NEWS ARABIAN RACING SUPPORTING CAREER PROGRESSION The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) congratulates Peter Sporne on his appointment as a Stipendiary Steward for the British Horseracing Authority as of 1 March 2016. He had only recently been appointed as a BHA Steward’s Secretary, having previously served as a BHA Steward. Sporne has been acting as a Stipendiary Steward for ARO since 2012 on a number of Arabian racedays, including ARO’s flagship meeting, Dubai International Arabian Races at Newbury, a full fixture of eight races including five International races, of which three are Group 1 PA contests.

ARO Director Genny Haynes welcomed the news saying. “Obviously we are delighted for Peter on his new appointment as BHA Stipendiary Steward. This is yet another example of how Arabian Racing can benefit the wider racing industry by giving opportunities for education and career progression in all areas, not just riding and training horses. ARO wishes Peter every success.”

HH SHEIKHA FATIMA LADIES SERIES RIDERS ALYSON DENIEL AND JOANNA MASON HONOURED IN LONDON Three British lady amateur riders who have competed in the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship were shortlisted in the annual Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards. Alyson Deniel and Becky Smith, in the Rider/Groom category, whilst Joanna Mason was nominated in the Retraining of Racehorses (ROR) Special Recognition category. In a fabulous gala evening ceremony held at the Jumeriah Carlton Hotel in London last month, Deniel and Mason were delighted to be presented with their respective awards. First held in 2005, the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards aim to celebrate those working in racing. In partnership with the Racing Post and with the generous sponsorship of Godolphin, the awards are organised by British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and offer prize money of over £120,000 - with up to £40,000 available to a single yard or stud. The Rider/Groom Award is for those who have shown talent for horsemanship, consistency and reliability in and out of the saddle and/ or have achieved something outstanding in 2015 season either in an equine or personal capacity. The Retraining of Racehorses Charity Award recognises a member of stable staff who has successfully retrained a former racehorse. Speaking afterwards Deniel said, “The

Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards -how do I put my feelings into words!? The whole experience of day in London was fabulous. We had our last interview at the British Horseracing Authority offices on Monday morning, which was nerve wracking! I was lucky enough to have Mark Bradburne and Dale Gibson interviewing me, every category had different people. Afterwards we had the special experience of being taken to the Houses of Parliament for lunch! Wow! “We returned to our hotel, the Jumeriah Carlton - how spoilt were we! The reception was at 6pm for the Awards, and finished around 12, but the hours in between were amazing! I was lucky enough to be joined by my mum and dad from France which made it all the more special. "I thought I was in a very strong category Rider /Groom along with Rebecca Smith and Christopher Ely. I was ecstatic when I was announced the winner. It still hasn't really sunk in that I won such an innovative award. People say to me that it's much deserved, I say maybe, but there are many other people that are doing the same as me, I'm a lucky person to have been nominated and such an award is for ALL the staff that work hard all day every day. “I love what I do and have had the opportunity to meet and work with some wonderful people and horses.

'Racing isn't an easy life, it is hard and frustrating at times, but that pales into insignificance when you have the experience of looking after good horses, having great winners and being around some of the best people in the world - the wonderful world of racing!” Mason had broken her back in a pointto-point fall just over a year ago and had made incredible progress to return to race riding aided by her retrained racehorse Liverpool. Mason went on to ride in Houston, Texas, in February, finishing a close second. Deniel finished sixth in the opening HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies race in Oman, however she had previously won a leg of the series in Australia, and rode in the finals in Abu Dhabi in 2014. She was full of enthusiasm for the opportunities the series had offered her saying. “Wow! What a fantastic series of International races. It brings the best amateur and apprentices from around the world to compete on level terms. It gives you the chance to go to places that some of us can only dream of. Competing in Australia, Oman and Abu Dhabi are some of the best highlights of my career so far.

“We, as competitors, want for nothing whilst we are away - wonderful hotels, food and hospitality. Lara Sawaya does an exceptional job of at organising everything. I’ve been very lucky to have been invited to represent Great Britain and would love to continue to do so. Our Jockey Co-ordinator, Sarah Oliver, is so important to the Festival and works extremely hard. She continued. “Riding Arabians are very different from riding Thoroughbreds, they are smaller, sharper in their movement. They are great fun and extremely tough with an amazing recovery rate. “Even though I didn’t win this time, the trip to Muscat, Oman was great. The racetrack and surface at Al Rahba racecourse was very different to what I am used to at home. I thoroughly enjoy riding in the series which as well as giving me the opportunity to experience racing in other countries, gives me the chance to make new friends and we can share our experiences and knowledge.” www.godolphin.com www.britishhorseracing.com www.racingpost.com www.sheikhmansoorfestival.com

