2016 Cocktails and Jazz Seated Dinner Live and Silent Auction

Sarah W. Whiteside, Head of School Music by Carlos Pino ‘91, Pedro Mayor, and Aaron Goldberg Lance Walker, Auctioneer Alex Broad, Empire Diamond 3

Dear Altamont Friends— I am delighted that you are able to join us this evening as we celebrate forty years of The Altamont School! In the spring of 1976, the very first class claimed the distinction of graduating from The Altamont School. This combined class of students from Birmingham University School and Brooke Hill School, some of whom are here tonight, set the standards high for those of us who have come after them. Your participation tonight makes it possible for us to continue to offer the very best in teaching and in learning for our students and our faculty. We are gathered together here to celebrate the many successes of our school community and to raise the funds necessary to continuing our program of excellence as we support our mission of preparing students for productive and meaningful lives in the 21st Century. As a result of the generosity of our sponsors, I am very pleased to tell you that every dollar raised here tonight will go towards our goal of $200,000. As we all strive for One More Lap, I am reminded of our extraordinary teachers and coaches who encourage, inspire, and support our students to go the extra mile every day in every endeavor. Just as the ancient Greeks believed in the importance of Mens Sana Corpore Sano throughout one’s life, I am reminded of some of Altamont’s great mentors and recipients of endowed Teaching Chairs—Jeanne Classé, Coach Ralph Patton, Jimmy Wiygul, Chris Thomas, Jim Palmer—who are on the

sidelines, in the classrooms and halls, and in the stands encouraging all of us to embrace the challenge to be and to do our best in every endeavor. An evening such as this does not happen without the efforts and talents of incredible people. We are especially grateful to Stephanie and Wade Lynton, our 2016 Gala hosts. Their generosity, enthusiasm, and creativity have been both amazing and contagious. Under their guidance, many volunteers and Altamont employees have worked tirelessly to make this event a night to remember. On the following pages you will find an impressive list of volunteers who have shared their time, energy, and ideas as we celebrate our School. Please remember that every time you raise your auction paddle, you are helping Altamont students and faculty to go One More Lap. So please raise your paddle often and enjoy the evening. With deep gratitude for your support,

Sarah W. Whiteside Head of School

How the Live Auction Works 1. The Auction will begin around 8:00 pm and will be conducted without interruption until all the items have been auctioned or withdrawn. 2. To enter a bid in the Live Auction, the bidder must raise his or her paddle to attract the attention of the Auctioneer or his designee. This procedure must be repeated for each increase in bid. 3. The Auction will be fast paced, so bids must be made quickly! 4. You may use a bid spotter to attract the auctioneer’s attention. Remember, however, that notifying a bid spotter of your intention to bid does not constitute a bid until the auctioneer sees you and acknowledges your bid. 5. Each bid legally obligates the bidder to pay his bid price in full if his or her bid is deemed the high bid by the Auctioneer. 6.

If the Auctioneer determines that an opening bid or any subsequent bid is not commensurate with the value of the item offered, he may reject the same and withdraw the item from sale; and, if having an opening bid, he decides that an advance thereafter is not of sufficient amount, he may reject the advance. The Auctioneer retains the right to announce conditions of the sale at any time. In the event of any dispute, the auctioneer will have sole and final discretion in these matters. The high bidder will be acknowledged by the Auctioneer.

7. After the Auctioneer says “sold,” title to the item and/or services will pass to the highest bidder who, thereupon, assumes full risk and responsibility thereof.

12

Check-out Procedures 1.

2. As each Auction item is purchased, the auctioneer will call out the paddle number of the winner and the purchase amount. This information will be delivered to the Check-Out area in the reception area. 3. Detailed information on non-tangible items such as vacation homes, trips, and services will be presented to the Buyer once payment has been made. 4.
