The Alvin Sunrise Rotary Club was proud to present $22,000 in scholarships this year. We would like to thank the Alvin community for your support of the Alvin Music Festival and BBQ Cook-off which allows our Club to provide those scholarships along with donations to many local organizations. ACC commencement ceremonies delayed due to rain Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2019 at Alvin Community College were delayed a week after a series of heavy thunderstorms pounded Alvin. The two graduations were originally scheduled May 11, but were postponed due to the dangerous travel conditions. ACC Foundation awards more than $50,000 in scholarships The Alvin Community College Foundation awarded more than $58,750 in scholarships to students at area high schools this year. Fifty scholarships were awarded to students at Alvin High School, Manvel High School, Assets Academy and

Shadow Creek High School. Every year, the ACC Foundation hosts events such as the gala to help raise donations for the Foundation Opportunity scholarships. Twenty Opportunity scholarships were awarded this year for $1,500 each.

ACC recognizes outstanding students on Awards Day Alvin Community College recognized several outstanding students for academic excellence during the Awards Day ceremony April 29. Among the winners was Denise Aviles, of Angleton, who received

the President’s Award. While attending ACC, Aviles was instrumental in the development of the college food bank and working in the Office of Retention while also being named to the dean’s list.

Many other students were honored and given scholarships during the ceremony.

Alvin High School students receive scholarships

Dozens of seniors of the Alvin High School Class of 2019 were honored Monday in a ceremony presenting them with various scholarships. Lead Counselor for Alvin ISD Carlene Leal said over $460,000 in scholarships were awarded. The largest were the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship for $180,000, awarded to Daniel R. Taylor, and the prestigious $128,000 40 Acres Scholarship to the University of Texas-Austin, presented to valedictorian Tobechukwu Phillips by fellow Alvin High School alumnus and UT-Austin Student Body President Colton Becker. ACC Foundation awards grants and honors staff The Alvin Community College Foundation presented $40,807 in grants and awards at the annual Afternoon of Honor on April 30. The Innovative Initiative Grants are designed to encourage, facilitate, recognize and reward innovative and creative approaches to fulfill the mission of Alvin

health outreach program, assist students with hardships, create a digital archive, purchase technology and more. The Foundation awarded a $2,000 grant to help create a mental outreach program for students. Two thousand dollars was

More than $20,000 in funds was also awarded to Adopt-A-Grant programs to benefit student scholarships, the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival, the Upward Bound program, the music program and more. The ACC Foundation also presented faculty and staff members with the Foundation Excellence Awards which recognize college faculty and staff members. Winners this year are Institutional Support specialist Lori King and Institutional Effectiveness and Research associate Tammy Braswell. Each received $1,000. the Upward Bound program to fund cultural events, the Upward Bound program to fund the purchase of benches for the jogging trail, the lab school for Snow Day, the ACC and Alvin ISD Food Drive and the 35th Summer Children’s Theatre Festival. A wine pull conducted at the 2018 Foundation Gala helped fund an Adopt-A-Grant to help students affected by Hurricane Harvey with textbooks and supplies. Many students and staff members continue to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The Foundation awarded $48,949 to the ACC Student and Staff Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The ACC Foundation’s work this past year has provided more than $123,907 to scholarship programs and staff development which will benefit the college now and in the future,. The Foundation is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization. Its mission is to provide opportunities for students, faculty and the college.

Volunteers make a big difference at Alvin ISD Volunteers and community partners enhance the education of our children. Alvin ISD has the support of many parent volunteers as well as local community members and organizations that positively impact student achievement and enrich school experiences. These partnerships bring a wealth of resources and assets to the classrooms.