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN RACES TO KICK OFF 2016 SEASON IN AUSTRALIA South Australian Jockey Club (SAJC) Chief Executive Officer, Brenton Wilkinson, announced Morphettville Racecourse was chosen by the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) committee to host the first two DIAR races of 2016 at the 12th March race meet to complement Shadwell Stud Australasia’s sponsorship of a full card of Thoroughbred racing. “The family friendly event is a platform to promote the sport of Arabian horse racing in South Australia and showcase Middle Eastern culture, and it promises to be an exciting lead-up event to Adelaide’s premier racing event - the 2016 UBET Adelaide Cup on 14 March.” The two Arabian races, in association with the National Arabian Racehorse Association of Australia (NARA); will be staged as part of a full day of Thoroughbred racing sponsored by Shadwell Stud Australasia which is celebrating 30 years of success in Australia. The story started when AT TALAQ trained by Colin Hayes at Lindsay Park Stud in Angaston, won the 1986 Melbourne Cup. “The event is a great way to acknowledge the long-standing relationship between Shadwell and the Hayes family, both who have played such an important part of Thoroughbred racing in South Australia over the last 30 years,” Mr Wilkinson said. The Arabian horse races have been made possible through the support of the DIAR program whose patron is His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. HH Sheikh Hamdan is a member of the ruling family of Dubai, the United Arab Emirates Minister of

Finance and the Deputy Ruler of Dubai. He was one of the pioneers in bringing European bred Thoroughbreds to race successfully in the Southern Hemisphere, and is one of the most prominent and successful owners and breeders of Arabian racehorses in the world. “The Arabian horse racing industry is small but growing in Australia, with many drawn to the athleticism of the horses, as well as the excitement of the racing,” Mr Wilkinson said. “Arabian horses are generally smaller than Thoroughbreds, but can carry large weights and have gentle temperaments, opening the door for a broader range of people to get involved in the sport as jockeys.” Director of Shadwell Stud Australasia, Mark Kelly, reiterated the significance of Shadwell's support of the race day in South Australia and their connection with the DIAR program. “We are excited that the connection between Shadwell Stud Australasia and South Australia can be further developed through the sponsorship of a card of Thoroughbred racing in the lead up to the Adelaide Cup,” Mr Kelly said. “We have invested heavily in Thoroughbred racing and breeding in South Australia for 30 years and this is a great opportunity to commemorate our significant achievements during that time. “

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

7 All the Thoroughbred races on 12 March will be named after horses that have won Group One races in Australia in the famous nominated colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan. “It fits really nicely that HH Sheikh Hamdan is also the patron of DIAR and that this event provides the opportunity to educate more people about the Arabian breed, the sport of Arabian horse racing and the Arabic culture which underpins it.” Mr Wilkinson said an all-South Australian jockey line-up will feature in the Arabian races - the Shadwell Arabian Stallions Plate valued at $30,000 and the UAE Arabian Plate worth $20,000. The races will be called by Victoria Shaw, Australia’s only professional female race caller.

face painter and pony rides will provide entertainment for the younger members in the crowd.” In the lead-up to the March race meet Adelaide primary schools will be involved in an exciting community art project ‘The Arabian Rainbow Competition’. The competition allows students to paint a life-sized fibre glass sculpture of an Arabian horse. It is hoped the project will provide school children to learn more about the Arabic culture while nurturing their creative and artistic instincts. The finished sculptures will be display at Morpettville Racecourse on 12 March and will be judged by the committee of the DIAR, led by His Excellency Mirza Al Sayegh. The winning school will receive a cash prize of $3000, $2000 for second place and $1500 for third place.

Along with the Thoroughbred racing and two showcase Arabian races, other events on the day will include a ‘Cultural Marquee’ where race-goers will be given the opportunity to learn about the United Arab Emirates. “Race-goers can sample Middle Eastern food and drinks, and experience the art of henna tattoo – all for free,” Mr Wilkinson said. “A

Triple Kahayla Classic winner Madjani (FR)

FIRST GROUP 1 WINNER FOR MADJANI Shadwell Arabian Stallions’s triple Kahayla Classic winner MADJANI sired his first Group 1 winner on Thursday 3rd March at Meydan, in UAE. The Shadwell bred 6 year colt Handassa won the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr.1 PA) over 2000m for his debut on the dirt track of Meydan. He won by a comfortable margin of more than 8 lengths and beat the track record set by 2015 Kahayla Classic winner Manark, also a Shadwell horse. Handassa is trained by François Rohaut and was ridden on the day by Paul Hanagan.

