Quality Consistency Why - The Black Hereford Breed was developed from a vision to produce black

hided cattle for commercial cattlemen. In staying with this vision—We, at Kroening Black Herefords, are working to produce purebred Black Hereford cattle that will put extra dollars into the pockets of commercial cattlemen.

How -

w Through additional hybrid vigor that only purebreds can provide in a cross w DNA profiling gives producers the extra assurance our cattle will bring additional feed efficiency and carcass qualities to their feeder calves w Through quiet females bred to keep the maternal qualities producers want in replacement females

The Reason - Show cattle look beautiful but we are more concerned about

what is under the “hide”. Our goal is to produce high quality working cattle that can produce offspring for commercial producers and show enthusiasts.

Presidents Thoughts

“Gems of the Rockies”

I Tim Tarter ABHA President

would like to start off by saying I hope everyone had time during the holidays to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. We often during the year seem to forget just how lucky we are. As president of the ABHA I want to express my thanks to all of you for being so supportive of the association and for your confidence and support toward me, the board and our breed. In November at our National meeting we elected 3 new members to the ABHA board of director and 2 members of the board rotated off. I want to express my thanks to both of those members for the time that they devoted as board members. I would like to say a special thanks to Marc Smith who had served 2 terms as a director and the past 4 years as Vice President. I couldn’t have asked for a better Vice President. It’s not that Marc always agreed with me nor did he always support my way of thinking on board issues but he was always there for me to bounce my thoughts and ideas off of him. We spoke several times each week discussing ABHA business. Marc and his family’s belief and dedication to the breed is a shining example for everyone. With the new members of the board of directors in place, our planning and work for the association for 2019 has begun. The board is in agreement that this is an important year for us as an association. Though we have enjoyed enormous success the last few years the board feels that this is the year we need to put a lot of efficiencies on how our breed can improve and be of benefit to the commercial industry. Over the years we significantly increased the use of our breed in commercial herds. We still have to do more. Commercial cattlemen using our bulls and our females are going to be the key for the large scale growth and acceptance of our breed. The board is reviewing and discussing many different ideas and possibilities as to how to be successful in our efforts to accomplish our goals. The cattle market is almost like the stock market, it goes up and down like a yo-yo. In the world political arena it appears at this time some

REGISTERED BLACK HEREFORDS of the trade tensions may be relaxing some. This is likely to trend cattle prices upward for the spring of this year. That’s as far as I will dare to tread as far as predicting producer cattle prices this year. Those of you that have been in this business very long know that you ride the highs and lows of the business. If it doesn’t bounce back it will be the first time. I know some of you were discouraged as the average for the national heifer sale was down. While a few animals sold well over all it was pretty tough. If it is any consolation this is not a direct hit toward Black Herefords. Cattle sale prices are extremely low at this time everywhere and in every breed. In comparison to many other breeds, ours is still better than some. Green grass, warm weather, and an early spring can almost overnight boost the market. The bright spot in all of this is that in my conversations with many of our breeders the demand and interest in our bulls for commercial use is stronger than ever. This is going to pay big dividends in the near future as producers see the results in pounds and in the quality of their calves from using Black Hereford bulls. We just have to ride the storm out. Lows like we are currently facing is one of the many reasons we have to continually carve our way into the commercial industry more and more. When you have a broader customer base it gives you more opportunity to market your product even in a lull. As a board we must be more creative in marketing and promoting our breed. The board and members know that we have a superior product. The important thing is that we have to keep pushing and spreading the word. The greatest product in the world doesn’t sell unless the seller promotes it and buyers understand the benefits of the product. The ABHA board of directors must continue the trend of the last 4 years by sending a positive message to the industry and work together in order to accomplish our goals for the betterment of our breed and members. Greatness for our breed and members is just around the corner let’s not let it slip away from us. ABHA

