The American Black Hereford
n the month of June, board member Logan Hill, ABHA member Dirk Hoagland and I had the privilege of attending the 50th anniversary conference of the Beef Improvement Federation in Loveland Colorado. Just to refresh your memory the Beef Improvement Federation, or better known as BIF, is the organization that makes the recommendations for data collection and sets protocol for the beef industry. BIF also makes predictions and recommendations in regards to customers and market trends. They are the guiding light that helps us plan for the future of our industry. I haven’t attended a BIF conference in which I have left disappointed. In fact since the ABHA resumed participating and attending the conference a few years ago it has been very helpful to our association in planning toward the future. This year was no exception. One interesting trend I noticed during a breakout session was that, now more than ever, the trend for black hided cattle continues to grow and that’s good news for our breed. Even more interesting was the fact that some of the sessions focused more on what we as an industry should be careful not to do, rather than what we should do. The point being made is that we shouldn’t follow the path that contributed to the downfall of the private sector swine business and some examples in the dairy. This was an interesting approach by the presenters as a way for our industry to succeed and continue in the private section. As I tried to absorb all the information I could from each session, I found myself thinking about our association. It is obvious how many advancements we have made in the Black Hereford breed including the improvement of our genetics and growth. It is evident that both the industry and cattlemen have accepted us as a breed and they now realize that our breed is having a positive impact. I won’t go into detail and make a list of all of our accomplishments as a breed. Those of you that have been active the last few years are very aware of that fact. So the questions remain what now, where do we go from here and how do we maintain the growth that we have enjoyed the past few years. As an association the answer is easy we keep pushing forward just as have been doing. As an organization the work and projects never end, as

a matter of fact the more we grow the more the work load increases. I think we as breeders must from time to time take a step back and examine our own programs. As our association moves forward and evolves we as breeders must also. Ask yourself questions like, is my herd genetics improving at the rate of the overall organization. Does my data reporting reflect my cattle’s traits as good as my fellow Black Hereford breeders and am I expanding my sales and customer base. These are the type of questions that we all need to occasionally ask ourselves. Black Hereford breeders have always worked together and helped each other. As an association I think most of us have always felt that there is enough market share for all of us, especially the way the popularity of the breed has caught fire. Nothing in regards to those statements has changed nor should it, but are you as individual breeders doing what you need to do to keep up with the trends. Hopefully you can answer yes. We need to be careful and not fall asleep as the parade continues on without us. As seedstock producers we all know we need to improve with each generation, refine our data reporting and keep informed about what’s going on in our breed. That’s a given. Most breeders set goals, some are harder to achieve than others, either one is ok. The important thing is that we strive to achieve those goals. When you reach those goals you should reset the bar and maybe this time set it a little higher. This is where we sometimes get ourselves into trouble. Maybe we get a little lazy or worn down but resetting your goals is what will separate you from the rest of the pack. This is what makes the difference in a good producer and a great producer. Maybe it’s time we look around and take this year’s BIF conference approach regarding things that we as breeders shouldn’t be doing. It’s much harder to crawl out of a hole that one has fallen into rather than to keep looking ahead and stay on a steady path. It’s a hard road to follow to stay at the top of your game but Black Hereford Breeders have proven themselves worthy of the challenge. You should be proud of what you have accomplished and even more importantly what we as a breed are planning to accomplish in the future. ABHA

T
he ABHA leadership underwent some changes this Spring. Charles Crow resigned from his board seat as well as the Treasurer position. Currently, the Treasurer position is being filled in the interim by ABHA’s bookkeeper, Debby Charrier, while Mr. Crow’s director seat remains vacant. Executive Director Brian Chism also resigned his position at the end of April. The Board has been interviewing several candidates to fill this position, so hopefully we will have good news soon.

n April, the board worked with GeneSeek and Digital Beef to streamline our genotyping process. The interface between the breeders and these two companies should continue to get easier as more kinks are worked out and our relationships build. Work has been completed to get the Black Hereford breed into the show at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, KY this year. Show dates and pertinent information will be available in the following weeks. In June, the officers travelled to Loveland, CO to attend the Beef Improvement Federation’s 50th annual meeting. David Riley and Lauren Hanna to iron out issues with our contemporary grouping and EPD runs. Our next EPD run will be coming out soon and we are expecting to find more accuracy in our data. Also in June several Board members attended the Junior National show in Bowling Green, KY.

