The Facade acts as a climatical barrier allowing diffused sunlight through its triangular punctures and also allowing wind flow. The building facade shamelessly derives its functions from the concept of traditional Indian jaali and embracing it into the skin of the building. The outer skin of the building breaks the aura of noise caused due to heavy movement of vehicular activity and behaves like a large scale noise shutter. 350

Constructed phase

The concept of the courtyard in the center was questioned , and it was pushed to the periphery creating a permeable buffer between the building and the context. A perforated ferro-cement screen wraps around the verdant landscape, creating a sense of disconnect from the bustling street below.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROJECT The educational sector is undergoing a rapid transformation and adopting multi-pronged approach to education. More and more universities are proposing to setup inter disciplinary institutes.Moreover as a building typology the college campus is undergoing major organ transplants. New means of education are upgrading the three systems of informational exchange - Video, Voice, Data. This thesis addresses this phenomenon of change of the education institute both in terms of the education program and the building program. Development is the single preoccupation of all civilisations after survival. It is on an insightful level that the needs of specialised further education can be addressed. This school is a project deals with intellectual resources and canalising it towards the development of the community. It is a lateral method of injecting creative fluids into the society. The school becomes a tangible icon of this wave of change that is sweeping the society. Architecturally, it shall stand for all the ideologies that are of core importance of this organisation. ARCHITECTURAL CHALLENGES Recognising the magnitude of incorporation of technology into the education institute that will take place in the future generation and provide space for it. Addressing issues of flexibility and adaptability and creating an environment that is pliable but not anonymous. Evolving an architectural vocabulary for departments like interactivity and wellness that are both contemporary origin but diametrically opposite in their approach while solving all the prevalent issues of campus designs. Site Study - Tiruchirappalli

Why Tiruchirappalli ? Tiruchirappalli has been recognised in India as an important educational centre since the time of British rule. St. Joseph's College, which opened in Nagapattinam in 1846 and transferred to Tiruchirappalli in 1883, is one of the oldest educational institutions in South India. As of 2013, Tiruchirappalli has 45 arts and science colleges, 40 polytechnic colleges and 13 colleges that offer management education. The St. Joseph's College, National College,Bishop Heber College,Jamal Mohamed College and the Government Law College are prominent colleges providing higher education in the arts and sciences. There are approximately 35 engineering colleges in and around the city. The National Institutes of Technology, established by the government in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College, has a campus at Thuvakudi on the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli.

Culture A resident of Tiruchirappalli is generally referred to as a Tiruchiite. Situated at the edge of the Kaveri Delta, the culture of Tiruchirappalli is predominantly Brahminical, prevalent elsewhere in the delta. With a substantial population of students and migrant industrial workers from different parts of India, Tiruchirappalli has a more cosmopolitan outlook than the surrounding countryside. The main festival celebrated in Tiruchirappalli is Pongal, a regional harvest festival celebrated during January. As part of the Pongal celebrations, Jallikattu, a bull-taming village sport played on the last day of the festival, is occasionally held on the outskirts of the city. Aadi Perukku, Samayapuram flower festival, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Srirangam car festival, and the Teppakulam float festival are some of the prominent festivals that are held locally. Bakrid and Eid al-Fitr are also widely celebrated, owing to the substantial number of Muslims in the city. Nationwide festivals such as the Gregorian New Year, Christmas, Deepavali and Holi are also celebrated in Tiruchirappalli.


Tiruchirappalli Tiruchirappalli , also called Tiruchi or Trichy, is a major tier II city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Tiruchirappalli District. It is the fourth largest municipal corporation and the fourth largest urban agglomeration in the state. Located 322 kilometres south of Chennai and 379 kilometres north of Kanyakumari, Tiruchirappalli sits almost at the geographic centre of the state. The Kaveri Delta begins 16 kilometres west of the city where the Kaveri river splits into two, forming the island of Srirangam, which is now incorporated into the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation. Occupying 167.23 square kilometres, the city was home to 916,857 people in 2011.

ELEVATION E1 - 1861 HOUSE Historic integrity enables a property to illustrate significant aspects of its past. The authenticity of historic identity, and the survival of physical characteristics, thus providing evidence to the property’s historic importance interested us in the documentation and detailed study of the Lakshmi Vilas. This property not only resembled the historic appearance but it also retained physical materials, design features and aspects of construction dating from 1861. A building, that once functioned as a marriage hall, was later converted into a residential unit during the time of temple properties being rented for revenue and income. The Lakshmi vilas is one of the best preserved examples of Triplicane’s heritage. The property now has 5 divisions housing 5 families. The spatial planning of the house follows a linear pattern with rooms arranged one after the other. The house is 38.2m long and 6.3m wide. A passage which starts at the street face, runs through the house ending at the backyard. The linear stretch has alternating spaces of open and closed areas serving as gathering places or courtyards. The openings on the ceilings in the common area helps with light and cross ventilation. The house has a verandah at the entrance for social activities, and a platform, slightly raised from the street, which runs the entire length of the row house. It also acts as a transition from the street to the dwelling. The first courtyard houses a fleet of stairs that take you to the first floor of the building. The ground floor is rented out to 3 tenants and the first floor accommodates 2 more. All houses share a common passage for entry and exit. On reaching the first floor, a fleet of 4 narrow steps take you to the terrace. On the terrace, you find 2 chimneys opening out and many cut outs on the floor for natural light. The terrace is a vast space that divides to 3 levels (rising towards the main entrance of the building) has multiple rooms (now in bad state).