Handassa was born in France, at Haras de Saint Faust. His dam, Ziva (by Dormane), was bought in 2001 after her victory in the International Arabian race La Coupe d’Al Asayl Management in France. Bred and trained by JeanMarc de Watrigant, she won 5 races, including the Hatta International Stakes (Gr.1 PA) at Newbury racecourse, also for Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Ziva has produced several winners, including the brothers Elraawy and Azizi (Monsieur Al Maury) and Taajer (Madjani), winner of the Prix Magicienne in February. Handassa is the first Stakes winning progeny out of this mare.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Handassa is from the first crop of his sire Madjani and became his first Stakes winner when he won the Shadwell Arabian Stallions (Listed PA) in Holland in 2015. He then finished 3rd in the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes (Gr.1 PA) at Newbury and travelled to Istanbul to win the International IFAHR Trophy (Gr.2 PA). Shadwell Stud’s director Richard Lancaster commented: “It was very exciting to see Handassa winning on Thursday. It is reminiscent of his sire Madjani who you all remember as the winner of 3 Kahayla Classics. We can now wait and see if Handassa follows the footsteps of his sire.”

remarkable sire Tidjani, Madjani is out of a Tunisian damline that produced the Group winners Al Jakbar, Bint Belady (ex Tornade Blanche), Essana, Tornador, Speed Tornade, Ouassila Thabet. Madjani is building a successful international profile with a growing number of Stakes winners and performers. RB Frynch Broad won the Cre Run Oaks Arabian Distaff Stakes (Gr.2) and the Texas Arabian Oaks Stakes (Gr.3) and is the 2015 leading 4yo filly in the USA. Bon Baiser De Faust, second in the Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr.1 PA) and third in the Shadwell Arabian Derby (Gr.1 PA), is the 2015 leading Arabian racehorse in the UK. Niraan, also out of a Dormane mare, is the 2015 leading Arabian racehorse in Sweden. Madjani has winners in the UK, USA, France, Sweden, Morocco, Oman and UAE. COME ARABIAN RACING FOR FREE THIS SEASON WITH ARO The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) is excited to announce that there will be no charge for entry to their stand alone fixtures for the 2016 season. The only exception being the Chelmsford City meeting on 1 July where Simply Red play after racing, a capacity crowd is expected as tickets are selling fast. Dubai International Arabian Races at Newbury, the flagship day of UK Arabian racing where the world’s leading Arabian racehorses contest three Group 1 PA events, has always been free to enter and this year will be run on Sunday 24 July. ARO Racing Manager Amanda Smith said “ARO is delighted to be offering free entry to the majority of their fixtures this season and we are sure that this will encourage a new audience for the sport, whilst rewarding the loyalty of its’ regular supporters. “For many years ARO has been an invaluable training ground to progress future stars of the thoroughbred world through their careers, such as Tom Scudamore and Tom Marquand, whilst providing further opportunities for leading amateurs such as Simon Walker. Last month our 2015 Champion Novice Jockey Will Pettis recorded back to back victories on the All Weather, whilst ARO Stipendiary Steward Peter Sporne,

was appointed to the same role for the British Horseracing Authority. “UK Arabian racing also provides competitive opportunities for the sports equine stars such as Manark , winner of the Kahayla Classic (opening race on Dubai World Cup night) and Djainka Des Forges, International Joint TopRated Arabian and winner of the Arabian World Cup (run after the Prix de l’Arc Triomphe) who are all multiple Group winners in International Arabian racing. Sadly his 2015 winner Manark will not run, however His Highness and Erwan Charpy will be represented by Versac PY who was second in 2013. The winners of Rounds 1 and 2, Thakif and Haajeb also line up, along with AF Tawaq, AF Lafeh and Nashmee, who were placed in the Challenge races. Overseas runners include the Qataris, Qassy and Rasi for Jassim Ghazali and TM Thunder Struck for Alban de Mieulle and a first Italian contender in Lares De Pine. British interest

revolves around Shadwell UK Derby winner Mahess Du Soleil, bred by Jim and Jo Kippen and owned by their daughter Lisa Demoynaz. Now trained by Arnaud Chaille-Chaille, this is his seasonal debut. Charpy spoke of his fondness for Versac saying. "Though I was delighted to win with my other horse [Manark last year], I was a bit concerned about my old boy. I am very pleased with his preparation this year, he finished a very good second on his comeback in the Al Maktoum Challenge, which was reassuring and he did a nice piece of work here the other morning. He's a real character, I have a lot of respect for horses who try hard for you, he rarely runs a bad race."

HH THE EMIR'S SWORD FESTIVAL Doha, Qatar

A delighted Richie Mullen celebrates his win on Gazwan

The HH Emir’s Sword Festival is the highlight of the Qatar racing calendar and is held under the patronage of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani. The Festival hosts 22 races for Purebred Arabians and Thoroughbreds, some for local breds only, and is traditionally held over three days at the end of February. There are two Group 1 races for Purebred Arabians including the prestigious HH Emir’s Sword, which now forms the final leg of the newly

instigated Doha Triple Crown, which unites three Group 1 PA contests across three countries. With the first leg going to Sir Bani Yas in the Qatar International at Goodwood and the second to Al Mourtajez in Longchamp’s Qatar Arabian World Cup, there was no chance of the $1 million bonus being won. The spectacle of the world’s highest ever rated Arabian racehorse, Al Mourtajez (OR 130) bidding for back to back wins was an attractive proposition nonetheless.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

