When the 2022 Arabian Racing Organisation season started, the one certainty was that there would be a new leading owner After over 30 years of support, both financial and through racing stock, we knew there would be no direct input from the Maktoum family into the day to day running of UK Arabian racing. Whilst sponsorship had already been greatly reduced over the last three years, with the last Dubai International Arabian Race day occurring in 2019, it has been most keenly felt in the reduction of our horse population

In the light of this, we are extremely grateful that Shadwell were able to offer UK breeders a selection of stallions at the bargain fee of £100 A fitting final legacy to our late Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, was their agreement to support our reinstated breeders’ scheme with nominations to our top three breeders with runners this season In addition, Shadwell had already offered a number of fillies in training for lease, who continued to race this season, along with the opportunity to purchase horses at the various dispersal sales that took place. We are delighted for their new connections who enjoyed success with them in the UK in 2022

The leading investor in Shadwell stock was HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Saud’s Athbah Racing, who has had horses with a variety of UK trainers for more than ten years Philip Collington has been Athbah’s principal trainer since 2018 and together they have shared many Group race victories in the UK, the rest of Europe and in the Gulf. This year that combination has proved eminently successful with a first Leading Owner title for Athbah Racing a second Leading Trainer title for Philip Collington, as well as Ekleel Athbah being leading horse and Tadhg O’Shea becoming leading jockey We congratulate the whole team on their success

We thank the Royal Cavalry of Oman for supporting a new leading owner trophy this season, along with their race sponsorship and for joining with us to plant a tree in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Jubilee We also thank our other award sponsors, Racing Welfare, The Arabian Racehorse magazine and Equine MediRecord We thank Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club for their sponsorship of our most valuable race, the Qatar International Stakes, which year after year brings together the very best Arabians to compete and undoubtedly showcases our sport to the wider racing public We are also very grateful for the grassroots support we have had this year which continues to come from the Emirates Breeders, Rossdales Veterinary Surgeons and in particular the Sheikh Mansoor Festival, who increased their Wathba Stallions Cup series sponsorship by five races, a welcome boost for our smaller owners

In that category it has been encouraging to see wins for new owners, such as Gary Allsopp, and for returning owners such as John Elliott, Mrs Skepper and her daughter Jane Marson The dual success of Steve Blackwell’s Aloof, a product of a free covering awarded to his mare Spirited Game at the end of the 2014 season, is another reason to be thankful for the return of our breeders incentives The overall winning breeder was Paul Simmons of Zayin Arabians who continues to invest in his bloodlines and who has been a stalwart of Arabian racing Just outside the top three was James Owen, with the first produce from his original Racing Club mare We hope his Racing Club’s continued success with their horses may encourage others to set up syndicates in order to share the costs and the highs and lows of racing

These highs and lows affect us all, as even with the welcome support of all our sponsors, the decline of our domestic horse population continues

to be a major concern. Added to this, are the current economic pressures which are impacting all businesses across the UK, with everything from horse feed to travel costs all rapidly increasing We are also struggling to overcome the impact of Brexit raising the costs associated with overseas competition, which has had a detrimental effect on our international Group races and the temporary summer population of Gulf owned horses based in the UK

With fewer than 100 horses registered, ARO’s own administration costs are failing to be covered, along with those fees incurred from the racecourses and the British Horseracing Authority which enable us to provide the first class platform for our racing that our sponsors and participants expect. We need Arabian racing to progress further with its integration into the British horseracing industry to sustain its future This means our races need to be fully incorporated into British Horseracing Authority race planning as part of their new Racing Digital portal and we also need assistance from the Horserace Betting and Levy Board to assist by including Arabian racing into the prizemoney allocation

However, with the odds increasingly stacked against us, we continue to rise to these challenges to provide competitive racing at all levels in 2022 With 52 domestic horses registered this season, our field sizes have averaged 6 7 runners (across 22 races), and the number of individual owners has increased on last year. Our overall prize money has increased, and we have improved financial bonuses for our stable staff through the sponsorship of the Best Turned Out Awards by Racing Welfare and Baker McVeigh International

ARO is also a world leader in improving the sports’ integrity, as one of the first racing authorities to adopt Equine MediRecord’s innovative platform for horse welfare and medication compliance We have also had our first licensed UK thoroughbred trainer include Arabians in their string, and with enquiries from others, we know that this is a workable proposition moving forward

