WELCOME TO OUR AUTUMN/WINTER SEASON Hello and welcome to another packed Albany season. We hope you will be delighted with the variety, quality and sheer entertainment value we are able to offer. There is something for everyone to enjoy with a fantastic range of Music, Dance, Drama and Comedy. Do look out for the shows in the Studio as well as the Main House. There’s nothing like the intimacy of the smaller space for some really interesting performances, often presented by new artists launching their careers. These are exciting times for everyone connected to the Albany as the redevelopment work begins. The Albany Theatre is an integral and wellloved part of Coventry’s history and has been intimately connected with the cultural, social and educational life of the city. The redeveloped theatre will build on this, offering a rich and varied artistic programme and a vibrant centre to inspire community ambition and creativity. Our participatory programme is designed to raise aspirations and improve the lives and skills of people of all ages and backgrounds. The Albany as an exciting all-day destination will offer cultural events and learning activities throughout the day and into the evening as well as providing a relaxing environment for friends and professionals to meet in the new café/bar. With each contact with the Albany, on site or out in the community; be it for a show, a workshop, a talk or a class, we aim to delight, surprise and inspire people with an excellent experience in a creative, welcoming and exciting environment. I look forward to welcoming you to a performance or a workshop over the coming months. See you in the stalls. Best wishes Kevin Shaw Chief Executive & Artistic Director

What a pleasure it was to welcome over 400 key workers from across Coventry and Warwickshire to our Gala Performance of “A Christmas Carol”– paramedics, ICU and emergency hospital staff, consultants, mental health workers, GPs and receptionists, police, teachers, community workers and many others who gave and give their all to help us all through the incredibly difficult pandemic. We were also pleased to recognise the support the Albany receives from our Trustees, Coventry City Councillors and Officers, funders, our friends in the media and our staff and volunteers. This great show was a fitting celebration! Critically acclaimed, this was Kevin Shaw’s first production for The Albany, designed and delivered in-house. Kevin has certainly set a very high bar that will see The Albany soaring to new heights in the future. Despite the arrival of the “new variant” we managed to get through to our final performance on Boxing Day, our careful protection measures and assiduous cleaning programme helping to protect all our audiences. As the wave of infections grew stronger, we took the difficult and painful decision to postpone “Dick Whittington”. We received some criticism, but the decision turned out to be wholly justified: so many members of the company became affected that it could not have gone ahead. We have been able to reschedule the show – our very first in-house community panto – for February half term. It will be so much fun making Christmas start all over again! I haven’t mentioned the building works... they are on track, and you can see the plans on the wall in our foyer and on the website. We are moving into our chrysalis state shortly. We will emerge later this year looking amazingly beautiful and ready to fly! David Meredith Chair of The Albany Theatre Trust

REDEVELOPMENT PLANS

EXCITING THINGS ARE COMING… In early 2021, The Albany Theatre Trust was delighted to announce that funding for an ambitious programme of capital works has been secured through Coventry City Council. The Council grant will fund the core works of Phase 1 of a 3 Phase Plan that includes redeveloping the rear of the main house and refurbishing the Art Deco 1930s auditorium. Specifically, Phase 1 will bring improvements to the existing Studio Theatre, 3 new Studios, a new Café and improved audience and community facilities. We hope to begin the rejuvenation of our venue very soon and can’t wait to welcome our audiences into our new spaces, which will ensure the continuation and success of our Arts For Life mission.
