Manvel grad has a busy summer planned Preparing for college, competing in the Junior Olympics in volleyball and receiving her Gold Award for Girl Scouts are just a few of the things Manvel High School senior Jamie Travis has planned for the summer. “I’m busy,” Travis stated. “I don’t get days off. I don’t take breaks. I have goals, and I will continue to work hard until I achieve those goals.” One of those goals is to become a trauma surgeon. She is starting

that journey by enrolling at Texas Tech University in the fall. When asked about what motivated her to want to become a trauma surgeon, Travis explained, “I volunteered at Memorial Hermann Hospital and worked in the trauma center. I loved helping people who were suffering during the worst times of their lives.” That passion for medicine led her to sign up to take EMT courses at Alvin ISD’s JB Hensler College and Career Academy. “Since I knew I wanted to go to medical school, I thought that taking the EMT classes offered through the college and career academy would help me gain real world experience,” Travis stated. “The course has taught me how to use the equipment, how to load and carry a patient on a stretcher, and other things that will be useful in real life.” Between dual credit and AP exams, Jamie will have already completed her first two years of college before she even steps foot on the Texas Tech campus. “When I get to Tech, I plan on taking the MCAT exam and hope to apply to the Texas Tech

Manvel High School graduate Jamie Travis has a busy summer planned. She will be competing in the Junior Olympics, preparing for college and receiving a Gold Award from the Girl Scouts. University School of Medicine,” Travis said. Medicine isn’t the only thing that Jamie is passionate about. This summer, she will be travelling to California with her club volleyball team and competing in the Junior Olympics. “I have been playing volleyball since I was 10 years old. I think that sports have helped me with important skills like time management,” Travis said. Travis plans on continuing to play club volleyball when she gets to college. As if she wasn’t busy enough, Jamie is also pursuing the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. “We had to complete two projects in order to qualify for the Gold Award,” Travis explained. “For my projects, I incorporated my love of medicine to schedule two events.” For her first event, Jamie set up a tour and question and answer session at the University of Texas Medical School. “I brought over 40 students from Manvel High School,
Shadow Creek High School and Hightower High School to UT Medical School where we toured the building and talked about how to get into medical school,” Travis explained. Her second event was bringing nine medical professionals to Manvel High School to speak to parents and students about how to get into the medical field. “We had about 30 people show up to that event. Some of the leading medical professionals in their field came to speak, and I think that the audience came away with some invaluable information,” Travis said. When asked what motivates her to keep working hard to achieve her goals, Travis said, “My mom really instilled hard work into my head. Every day I write in a notebook. I write what I have to do to be successful and the steps I have to take to get where I want to go.” There is no doubt that Jamie Travis will be able to achieve whatever she sets her mind to.

event held at this beautiful new facility,” said Amy Roudbari, president of the Alvin ISD Education Foundation board of directors. The celebration recognizes the academic accomplishments of the top 20 seniors at Alvin High School, Manvel High School, the top two seniors at ASSETS Academy and this year, the first top 20 graduates of Shadow Creek High School. The students shared what a difference the educators had made in their lives with their support and encouragement. Manvel High School valedictorian Anna Chemplayil chose Nydia Herzog as her most influential teacher and said, “My love for science was realized in her class and she has gone out of her way to help guide me through high school and college endeavors.” “The Celebration of Academic
Excellence is always a great opportunity for the education foundation to recognize the outstanding students and educators in Alvin ISD,” said Sheila Olson, executive director of the Alvin ISD Education Foundation. “This is one of our most favorite events,” said Roudbari. “It is so heartwarming to hear what all the students have to say about the educators and being in the Liberty Alumni Hall made the evening extra special.” The students honored from Alvin High School were valedictorian Christopher Hogan, salutatorian Ryan Shaw, Madison Hamby, Katherine Custer, John Garcia, Tayler Bingham, Brooke Trahan, Justin Barlow, Kaytlynn Welsch, Alexandra George, Korey Smith, Andrenic Tevanian, Colton Joseph, Lindsey Flake, Haley Threadgill, Ross Gilcrease, Mackenzie Savage, Rachel Hertenberger, Ally DeWeese and Patrick Chhuoey. Brown to pursue ballet dream this summer You won’t find Shadow Creek High School senior Audrey Brown lounging by the pool or going to the beach this summer. That’s because she will be spending her time following graduation putting in long hours and working hard toward her ultimate goal. Upon graduation in the first senior class of SCHS, Audrey already has a busy summer planned. “I have been attending auditions for various ballet companies in the area.” Audrey explained, “Two companies have invited me back for an ‘intensive’ session to hopefully be offered a position in the company.” The two companies that invited

During these weeks, Audrey will work tirelessly to compete for a spot in their show or with the company staff.
Audrey has also been accepted into the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Worldwide to pursue a degree in engineering all while continuing her passion for ballet. She chose Embry-Riddle because of their many options for online degrees. “My goal is to be hired by a ballet company which has the same schedule of a full-time job,” Audrey stated, “I chose the online path to continue my education while pursuing my passion of ballet.” She knows there are busy days
ahead, but she is excited for what her future holds. Audrey plans to continue ballet until she physically cannot dance anymore. Once she retires from ballet, she will be able to use her engineering degree to start her second career.