Thanks to improved Satellite TV and on course coverage with more interviews and commentary on our races, we have reached more people and gained greater crowd engagement, with the knock on effect of increasing betting turn over in all areas both on and off course and online

We continue to maintain a brilliant working relationship with our sponsors from the Middle East, who remain committed to their support of UK Arabian racing We have also established great partnerships with our UK racecourses who enable us to hold races of all levels, and who provide a warm welcome for our international runners, year after year

ARO has been tested again and again over the last three years and it is clear that in the short term, some of these challenges will continue to pose a threat to our racing This year we also sadly lost one of the world’s greatest horse lovers in Her Majesty The Queen, but just like the Royal family we must regroup and find a path forward We are actively seeking to forge new connections and strengthen our existing relationships in order to build on the platform that we now have, to ensure a future for UK Arabian racing

Welcome ARO 2022 4

Leading Owner

Athbah Racing

Reflecting their increased commitment to the UK, Athbah Racing is the new leading owner, with their trainer Phil Collington accepting the new trophy, sponsored by the Royal Cavalry of Oman, on their behalf Their principal winner, the Leading Horse, Ekleel Athbah, ended her UK season on a high when winning the Royal Cavalry of Oman International Stakes (Group 2PA) at Newbury in August Bayan Athbah secured back to back wins in the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Cup (Gr3PA) at Haydock Park, Rebal Athbah remains unbeaten, whilst Kafou Athbah continues his career in Saudi Arabia this winter

Leading Trainer

Philip Collington

Philip Collington, who won his first leading trainer title in 2018, had a long association with Shadwell Arabians as a jockey and trainer Along with half of Sheikh Hamdan’s string, he also inherited a handful of Athbah horses on the retirement of his mentor and doyenne of the sport, Gill Duffield in 2015 However this year’s success was not entirely down to Athbah’s support as one of his winners was Lujain, bred by Shadwell Arabians and now owned by John Elliott, who had provided Collington with his first winner as a trainer, as well as supporting him in his riding days

His team was off the mark quickly in the UK with Rebal Athbah winning the first race of the season at Windsor Despite a spirited challenge by five time leading trainer James Owen, who had more runners, the trophy was going back to Collington, who was also the only UK trainer to secure black type wins in the UK this season

“It’s been a fantastic season and obviously it’s nice to be leading trainer again, along with the Group success we’ve had as well Of course with the quality of horses we have now, we should be producing Group winners and winners across all levels We’ve got some lovely young horses going into next year and they look very progressive ”

Tadhg O'Shea

Integral to the success of Athbah Racing was ten times UAE Champion Jockey Tadhg O’Shea, who partnered Ekleel Athbah and Bayan Athbah to their 2022 UK PA Group victories He will be presented with the ARO leading jockey trophy later this year at the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival Jewel Crown meeting, a race which Athbah and Collington also won in 2019 with Mashhur Al Khalediah

“It’s an honour to be crowned leading rider in the UK. Arabians are how it all started for me, winning on Danidor for the Maktoum Royal Family in 2001 at Jebel Ali Thankfully I’ve ridden some of the best Arabians throughout my career and it’s been great to ride for Phil and Athbah Racing again in the UK this year. I congratulate them on their success and that of Ekleel Athbah, she’s a lovely filly who is improving with every run, hopefully she’ll go to the Al Mneefah Cup ”

Athbah Racing also received the ARO Leading Horse Award, sponsored by The Arabian Racehorse magazine, for Ekleel Athbah Owned and bred by Athbah Racing and trained by Philip Collington, Ekleel Athbah is out of Manade Athbah, who was bred in the UK by Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, but trained in France by Sandrine Tarrou There she won over 2250m and was later placed third in the 2014 Hatta International Stakes at DIAR

Ekleel Athbah made her debut in Belgium in February placing second over 2100m and finished second on her UK debut at Wolverhampton, when beaten a neck by Balqees Since dropping back in trip and switching to turf she has been unbeaten in the UK,

winning over a mile at Windsor and then two two six furlong sprints at Newbury, including the Royal Cavalry of Oman International Stakes (Gr2PA).