23

The feature Arabian race on the first day of the Festival was the Qatar Local Purebred Arabian Trophy over 2000m with a prize fund of $150,000. Majeed (above), a six year old by Amer out of a Djebbel mare, was a winner of the HH Emir’s Trophy over further at this meeting last year. He had then been third to Al Mourtajez in the Doha Cup (Prix Mangante) Gr1 PA in Deauville during a European campaign last summer. Fancied beforehand, he won by a length and was one of four

winners for Umm Qarn, making them the leading owners of the Festival. They also took the Purebred Arabian highlight on the Friday, the $100,000 Gulf Cup over 1600m with the Majd Al Arab mare, Muhjah (below). She had rattled up a hat-trick of wins at a lower level last year and had been third to stablemate Majeed in the Dukhan Cup at Christmas.

Aba'Ath (QA) impresses under Julien Auge

With the new race plan making Saturday the focus, the $250,000 Qatar International Cup Group 1 PA was the second race on the card. Won last year in impressive fashion by Mister Ginoux, this year it was another Fourcy, Al Shaqab runner that impressed when Aba’ath scorched home breaking the track record for a mile. By Amer, his dam was unraced, though she has an excellent pedigree out of a full sister to Djebbel and therefore a granddaughter of Cherifa. After the race Thomas Fourcy was full of praise for his colt saying. “He has been impressive. His turn of foot at the end of the race was very interesting. That’s why we decided to race him here, as he’s a horse that gives his best on firm ground. So this race, with this kind of racetrack, was a perfect target for him. “The horse was going better and

better in training. My method is that when they are in form, you have to race them. I am unbeaten here! 5 starts, 5 wins! I hope I will stay unbeaten today. The horse is tougher now, so following the pace of the race is easier than in the past for him. Coming from off the pace, then taking the advantage, gives him heart. Now he is strong enough to be at his ease at any pace, so at the finish, he can make the difference. “Now he will rest. We will prepare him for the Qatar Derby in Chantilly. I hope the weather will be good in June. He will now take the same path that Mister Ginoux did. This horse has reached a new level, Julien Augé told me that he is better than Mister Ginoux, so we will wait and see. Today he has beaten a few very good horses, I think he is a horse that can get better and better as he matures, like a lot of Amer sons.”

Last year's winner Al Mourtajez (FR) leaves the paddock

The headline race, the HH Emir’s Sword brought the Festival to a close and was every bit as exciting as you would expect for a million dollar contest.

Gazwan had clearly strengthened since his win in Newbury’s Group 1 PA Dubai International Stakes and his five length second to Al Mourtajez at Longchamp in October.

Fourcy’s wish to remain unbeaten was challenged from the outset by one of the three Al Shahania runners for Julian Smart, Al Majh’hoor, who kept closer to Al Mourtajez than he had last year. Though it was Al Majh’hoor’s stablemate and 2014 Emir’s Sword winner, Assy, who had posted an electrifying six length win in the trial at the beginning of the month, ultimately it was Smart’s young pretender, Gazwan, who stole the show.

Richie Mullen had timed his ride on this strong stayer to perfection and made the most of this tactical race to win by two lengths from Assy, with the courageous Al Mourtajez less than a length back in third, with the remainder of the field five lengths or more behind.

By Amer, he is full brother to the stables’ Rathowan, a horse who always seemed a little unlucky, having been runner up in a number of Group 1’s.

Smart was clearly delighted with his team’s performance saying. “We tried to take the sting out of Al Mourtajez, my horse is rated 117 and he still couldn’t go with that horse. Al Mourtajez is a very, very good horse, to go that speed and to still be fighting it out at the finish with us shows that.

"I think Assy probably went too fast after Al Mourtajez and Al Majh’Hoor, but if he had waited and they had got away, then we’d be asked “why didn’t you go?” He hasn’t been beaten far in

second anyway" Smart continued. “That’s the sort of race that Gazwan has always needed, a very strong pace and he will gallop all day long, he’s a very good horse in his own right."

Smart continued. "He was unlucky in France last year, but he was still juvenile, he has matured over the winter and there are lots of good things to come from him. It’s just a shame all the good races in Europe are a mile and a quarter as I really would like a mile and a half! He’s older now, he’s more mature, as of course is Assy. Hopefully now you’ll see more of Assy in Europe in the summer, it looks like we’ve got him back to his best as well. I’m very happy to go to war with those two! “The Triple Crown wouldn’t suit Gazwan, which is unfortunate. The mile would suit Assy, but what can you do? You have to take each race as it comes for the individual. I’m just so happy for Richie. He’s been riding for me for so, so long, and we’ve won Derbies and so on, but this is just great for him.” Mullen himself was relieved. “It’s been a long time coming you know! There have been a few near misses and obviously Djainka Des Forges last year was my best chance and the race

didn’t go to plan. Julian has always been a big supporter of mine. It’s 16 years since I first went to Dubai, he was the first trainer to give me rides. As I said, it has been a long time coming and I’m relieved more than anything. “It was a tough race, we knew Assy was in great form, he looked great at the post and his performance in the prep race, well, I’ve not seen too many Arabians win like that! I just thought back to what Gazwan did in Longchamp and I thought that the race was probably a year too early for him. He lacked experience and he got shuffled back early doors, but he really came home well that day. “Julian has always been keen on him and it’s a privilege and an honour to win a race like this. They’re hard to win anyway, but when you get nice rides, and after the near miss last year, and a few times when I haven’t been able to get here and the horse has won... So it’s been a bit frustrating, but it’s great to get the monkey off my back now!”

