A SHOOTING HAVEN DEEP IN THE UNTOUCHED FOREST Text and Images courtesy of Kirana Spa

Kirana Spa, A Shooting Haven, Was Born from Magnificent Nature and the Keen Sensitivity of Human Kind The Kirana Spa was conceived as the ultimate spa resort for the pursuit of supreme relaxation. The origin of the word “Kirana” is “light” and “aura” in Sanskrit, implying beauty beyond the merely physical.

22

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

T

he Kirana Spa encompasses 18000 square meters of panoramic views of the rich, green mountains across the magnificent Ayung river valley. Beyond the spa, the forest stretches as far as you can see, and with the gentle rippling sound of water seemingly coming from everywhere, you will relax and replace all your tensions with tranquility, peace and joy. With ideal environment, high quality treatment and scrupulous hospitality, Kirana Spa provides profound relaxation to guests from all over the world. The Spa developed in Ubud pursues sophisticated comfort, perfectly blending with the untouched natural surroundings. Enjoy our private villas where you can receive treatment in an exclusive relaxing environment, or the Spa Garden with abundant water and lush tropical foliage, where you can indulge yourself in the relaxing aftereffects of the treatment. Shiseido has taken a new look at ancient techniques, which has been unfailingly successful in realizing extreme comfort.

The therapies offered at Kirana Spa are based on Japanese Shiseido knowledge that has been developed for over a century. These techniques utilize the healing power of the human hand, using the art of Shoku (touch) and Atsu (pressure) to relieve stress, tension and stiffness. Through skillful combination of these two techniques, and using the natural rhythms of your own respiration, a more complete and deeper relaxation can be achieved. The Tokumyaku and Ninmyaku points lie in the central area of your body, and are considered to govern the flow of chi energy. All Kirana spa treatments focus on these points in applying the Shiseido principles. Furthermore, the staff at the Kirana Spa will welcome you with their warm smiles and hospitality to help you spend a peaceful, relaxing time at the resort.

Award-Winning Orchids now Grown in Bali By Putu Sudiarta, Photos by Alit Susanta Wirya

The beauty of the island of Bali, with its unique traditional culture and stunning tropical landscapes, continues to draw millions of travelers each year to its sandy shores.

O

ver the decades, however, mass tourism has paid little attention to the potential and development of natural resources. Happily, things are starting to change for the better. These days, some forward-thinking people are looking more and more towards local farmers, and their natural talent for agriculture and horticulture. This focus is opening up a stunning natural world to travelers whilst simultaneously conserving the environment. The undeniable beauty of decorative plants, in particular orchids, has immense potential which, until now, had been relatively unexplored.

32

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

In the past, orchids were always imported to Bali from other islands in Indonesia. However, if you actually hunt around in Bali’s forests, you will find hundreds of species of wild orchids hidden from view. Before we look at the species of orchids found in Bali in more detail, let’s look at what general species are dispersed across the island. The more common varieties include: Acriopsis, Aerides, Arundina, Bulbophyllum, Calanthe, Cleisostoma, Coelogyne, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Dendrochilu, Eria, Flickingeria, Gastrochilus, Goodyera, Liparis, Oberonia, Paphiopedilum, Phaius, Phalaenopsis, Pholidota, Rhynchostylis, Schoenorchis, Spathoglottis, Thelasis, Thrixspermum,

Trichotosia, Vanda, Ventriculari, and more. A well-known species is called Vanda Tricolor, which has become the mascot for Balinese orchids, because most houses in the Pancasari and Bedugul regions are covered with them. Several rare species include varieties of Paphiopedilum (pocket orchid) called Paphiopedilum javanicum and Paphiopedilum lowii, and from the genus Dendrobium comes Dendrobium macrophyllum which is spread throughout North Bali. There is only one organization that is active in the development and conservation of decorative plants, especially orchids: The Decorative Plant Collective of Wanasari in Pancasari Village in Sukasada, Buleleng. Since 2006, they have been gathering together farmers to learn about and grow orchids and other decorative plants. Proud recipients of an award from the President of Indonesia, they not only gather together numerous orchid species but also research into the development of hybrids. The hybrids, which hail from Java as well as Japan and Australia, include Cymbidium, Zygopetalum, Cattleya, Oncidium, Epidendrum, Colmanara, Phragmipedium and others. One of the most outstanding varieties, however, is Cymbidium. The local tropical climate, which is perfect for growing orchids, has meant that Cymbidium has flourished here. Its unique and wonderful colors never fail to impress. In several local orchid shows, Balinese orchids often win awards for ‘Best Hybrid’ and ‘Best of the Best’, both at national and international level. Finally, the island of Bali, with its ideal climate, has not only become a center of orchid production but also established itself as one of the best orchid growing regions in the archipelago.

