Welcome

The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) has now completed a second successful full season under the ownership of Arena Racecourse Company (ARC), safe in the knowledge that going forward, we have the support of the largest racecourse group in the UK

Our biggest challenge in 2024, as it remains going into 2025, was the number of domestic horses registered with ARO We gave free registrations this season to encourage those that had been unsure of ARO’s future the confidence to commit to an intention to run, which did result in a slight increase in numbers Though there were a few understandable exceptions, through injuries or changes in circumstance, the majority of horses registered did race. We were delighted to welcome back domestic owners from the past, or from overseas such as leading international owner-breeder Dr Mohammad Al Nujaifi of Al Nujaifi Racing We also welcomed the arrival of new international owners, Al Asayl Bloodstock and Cre Run Farm, as well as the UK former thoroughbred concern, Okewood Bloodstock Also encouraging were the thoroughbred trainers debuting Arabians, notably Classic winning trainer Hugo Palmer, along with Tim Vaughan in partnership with ARO graduate Mitch Hunt, and in the last race of the season, Barry Brennan winning with his first runner for the Plumbs

Thanks to the support of ARC and our sponsors we were able to increase the number of races run this season from 2023, with 20 domestic races and three international PA Group races We were also able to increase prize money, with a minimum race value of £4,000, and a number of races receiving added prize money to the value of £6,000 We also staged two valuable handicaps worth £15,000 and £10,000 for horses rated 0-70 and 0-75 thereby rewarding the grass roots competitors. It was extremely pleasing to see Sheila Collington’s homebred Izenterisky secure the Wathba Stallions Cup race at Chester, a notable training feat by her husband Phil, the horse having been absent from racing for several years. Izenterisky is just one of many British bred runners to win this season, Coljani, the leading horse, has repaid his connections patience handsomely and turned out 8 times, as did Delicatesse Whilst Paramer Angel, Sassy and Victoria raced on six occasions, all are British bred, and all earned connections at least £6,000 in total prize money

One of the benefits our association with ARC has been the tv coverage of all our races via Sky Sports Racing (with Goodwood on Racing TV and ITV), which has increased the awareness of our sport both in the UK and further afield, and is vital for those owners who are unable to make it to the track. This has also meant that betting opportunities have increased, which helps to raise our sport’s profile The number of young horses registered, and the quality of the horses was also noteworthy as it so important to present a positive image of our sport which will be new to many viewers

As we look ahead to the 2025 season, the emphasis must be on rebuilding our foundations by increasing the domestic horse population We look forward to seeing debutants from

our existing domestic owner-breeder base such as those from Paul Simmons and James Owen, however we encourage everyone to consider spreading their gaze overseas for their next racehorse There are now many more opportunities to buy outside of the annual Arqana PA Sale in the autumn, with the online sales organised by Auctav turning up some useful runners at not extortionate prices The winner of the €100,000 2024 Group 1PA Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches, HM Al Zalma was sold by Auctav in their summer sale for €26,000, which when viewed in the light of the recent record-breaking prices at the thoroughbred yearling sales, makes her a bargain However, those with less deep pockets could have bought Zizania Du Mazet, winner of the £10,000 ARO Series Finale Handicap for €3,000 at the Osarus Breeze-Up Sale in the spring We actively encourage anyone who is looking for a horse to run in 2025 or who has a horse for sale or lease, to contact myself or Willie McFarland in the ARO Office

It is important to remember that the sooner horses are registered, the easier it is to formulate the race plan, and that as numbers increase, now that we are part of ARC, owners of 16 racecourses across Britain, we can also increase the number of races scheduled ARO now has the opportunity to put on more races in response to registrations Over the winter months we are actively seeking to encourage overseas owners to consider sending some of their horses to the UK to race, as it is vital to accommodate all grades of horse to maintain our international calendar It is far better for overseas owned horses to be trained here, rather than shipping in for one race, as it benefits both our racing and the British equine economy in general

We thank all those who sponsored with ARO in 2024 and are extremely grateful for the generous support that our long-term supporters provide Whilst we will continue to seek sponsorship opportunities from overseas, with the backbone of our support coming from the Middle East, we are also welcoming enquiries from smaller UK based operations who may be keen to raise their own profiles, particularly now that we have televised coverage Please contact us for further details as we expand our associate sponsorship packages

It should be noted that every single owner whose horse came under starters orders with ARO in 2024 went home with prize money, with a total of £93,479 being paid to UK domiciled owners, and the average earnings for a domestic owned horse being £5,842 With the provisional fixture list already in place (subject to BHA approval) and published on-line, registrations are now open There has never been a better time to be involved in Arabian racing in the UK. We look forward to racing with you in 2025

Leading Trainer

James Owen

James Owen has secured his sixth ARO leading trainer title this season, his first without the backing of a big patron He started the season with just three horses, his homebred fillies Victoria and Delicatesse, along with Upstart Crow owned by his Arabian Assistant Lissie Reeves’ and her mother Linda.

Upstart Crow put him at the top of the table with his first runner, and though last year’s winner and near neighbour Phil Collington briefly deposed him, he was soon back on top Throughout the course of this season he gained two fillies from Al Nujaifi Racing, the first to be trained in the UK for seven years, both won, and went on to give him representation in all the UK PA Group races this term. He also gained two threeyear-old French bred fillies from a former UK thoroughbred concern, Okewood Bloodstock, both are now winners, who could head to the UAE President Cup – UK Arabian Derby next year Finally, he also gained two horses from America’s Cre Run Farm, Winds Of Fortune and multiple million-dollar winner, First Classs, who had summered in the UK in preparation for a return to leading trainer Doug Watson in the Gulf this winter

Winds Of Fortune won well at Chepstow, whilst First Classs gave Owen and his team their first taste of competing in the Qatar Arabian World Cup in Paris This has put First Classs on the road to the 8 AED million HH The President Cup run in

Abu Dhabi in December.