FRENCH CONNECTION Alban de Mieulle is both trainer and manager of HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Umm Qarn Farm in Qatar. Training for the farm since 1997, he has been responsible for some of their best horses including Nizam, Dahess, Al Dahma, Al Anood, Majd Al Arab, General, Tabarak and Al Tair. He divides his campaign between the Gulf in the winter and Europe in the summer.

Alban de Mieulle with Kalino (US) winner of the Gr1 PA Jewel Crown

Established in Qatar in 1988, Umm Qarn’s 580 acres are located next to a natural oasis in the desert north of Doha. At the centre of the farm is the Grand Hall which displays the many trophies that their horses have won, in 2011 it also played host to the delegates from the World Arabian Horse

Organisation Conference. With five barns to house the farm’s collection of horses in training and breeding stock, a horse walker that accommodates 15 horses, swimming pool, treadmill, solarium, plus oiled sand and turf training tracks, the farm is well equipped to produce racing champions.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

31

The aim of Sheikh Abdullah is to breed and race Arabians worldwide and he has purchased many of the top bloodlines to achieve this goal. With the farm’s success founded on the likes of Amer, Djelmila, Djebbel, Makzan, Sambist and Samsheik, the farms’ aim is to be continually improving its’ stock and to enthuse the younger generation with His Highness’s love of horses and equestrian competition.

Tabarak (by Nizam). They also stand two thoroughbred stallions, as well as Al Mamun Monlau for Al Shaqab.

With around 250 horses, including breeding stock split between Qatar and France, their stallions are based at the Haras du Grand Courgeon in Lion d’Angiers. The roster is headed by the prolific champion Amer, now 32, who is in turn responsible for their other stallions – General, Majd Al Arab, Nizam, Divamer and Al Tair, plus Al Tair’s half brother

De Mieulle has consistently been one of the Arabian racing world’s top trainers and this season in Qatar, he is ranked third in the Trainers Championship [on prize money to 20 March] with 30 winners from 160 runners. Despite not winning the feature event, Umm Qarn were the leading owners of the Emir’s Sword festival with four winners.

De Mieulle trains both Arabians and Thoroughbreds for Umm Qarn and since October 2014, Sheikh Abdullah’s principal jockey has been Olivier Peslier. Gaetan Faucon joined the team the following year and more recently, Jean Baptiste Hamel.

32

Olivier Peslier and TM Thunder Struck (US) go to post for the HH Emir's Sword

Having disappointed for the second year running in the Qatar World Cup, Kalino bounced back to form when winning the World’s Richest Arabian race, the Jewel Crown (GR1 PA) in Abu Dhabi in November. A bruised foot has interrupted his preparation for the Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA) in Dubai, making his participation doubtful, so their representative will be TM Thunder Struck. De Mieulle explains. “TM Thunder Struck will go to Dubai. 2000 metres is perfect, the Emir’s Sword over 2400 metres was too far for him yesterday. With the Qatar World Cup being transferred to Chantilly, the track would be perfect for Kalino, so we will try again, but for me, I think he is better over a shorter trip.”

Both horses raced in the Qatar International Trophy (Gr1 PA) at Goodwood last year, speaking of their efforts de Mieule said. “Goodwood is very nice, but you need to be there with a good horse, so at this stage I’m not sure which horse will go. "We tried last year with Thunder Struck but I don’t think the track suited him [8th]. Kalino [6th] didn’t enjoy the undulations, so maybe we will go with a younger horse. I have some nice four year olds so we will see. I have a very nice colt, Tayf (Amer x Djelmila, a brother to Majd Al Arab) who I think will be a champion. We have two or three who may go to the Derby (in France) but we have to beat the horse [Aba’Ath] who won yesterday!”

