Autumn 2014 is one of our biggest seasons to date: a cultural feast from some of the most interesting artistic voices around. We launch in partnership with the Deptford Lounge, one of our two sister library venues, with Invisible Flock’s Bring the Happy (p.3). For three weeks, the Deptford Lounge will be occupied by artists and a host of public interventions to create a giant 3D map of Deptford’s happiness. At the end of the mapping, the stories gathered will be transformed into a unique and tender theatre and music show back here at the Albany. We’re proud to be the home of Fun Palaces 2014 (p.9), the biggest nationwide celebration of arts and culture since the Cultural Olympiad, taking place in over 100 venues on Joan Littlewood’s 100th birthday weekend. Joan Littlewood was one of the 20th Century’s most significant theatre makers, and Fun Palaces 2014 brings to life her vision for what she called ‘laboratories of fun’. Deptford will be the site of its very own Fun Palace, and on Sunday 5 October, Source, an outdoor theatre and circus spectacle, will take to the streets. We’re also starting a new relationship with 21st Century theatrical pioneers, Belarus Free Theatre, who will be bringing the world premiere of Price of Money (p.4), which explores the role of money, and whether it is possible to live without it. This extraordinary company, exiles of Europe’s last dictatorship, has astonished audiences around the world, gaining champions like Jude Law and Tom Stoppard. Extending our pioneering project Meet Me at the Albany, our artist led day club for the over 60s, we will present Bold, a festival of the arts and older people (p.5), which includes Home Sweet Home, a performance inspired by the stories of 200 older people from Deptford, Stockton and Bradford; and Afrovibes (p.13) is back with a range of the very best contemporary performance from South Africa. We like to think that there’s something for everyone at the Albany. Don’t miss it. Gavin Barlow

Wednesday 10 December 2014 - Sunday 4 January 2015 A family goes on an expedition of a lifetime – running down the grassy bank, wading through the cold river, squelching over the oozy mud, stumbling into the dark forest, then peering into a cave… what will they find? Little Angel Theatre brings Michael Rosen’s thrilling and funny adventure to life in this entrancing puppetry production directed by Peter Glanville and with music and lyrics by renowned singer-songwriter Barb Jungr.

BRING THE HAPPY

Bring the Happy is an ongoing project about happiness, an attempt to map moments and memories of happiness in Deptford and across the country. A first kiss, a lost love, a longed for baby, childhood heroes, a proposal, a dance, a chance encounter – where did it happen and how happy did it make you feel on a scale from 1 to 10? For three weeks, Invisible Flock will occupy Deptford Lounge and transform it into a giant 3D map of the local area. You are invited to explore the map, discover what makes others happy and where, and in turn, submit your own happy moment or memory to add to the ever-growing database of the country’s happiness. At the end of three weeks the memories collected will be taken and transformed into a music and theatre performance at the Albany, that attempts an extravagant portrait of happiness, as the 1000s of memories collected are retold in all of their beautiful, sometimes tragic and sometimes ridiculous glory.

PRICE OF MONEY

Money controls the world we live in. Whether you have it or not, the power of money is a driving force, determining lives, characters and actions. In this brand new production, Belarus Free Theatre explores how theatre has depicted money throughout the ages: from ancient Greece, through the Elizabethan golden-age to today’s fractured economy. Working in the genre of devised documentary theatre, Price of Money is based on Aristophanes’ Plutus, the first political satire on money from ancient Athens, and Ben Johnson’s work on the emerging ethics of capitalism, The Staple of News. The show will mark the start of a ongoing relationship between Belarus Free Theatre and the Albany, which will see the company working closely with local communites.

A post–show discussion will be held after the show, Saturday 20 September, 2.30pm £14 – £16 / £10 – £12 Concs (This event is dynamically priced, see p.20 )

HOMESWEET HOME Written by Emma Adams Directed by Tom Wright

What happens when you have to leave your own home sweet home and find yourself in a different kind of home altogether? A home where anything can happen, where the day-to-day reality of caring and being cared for brings you up against bursts of beauty, high drama, Bollywood dancing and even a little magic. You are invited on an exciting journey to explore a side of ‘the home’ which will change the way you think about getting old forever. Home Sweet Home is based on the true stories and experiences of over 200 older people from Bradford, Deptford and Stockton.

FOR AGEING

Fringe Review Highly Recommended Show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

I’m sorry to do this so early in the show. It’s really quite rude of me. But do you mind if I ask you how old you are? A Cure for Ageing is a piece about being young and foolish, and becoming old and wise. Or about being young and wise, and becoming old and foolish. It asks how we can talk more honestly about ageing, drawing together true personal accounts and shameless speculation in a celebration of life and an attempt to fall in love with our own decline.

HACKNEY THE SPINNING COLLIERY BAND WHEEl

Since its debut in 2011, this brass juggernaut has blown its way into the public consciousness with its cunning cover versions and catchy original recordings.

The Spinning Wheel is an international collaboration between New York hip-hop theatre artist Baba Israel and Artistic Director of Unfinished Business, Leo Kay.

Over the past two years, the band has earned itself an army of loyal fans and has played at some very special events. From live collaborations with the late Amy Winehouse, and more recently Eliza Doolittle, to headlining the Manchester Jazz Festival and Durham Brass Festival, and being the only fully live band to play at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, they haven’t paused for breath.

Combining spoken word, video and live music by Yako 440, this dynamic show celebrates the life of Baba’s late father, Steve Ben Israel, a New York jazz musician, stand-up comic, countercultural activist and member of the iconic Living Theatre.

With a tongue-in-cheek, yet respectful, nods to the great tradition of British brass bands, Hackney Colliery’s influences are as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name.

Drawing from Steve Ben’s extraordinary archive, The Spinning Wheel explores pacifist activism, loss and legacy, and asks, what remains of the movements that shook the Western world and how can we be transformed by the legacies we inherit?

“I first came to the Albany when I was 15 after I started to DJ and produce my own music. I came to one of the events put on by Uncover Music and got in touch to see if I could join. We got straight into organising our own events, getting experience booking acts and managing artists. Over the last few years, the nights have got bigger and I have started my own independent music night in Deptford. I also got my first paid job as a Front of House Assistant at the Albany which I fit around my studies. I have had access to professional artists like Illum Sphere, Chunky and Moxie (BBC 1xtra), and I have been given my first big performance opportunity on the Albany stage. Without Uncover, I would never have thought of music as a career choice, but I am now ambitious to work in the industry.”
