Welcome to the 8th Alvin Music Festival Welcome! Alvin Sunrise Rotary is proud to bring you the 8th annual Alvin Music Festival and BBQ Cook-Off on March 22-23 at Briscoe Park. This year’s featured performers have something for everyone from ’80s rock and roll, to country western and just a dash of Margaritaville. As the festival chairs, we are excited to invite you to our event. During the two-day, familyfriendly event, an IBCAsanctioned BBQ cook-off will take place with 150 cook teams competing for their share of $8,500 in cash and prizes. Grab a funnel cake, a cream soda or anything else that sounds delicious from our many food trucks that will be parked on site. Then, bounce around the kid’s area that is filled with inflatables for kids of all ages and mini golf. Make sure you get there in time for our 2nd
annual Corn Hole Tournament on Saturday with many teams competing for the title. All of this in addition to live music filling up the big stage. All proceeds from Alvin Music Festival are returned to the community by Alvin Sunrise Rotary with donations to various nonprofit organizations including the Alvin Food Pantry, Alvin Police Department, Hand-inHand Child Development, Brazoria County Alliance for Children, and many more. Funds are also used to provide scholarships AISD and ACC students. Last year we had over 9,000 attend, so make plans to come out and enjoy the music, the food and fun. See you March 22-23! Bag of Donuts - 8 p.m. Friday Straight from New Orleans, Band of Donuts has been entertaining audiences for more than 30 years. The band celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, yet they keep on trucking with an extravagant and entertaining show. Along with their flair for kabuki makeup and extravagant costumes, the four New Orleans natives cover songs in a style they have branded as Superpop: Any song popular from any era. Their flamboyant performances are a combination of ultimate showmanship, call and response audience participation, visual ingenuity, professional musicianship and pure entertainment with a nod to the comedy gods. With over 100 live dates each year, Bag of Donuts has become headliners at festivals and clubs from Texas to Florida. New Orleans Magazine named them one of the most popular local acts while also receiving “Cover Band Of The Year” honors by Offbeat magazine in 2016. In an effort to continue their evolution and sense of reinvention, the band added a two-piece horn section in the spring of 2017.

Alvin Sunrise Rotary — eight years of giving back In 2011, a group of community service-minded individuals came together to establish a second Rotary Club in Alvin to meet the needs of those wishing to attend an early morning meeting. Since that time the club of 32 members has worked hard to follow the Rotary motto “Service above Self.” Starting a club means also finding ways to raise funds in order to give to others in our community. This group took on this challenge and has exceeded expectations in their first eight years. “We passed the hat a lot, and we worked hard,” said charter member and 2012-13 President Terry Droege. In 2012 Sunrise Rotary held its first cook off in the Stanton’s parking lot for 30 cook teams and two bands. Six years later, in 2018, over 150 cook teams participated in the IBCA sanctioned cook off for prizes over $8,000 with eight bands performing from the main stage and over 9,000 in attendance. Throughout the years, they have welcomed talented musicians to the stage, from David Allan Coe, Easton Corbin, Kevin Fowler,
Roger Creager, The Spazmatics, RaeLynn, Junior Gordon, Kyle Park and Bellamy Brothers to Cole Degges and many more. “Through the success and community support of the Music Festival we have been able to provide so much for our community,” said charter member and current President Johnny Wennerstrom. The funds raised through the Music Festival, Alvin Sunrise Rotary has been able to support the following initiatives: • Scholarships at Alvin, Manvel and Shadow Creek high schools • Scholarships at Alvin Community College for students returning to college • Alvin Animal Shelter • Alvin Community College/ Alvin ISD Food Drive • Alvin Community College Emergency Assistance Program • Alvin Community College Foundation • Alvin Community College Lab School Library • Alvin Family Community In June 2017 Sunrise Rotary completed installation of a new fence at the Alvin ISD Outdoor Learning Center at Hood Case Elementary. Sunrise Rotary was able to do this project because of a Rotary District Center 5890 grant. This fence spans over 800 feet and took members three hot and humid Saturdays to complete. • Alvin ISD Book Bus (Courtesy photo)

In 2017 and 2018, Sunrise partnered with the Thelma Ley Anderson YMCA on Operation Backpack by providing over $5,000 of supplies each year. “Without the support of Sunrise Rotary financially and their man power, we would not have been able to assist as many families,” said Sunrise Rotarian and YMCA
Director Jami Huygens. In 2016, Sunrise rebuilt the fence at the Alvin ISD Learning Nature Center at Hood Case Elementary. “This project took sweat equity and really involved all club members and their families working hard, but once we saw the result it was all worth it,” stated charter member and 2016-17 President Nick Droege. “One of first project was helping the city of Alvin rebuild picnic tables to be used at community events,” said charter member and 2013-14 Sunrise President Robert Vasquez. The club repeated this grant in 2014 and 2015 and refurbished 30 picnic tables. Since 2011, Sunrise Rotary has donated over $350,000 of support to our community. “That is pretty incredible,” stated Terry Droege. One of the hallmarks of the Rotary Club is serving and being involved in the community. Rotarians are active in so many community events such as Alvin ISD Turtle Race, chamber events, Toastmasters, galas for ACC and Alvin ISD, volunteering to read at schools, helping at shelters and rebuilding after Hurricane Harvey. “Our members understand the importance of giving volunteering and following our motto Service Above Self,” said Charter member and 2017-18 President Wendy Del Bello. In 2018 the club reached one of their goals by obtaining the mark of being a 100 percent Paul Harris Club. The Paul Harris Fellowships are awarded to those that have personally donated $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation. “To have our club reach that goal showed our commitment to Rotary International and the ideals to which Rotary stands for,” said charter member and 2014-15 Sunrise President Michael Hoover. Sunrise Rotary meets every Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. at Kelly’s Country Kitchen. Sunrise Rotary welcomes new members that are interested in having fun, but working hard within our local communities to make a difference. For more information email alvinsunrise11@gmail.com or contact Membership Chair and President-Elect Lindsey Vaughn at 281-610-8353.

Members of Alvin Sunrise Rotary presented a $3,000 donation to the City of Alvin to assist in the funding for “Nick” the newest member of the K-9 unit with Alvin Police Department. Right, ASR Club donated $5,000 to Disaster Aid for them to be able to buy a Sky-Hydrant. Through water filtration systems such as the Sky-Hydrant, Disaster Aid is able to send the system to international communities and work with Rotarians and locals to install the system, and teach the local community how to use the filtration system properly. Gary P. Nunn - 8 p.m. Saturday
A legend in Texas Country music, Nunn has been taking Texas country music to the world for more than 40 years. Nunn was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame in 2004 and is considered an icon of Lone Star music. A founding father of the progressive country movement out of Austin in the 1970s that changed the face of popular music, Nunn is also an independent music pioneer who continues to oversee his own record label and song publishing companies, manage his own career (with the help of his wife Ruth), and play most every weekend at top music venues throughout Texas and beyond. His composition “London Homesick Blues” — with its internationally known “I wanna go home with the Armadillo” chorus — is a signature Texas country song that was the theme for the PBS concert TV show “Austin City Limits” for nearly three decades.