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

33

Speaking of the racing in Qatar he said. “They try to keep the racing here balanced, 50-50 Arabian and thoroughbred. It is more difficult to breed racing Arabians with the weather and so on out here, so I think there will be more thoroughbred racing and less Arabian racing here in the future, as lot of the Qataris are more involved with the Thoroughbreds than the Arabians now. It is easier to buy a three year old Thoroughbred from the Horses in Training sales in the UK and the level of thoroughbred racing here is not so high, a Group 1 win here, would be more like a Group 3 or Listed race in France or England.” He continued. “They have done a lot of work at the racecourse, though I think there were less people there [at the Festival] this year than last. It has been a difficult season to race, as the programme was not prepared in advance, so it has been difficult to plan. I hope next season here

will be better. When the season ends in May, it will be back to France. Only a few horses from here will go, as we have a lot of horses, mostly youngstock, in pre-training in France. I don’t have many older horses at the moment.” Concluding he said. “I like training Arabians, the standard of competition is higher now than it was 20 years ago. With Thoroughbreds if you make a mistake in training, you can usually overcome it, but with Arabs you must be very, very careful, because if you make mistake, sometimes they will never comeback. So it is more of a challenge, more for a horseman. When you have a good one, they are so nice - when they understand what they have to do, they give all they have, they give more than thoroughbreds. Thoroughbreds, they follow the herd, Arabians are different, much more interesting!” www.ummqarn.com

HERITAGE ARABIAN RACING CLUB 2016 Annual General Meeting

29 years young - Monarch AH at W'rsan Stables

HARC AGM 21 February Fairmont Hotel, Abu Dhabi The Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC) Annual General Meeting opened with the welcome news that earlier that morning

the Constitution of HARC had been notarised by Ahmed Adel Mohamed Abdelrazak (Chairman, Egypt), Deidre Hyde (Secretary, UAE), and fellow Steering Committee members, Almir Riberio (Brazil), Anthony Mountney (Australia), and Genny Haynes (UK) at the Swiss Embassy in Abu Dhabi.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

36

The objects of HARC are: - to promote the preservation and racing of Heritage Arabian horses - to agree a Heritage Arabian horse definition - to maintain a register of such horses for the purposes of racing - to bring sponsorship and support for races under the HARC banner - to encourage research into racing Heritage Arabian horses Genny Haynes reported on how the scheme operated in the UK in 2015, helping many smaller UK based owners boost their prize money from running their HARC approved horses. The aim was to support and promote these owners who may have drifted away from the sport having struggled to compete with imported bloodlines in recent years. HARC

approved horses received a prize money bonus in any domestic race if it finished in the first four places and a smaller bonus just for running in the higher grade races, even if it finished our of the first four. A covering was offered for UK breeders for DA Adios, courtesy of Cre Run Farms, a multiple Group 1 winner, World Arabian Horse Organisation Horse of the Year 2008 and a proven HARC approved stallion. In 2015 there were nine individual runners from the 13 registered horses, which ran in over 40 races, with the leading HARC horse being Whisper, who won twice. A twelve year old mare by The Wiking she was also the ARO Champion Mare and second in the overall Purebred Arabian Championship (by races won), an admirable achievement.

Speaking of her success prior to the AGM, her joint owner Linda Cross said "I am absolutely delighted that Whisper was the very first HARC ARO Champion Racehorse. She is a very special mare and was fabulously constant this year. The HARC premium scheme is a real boost to UK Owners and trainers as it rewards the hard work that everyone puts into these racehorses. On behalf of the Almost All Partnership I am incredibly grateful to the Heritage Arabian Racing Club for their sponsorship and support of the traditional Arabian breed."

incredibly grateful to HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the HARC committee for this new initiative and opportunity to boost the 'grass roots' of the sport of Arabian racing." The HARC initiative had been broadly welcomed by the 10 countries involved so far, particularly in areas where all the racing arabians are HARC approved such as Australia, Egypt and Brazil. All countries involved are looking forward to a successful HARC 2016 racing season.

As the long term aim of this scheme is to encourage breeders of traditionally bred Arabians back into the sport, ARO plans to run the scheme in a similar way for the 2016 season. Genny Haynes concluded "ARO is

W'RSAN STABLES A highlight was the invitation to the stables of His Higness Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan to view a selction of his horses, including the remarkable Monarch AH. Stud Manager Deidre Hyde gave an illuminating commentary and spoke with The Arabian Racehorse about the Heritage Arabian Racing Club.

Monarch AH with Deidre Hyde and HH Sheikh Sultan

The Stables’ brochure describes W’rsan as ‘home to a unique collection of some of the most treasured Polish racing bloodlines in the World’. It began in 2000 when HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan bought US Champion racehorse and multiple Champion sire Monarch AH, in addition to some of the best of the Magness herd. These horses joined a select band of Russian broodmares and have become a foundation for his successful stable today.