There will be three Board seats up for election at the National Meeting in Sedalia, MO. Two fullterm (5 year) seats that expire in 2023 will be available, currently held by Vice-President Marc Smith and Tim Campbell, and the seat vacated by Charles Crow will be put up for election for a three year term to expire in 2021. This was done to make the Board seat term rotation work correctly so that there is at least one expiration and election every year. I am hopeful that you are all having a good summer and look forward to a productive and profitable Fall and Winter. ABHA

2018 Junior National Show T
he 2nd annual ABHA Junior Nationals was held June 27 -June 30 at the L.D. Brown Convention Center in Bowling Green, KY and it was a great success. At the event 62 animals were entered and 29 junior members competed in their respective classes as well as many other events which included sales, judging, showmanship and a team fitting contest. The event was kicked off on Thursday morning by ABHA President Tim Tarter during the opening ceremonies that included special guest and keynote speaker Warren Beeler from the Governor’s Office of Agriculture Policy. Juniors that participated, represented 10 states from across the country. Friday was a busy day with many competitive events going on and Friday night an awards banquet was held that recognized the winners of that days events, along with the announcement of scholarship winners and the crowning of the ABHA Queen. During the banquet a silent auction was also held from items donated by the juniors and all of those proceeds went to support the association junior program. On Friday the Juniors held their annual meeting and elected 4 new members to the Board of Directors. This completes a full 8 member board for the junior association. Junior Board members serve a 2-year term. During the meeting the new officers for the year were also elected.

All of the junior members have expressed that they want to become more active this year and hold some fundraising events. They also have indicated that they would like to be more involved in the planning of the junior event. The junior bylaws allow for up to 6 adult advisors to work with the junior board. We are now accepting volunteers for the advisory positions. The Junior committee did a fantastic job in planning the event this year. Thanks to all the sponsors and all of you that made donations. The ABHA would also like to thank all of the members that attended and worked so hard while at the event to help make everything run smooth and be successful. Special thanks goes to Teresa Tarter for all of her time and dedication to the ABHA in coordinating and pulling together the details of the event. The success of this event is a great testimony of ABHA members working together for one common purpose. These juniors are the future of our breed and as adult members, we should be very proud of the accomplishments that they have made. ABHA

SPECIAL THANKS to the Southeast Chapter of the American Black Hereford The American Black Hereford Summer Association for their generous sponsorship.
Cont’d from page 10 please be as correct as you can. All of you are calling for a calving ease EPD. That EPD is based strictly on calving difficulty. We are getting only a few calves reported in that category. Most all of them are being reported as unassisted. That’s fine if that is what they are. However until we get some different data right now all the bulls would show as a calving ease bull so to create the EPD without more data would be meaningless. The misconception that a problem reported in birth or reporting a poor weight reflects directly to your animals is incorrect. All of this data is compiled in a data base and adjusted up or down from the averages of the breed. We are continuing to adjust, refine and increase the size of our contemporary groups and the way that they are submitted to Dr. Riley in order to help them be more accurate. The Digital Beef system has allowed us to make these adjustments. Fall is just around the corner and plans have been made for the 2018 National meeting, show and heifer sale. This event has grown immensely over the years. Information regarding the event is in this issue of the magazine, posted on the website, and on Facebook. Dates for the event are November 8th-10th. We expect this year’s event to continue to grow. We are also excited to announce that we have been invited to participate in the 2018 North American International Livestock Expo in Louisville, KY. This is one of the largest livestock shows in the country and it is going
to be a great opportunity for us to bring attention to our breed. Our dates for the event is check in on November 13th and we will be showing on the morning of the 14th. I encourage all of you to try to plan and participate in the event with your show animals or attend and support our members that are showing. You can register for the national heifer sale, buy tickets for the national banquet, register for the National show, and the North American all online through our website. You can also mail in paper forms for any of these. Discounts are provided for registering online. Please review the deadlines for all events as they will be strictly adhered to. As always we will be having a silent auction at the awards Banquet. We are now accepting donations for the event. These donations go toward help funding the association events, scholarship and our Juniors. Many of you have been very gracious over the years in donating great items. Let’s all pitch in and come up with some great auction items. To donate to the silent auction please contact myself or Tammy Bargen.Tammy can be reached 402-2090958 or email kreifels2000@hotmail.com The board in the last meeting approved moving forward with a Southern Region Association sale for our breeders in that area. I want to thank all our members for their continued support of the breed and cooperation as we strive to improve our organization. ABHA

