully at recovery for a family in constant negotiation with the repercussions of a violent history. Each performance will be followed by a Q&A with creator and performer, Ria Hartley. A Contact Flying Solo Commission.

Dynamic Ticket Pricing

Our fully licenced café is a great place to eat, drink, work and play. Enjoy affordable locally sourced lunches, great cakes, snacks and hot and cold drinks. Open daily Monday to Saturday and evenings and Sundays in line with our events programme.