Proven performance is key and His Highness believes all his horses should undergo some level of training, be it racing, dressage or endurance before they are considered worthy to be retired to stud. The facilities are first class. W’sran boasts the first air conditioned indoor arena in Abu Dhabi and horses may use the 70m straight swimming pool all year round. Daily paddock access, mainly grassed, is also considered vital for the horses’ development and wellbeing.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

39

Deidre Hyde is the Stud Manager at W’rsan Stables for HH Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed. She has been involved in racing for many years, and even briefly as an amateur jockey, when she trained her own horses in the UK, in the late 1980’s. Hyde has been in the UAE since 1992 when she came over at the invitation of the manager of the Royal Stables. She describes her arrival, “ I came for two years and I’m still here now!” She continued. “I moved to Sheikh Sultan in 2000 when he was setting up his farm. The current health of Arabian racing depends on which part of the world you are in. Here it’s almost too healthy, there is the risk of people getting disenchanted because of their horses being balloted out of races - entries of 60 or more horses and a safety factor of only 16. However in the US and Europe, in general, it’s going through a tough period.” Explaining the thinking behind HARC she

said. “I think that HARC can play a role, I went into this because His Highness said we have to do something, he does believe a horse should look like an Arabian, not a show horse though. So we came up with this idea, which is a bit arbitrary, I’m the first to admit. We can never ever take the place of the top level of racing of course, but I do think we can fill a gap for the small Arabian owners and breeders and preserve the genetic variety of the Arabian, not just the racehorse, but the show lines which have been so spoilt, many of the horses look deformed and are not bred for function. “I have been astonished at the positive reception that HARC has received in general from around the world. Obviously as some of the French lines have been excluded, it has not been so popular there, but we are not saying you can’t race your horses. It is also not to do with purity,

because of course WAHO (World Arabian Horse Organisation) is the authority there, there has been enough talk about that and I have always maintained that we don’t actually know what a pure Arabian is. The exclusions were based on the study of marked increase in speed; however with

specialist breeding, improvements are possible and it doesn’t necessarily mean that a faster horse is an impure horse. However with such a narrow focus on speed, other factors can get lost, and we want to value the identity of the horse as much as the speed of it.

Speaking of the future Hyde commented. “I hope that this will encourage people back in the sport in countries where it has declined and also bring in new people too. It’s not for the short term, it’s for the longer term as so many people have left the sport. We hope that we can progress on the start we made in 2015.

“We now have Leigh Young in place to help with our promotion and the website www.harchorses.com will be going live very soon. We are aiming for gradual progress as there have been enough fractures in the sport, we see ourselves as complimenting and helping the sport.

"If people start with a HARC approved horse, get bitten by the bug and want to progress to the higher levels, there is no reason why they shouldn’t have both kinds of horses in their yard. We are not about exclusion, we just want a little space for us to have a chance to compete.

“Because every country has a different type of programme to suit their own requirements and horse population, we are there to support their individual needs as best we can. We welcome constructive ideas to move the scheme forward.”

AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE R2 Group 1 PA Meydan Round 2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge went to another of HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan's horses in Haajeb (FR). A six year old stallion by Mawood (AE), like the winner of Round 1, Thakif (FR) he is trained by Nacer Samiri. This was a big step up in class and distance as both his previous wins had been over a mile in lesser company, and had been beaten a distacne behind his stablemate Thakif, the previous month. Settled by Wayne Smith at the rear on the rail, the early pace was set by RB Smokin Rich (US). Versac PY (FR) took it up on the home turn, but Smith

switched Haajeb from the rail and, making their challenge up the centre, showed good acceleration and won going away. Versac PY kept on for second, ahead of AF Lafeh (AE) in third. Speaking afterwards Smith said "He travelled really strongly and I was pretty confident a long way out. I said to the trainer he coudl go straight to the Kahayla Classic and miss Super Saturday. The 2000m shoudl really suit him and a small break would freshen him up nicley."

AL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE R3 Group 1 PA Meydan The final round of the Al Maktoum Challenge, run over the same course and distance as the Kahayla Classic was won in taking style by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Handassa (FR), breaking the course record set by His Highness's Manark in the Gr1 PA Kahayla Classic last year. Slowly away, he had to be ridden along in the early stages by Paul Hanagan and raced three wide for the majority of the race, making his record time all the more notable. Still under pressure at the 500m mark, he finally hit the front at 300m and drew clear impressively to win by eight and a half

lengths from AF Tawaq (AE) and Nashmee (FR). This was his first start in the UAE and on dirt, whilst he was also a first UAE winner for his trainer Frenchman Francois Rohaut, who also trains another highly promising homebred for Sheikh Hamdan in Muraaqib (FR). He is from the first crop of Madjani (FR) who won three Kahayla Classics for Sheikh Hamdan and now heads to that contest at the end of the month.

HH THE PRESIDENT'S CUP Group 1 PA Abu Dhabi

Harry Bentley celebrates Thakif's win led in by Ms Lara Sawaya (c) Pamela Burton

The 2016 HH The President's Cup went to Thakif (FR) who held Abu Alabyad(FR) by half a length - a repeat of the placings from 2015, though this year there was no Steward's Enquiry to amend the result. It was a good performance by the eight year old from a poor draw, however the strong early pace meant that jockey Harry Bentley was able to improve his position as the leaders tore off in front. By the time his stablemate Shaheer's run had come to an end, Bentley was ideally placed to capitalise and sent his mount clear,

whilst Abu Alabyad attempted to close the gap in vain. A delighted Bentley said " This horse is really special to me and this brings back memories of 12 months ago. Any jockey will tell you we need good horses to get ourselves noticed and Thakif has been a big help for me. He is so versatile regarding trip and stayed really well tonight. I thought 2200m stretched him but he was still going at the line. We had a bad draw, so it was important to get a good position. Once we did, I was always happy. As he has aged he has got more straighforward and this was a top performance."