ANNOUNCES ITS PARTNERSHIP with ABS Global and Thomas Family Herefords to purchase the Top Selling Hereford Bull at the Performance Unlimited Bull Sale, March 28, 2018, in Creston, Iowa
Reg # 43779861 DOB 3/10/2017 Schu-lar Formula 409 ET x EFBEEF Schu-lar U332
SCHU-LAR EFBEEF 40E
As cattle feeders and the owners of a commercial feedyard with over 35 years of cattle feeding experience involving tens of thousands of head of cattle, we believe this bull could be a game changer. This young sire is unique! Study his performance on test: 5.83# Average Daily Gain (ADG), 3.39 Feed to Gain (F/G), both achievements would dramatically increase the profitability of cattle feeding. His 1.53 Residual Average Daily Gain is the best we have ever seen. With a feed cost of gain at 31.9 cents this young sire promises a new era of cost reducing beef production. Our close outs taken at the same time as these results were running in the mid 70 cent range for cost of gain. Imagine the genetic impact this bull could have on the beef industry. He is not a complete outlier. His sire SchuLar Formula 409 ET was the best performing (4.57# ADG) best converting (4.08 F/G) in the 2014 test when he was purchased by Knoll Crest Farm. We have every reason to believe this efficiency is a heritable trait. Semen available from ABS Global

Sales J&N Ranch Sells 80 Bulls to 43 Different Buyers in 16 States Sale Average: $4581
B
uyers from 16 states braved the cold temperatures on February 10th to purchase 80 Black Hereford Bulls. Auctioneer Tommy Barnes accepted offers in active bidding at an average sale price of $4581. This was the ranch’s second highest sale average ever in their February bull sale which grossed $366,500. Only their February, 2016 sale averaged higher when they sold 77 bulls for an average of $5077 each and brought in $390,900. The Hoagland Family hosted this their 28th Production Sale at the ranch in Leavenworth, Kansas, the Birthplace of Black Hereford cattle. ABHA Hall of Fame breeders, Joe and Norma Hoagland, registered the first Black Herefords back in 1997 and started the American Black Hereford Association. Fellow ABHA members, Randall and Eddy McCutcheon of DePauw, Indiana purchased the popular lot 85 bull, JN Balder E433, for $6,000. Also, attending the sale was ABHA Executive Director, Brian Chism of Bowling Green, Kentucky. (pictured below) The 80 bulls sold to 43 different buyers of which 20 were repeat customers. Bulls ranged in price from $8500 to $2500 each. Kansas State University purchased two bulls again this year. That brings to five the number of J&N Black Herefords in use at the nation’s largest beef science university. One of this year’s new buyers was a ranch in Hawaii that bought two bulls. They will become the first Black Herefords in the Nation’s 50th State. J&N’s next production sale will be held on October 13th at the ranch. Featured in the Fall sale will be all of J&N Ranch’s registered Black Hereford herd bulls used in their registered and commercial herds. Also selling will be every registered Black Hereford cow over the age of five. Some selected registered bred heifers, some commercial bred Black Hereford heifers and a large offering of F1 bred females will sell. For information visit www. blackhereford.com. ABHA