e had another eventful Fall with the American Black Hereford Association. In October, the Board voted to host a sale in Texas in the Spring of 2019. Details on this event will follow in later publications. Also in October, the board created an award for highly productive females in our breed, the Dam of Supremacy Award. This award will be tracked in our pedigrees so that anyone who is looking at your stock can see the qualifying animals in your herd, notated as DOS. The purpose of this award is to reward breeders who are creating highly productive and profitable cattle. A basic rundown of the qualify-

the ABHA will now be able to track data submissions back two years and assign EPD’s accordingly. In January a warning letter will be sent to individual members that are at risk of losing the EPD’s due to a lack of data submission on their herds. Starting in January of 2020 EPD’s will no longer be displayed on animals that are disqualified.

The purpose of this award is to reward breeders who are creating highly productive and profitable cattle.

Association Update Tim Tarter

I

t has been a busy and eventful year for the association. Once again we grew in record breaking fashion. The National show and sale held in November in Sedalia, MO boasted huge growth in attendance and participation. The national heifer sale average price was down quite a bit due to the current trend in the overall cattle market. While a few animals sold well most were well below what we would normally expect. The board is considering making some changes to the national heifer sale next year. We feel we need to make an effort this year to attract more commercial breeders to our sale. Black Hereford cattle have become more accepted and calves from our breed are performing great in commercial herds. We have to concentrate more on the benefits of Black Herefords to the commercial industry. The next week following the national event many breeders traveled to Louisville KY and we once again made history in the breed by participating in the North American International Livestock Exposition. Our breeders made us proud and our cattle got a lot of attention. Currently the board is making plans for the location of the national event for next year. We are also considering another major cattle show for the breed to participate in. Last year as most of you know we negotiated a contract thru Neogen to perform the entire DNA testing for our breed. These DNA test, specifically the 50 k is building data that will be valuable to us in the near future in creating genomic enhanced EPDs for our breed. This is going to be the fastest and most accurate way that the ABHA can create dependable EPDs that have value. The DNA testing will also allow us to expand our EPD categories. Dr. Lauren Hanna from North Dakota state who was our guest speaker at the Nationals this year is compiling that data monthly. The board is current reviewing a new contract with Neogen in order to hopefully make more different types of DNA testing available to us. Spring is closer than we think and that of course is a busy time for everyone. Several Black Hereford Production sales will be coming up soon and that will provide cattlemen opportunities to purchase Black Hereford bulls and females. The ABHA Board voted last year to sanction and hold a spring production sale in the Southwest. We have secured the date of March 30th and a great facility east of Dallas Texas. The sale is open to any of our ABHA members that wish to consign cattle. The sale will offer bulls along with open and bred heifers. The consignment availability will be on a first -come first-serve basis. The sale will be produced under the direction of the association. Rules, standards and guidelines that have been set forth by the ABHA will be strictly adhered

BLACK HEREFORDS to. For more information or to consign animals you can go the ABHA website and consign your animals online. I urge you to review the rules and guidelines carefully. Much more information will be following very soon. If you have question you can contact any board member or our Sale committee Chairman Jason Schroeder at 573-680-1439 sbh8627@gmail. com or ABHA President Tim Tarter at 606-305-2289 or tim@blackhereford.org. The association hopes to expand these type of sales to different regions of the country each year. The association will again be displaying and participating in the NCBA Tradeshow that will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana January 30th-February 1st. This is the largest cattle tradeshow in the world. Participating in the show allows us the opportunity to speak with many cattle producers from all over the world and gain a lot of exposure for our breed. The association magazine has been a valuable tool for both the association and the breeders. It continues to grow. I always encourage you as members to submit names of interested people in the cattle business that might become a potential member or customer. At the present time the magazine is free to anyone that is interested in receiving it. This is an association owned magazine and it is entirely about our breed and industry news that is of interest to cattlemen. This not only helps promote our breed it also increases our circulation and makes it more attractive to potential advertisers that help support the cost of the magazine. Anytime you have a name feel free to send it to tim@blackhereford.org or call the office. The grant that we received thru the state of KY will be wrapping up in May. From all indications we will be able to capitalize on the full grant amount that was approved. The total grant comes to around $80,000. This grant has given the association the financial boost we needed and has allowed us to expand and develop a lot of items more quickly than we could have without it. The grant money has been allowed to be used to benefit all members and the growth of the association. KY’s only requirement in awarding us the grant was that we locate our National Headquarters in the state for 5 years and that our employees be based in the Headquarters office in Bowling Green, KY. This does not apply to our customer service team in Platte City, MO. The ABHA has seen a huge transition and improvement in the last 4 years, from the way we register and submit data on our cattle to the vast improvement of our genetics. One thing we can’t control is the price and the market trends. We can keep doing all the good things that you as breeders have been doing over the past few years. Black Hereford cattle are having an impact. It’s up to us to determine just how much. I want to wish all of you a great spring season. ABHA