BALI ARTS

FESTIVAL by Travel & Business Information Service on the Island of Bali www.bali-paradise.com

The Bali Arts Festival is a full month of daily performances, handicraft exhibitions and other related cultural and commercial activities during which literally the whole of Bali comes to the city to present its offerings of dance, music and beauty. On display are trances from remote mountain slopes, forgotten or recently revived village dances, food and offering contests, classical palace dances, stars of Balinese stage, odd musical performances, “kreasi baru (new creations) from the dance schools of Denpasar, as well as contemporary choreography and dance companies from other islands and from abroad.

It

is a month long revelry that perhaps no other place in the world can put up on such a low budget as the Balinese. Not only is their traditional culture alive and well, but they have a tremendous pride in it. It begins in the villages, where the seka or cultural groups are selected and organized at the regency level, vie with each other to perform the Arts Festival and thus display in front of a large audience the uniqueness of their village of birth and resting place of their ancestors. The Bali Arts Festival is the Denpasar cultural event of the year, perhaps it would no be too far fetched to suggest that it is the cultural event of Indonesia. The festival is thus a unique opportunity to see local village culture both “live and at first hand. Tourists are warmly welcomed.

THE HISTORY OF THE BALI ARTS FESTIVAL

W

hen tourism took off after 1965, the Balinese insisted that it followed cultural guidelines: if tourism was to be accepted, it was to be a cultural tourism, or “pariwisata budaya”. As the Balinese put it: “Tourism should be for Bali instead of Bali for tourism.” In time, this idea become national policy, as part of a larger revping of regional cultures for national purposes. The policy owes much to the former Director General of Culture (1968-1978) and Governor of Bali (1978-1988), Ida Bagus Mantra, an Indian-educed Balinese. It led, on the one side, to the creation of enclave resorts such as Nusa Dua to limit the direct impact of tourism, and on the other, to a long haul cultural policy aimed at nurturing and preserving the traditional agrarian culture while adapting it to the demands of modernity, and in particular of “cultural tourism”. At the village level, local music groups, dances and other cultural events were

38

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

inventoried, then supported by a series of contests at the district and regency level. The ensuing competition energized the cultural life of villages, whose “young blood” was already being drained to the city by the process of economic change and urbanization. Schools of dance and art were created, in particular the Kokar conservatory and the STSI School of Dance and Music. Beside research, these schools replaced the traditional master/ disciple relationship by modern methods of teaching; standardized the dance movements, produced new types of Balinese dances for tourism and modern village entertainment. Most important, it enabled former students to return to the villages as teachers, where they diffused, beside the creed of cultural resilience and renewal, new dances and standardized versions of old ones. Many of the performances are held at the amphitheater which can hold up to 6,000 spectators, in a temple-like stage.

International Vegetarian Restaurant Since 1990

Presenting A Unique Menu Of Global Cuisine, Knockout Desserts And Patisseries. Promoting conscious & healthy eating with a commitment to serving fresh and natural food, Cool garden setting, tranquil ambiance and great service. Each year, the Bali Arts Festival, beside the fed classical dances of the island, such as the legong, gambuh, kecak, barong, baris, mask dances and the like, is based on the theme around which new “dance choreography” is produced and old village dances and activities revived. Over the years, the whole range of classical Balinese stories - Ramayana, Mahabharata, Sutasoma, Panji - have thus been turned into “colossal” Sendratari Ballets. The main challenge to the Arts Festival is obviously economic in nature. As village life is increasingly feeling the strains of monetary considerations, dancers, musicians and others cannot be expected to continue participating simply for the sake and the pleasure of it. As costs soar, new sources of financing have to be found. The obvious answer is the private sector and in particular the tourism industry. The greater task then is to convince the hotels, travel agencies and tourist guides to be more participatory in the Arts Festival rather than to their own sponsored events. Considering the pride the Balinese have in their culture, and the adaptability and dynism they have always demonstrated, this little hurdle can be overcome. Trust the Balinese. They will eventually succeed to transform their tradition into a modern, Balinese culture of their own.

GLOBAL SPHERE: IKA’S LATEST FASHION ON HONG KONG FASHION WEEK By HKFW 2010, Images courtesy of Ika Mardiana Collection

44

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

World leaders and concerned citizens continue to focus on the issues of climate change and global warming as discussed and debated in the Copenhagen Summit. This captured IKA’s imagination for her collection and provided fuel for her creativity. She drew her design inspiration from the beauty of planet earth, its people and the galaxy beyond.