Small Acres Farm
S
pend much time talking with the owners of Small Acres Farm in Loogootee, Indiana and you’re likely to hear the phrase ‘quality over quantity’. For Donald and Wilma Seals and Rhonda, Dustin, Kenadi and Kortni Rumble the farm’s commitment to quality has allowed them to grow and find success with their registered Black Herefords. “It doesn’t cost any more to feed a good one that it does a bad one,” said Rhonda. “So, make sure you start out with the quality of animals that you want to produce and build from there.” Beginning In 1972 with the swine business Small Acres Farm was on the forefront of industry innovation as one of only two Primary Specific Pathogen Free hog facilities, meaning there was no contact with gilts to piglets and piglets were delivered via C-section. The farm raised a variety of pig breeds including Yorkshire, Hampshire, Duroc and Landrace. Small Acres Farm carried the innovative reproductive approach into their cattle business as well. Over the years they have produced Saler, Belted Galloway, Angus, Hereford, and beginning in 2014, Black Hereford cattle. The farm is primarily an artificial insemination and embryo transfer facility and they generally do not keep a mature bull.
The American Black Hereford
Their Black Hereford journey began at the Kentucky Beef Expo when Don and Wilma saw the ABHA Kentucky State Association booth. “Since Small Acres had Herefords and Angus, it was a fit,” they said. Don and Wilma decided to travel the country, covering 7,300 miles to visit breeders and study the breed. At the 2014 National Sale they purchased their first Black Herefords as part of a joint venture and a year later the Rumble family officially joined the farm. Small Acres found success with their Black Herefords winning a wide array of shows and awards. At the 2018 Junior National Show Kenadi and Kortni brought home the Grand Champion Purebred Heifer and Bull, Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Heifer and Steer. Kenadi also serves as the current ABHA Queen, proudly representing the breed at shows and sales all over. ABHA
The Rumbles and Seals began working together in 2010 when ten year old Kenadi met Don. “She wanted to show cattle and Don had cattle to be 28
shown,” said Rhonda. The team settled on an Angus heifer named Ritter. Don halter broke Ritter and Kenadi went to the farm several days a week to wash, brush and work with him. “This led to lots of other animals along the way,” Rhonda said. “Kenadi would sit with Don and study EPD’s and bulls for breeding. Together they would make breeding decisions and plan out the breeding schedule.”

