Message From The Chairman. . .
Cindy Bremer 2016 Chairman of the Board
It has been a true honor to serve as your 2016 Chairman of the Board of Directors for the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce. The dedication displayed by our numerous volunteers is paramount and is the sole reason for the success of the Chamber and its activities. Although the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce is diverse, it is through unity that the organization leads the promotion of business, economic development, and support of the La Porte-Bayshore community.
That mission is accomplished by: • Increasing membership involvement; • Enhancing communications with the membership; • Promoting the Community; • Maintaining a Coordinated Economic
Development Strategy; • Marketing and promoting the Chamber and its members; • Communicating the value of local businesses to the community; • Communicating with local Governments.

he City of Morgan’s Point has big plans for 50 acres of land the city purchased recently. he project has been named “he Colonel James Morgan New Washington Prairie.” If you know your Morgan’s Point history, you know that Col. James Morgan started it all, and New Washington was the original name of the area that was to eventually become Morgan’s Point. And it was a bayside prairie. he purpose of the Plan is to propose an open space nature preserve located on the 50 acres, which will serve as: * A natural bufer between the residential portions of Morgan’s Point and the Barbour’s Cut shipping terminal facilities to the north. * A re-created coastal prairie preserve that features grass, forb, shrub and tree species that are native to the region and typical of coastal prairies. * A means to tell the story of the founding of Morgan’s Point and key points in the city’s history. * Recreational amenities that allows for small numbers of visitors to access the site through limited of-street parking, and passive activities such as walking trails, rest areas, and birdwatching facilities. While there are many exciting aspects of this Plan, one that will be of signiicance to not just Morgan’s Point residents but also visitors to the city is the Coastal Prairie Restoration. his will include a reintroduction of native plants to a portion of the area, with numerous grasses, plants trees and lowers as part of the project. Also, birdwatchers will like the Coastal Prairie plan as even more

migratory birds will be on the scene, drawn by the restored prairie. here are many possibilities for the future development of this site. For instance, perhaps an elevated prairie viewing area could be included, or a Visitor Center, or a community park with playground and picnic grove, or the construction and operation of an 1830s period farm, or an extensive trail system. he possibilities are many, and the city looks forward to working with citizens and others to help formulate plans.

he City of Shoreacres has seen new homes going up throughout the community of late, including some large Bayfront homes on Miramar Drive. he city has also seen a number of infrastructure upgrades recently, to streets and other city systems. And a recently completed new police station stands just across Shoreacres Boulevard from City Hall. Shoreacres is well known as a sanctuary from the hustle and bustle or today’s lifestyle, and two “retreats” in particular can be found in the fact that the city is proud of its standing as a bird sanctuary, and proud as well of the fact that it is home to the Houston Yacht Club – the oldest yacht club in Texas. Known as “he Pink Palace,” the Yacht Club is an historic landmark along Galveston Bay. It has 27,000 square feet of clubhouse space, and its harbor has more than 250 slips for boats of all shapes and sizes, plus a 400-foot guest dock. he Shoreacres Civic Association helps maintain the lora and landscaping of the wooded environment of the city, and organizes a number of fun events such as an Easter Egg Hunt and Halloween festivities, all accomplished through a variety of fundraisers. Also, the Shoreacres Recreation Association oversees the management of the lighted ishing pier on Miramar in Galveston Bay, just to the north of the Houston Yacht Club. here is also a boat ramp at the pier, and all add to the leisure conveniences of residents of the city.
HoustonYacht Club Brings Focus Of Sailing World To Galveston Bay he Houston Yacht Club, the oldest and one of the grandest yacht clubs in Texas, recently hosted a nine day event featuring sailing races as part of the United States Optimist Dinghy Association – USODA. And despite some challenges with weather, the races were completed and the extravaganza was carried out with the usual HYC combination of hospitality and professionalism. here were actually numerous events under the umbrella of the 2016 USODA National Championship. Included was a Team Race National Championship; a Girls National Championship; A National Team Sendof; and a National Championship and Green Fleet Racing event. hat National Team Sendof, by the way, allowed those present to celebrate with the sailors who will be representing the USA at the Olympic Games in Rio in August. So you could rightfully say that the Houston Yacht Club brought the focus of the sailing world to Shoreacres and Galveston Bay.

Muldoon, president; C.J. Higginbotham; E.C. Downer; E.P. Seureau; and Geo. Van Pelt, secretary. At the meeting, the members also authorized the purchase of wood for a school at the cost of $9, water for a school at the cost of $10, and tile and drainage at the cost of $8.25. In addition, $10 was set aside to “buy books for those unable to buy for themselves, which books shall be held as the property of the school district.” Although the La Porte Independent School District was formed at that time, records show that schools in La Porte date back to 1893, when the children of settlers attended school in a vacant store