AGRICULTURE & NUTRITION ACT OF 2018

AGRICULTURE & NUTRITION ACT OF 2018

HOUSE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE

1

FARM BILL TOP 10 HIGHLIGHTS

FARM POLICY

The Agriculture & Nutrition Act of 2018 works to address the 5-year, 52-percent decline in the farm economy by providing certainty that an extension of current policy cannot provide. The bill reauthorizes and strengthens the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) options through 2023. Producers are given an opportunity to make a new election between ARC and PLC with several improvements, including allowing a new yield update opportunity for producers who were facing severe drought during the previous yield update, allowing reference prices to adjust to improved market conditions, and prioritizing the use of RMA data for administering ARC to minimize disparities between counties.

NUTRITION

Over 35 improvements are made to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s flagship nutrition program. Most notably, existing work requirements are strengthened, streamlined and paired with a variety of options to increase opportunities for SNAP recipients, including participating in a fully-funded, guaranteed Employment & Training (E&T) slot. Individuals may choose not to participate, but they will no longer be eligible for SNAP. The farm bill maintains vital nutrition assistance for those in need while making a historic commitment to helping recipients improve their outlook in life.

3 5

TRADE

CONSERVATION

CROP INSURANCE

At the request of virtually every farmer, rural banker and rural business in the country, the farm bill protects crop insurance. Some improvements are made but, overall, the farm bill doesn’t fix what isn’t broken.

REGULATORY REFORM

One of the most consistent complaints policymakers hear from farmers and ranchers is about burdensome regulations. The farm bill streamlines and reduces regulatory burdens. For example, the bill includes commonsense reforms to the onerous and conflicting Endangered Species Act (ESA) consultation process regarding pesticide registration activities to ensure agricultural producers have access to the safest and most efficient modern crop protection tools. And, the bill cuts red-tape across the conservation programs, eliminating unnecessary and burdensome Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) and System for Award Management (SAM) registration requirements for producers.

Given escalating use of illegal trade actions by foreign countries, the farm bill stands by our nation’s farmers and ranchers, providing a strengthened safety net and authorizing and restoring funding for vital tools for trade promotion and market development. The farm bill also maintains long-standing legal authority for the secretary to provide assistance to farmers and ranchers affected by unfair foreign trading practices. The farm bill prioritizes working-lands conservation by retaining and folding the best features of the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) into the nation’s flagship incentive-based program for voluntary conservation—the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). This supports and enables a significant investment in emerging conservation practices like the use of cover crops.

HOUSE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE FARM BILL TOP 10 HIGHLIGHTS RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Rural areas of the U.S. should have the same access to broadband and infrastructure that urban areas do. The bill authorizes substantial annual appropriations for rural broadband and requires USDA to establish forward-looking broadband standards. The farm bill also strengthens the suite of rural development initiatives to promote jobs and economic activity in rural America where employment is suffering due to the sharp downturn in the farm economy. Finally, the farm bill provides the secretary the authority to prioritize projects that help communities meet the challenges of the opioid crisis.

