February - May 2015
Theatre at its very best is intimate and thrillingly live. That’s why this Spring we’ve gathered some of the most compelling theatre makers in the country, and given you the chance to get up close and personal with them. Often sharing frank accounts of their own experiences first hand, these shows explore celebrity, identity, body image and what it means to live well. We present the world premiere of The Singing Hypnotist (p.17), a show in which the stage hypnotism routine is reinvented for the modern age by the ever brilliant, ever hilarious, Chris Green, of Ida Barr and Tina C fame. Third Angel’s The Life and Loves of A Nobody (p.2) is a ‘sublime’ exploration of the pursuit of celebrity, and Phenomena: A Beginner’s Guide to Love and Physics (p.3) is a new work created by our Uncover Theatre in trademark riotous, energetic style, proving that performance by young people belongs on the main stages of our arts venues. Canada Water is set to explode with theatrical stories: Clod Ensemble bring us absurdist ghost story The Red Chair (p.9) and Yve Blake’s Then (p.10) explores who people feel they used to be, in a vibrant collage of memories. Deptford Lounge, just over the road from the Albany, presents two brilliant shows for kids to get involved in: Meeting Mr Boom! (p.8), an adventure that takes place on a bouncy castle (audience bouncing encouraged) and The Boy Who Bit Picasso (p.8), the true story of a friendship between a young boy and one of the world’s greatest artists, with lots of messy art making. Music comes from the irresistible Riot Jazz (p.14), soul legend Omar (p.19), folk phenomenon Kathryn Tickell (p.4) and catch the music stars of tomorrow at Goldsmiths’ PureGold (p.19). And In a Pikkle return with their pop-up restaurants and all-new Bajan Soul Food and Music (p.22), bringing the tastes and sounds of Barbados to SE8.

THE LIFE AND LOVES PRETTY
OF A NOBODY UGLY
Rachel always wanted to be a star. Rachel wanted to run away with the circus. And have her name in lights. And escape from this house. And she dreamed of the future. But people can be ugly. The closer they are the uglier they get. And there’s nobody closer to yourself than yourself. Life is a juggling act. Love is a highwire. Try to do both at once, and it’s a long way down. But even if the act goes wrong, you can still be famous for the fall. Wednesday 4 February BSL performance Post show discussion

This show is about you rating me based solely on my looks... It is also about a recent worldwide trend of teenage girls posting videos on YouTube asking viewers to rate their looks. And what happened when I tried it myself. In 2013, I lived online as three teenage alter-egos. Pretty Ugly follows my trail of research into how Generation YouTube uses the ever widening field of social networking to reach others. It is about our obsessions, and pretensions, and teenage girls - but don’t let that put you off. It is about you and me and the internet.

RED CHAIR
Let us tell you a strange tale that did unfold someplace in the glum north o’the warld, where there lived a Man who could not stop eating, a Woman doomed to cook his meals and one ‘inveesible child’.
Have you paid Canada Water Culture Space a visit? It is situated right next to the exit of Canada Water London Overground and Jubilee Line Station. Hidden inside a stateof-the-art library you’ll find a theatre, exploding with new ideas, comedy, music and theatre. Here are a few of this season’s highlights. 9
Told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a wee dram of whisky to oil the way and a musical score that rolls in like mist over the hills, The Red Chair lies somewhere between a Grimm’s Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children.

NEW MOON
An evening of music and dance premieres from choreographers Julia Cheng, Quang Kien Van, and composers Ruth Chan and Andy Leung, during Chinese New Year. Cheng’s Silver Moon trio explores roundness, harmony and the challenge of healing broken connections. Kien Van’s Lunar Orbits trio mines ancient mysteries and moon myths, with music by Philip Feeney. Chan’s Moon Magmatism quintet asks why humanity has always been drawn to the moon, and how science and space travel is unravelling the moon’s mysteries. Leung’s The New Opium duet for electronics, ‘erhu’ Chinese violin and video, examines society’s obsession with mass media communication and addiction to the internet.
ERADICATION OF SCHIZOPHRENIA
IN WESTERN LAPLAND
A dual family drama about recovery from schizophrenia. It simultaneously stages the first psychotic episodes of a mother and son as they navigate stress and change with fantastical results involving Finnish Folk, Margaret Drabble, Adolf Hitler and the knitted cover for a toilet roll. Their interconnected stories are performed to separate but adjoining auditoria in the same theatre space, audible but unseen to each other. This new work from Ridiculusmus is inspired by a treatment method for psychosis that has virtually eradicated schizophrenia from Western Lapland. Post Show Discussion Wednesday 25 February

The Honey Man is an ageing recluse from the Caribbean, trying to save his dying bees in a derelict cottage on the edge of rural England. Into his world bursts a sixteen year old girl called Misty. His stormy encounter with this fiery, weed-smoking heir to the nearby manor house leads to an unlikely friendship, and the discovery of a secret that connects their past, present and destiny in ways they could never have imagined.
But when a Zimbabwean family moves in over the road, the dog won’t stop barking…the local kids start lobbing stones… and her Dad starts laying down the law.

This is an exploration. I want to tell a story – well, my family’s story. Some of it may be true and some may not. There was a song my mom used to sing to me, which her father sang to her. It may have been Irish (that’s where he came from) or even American (that’s where I come from). Or possibly Scottish (weird, because none of us is from Scotland). SELINA THOMPSON PRESENTS
THIS OTHER ISLAND
CHEWING
THE FAT
This Other Island is a re-working of Aime Cesaire’s seminal anti-colonialist version of The Tempest. It weaves the tale of a fantasy land of poetry and dance now ruled by Shakespeare’s Caliban, in which concepts of belonging, diversity and otherness are radically questioned. Featuring Inua Ellams, Malika Booker and Warsan Shire, and with choreography by Sean Graham and Ella Mesma, this is a rare opportunity to see some of the UK’s finest literary talent collaborate with emerging dancers in the latest stage of this workin-progress.
Selina invites you to her own version of a midnight feast: somewhere between the confessions made over coffee at Weight Watchers, and the sloppy drunken storytelling that accompanies that 3am kebab. She infuses discussion of complex, lifelong issues with weight, using laughter, balloons and a healthy dose of rice pudding to result in something truly vibrant. Somewhere between storytelling, stand up, live art and theatre, Chewing the Fat is a powerful and extremely open portrayal of how we live with our bodies, on both the days when they are beautiful, and the days when they are a burden.

Albany Café
Our fully licenced café is a great place to eat, drink, chat, meet friends and sometimes watch performances, offering affordable, locally sourced lunchtime food, snacks, cakes, and hot and cold drinks. Our café is open daily, 9am - 6pm Monday to Friday, 10 - 3pm on Saturdays, and on evenings and Sundays in line with our programme of events.
Dynamic Ticket Pricing
The Albany’s policy is to set ticket prices based on demand, which means we set a price when the event goes on sale and then sometimes put the price up or down depending on how the show is selling. Usually the price will increase as we get closer to the event, so it is advantageous to book early.