ABHA Board Votes to Remove Projected EPDs from F1 and Hereford Influenced Calves
D
uring last month’s business meeting, the ABHA board of directors voted to remove the projected EPDS from all new F1 calves and the projected EPDs of Red Hereford influenced calves. F1 females are not a registered Black Hereford; they are issued a certificate that allows the ABHA to track their lineage. Their EPDs have never been calculated and evaluated as part of the Black Hereford EPDs. Though F1 females are not considered as a Black Hereford they are important to us as ABHA Breeders. We certificate them so that we can verify parentage and track pedigrees. F1s are a vehicle through which we introduce quality foundation genetics from our parent breeds of Angus and Hereford. We are a hybrid, breed up association. Your foundation genetics are very important especially as small as our gene pool is at this time. As stated above, the ABHA has never calculated EPDs on F1 females because they are not recognized as a Black Hereford. The projected EPDs that you have seen in the past for F1 females truly have no value in evaluating the performance of those cattle. You may have noticed, those EPDs never change, and this is due to the fact that they are never calculated. If you want to evaluate the genetics in those F1 females you should be reviewing the current EPDs of the dam and sire through their respective breeds. The board has also voted to remove the projected EPDS of Red Hereford influenced calves within the Black Hereford breed. In case you were not aware, Red Hereford EPDs have never been used in our calculated EPDs. The EPDs of a Red Hereford bull or female have no direct influence on the EPDs of your Black Herefords. You may have wondered why animals that have been mated with a Red Hereford in some instances changed so much after an EPD run. That’s because the projected EPD was determined by averaging the EPDs of the parent Red Hereford and Black Hereford. There is no conversion table for Red Hereford EPDs to Black Hereford EPDs so you can’t compare the two. When they are calculated the EPD is based strictly on the Black Hereford animal and somewhat on the performance data of the calf itself. The difference in this type of mating and F1s, is that the Red Hereford paired with a Black Hereford is part of the Black Hereford Breed as a registered animal and that animal is accepted for calculation based on the Black Hereford EPDs. The question has been asked “well if we are not using the Red Hereford EPDS why I am breeding to those animals?” The answer is: to bring those quality genetics and out-cross genetics that we need and want from Red Herefords in order to diversify blood lines. You need to be evaluating the performance of those calves and not just the EPDS. Current Red Hereford EPDs are available on the American Hereford Association (AHA) website for review. Use those EPDs to help you make mating decisions with your Black Hereford, and add the traits you need; however, it is best to avoid comparing them to Black Herefords EPDs, because they are calculated different. There is no conversion table for Angus or Hereford to Black Hereford. The conversion of Angus and Red Hereford is still being refined. A lot of work is being done at the Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center
Nebraska. Hopefully, someday they will refine the process but at this time even their research will tell you it is somewhat accurate and that a lot of the conversion accuracy depends on the accuracy of the animal within their respective breed. There is still a lot of debate out on this subject by the researchers. You will notice that your calves that have one parent registered with the AHA, no longer have EPDs. This is temporary. The association has been doing only one EPD evaluation per year. By voting to remove the projected EPDs from this type mating it would have left these Black Hereford calves without EPDs for as much as 11 months. The board understands that this is not acceptable especially for marketing purposes. In order to solve this problem, the board also approved doing multiple EPD runs per year. Once this practice is in place, no calf should go for an extended time from the date of birth, without calculated EPDs. The number one complaint voiced by breeders is the accuracy of our EPDs in relationship to a particular animal’s progeny and performance. EPDs are a very important tool if understood and used correctly. As a board we fully understand your frustration because we too are breeders. EPDS are a numbers game. The more good data, the bigger mean average you have to work with for comparison. The volume of data reported plays a vital role towards developing accuracy. That’s why we struggle with EPDs as a small breed and also the reason that every piece of properly recorded data, by you the breeder, is so important The board and breed improvement committee have done a tremendous amount of work this year, in refining the data that we present for our EPD run. It is important that we send as much usable and properly submitted data as is available. I think in a few short years you will see our EPDs start to settle down and have much more meaning than they have had in the past. We are also very excited about the possibility of genomic enhancement of our EPDs in the near future. You will be hearing much more about that in the coming months. From the very beginning of the association, the bylaws, rules, and mission statement were to create a performance bred, purebred Black Hereford that would add heterosis, improve grading ability, and produce offspring with a black hide. This is what many of you, as Black Hereford breeders, have been striving to achieve for some time. The realization of those efforts is starting to become apparent as more and more breeders have reached purebred status in their herds. As most of you know Black Hereford cattle may not be registered in the association until they are 62.5 % Hereford (see ABHA bylaws for registration.) Purebred cattle have a lot of value if they have the performance bred in each generation of development. It is a personal choice whether to keep your cattle at a percentage level or work toward the purebred status. There are many percentage Black Herefords that are very good cattle and have a place in today’s market. Percentage Black Herefords remain an important part of the breed. As a breed we have come a long way in a short time but we still have much to do. I know our breed has a bright future ahead of us. We will cross the threshold if we all work together. ABHA Summer

May I Help You?
ost of us have heard this over the past year from one of these 2 ladies. Both Jennifer Roach and Cheryl Minyard work for the Chianina Cattle Association which is located in Platte City Missouri. When we purchased the Digital Beef system the functions and operations of it were new to all of us. Our associations number of registrations, transfers, and data reporting had expanded to the point that we needed more staff in the customer service area and we needed someone that had experience with the Digital Beef System. In our search for more staff and a solution to handle our growth, I was put in contact with Andee Marston the Executive D irector for the Chianina Association. Andy informed us that they were considering doing some outsource contracting in the customer service Cheryl Minyard area. The Chianina was a perfect fit. They had the staff and the experience with the Digital Beef system. After a few phone calls and conversations a deal was made and the board approved the contract for them to become our customer service agent. We

