“ What the Albany means to me…
“
Welcome to The Albany, our new look brochure will let you know what is going on over the autumn and all the ways you can get involved. We have some extraordinary shows coming up this season.
Having spent some of my more youthful years in Deptford, The Albany is a special place to me. It’s been amazing to witness and experience the various stages it has gone through. I have seen some great bands (reggae, soul and jazz) and comedy nights there as well as friends’ wedding receptions – the venue is versatile and fun whatever the occasion. Socially, it’s a venue that cares, and one of very few in London that is truly welcoming and accessible to all, a real hidden gem. I am honoured to be involved at such a pivotal point in the venue’s history. I hope to help bring new ideas, new contacts and new energy to the Albany, that will propel the organisation into a new phase and go in the direction we want to – onwards and upwards. Yvonne Thompson CBE, Chair, Board of Trustees

Q& A
GIG OF
WORLD PREMIERE
DON LETTS Grammy Award Winning Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both film and music. He came to notoriety in the 70’s as the DJ that turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. From the days of Punk to the present, he’s always been drawn towards musical projects. We had a chance to talk to Don about his vision for the event…
“
Q: “How does the event tie into the bicentenary of the abolition of the Slave Trade?” A: “Although it’s important to know the history I am more concerned with the LEGACY!” Q: “What was your reasoning for putting these artists together (Skinnyman, Mad Flow and Malika Booker)?” A: “The best way to reach the youth is through the youth.”
“
Q: “What can people expect when they come to the event?” A: “Information, communication… inspiration”

Speakers’ Corner
Street sounds and stories find where freedom lives. Speakers’ Corner is a new live music theatre performance, spearheaded by film and music maverick Don Letts that seeks a contemporary response to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade. Seven cutting edge lyricists including rapper and poet Skinnyman, human beatboxer Mad Flow and spoken word artist Malika Booker, will examine the concept of slavery in 2007’s multi-cultural generation. From the experience of political asylum through to the influence of hip hop’s bling culture, each writer will question what it means to be free today. Giving you a choice of three nights to attend…book early to avoid disappointment…!

Profile
From the Boards …to the Board 32 year old local resident, actor and recent addition to the Albany Board of Trustees Ben Bennett, tells how he progressed from performer to Albany Board member. Q: “Can you tell us a little about your background?” A: “I’ve been living in Deptford since 1978, I’ve seen many changes in the area and at The Albany since then. I wasn’t always the best student but spending time at The Albany allowed me to meet people and find a path in life that wasn’t offered to me by traditional education…I soon realised I wanted to be an actor and got a place at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.” Q: “Who’s on the Board?” A: “A mix of local residents, creative individuals and leading business people from all generations and cultural backgrounds....” Q: “What do you want to do with your influence now?” A: “The Albany CEO, Gavin Barlow, has done a sterling job of turning the space round from an under-utilised facility into a vibrant community hub in a short period of time. We all want to re-energise the space! I especially want to target young people by providing facilities for them to grow...as I did... kids need spaces where they can be creative and meet people that can make a real difference to their lives...”
