The committee is working to increase the amount and visibility of signage to move bicycle traffic away from vehicular traffic.

The meeting — the first of the club’s new season of activities — will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19, at the Island Library, 5701 Marina Drive, Holmes Beach.Hattersley, an author and former state representative, is campaigning against incumbent Republican

The next ScenicWAVES committee meeting will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at city hall.

The park was welcomed into the city’s line up of parks April 29, which was National Arbor Day.

The committee discussed alternatives regarding the denial of a request submitted to the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program for a Sarasota Bay Partners grant of $10,000 for improved wildlife education signage at beach entrances from 22nd Street North to 12th Street North along Gulf Drive, which is a scenic highway.

Liza Click, parks maintenance supervisor for Manatee County, said, “They are starting a case plan for Palma Sola and the causeway, pavilions, pier and bathrooms.”Clickdid not have specifics as to when the study would begin or end.

McClellan, the author of the Palma Sola Scenic Highway grant application, proposed asking the SBEP if the Palma Sola money could be shifted to ScenicWAVES in partnership with Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch and Shorebird Monitoring, Mote Marine Laboratory and Save Our Seabirds to fulfill the community engagement requirement.

Chappie has said the park deserves a more specific name considering Holmes Beach has a city field next to its city Chappiehall.said

In other matters, the committee continued its discussion of signage replacement along the scenic bicycle route, which runs from Gulf Drive, then east on

ScenicWAVES Chair Ingrid McClellan said the SBEP indicated the community engagement aspect of the city’s application was not as strong as those proposed for other projects in the Sarasota Bay area.

within the next month he would present the issue to the city commission on behalf of the ScenicWAVES group.

Meanwhile, McClellan said, the SBEP awarded a $7,000 grant for a project on the Palma Sola Scenic Highway on Manatee Avenue between the island and the mainland but the money cannot be used due to a study underway by Manatee County.

The Sept. 7 meeting at city hall focused on a mix of old and new business.

The committee also requested the input of Mayor John Chappie on possibly renaming City Park, which sits across the street from city hall, 107 Gulf Drive N.

But signage has been down along the route and committee members agreed the issue should be turned over to the city commission for resolution.

The Bradenton Beach ScenicWAVES committee picked up this month where it left off in May.

• $426,000 for 2023 for environmental/preliminary engineering consultation linked to the replacement of the Anna Maria Island drawbridge;

spans the Intracoastal Waterway, connecting Bradenton Beach on the island to Cortez on the mainland.

Other line items in the five-year plan that could impact the island include:

On Aug. 5, a federal magistrate judge ruled against four complainants challenging the DOT’s decision to replace the bascule bridge with a megabridge.

Other project costs — budgeted for 2023 — include $100,000 for engineering consultation and $1,513,801 for right-of-way land acquisition.

The high bridge’s price has steepened.

The Cortez drawbridge, built in the late 1950s and opened to traffic in 1957,

The group filed an appeal Sept. 8.

The complainants advocate the construction of a mid-level drawbridge — estimated in 2017 by the DOT to cost $104,267,500 over its 75-year lifespan.

The Florida Department of Transportation made public its 2023-27 fiveyear work program in August.

Construction is slated for 2026, when the agency also plans to spend $895,200 on the preliminary engineering consultation and $8,200,368 on a construction inspection consultation related to the initiative.

The coalition maintains the high bridge’s eastern inland retaining walls — 20-feet at their peak — would divide Cortez along Cortez Road.

The hatchling was about 200 yards from the beach. Whether it crawled to Highland Avenue or was dropped by a bird in flight remains a mystery.

Volunteers hope there are less reports of disorientations and more successes from remaining nests, which could hatch by the end of the month, bringing a new season for the volunteers: fundraising season.

Winding down

Sea turtle season also is nearing its end, with 102 nests left to hatch as of Sept. 10.

The hatchling count through Sept. 10 was 34,884. So with 102 nests left at an average of 79 hatchlings per nest in 2022, breaking the record is possible.

AMITW, in the past, has raised money at the Anna Maria Farmers Market and the volunteers hope to do so again in 2022-23.

Volunteers remain focused on the unhatched nests and speculate on the possibility of breaking the high hatchling number from 2018 — 35,788.