45

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

T

he past year has been turbulent for world weather patterns. It is time for us to reach out and embrace our changing planet, doing our part to save it from continuing destruction. The cold regions are warming, melting the glaciers at a rapid pace while the hot belts are facing intensified heat. Considering this, IKA dug deep within herself and drew out three elements for her theme of GLOBAL SPHERE: Modern Nomad, Nordic Winter and Geo Swirl.

Modern Nomad The world grows smaller as our traveling increases. Today’s internationalism requires citizens of the global village to crisscross the world to stay connected with each other, very much like the nomadic travelers of the past, but in a modern setting. We are the Modern Nomads.

46

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

Inspired by the Nordic winter and the sun drenched tropics, IKA tells the story of our modern nomadic life by combining geometrics mixed with stripes along with floral and animal skin fabrics in earthly winter tones of sky blues and tundra greens, sprinkled with magenta reds and sometimes patches of contrasting black and white. Warm soft wool wrap-coats are sometimes double-sided in long, medium and short lengths, conjuring a winter Lapland scene yet fitting perfectly into the modern urban scene.

Nordic Winter Snowy peaks of the mountains and icy glacial masses are being diminished by the warming planet. IKA is taking inspiration from the low sun angle of Nordic winter land. This paints the landscape a glistening silken sheen, azure blue kissed with pink, different shades of glacial blue with burnt sienna, lilac purple and Midas gold. These are artistically combined and intertwined with shimmering metallic grays and chintz browns. IKA continues to experiment with geometric, angular symmetry colliding with linear patterns from the past, elevating them to new artist heights. Metal elements glide and dot the creative pieces, clashing cultural jagged metal on smooth metallic surfaces like playing metal music.

Geo Swirl Planet earth spins & swirls through the galaxy. Ika not only displays curvilinear but also linear lines, squares, triangles, trapezoids, rhombus and diamond shapes and forms found in the geological formations evolved through millions of years or in newly formed snow flakes, ice crystals and hexagonal volcanic rock columns. Fabrics of glittering stars on an incandescent sky with bursts of an occasional volcanic red send the ladies rocketing into figure hugging outfits or loose gear for the easy riders and urban cowgirls in virtual reality. The juxtaposition of soft curves and hard lines give birth to new visual forms of harmony in IKA’s fashion vocabulary, toward the enhancement and accentuation of the woman’s figure while sometimes discreetly hiding the unwanted lumps, bumps and bulges. Nearly 2,000 exhibitors from 30 countries and regions will be on hand later this month for Asia’s largest fashion events, the HKTDC Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter and the HKTDC World Boutique, Hong Kong. The concurrent events, 18-21 January, will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the fairs have a worldwide reputation for showcasing the newest collections, looks and products in the industry.

Amazing Sumatera

TOBA

Amazing Lake with Earth Rocking Super Volcanic History By Supardi Asmorobangun, Photos by Warner Duderstaadt

Recent Icelandic Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption has caused flight havoc from and to Europe for almost one week. No airline nor airport was in operation. Fear that volcanic debris or treacherous gases might cause airplane to suffer engine or

48

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

mechanical failure had forced airline companies to ground their aircrafts. The total cost by air travel companies was reportedly way above 1.7 billion dollars, not to mention the direct and indirect business lost caused by chaos.

S

eventy four thousand years ago, though, a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Sumatra had caused every flying thing, animate or inanimate (if ever been developed), virtually stop to fly. The atmosphere was so thick with ash, volcanic debris and other dangerous gases the world over for at least six years that even the sun “stop to shine”. A phase of dramatic global cooling known as 6-year worldwide winter followed by the onset of the Würm glaciation event. No summer, no fall, no spring. All was winter. Temperature dropped to a perimeter that only the fittest animals and plant survived. Human population was reduced to as low as 10,000 to

15,000 individuals. They, our ancestors, were not only the fittest out of million, but also the smartest to be able to survive the incalculable disaster, to persist through a dramatic event. The human-like ape—the semi-modern primates that developed into modern human— and many more species vanished. The answer to the hot-debated Darwin’s missing link theory. How would such a disaster have killed the many millions of human being, and only a handful of them survive? Scientists believe humans in those times were hunters or gatherers and would die of famine when a sixyear long winter hit. They have also proven that high atmospheric winds blew the Toba

volcanic ash more to the Northern hemisphere and killed instantly the northerners. Africa, south of equator, was not hit as bad as the northern parallel and therefore there our ancestors could have survived, as modern DNA test proves. (This was the case when another super-volcano, Mt Tambora, on the island of Sumbawa in East Nusa Tenggara, blew a catastrophic explosion in 1815. Northern Europe, USA and Canada were the one suffered the most. The epic novel Frankenstein tells all about this dissaster ). While this human population bottleneck theory still requires further investigations and more scientific discoveries, evidence of the direct impacts of the global cool climate