have our own line that the staff answers as ABHA. While Jennifer is handling the most of the ABHA service, Cheryl handles the over flow for us. Jennifer & Cheryl know the system inside and out, both ladies are very versed and capable of handling anything our customers need. The staff has started to learn each members operation and each members need. More than that they have picked up on and understand our rules and breeding protocol. Those of you that have worked with them know what we are talking about. They are sharp and on the ball. We have never had a complaint of any kind, and that is rare. This has been one of the best business decisions that the ABHA has ever made in regard to customer service. We are so glad to have them as part of our team and we are very grateful for all that they do for our members in Jennifer Roach providing excellent service. We hope putting a face with the voices will help our members and say welcome aboard to the ABHA family Jennifer and Cheryl. ABHA

his year the AJBHA had its second annual junior nation show, and it was a success. There were some great animals exhibited that really portrayed what the breed strives to produce. As well as some tough competition in the fitting contest, the junior livestock judging, and our new contest the ag sells. Congratulations to all of our winners of the weekend of fun and excitement. The AJBHA added four new board members to make an eight-member board and elected new officers as well as adding in three new office positions. The new board has decided that we want to be more active in the association and want out fellow junior members to voice their opinions to us so we can try to bring new and exciting things into the association. We plan on having at least one project for the junior association to participate in this year to try to get our junior members more active in the breed. So stay tuned to see what this year’s project will be. At our second junior national show we inducted the associations first queen and her name is Kenadi Rumble from Small Acres Farm in Loogootee IN, as well as selecting two juniors to receive a scholarship from the association for the upcoming academic year. The scholarship winners are Kenadi Rumble and Grady Yeggy. Congratulations to these two juniors. Just a reminder that the national show and sell is in November and shortly after the ABHA has been asked to show at the North American in Louisville KY, so keep up the hard work and we look forwarded to seeing what the junior members bring to both. Congratulations to all of our show and contest winners again.

ABHA Board of Directors Approves Southern Sale By Tim Tarter
T
he association’s national heifer sales have been a great success over the years. However as hard as we try it is difficult to select a venue that is geographically suitable for all of our valuable breeders. The last three years the board of directors along with several breeders from Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and several other southern states have been discussing the possibility of having an association sale for breeders in that region. Earlier this spring a survey was sent out to many members in those areas in order to gather information and gauge the overall interest for such an event. Many of you responded and the interest was very high. Last month the board of directors unanimously approved moving forward with the sale. We are just starting to plan for the event so the exact location, date, and details of the event are still being worked out. You will be seeing much more information about the event in the coming months. We plan to have the first Southern region association sale in the spring of 2019. I would encourage all of you in that area to start planning and thinking about some of your consignments. As always it is important that we make this first event highly successful and I encourage all of you to select some of your best. The association will be setting the guidelines and handling all the
details of the sale. As with any sale your cooperation in preparing for the event is needed. I have been involved in many sales including our own production sale. Some of the biggest frustration in preparing for an event such as this is consignors getting there information to us in a timely and correct fashion. We want this to be a first class event. Sale rules, standards, and guidelines will be set that must be adhered to. It takes a lot of time, dedication and volunteers to organize an event as this. The ABHA will take the lead and handle all the arrangements but we will need members support and some volunteer work to make it all happen. As an association it is our responsibility to our members to help them improve their genetics, data reporting, promote their cattle and our breed in the industry. Much more information along with specific details will be coming soon. Watch your emails, ABHA magazine, and the association’s Facebook page. This is another giant step forward for the ABHA. I hope all of you will support the event by consigning cattle or attending as a member and a potential buyer. Let’s make a statement about our breed and make this a special event. ABHA

Chapter News Indiana The Indiana breeders have been working to become a recognized breed at the Hoosier Beef Congress. December 2018 will be the first time the American Black Hereford will have our own breed show at HBC. We will also be working the Indiana Beef Cattle Association booth at the Indiana State Fair in August. So load up the family and come out to fair. Better yet, load up your show calves and let’s show them out best in December. Information on HBC can be found at hoosierbeefcongress.com ABHA