ANIMAL HEALTH

8

The Agriculture & Nutrition Act of 2018 establishes a new National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program, designed to protect the health of the nation’s livestock sector. The program is modeled on the highly successful Plant Pest and Disease Management and Disaster Prevention Program that has strengthened USDA’s ability to protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources from foreign plant pest threats. The bill also establishes a new U.S.-only vaccine bank with priority for stockpiling Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccine and provides for the enhancement of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network.

SPECIALTY & ORGANIC CROPS

Specialty crops play an important role in the success of U.S. agriculture and are an essential component of our national food policy. The farm bill restores funding for Technical Assistance for Specialty Crops (TASC) under the new International Market Development Program. It also seeks to expand and improve crop insurance policies for specialty crops. The bill reauthorizes several programs that support marketing and promotion of these crops. It also makes key improvements to the Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI) and the Specialty Crop Block Grant program, while maintaining funding. Finally, the bill increases funding for the Organic Agriculture Research & Extension Initiative (OREI) and provides resources for combatting fraudulent imports of organic products coming into the U.S.

BEGINNING FARMERS & RANCHERS

The bill maintains several provisions to help beginning farmers and ranchers establish themselves in agriculture. The bill enhances access to crop insurance and establishes a scholarship program at 1890 Land Grant Institutions designed to assist students interested in careers in agriculture. Many of the challenges faced by beginning farmers and ranchers are intrinsically linked to those retiring producers. The 2018 Farm Bill establishes the “Commission on Farm Transitions – Needs for 2050” to examine additional policy changes needed to ensure that the U.S. maintains the safest, most abundant and most affordable food and fiber supply in the world.

10

This is a bipartisan bill – reflecting both Republican and Democrat priorities.

This bill makes investments in opportunities for SNAP recipients and improves program integrity, while delivering much-needed support and certainty to the countryside. Winter 2019

Winter Feeding of Bulls

W

inter is the time to properly condition bulls for the coming spring and summer breeding season. Proper conditioning of bulls is important because bull fertility has a major impact in determining whether a cow will conceive and calve early or late in the calving season and thus influence calf weaning weight and uniformity. In addition, because of the high (1:25 to 1:50) bull:cow ratio used for natural service, the fertility of the herd bull is much more important than in any individual cow. Indeed, for the beef breeder, fertility of the bull is 5 and 10 times more important than growth performance and product quality, respectively. Nutrition is the main factor, which influences “proper conditioning” of bulls and thus their fertility. How can we manage bulls so that they do not have impaired sex drive (libido) due to being either too fat or too thin? The target of the feeding program in winter is to allow the bulls to reach a moderate body condition score of 3 to 3.5 at breeding time (see Table 1). Once the bull has passed the breeding evaluation, the feeding program to attain a body condition score of 3 to 3.5 involves knowing the rate of gain the bulls should achieve in order to achieve the desired mature weight. Table 2 details target weights and daily gains necessary for growing bulls to achieve their full breeding potential. Diet recommendations for 500 to 1200 pound growing bulls and not finishing are designed to result in a growth rate of 3.0 to 3.5 lbs per day. The following are targets to aim for when balancing rations for growing bulls: • Dry matter (DM) intake – 2.7% of bodyweight at 500 lbs; 2.5 % of body weight at 1200 lb. • Energy – % Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) – 67.5% to 68.5% (DM basis). • Crude Protein – 13.5 % to 14 % (DM basis).

• Calcium – 0.55% (DM basis)

by breeding time.

• Phosphorous – 0.40% (DM basis).

There is no advantage to shoot for high rates of gain in growing bulls by feeding large amounts of grain. Do not coerce growing bulls to attain their maximum mature weight by overfeeding. Indeed, bulls that attain a moderate body condition score at the target weight for age for their breed have fewer breeding problems than bulls that have been overfed and thus are too fat for their weight.