“We felt from the beginning of the year that she could be as good, if not better than Bayan Athbah It was only her race inexperience that held her up. She’s very professional at home and she was unlucky not to get off the mark sooner, but she’s ended the season as a Group winner She’s had a bit of a break as we’ve moved yards, but she’ll have a prep race either in France or Belgium in January with the goal of going to the Al Mneefah Cup at the Saudi Cup meeting.”

LAITH AL KHALEDIAH (2009 h Tiwaiq x El Biwaibiya)

Bred by Saudi Arabia’s Al Khalediah Stud, Laith Al Khalediah was represented in 2022 by the unbeaten Rebal Athbah, as well as the leading horse, Ekleel Athbah. Overseas his most notable produce is Mubasher Al Khalediah, winner of the 2021 Obaiya Arabian Classic (1m2f) and two Prince Sultan Cups (Gr1PA) in Saudi

“Having seen some of the other horses by Laith that have been bred and are still owned by Al Khalediah Stud in Saudi Arabia, they are very tenacious, stay very well and really see out the line well Rebal certainly is like that and Ekleel’s very tough too, we’re hoping she will win back up in trip next year ”

Arabian Racing Achievement Award

PHILIP COLLINGTON

Having a solid family background of hunting and point to pointing, it’s somewhat surprising that five time Arabian Racing Organisation leading jockey Philip Collington, didn’t start riding until his mid teens Getting the racing bug whilst at agricultural college, he’s not looked back, riding his first winner as an amateur on the Flat in 2001, as well as a handful over hurdles before focussing his efforts on Arabians.

His first ride in HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s colours was a winning one in 2003, as was his second, and his third, which led to him spending the winter riding work in Dubai with His Highness’s Arabian trainer Gill Duffield On his return, he accepted the position of retained amateur to Sheikh Hamdan, riding many of his best Arabians, such as Kaolino and No Risk Al Maury at home and on the track. Then having become Duffield’s assistant, on her retirement in 2015, he inherited half her string

As a trainer, his focus has always been on quality over quantity He hi the ground running with three black type wins for his chief patron, who was present to watch Dane O’Neill to steer the fragile Radames to Group 1PA victory on Dubai Day at Newbury Jamaayil had already won the opener and would later provide Collington with a first overseas PA Group win in Toulouse Though the majority of his winners were for Sheikh Hamdan, also in his stable were horses from HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed’s Athbah Racing, who supplied another top level winner the following year in Mith’hath Athbah

2018 was his best UK season numerically to date, producing 24 winners and 28 placed horses from 83 runners, securing his first ARO trainers title With more black type success for Athbah Racing, it was clear they were becoming a potent force in the sport and Collington was now regularly travelling and winning with their horses in Europe and the Gulf The most notable of which was Mashhur Al Khalediah, winner of the $1millon dollar Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi, before finishing third in the Obaiya Arabian Classic at the inaugural Saudi Cup meeting in 2020

The horses that earned them the 2022 UK Arabian leading trainer and owner titles were all Athbah homebreds, who also helped UAE champion Tadhg O’Shea to capture the ARO top jockey award However Collington hasn’t forgotten his roots, still training for small owner breeders such as John Elliott who supplied him with rides and his first winner as a trainer He has also given a start to young jockeys, most notably Royal Ascot winning apprentice Laura Pearson, who joined him whilst still at school

Athbah Racing were one of the leading buyers from Shadwell’s Arabian dispersal and being broken in for next season are the first foals from Collington’s first Group winners for Sheikh Hamdan Newmarket based, he has just relocated to Hamilton Road, a few yards up from where he started with Duffield at Eve Lodge, and he’s hoping to further retrace his steps with success for Athbah in the Gulf this winter

"It is an honour to receive this award, sponsored by ARO and Equine MediRecord, which has previously been won by HH Sheikh Hamdan on two occasions, as well as Gill Duffield, both of whom played such a big part in my early career. I am grateful to all the staff, owners, jockeys and horses who have been part of my achievements and to Athbah Racing who have supported me so well this season "

Philip Collington

The award will be presented as part of the Horserace Writers’ and Photographers’ Association (HWPA) 56th Annual Derby Awards on Monday 5 December, at the Royal Lancaster, London Now in its’ ninth year, the award, once again generously sponsored by Equine MediRecord, recognises an individual or organisation for their contribution to UK Arabian racing
