McNair Junior High open, ready for students By David Rupkalvis Publisher When students return to class next week, one lucky group will walk through the doors of a new Alvin ISD school for the first time. After about two years of construction, the Dr. Ronald McNair Junior High will open to more than 975 eager students. The school is so new, the administration staff has been inside for less than a month, and teachers were not allowed in until last week. When students arrive, Principal Craig Rhodes will be eager to meet them. Last year, Rhodes was principal at Jeter Elementary and served as assistant principal at Harby Junior High and Alvin High School. But when he was named the principal of McNair, he left Jeter and has not worked with students for almost six months.
The classrooms at McNair Junior High are crisp, clean and ready for students. Two weeks before school was scheduled to start, teachers were just getting into the classrooms for the first time. (Photo by David Rupkalvis)

During that time, he has worked with contractors to set up the school exactly like he wants. “We had a lot of input on furniture,” he said. “The name of the game is flexibility with our kiddos and giving them what they need to be successful.” McNair is designed like most of the newer junior highs in the district, but Rhodes did have some input. He has the sixth-grade classes downstairs, with seventh and eighth graders upstairs. He was also adamant about turning a lot of the open space into flexible learning areas. Even the library can hold two full classes at a time, if needed. The school is named after McNair, who was a NASA astronaut and the second African American to fly in space. McNair flew on the Space Shuttle Challenger for eight days in 1984 and was back on the Challenger in 1986 when it exploded on liftoff, killing the entire crew. Rhodes said the new school, which will have a nickname of the Eagles, is taking its ties to McNair
McNair Junior High will be known as the Eagles, in part to honor their namesake, Dr. Ronald E. McNair.

seriously. “We’re partnering with NASA, doing some field trips over there and getting some of their scientists and engineers over here,” he said. “We’re having an emphasis on STEM, especially with the girls.”
Rhodes said McNair was a trailblazer in his own right, working as a physicist and obviously one of the first black astronauts. To keep with the space flight theme, the hallways will be named

after constellations, and the office is mission control. During Eagle Camp last week, Rhodes said the students were excited. “The kids seemed to like it,” he said. “Instead of saying go to the
office, we say go to mission control.” McNair Junior High will have 100 employees, including 22 teachers brand new to Alvin ISD. Two weeks before classes were set to begin, construction workers still roamed the halls, making final improvements. Teachers were beginning to decorate classrooms and supplies were still being brought in. But Rhodes said on Aug. 16, McNair Junior High will be ready.
“The school will be ready for day one, for sure,” he said. “We’re going to have a couple of busy weeks. We’re ready. I’ve been ready.” McNair Junior High is located in Pearland near Shadow Creek High School. Assistant Superintendent Daniel Combs said the school will likely be the last built in Pearland for a while, but new junior highs will be needed in Manvel and Iowa Colony areas before long.

McNair Junior High was constructed like many of the new junior highs in the district, but Principal Craig Rhodes and his staff had direct say in the furniture as it was filled. The library, above, was designed to hold up to two full classrooms for instructional work while the open spaces were designed for comfort and student learning in mind. (Photos by David Rupkalvis)

State’s sales tax holiday for back-to-school shopping this weekend Whether you’re in need of book bags, blackboard chalk or bellbottom pants, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding shoppers they can save money on those and certain other items during the state’s sales tax holiday. This year, the sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-12. The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced below $100 from sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend. “As Texas families begin the process of replacing their beach bags with book bags, Texas’ sales tax holiday is the perfect opportunity to save some money on the supplies families need before the school bell rings,” Hegar said. “As a dad to three young children, I know how these expenses can add up.” This year, shoppers will save an estimated $90.3 million in state and local sales taxes during the sales tax holiday. Texas’ tax holiday weekend has been an annual event since 1999.