49

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

of rock and ash pumped out to the sky to fall down in other part of the world as the earth rotated.

change and their aftershocks were inevitable. Scientists have proved ash, rock and volcanic debris of Toba were and are still being unearthed worldwide; from India to Greenland and America. Toba, so scientists worldwide believe, was the epicenter of world’s most dramatic upheaval ever happened during the modern human era. Visitors to Lake Toba today could easily picture the dramatic event by simply observing the physical feature of the massive lake. What would have been the apex of Mount Toba longer exists, disappearing in the form

50

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

What would be a caldera doesn’t look such. It is a massive ocean tens of kilometers in distance from one ridge to the other. Mount Toba, otherwise, keeps growing right in the middle of the lake. The baby volcano, otherwise known as Samosir, is an island with living volcano right in the middle of it. Seventy four thousand years now, Toba is an attractive lake and the must see attraction of North Sumatra. The lake and the surrounding area is occupied by Batak tribe, known Indonesia-wide for their unique personality and tradition, and especially for their bravery and courage, reminiscent of the catastrophe. Uniquely, although Sumatra is the epicenter of disaster, it is on this island that orang pendek, or short men, are known to still exist until today. Orang pendek is believed to be the species that closely feature resemblance to the human being, rather than apes. The missing link rediscovered! They have been

encountered somewhere from South Sumatra to as far as Mount Leusers, near lake Toba. First made public during the Dutch colonization while opening forest for plantation, orang pendek (thus said so for their size of only about 100 cm tall) are still found by villagers to live in the vast forest area of the island.

How to get there? Lake Toba is fast accessed by bus from the neighboring capital of Medan, where its airport serves international flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hon Kong. Accommodation is available either on the main harbor, or more preferably on the quieter island. The Samosir Island, actually the current, real peak of the former massive volcano, is famous for its biking and trekking routes, with unique villages featuring elevated housing complex and dance tradition. Strong Christian tradition and churches with local architectures and its helpful people make this island exceptionally beautiful. It’s definitely worth a visit.

WORLD

SILENCE FOR A GOLDEN EARTH By Bali Creative Community

W

orld Silent Day (WSD) is public campaign all over the world to be held on March 21 every year as part of the global movement to reduce the impacts of the climate change to our beloved planet earth. WSD encourages everyone, in any place in the world to get involved by lessening their activities particularly reducing the use of motorized vehicles and energy and switching off most electronic devices for four hours only during 10.00 – 14.00 on every March 21. WSD was conceived prior to Climate Change Conference (COP 13 UNFCCC) in Bali, December 2007, as a contribution of the Balinese community to tackle climate change. Several non-government organizations (NGO) in Bali establish Bali Collaboration on Climate Change (BCCC) to facilitate community participation in conveying the aspiration on climate justice. BCCC is supported by other religious and cultural figures, academic and other groups in Bali. We at Bali Creative Community fully supports this noble cause because we believe reverberating silence for a moment, rejuvenates mother earth for a life time and saving the world impacts directly to saving human kind. As part to socialize the praxis of World Silent Day, Bali Creative Community has been inviting artists and art lovers a like to showcase their care and desires for the augmentation of World Silent Day through the creation of a creative media campaign every year. These artworks are then made public, and showcased to compound the importance of WSD.

SILENT DAY Poster by Indra Widi

We believe that artistic and aesthetic presentations not only enlightens the mind, but also soothes the body and conveys close to the heart messages to nurture the soul. We are convinced that art possesses the power to communicate the fine personal qualities and distinct moral principles of silence for a golden earth. We trust creative communities should take part and be the driving force to globalize proactive participation to revive our awe-embracing

mother earth. Bali Creative Community proudly participating in Kuala Lumpur Design Week 2010 from 1-16 May 2010 to showcasing some creative campaign for World Silent Day created by inspiring artists and designers from the island of Bali and Yogyakarta. WSD is a universal caring that draws inspiration from the local geniuses of culture from all of the world. We do comprehend that conservation and preservation is widely practiced all over the globe although termed, spoken and practiced in diverse manners. For communities in Bali, the contemporaries of WSD has close proximity to the celebration the local genius of Nyepi. Nyepi stems from sipeng or sepi which literaly means silence. The essence of Nyepi is to revive and express lovingly grattitude to the universe by making time to limit activities for one whole day as it is believed in silence, the fine vibrations of our beloved mother earth is comprehensible and glaringly percievable to us, the human kind. WSD is a calling for human kind to contemplate and create equilibriums of harmony for the betterment of tomorrows. Based on this universal truth, WSD encourages individual contribution from all, of any nationality, religion and race, to reduce green house gas emission and to focus on ecological approaches and creative outlets as a common interest. Speak your silence and show your creative support for the golden earth! Holiday