“It’s great to be leading trainer again as I learnt my trade with the Arabians and it’s nice that I’ve been getting sent some better horses again since the Shadwell days, that I can compete with at the higher levels They’ve run well all year Going to the Arc was a great experience, though it was shame we couldn’t get a prep run in, First Classs came in a bit too late to us, but I thought he ran very well and we all had a great experience over there.”

Leading Jockey

A newcomer to Arabian racing last season, Tegan Padgett, 19, had joined James Owen in Newmarket seeking a change of scene after two years in the West Country She struck up a great partnership with the Reeves’s Upstart Crow last year which saw her claim the leading jockey title and Upstart Crow leading horse That form continued on their return in April when together they won the opening race of the season at Windsor. In two further rides they were runner-up at Doncaster, and third on Upstart Crow’s final start of the season at Chepstow.

Padgett gained further success on Owen’s homebred fillies’, winning on Victoria at Bath and Southwell, as well as Delicatesse at Lingfield Park Owen supports his staff well and no other jockey had more rides on Arabians this year, with Padgett making the frame a further six times from a total of 14 rides Her nearest challengers in terms of rides were former ARO leading novice (2016) and ARO leading professional jockey (2019) Charlie Price with 12, and former amateur turned conditional jockey Lewis Saunders on 10. Saunders

also gained his first Arabian career winner on Al-Hatab at Bath, when beating Victoria and Padgett by a length.

Padgett gets plenty of practice at home on Arabians and is grateful for the help that Owen has provided in mentoring her riding She joins Alex Chadwick (2019, 2020) and Joanna Mason (2016, 2017, 2018) as a multiple ARO champion riding from his yard, along with single winners Antonia Peck (2019) and Hayley Lewis (2019) Chadwick has gone on to be the Amateur Jockeys Association gentleman’s champion over fences last winter, whilst Owen’s apprentice Sean Dylan Bowen won the Flat apprentice jockey’s championship this summer.

“I think my season highlight was riding Victoria It was really nice to ride a filly that we broke in here last year and it’s nice to see her progress I’m considering getting my apprentice licence out next year, I just need to get the winter out of the way first ”

Leading Breeder

Peter Hammersley & the Raffles Partnership

This year’s title rewards a story that was over ten years in the making when established owners Colin and Trevor Banks invited their friend Micheal Flack to watch their horse Forgehill Cosaque, trained by Peter Hammerlsey, run at the Curragh Flack wanted to get back involved in racing, having previously been involved with thoroughbreds, and it was suggested that they join together and breed their own instead of buying one. They won a cover to Our Machine in the Association Française du Cheval Arabe de Course (AFAC) raffle in Toulouse, which led to the new team calling themselves the Raffles Partnership Using the cover on the Banks’ previous racemare, Estival, the resulting produce, Our Dream went into training with Hammersley Unfortunately she sustained a career ending injury after two runs and once proven sound, at Hammersley’s suggestion, she was covered by Madjani.

Sadly Colin passed away before the foal was born, and Hammersley stepped in as co-owner and breeder, raising the foal and later breaking him in Trevor named the now gelded offspring as Coljani, in memory of his late brother

This season Coljani has gone from strength to strength, rewarding his connections patience, with not only the leading breeder title, but that of leading horse as well.

“Coljani is versatile as to trip, every jockey that gets off him loves him, he’s so tough and honest He has got a little bit about him You need luck to go with you and not against you in this business, but we’d hope there’s more to come next year ”

“It’s been great, this project started 11 years ago when Trev invited me to Ireland to watch Forgehill Cosaque and then we bred Our Dream To be having the success that we’ve had, it means a lot We missed out with Our Dream unfortunately, but we made it with Coljani ”

Arabian Racing Achievement Award

Recording a second win in this category last year, it was Owen’s intention to mentor staff member and co-owner of his leading Arabian of 2023, Lissie Reeves, to take over that side of his flourishing dual purpose yard this year Starting the 2024 UK Arabian season with just three horses, Upstart Crow owned by Reeves and her mother, along with two homebred fillies, Vicotira and Delicatesse, Owen was way short of the numbers that had previously seen him win five ARO trainer titles, when the sport was exclusively for amateurs

However by mid-season, he had gained a further six Arabians, two for owner-breeder Dr Mohammad Al Nujaifi, two for Okewood Bloodstock and two for Cre Run Farm Five out of the six won, and combined with the success his own homebreds, Owen gained a sixth ARO trainers title, a first ARO owners title and a second ARO jockeys title for one of his stable amateurs, Teagan Padgett

All this taking place alongside the under rules success of his thoroughbreds such as the likes of Burdett Road, Wimbledon Hawkeye, East India Dock, in addition to that of stable apprentice champion Sean Dylan Bowen and gentleman’s champion amateur Alex Chadwick, himself a former two-time leading ARO jockey.

The award was presented as part of the Horserace Writers’ and Photographers’ Association (HWPA) 58th Annual Derby Awards Lunch on Monday 2 December, at the Royal Lancaster, London

Now in its’ eleventh year, the award, once again generously sponsored by Equine MediRecord, recognises an individual or organisation for their contribution to UK Arabian racing

“I’m delighted to win this award again I'm so pleased to still be involved in Arabian racing as I learnt my trade with them, and to be leading trainer for a sixth time, as well as enjoying success with my thoroughbreds on the Flat and jumping means a lot ”
