Elkanah of the hill country of Ephraim had two wives. Peninnah had children, but Hannah did not. Elkanah went to worship and sacrifice to Yahweh in Shiloh where Eli was the priest. During his sacrifice, Elkanah gave portions to Peninnah and her children, but he gave double to Hannah because he loved her. (1:1--1:5) 1

Peninnah taunted Hannah, saying, Yahweh had shut her womb. Hannah wept and didn’t eat. Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why don’t you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?” (1:6–1:8)

Hannah rose up in bitterness of soul and prayed to Yahweh and wept bitterly. She vowed, “God, if you will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to you. As proof, no razor shall ever touch his head.” A priest named Eli saw her mouth moving, but Hannah spoke within her heart and her voice was silent. Eli thought she was drunk. (1:9–1:13) 3

Eli said, “You’re drunk. Put away your wine.” Hannah said, “No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit not drink, I poured out my soul before God.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your petition and prayers.” Hannah smiled and in the morning they worshiped and left. God remembered Hannah. (1:14–1:19) 4

Hannah bore a son named Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of God.” Elkanah, and all his house went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice and his vow. But Hannah didn’t go, saying, “Not until the child is weaned; then, he may appear before Yahweh and stay there forever.” Elkanah said to her, “Do what seems good to you. Only, may Yahweh establish his word.” (1:20–1:23) 5

When she had weaned him, Hannah took Samuel up with three bulls, some meal and a bottle of wine and brought him to Yahweh’s house in Shiloh. They killed the bull and brought the child to Eli. She said, “Oh, my lord, I am the woman who you saw praying. For this child I prayed, and Yahweh has answered my prayer. Therefore, as long as he lives, he is granted to Yahweh.” Samuel worshiped Yahweh. (1:24–1:28) 6

Hannah prayed, “My heart exults in Yahweh! For there is no one besides you nor any rock like our God. Those who were hungry are fed. Yahweh kills and makes alive. Yahweh makes poor and rich. Battle with Yahweh and you shall be destroyed. He will thunder against them in the sky. Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (2:1–2:10) 7

Eli’s sons were bad men who did not know Yahweh. The priest’s servant came and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest.” The man said, “Let the fat be burned first, and then, take as much as your soul desires.” The servant said, “No, give it to me now, or I will take it by force.” The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh. (2:12–2:17) 8

Samuel ministered before Yahweh. His mother made him a little robe and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife and said, “Yahweh give you children.” They returned home. Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, Samuel, grew before Yahweh. (2:18–2:21) 9

When Eli was very old, he heard all that his sons did to all Israel. He said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings. You make Yahweh’s people disobey. If one man sins against another, God shall judge him, but if a man sins against Yahweh, who shall speak for him?” But they didn’t listen to the voice of their father because Yahweh intended to kill them.