100th Anniversary Block Party Oct. 1 building donated by A.B. Prince at the corner of Main and Fourth Streets. As the town grew, a two-story, four-room school was built on the corner of Second and G Streets in 1896 and served the community through the school year of 1916. In 1909, a school was organized for the black students of La Porte, with school held temporarily in the Baptist Church on the north side of the community. he school then moved to a one-room school building that was later sold to La Porte ISD. During its irst year, 10 students attended classes there and were taught by Viola DeWalt, for whom the current La Porte ISD campus located at 401 North 2nd Street is named. Mrs. DeWalt taught at the school for over 30 years. In 1943, a two-room school building that had been used in Morgan’s Point and then near La Porte Elementary was moved next to the one-room building, and an additional teacher was added. DeWalt Elementary was built in 1953, and students in grades one through eight went to school there, while older students went to George Washington Carver High School in Baytown until La Porte schools were integrated in 1963. Ater the formation of La Porte ISD, in 1916 construction began on a three-story building on Broadway. Schools that were in Morgan’s Point and Lomax were closed, and these students went to the La Porte ISD school as well. his was the only school in La Porte until 1940, when La Porte Elementary was opened just south of the old building, and the three-story building served junior high and high school students. he top two loors of the three-story building were
destroyed by a hurricane in 1943, and the irst loor of the building continued to be used until 1963, serving as part of the new high school and junior high school which opened in the same location in 1944. In 1953, the intermediate elementary building was added just south of the elementary building, which then served primary students. Continued growth created the need for a new high school, and in 1959, the present La Porte High School opened. La Porte Junior High School then occupied the older building. Over the years, additional schools were added, and today, La Porte ISD serves over 7,700 students at 12 campuses. he district includes seven elementary schools, a sixth grade campus, two junior high schools for seventh and eighth grade students, DeWalt High School and La Porte High School.
he Next 100 Years hanks to community support of the $260 million bond issue in 2014, La Porte ISD is working toward serving the needs of students for the next hundred years. “We are building for children we have yet to see, in a world that is limited by our own experience and not by what their educational needs may be,” said Lloyd W. Graham, La Porte ISD superintendent

Many of these individuals continue to serve on the Citizens Bond Construction Advisory Committee as projects are completed in the district. Several of these projects were inished for the start of the 201617 school year. La Porte High School is undergoing a major rebuild at the current campus, with projects totaling 530,000 square feet. A ribboncutting was held at the new sotball ield during the spring of 2016, and the new ine arts facility and career and technical education center opened in August. Areas of the old high school have been demolished as construction begins on a science classroom building and multi-purpose center. A new natatorium is also going up, and renovations to the Student Center and other areas are in progress. Major renovations have also been completed at La Porte Junior High School, Lomax Junior High School, College Park Elementary School and La Porte Elementary School. At La Porte Junior High School, oice area renovations and the addition of a new gymnasium were completed in April 2016, with the old gymnasium demolished later in the spring. At Lomax Junior High School, the administrative area was renovated to include a security vestibule, and classroom areas were also renovated. College Park Elementary School’s renovations included relocation of the administrative areas and front entrance of the school to Purdue Street. Classrooms and hallways were also renovated, a new
gymnasium was constructed, and a covered playground area was added. Most of this work was completed by April 2016. La Porte Elementary’s renovations included classroom and hallway renovations and the addition of a covered playground area, which were completed prior to the start of the 2015-16 school year. During the summer of 2016, covered playground areas were added at Leo A. Rizzuto, Jennie Reid, Heritage and Bayshore elementary schools. Renovations were made to science classrooms at Jennie Reid as well, and a walking track was added at Bayshore. Miller Named Volunteer Of The Year A heart and passion for a community doesn’t always come through living there. Though Katie was not born or raised in La Porte, she has come to love this community which grew through working here and being involved in various activities. Katie just completed her threeyear term as the Vice President of Fundraising for the Chamber and has been a co-chairman of several committees including Casino Night, Hamburger cookout and Steak cookout. She has also served on the Salute to Industry committee, participated in Christmas on Main Street, and La Porte High School’s Career Fair during her term on the board of directors. Katie’s true passion came with working with high school aged girls through the Miss Sylvan Beach pageant. She has done everything from gathering convertibles for the parade, helping backstage, being an assistant director to helping in the transition of the director’s position to the next generation this past year. Her time on the Board of Directors has been a rewarding experience, which she is most grateful for. It has helped shape her for future endeavors, afforded her the opportunity to meet many great people, and shown her the spirit that is the La Porte-Bayshore area. he Chamber - A Personal Invitation. . . Recently one of our new members stated that he had wanted to become a member of the Chamber for a while, but he thought he had to be asked. his statement was a surprise – staf and volunteers “assumed” that “everyone” knew that Chamber membership is open to all. It suddenly became obvious that the Chamber staf and the volunteers needed to devote more time to communication.
he Chamber is a corporation, which has a board of directors, fulltime professional staf, articles of incorporation and bylaws. It is devoted to marketing, promotion, and business development in the La Porte-Bayshore area. However, the Chamber is really people – people who join together to solve problems or advance programs, which make this area a better place to live, to work and to do business. It provides opportunities for members such as networking, referrals, publicity and exposure, education and training, information, and much more. Membership in the Chamber is open to all businesses as well as to individuals who are not associated with a business. Although Chamber staf and volunteers try to make contact with the businesses in the area to invite them to join, we know not every business will be contacted. So, if you haven’t been contacted and would like to become involved with other business owners and people who have an interest in improving the La Porte-Bayshore area, remember, you don’t need to be asked. However, if it would make you feel more comfortable to be invited, please consider 2016 Miss Sylvan Beach Winners this your personal invitation.