Tips & Tricks!!! By Dr. Patrick Monsarrat

Ah! the beautiful turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean… A holiday dream destination or a vacation nightmare??? Here are some precautions to avoid seeing your dream turn into nightmare! Our sun is very hot and our underwater world rich in coral, sea urchins, sea snakes and more, bringing danger to the unsuspecting traveler..! Sunbathing Beware, oh you white skin tourist that barely landed to discover this South East Asian paradise… Surya, the Balinese Sun God is awaiting you! After a long plane trip, your body is tired and your defenses down. It is therefore best, for the first day or so, to rest in the shady comfort of a “bale” rather than lay down on a lounge chair in full sun poolside, where, inevitably, you will fall asleep and cook to a crisp… Remember, we are below the equator and, here, the sun is really hot! Even covered with 50spf protective cream, you risk a sunburn, of varying severity, depending on the length of exposure, the amount of sunshine and your skin sensitivity. It would be a shame to ruin your holidays the first day… Alternatively, to tone down

58

The Amazing East | Volume 01 Issue 05

the effects of jetlag and boost your body to produce melanin, the pigment necessary to tan, take melatonin…before departure! If all else fails, get a hold of some aloe vera gel to soothe your red burning skin…

Bali Kiss When we think “burns” in Bali, it’s not only sunburns…It’s also the famous “Bali Kiss”, that exquisite contact of your calf with the burning hot exhaust pipe of your rented motorbike! This burn (2nd or 3rd degree), must be treated immediately. Wash the burn with clean water and remove all burnt skin. Avoid infection by applying an antiseptic (betadine), followed by an antibiotic cream (bioplacenton). Leave it open so it can heal. Clean and disinfect several times a day and avoid contact with water. If

you see no improvement in a few days, seek medical care.

Coral Varuna, the God of the Sea awaits you for some beautiful exploration but beware…for danger lurks underwater also! Coral cuts often deposit, deep in the wound, tiny particles (coral particles, nematocysts, etc.) that foster inflammation and infection, explaining the lengthy healing. If, unfortunately, you cut yourself with coral, thoroughly clean the wound with a soft brush to eliminate micro particles, then disinfect with betadine and allow the cut/abrasion to dry. Applying lime juice has proven effective as well. Lime juice is thought to dissolve the calcium carbonate contained in the coral’s skeleton, thus only

leaving behind the cellular matrix to be eliminated. White vinegar and ammonia are also very effective against coral and jelly fish. Local application of antibiotic may be effective. Save oral antibiotics for serious and confirmed infections. Tetanus vaccine is recommended.

Sea Urchins DO NOT REMOVE the broken quills. First, saturate the affected area with white vinegar, lime juice or bleach. Wait a few minutes, then carefully remove the quills with tweezers (previously disinfected!). The quills should come out easier after being softened as explained above. White vinegar is also effective in the treatment of External Ear infection (usually caused by fungus), frequent in tropical areas (especially if you dive in fresh water or swim in rivers).

and sought by some for their skin and their flavor. There are about 40 species! Though all venomous, they rarely bite and often allow you to touch them. Their small mouth doesn’t really allow them to bite except for the palmed area of our fingers and toes. If you were bitten, an anti-venom would need to be administered.

Drownings Whether a strong swimmer or not, be very careful. Strong currents and undertows exist along our beaches (Kuta, etc.) and are very dangerous, resulting in many drownings every year. Typically, these currents are bands of water, long and narrow, that pull any object/ person away from shore.

Sea Snakes

Rule No.1 DO NOT PANIC. Do not attempt to swim against the current, towards the beach. It is the best way to get tired and drown.

They are not legends. Belonging to the Hydrophidae Family, distant cousins of the cobras, they are common in our regions

Rule No. 2 Swim parallel to the beach, even if the current continues to pull you away from shore.

Generally, these strips of water are only about 40m wide and 100m long. Once out of the current, continue to swim parallel to the beach for a bit and then slowly head back towards the beach. Armed with this information, you are now better prepared to enjoy your holidays. Don’t forget your survival kit (sun cream, vinegar, lime, bleach and tweezers)!!!