• Calcium to Phosphorous ratio – within the range of 2:1 and 7:1 • Ensure that all trace minerals are adequate and vitamins A D & E are adequate. Use a good quality alfalfa-grass hay or cereal silage and coarse ground or rolled barley or whole oats for feeding growing bulls. A protein supplement may be required or 2 to 3 lbs of feed peas, or lentils may be used to supplement protein. Feed an ionophore such as Rumensin® in order to improve feed efficiency and to reduce the potential of bloat occurring. Feeding the grain/supplement mixture in two equal portions each day is another practice that producers can use to reduce the risk of bloat. The above growing ration recommendations should provide an excellent opportunity for development of the frame and muscle of growing bulls without fattening them. Adequate nutrition is equally important for young bulls after the breeding season for continued growth development and lifetime breeding potential. After the breeding season the growth rate should be about 2 lbs per day depending on the condition of the bull. Winter feeding of bulls that are 2 or more years old at breeding should be geared to reach the optimum breeding condition when they are put with the cows. If you calve in JanuaryFebruary, supplementary winter feeding of thin bulls (score of 2 or less) for gains as in Table 2 may be necessary. On the other hand, if breeding to calve in April-May, it may be possible to winter feed the same bulls at nearer a maintenance level and depend on spring grass to bring up the condition by breeding time. Judgement on the exact level of winter feeding needed depends on the condition of the bull as he goes into the winter. Thus, if he is in moderate condition (score of 3 or more), you should feed for lower winter gains aimed to hold his condition so that he will not become too fat

A

s we bring 2018 to a close and I look back at where the breed started this year, I am amazed to see the amount of growth that has been accomplished. We held the second Junior Nationals, where new contest ideas were brought to life, as well as electing four new board members to serve the junior association. The National show and sale was a success! And the breed was able to display some of our best cattle for the first time at the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE). These growths may seem small for some, but to me they are huge leaps in the right direction for the cattle industry. I would like to thank all the juniors for helping make this year a success for the Black Herefords. While at the National Show and Sale, the juniors participated in two fundraisers. We sold T-shirts with junior sponsors on the back as well as the annual hamburger and hot dog sale during the

3RD ANNUAL -

National sale. Thank you to all the sponsors and to everyone that supported the juniors during these fundraisers. The winner of the 2019 Junior National theme design contest was also chosen at the National Show. It came down to two very tough designs to choose from. With the agreement of the committee and the participants, we decided to select both. The two designs were very different but worked well together. Congratulations to Jeffrey Calvert and Kenadi Rumble. The theme for next year is going to be The Next Rising Star. The committee felt this theme was fitting with the amount of growth that has been displayed in the ABHA. On behalf the Junior Association, I would like to thank the ABHA board for helping us to accomplish our endeavors this year. I would also like to thank all of the Juniors for all of your hard work…keep it up. I hope that everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. ABHA

Sale Report

ABHA 2018 Financial Highlights Submitted by Charles Crow, Treasurer Our Association continues to show good signs of growth, registration income was up 29% over the 2017 year end, transfer fees grew by 71% and we had a record setting $26,000.00 income from our 2017 National Show and Sale! Membership continued to grow with a total membership income of $32,250.00, a growth of 20% over the prior year, even though we are now prorating the membership fees for those who join after the first quarter of the year. We had our first full year of income for all the Genetic testing and realized a total of $37,935.00 in income against a cost to the Association of $33,319.00. Genetic testing should continue to grow as our herds grow and new members build their herds. Our relationship with the American Chianina Association’s service department for cattle registrations and EPD data submittal seems to be

working well for the Association and Digital Beef continues to work on their software programming to make it more functional for our use. The board of directors feels that these services are both reasonably priced and hopefully they both will continue to work to improve their services and performance. The Association had a total income of $499,252.00 for the year with expenses totaling $461,259 for a net gain of $37,933.00 for the fiscal year. Total unrestricted cash in the bank at year end was $170,569.00, an increase of $29,137.00 from the prior year. The Junior Association Fund balance at year end was $9,079.00 and the Junior Scholarship Fund balance was $5,063.00.
