Lewisham People’s Day – Spotlight
Q& A
What are you working on at the moment? At present I am working on a collection of new songs. I am not quite sure whether I want to call it an album, but I am going through the process of pulling teeth to make the music and then write the songs and its very anti-social stuff, its like being locked in a cave that has electricity. Who has influenced you both in spoken word & music? My taste in music has grown, when I was young, hip hop was the most exciting. But now as I’m older I find myself going back to listening to old progressive rock groups like Yes and Triumvirate, its got madder as I got older. I was swept away by people like Malika Booker and Roger Robinson THEY INSPIRED ME TO EVEN COME TO SPOKEN WORD EVENTS. It was thru them I witnessed poets like Francesca Beard and Stacey Makishi who just ROCK ME EVERYTIME - this is art!! Randy Crawford, Carl McIntosh from Loose Ends, Joni Mitchell would have me star struck in the studio.. real talk!!!! You can discover their music at any given moment and always feel like they were just doing what made them feel happy and what made them proud. That’s what I want to happen in the music I make, I never wanna be embarrassed by my creations. You’ve been involved in the spoken word arena for a long time, what do you think its appeal is? The appeal of spoken word to me is honesty. I am not really into this love Jones type set of poetry that people attach themselves to. A seven year old can step on stage and say the most proud thing about his pet tortoise, that is poetry to me, not the revolution must be televised ten times a night ... noooooo!!!! Spoken word is the space between what people really think in their head but never say and you overhearing a conversation between two people on a bus. An informal look beyond someone’s dream into what they would like to say!!! What’s the best thing about performing live at an outdoor festival like the upcoming Lewisham People’s Day? The best thing about performing outside at the Lewisham Festival is the PEOPLE ..... THE BEST THING OF ALL IS BEING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE THAT WANT YOU TO BE THERE!!!! NOTHING BEATS THAT! NOT EVEN SEX!!!