HH SHEIKHA FATIMA BINT MUBARAK LADIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (IFAHR) 2016 SERIES St. Moritz & Houston

Nil Kamla dominates at St. Moritz

NIL KAMLA DOUBLES UP ON WHITE TURF Eight lady riders lined up for the third leg of the HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies World Championship series run at the glamorous St. Moritz location as part of the 2016 White Turf Festival. They included Swiss professional, Astrid Wullschleger, who had been victorious in Abu Dhabi in the 2015 series final in November. Also lining up were Anna van den Troost from Belgium, Marie-Anne Bernadet from France, Ann Stokel from Great Britain, Csenge Sutak from Hungary, Caroline Murtagh from Ireland, Jessica Marcialis from Italy and Dina Danekilde from

Sweden. Owing to the warm conditions, for safety, the distance had to been reduced to 800m on the frozen lake where the races are held. This played to the strengths of Nil Kamla, who had won the rescheduled HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup (Listed PA) eight days previously. Sent to the front early on by Anna van den Troost, the 5 year old mare held her position to score by three lengths from Oriental Myth under Astrid Wullschelger and Alibaba Del Sol for Dina Delkilde.

Anna van den Troost also expressed her joy saying "It's a dream come true to win on the White Turf of St. Moritz! Thank you to everyone involved, especially Nellie Philipott and Lara Sawaya.

ASHBY 1-2 IN HOUSTON

It was a challenging task, as it was very important to keep the horse in the right position in the ealry stages. Towards the end there is a huge scramble as it was only 800m but I was happy with the way Nil Kamla responded.

Favourite Jewell AA (US) set the pace under Delphine Carcia Dubois of France, but the Asby pair were just too good when it mattered most.

It is a dream of every lady jockey to win and qualify for the finals. It was a great experience to ride in 2014 [when third on Bigg N Rich] and I will now work towards bettering that ride.'

Trainer Lynn Ashby saddled the frist two home in the Houston leg of the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship Series, with Royal Richess (US) and Belgian Sara Vermeersch holding off the late challenge of Our Princess (US) and British representative Jo Mason.

Multiple Darley Award winning trainer, Ashby said. "We love coming to Sam Houston for this race. We drew a great rider; she listened and read the form on this mare. She knew what to do, it was awesome."

Also on the card was the Grade 1 PA Amethyst Jewel, the first leg of the US Triple Jewel Series which went to the winner of the inaugural series last year, Paddy's Day under a fine ride by Kelsi Purcell for trainer Scott Powell. They now head for the Emerald Jewel in Pleasanton in July, with the final leg of the Diamond Jewel at Los Alamitos in September. There is also a bonus of $150,000 to play for too. Despite a 15 minute delay due to a power failure, Purcell was confident it had had no ill effect saying."It was tough, but he held his composure. He's just an amazing horse and will go all the way this year." Ms Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Raicng Festival, Chairman of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies, Chairman of the Ladies and Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities said,"It was a perfect night for Purebred Arabian horse racing. Both the races provided exciting fare for the fans here and some of the top Purebred Arabians racing in the US were in competition. "The HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival will be back in the US next month when the prestigious HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards and the US Darley Awards Ceremony will be

held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood style. She continued," This year we will also be introducing the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes, a Grade 1 PA race at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles, alongside the awards." The Collection of the Late Sir Peter O'Sullevan CBE Exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery, London Geoffrey Hughes & Sean Magee

Sir Peter O'Sullevan with binoculars by Johnny Jonas

When Peter died at the age of ninety-seven, in July of last year, there ended the life of an extraordinary man who was, to so many of us, a legend; universally known as "The Voice of Racing". Soon after I set up the Osborne Studio Gallery in 1986 I had a visit, quite out of the blue, from my boyhood hero. Ahead of the game, as ever, he had heard that our gallery was to specialise in racing and equestrian art. From day one he offered enormous encouragement and support and I was, of course, over the moon that a man I

idolised should take such an interest in this new enterprise. Over the subsequent years we developed a strong friendship. In 1998, soon after his final commentary and retirement on Hennessy Gold Cup day the previous November that I, on a whim, and assisted by plentiful Dutch courage, asked Peter whether he would consider becoming our Chairman. He did not give me an immediate answer but, to my amazement, he rang the next day to say he would be delighted to do so.

52

Over the next eighteen years OSG had tremendous support from Peter. With his ever discerning eye, he loved coming to the private views, and his presence and infectious sense of humour always ensured lively interaction- and the possibility of a little bit of innocent gossip! As the years went by, his love of art, became increasingly apparent to me and I always kept a chilled bottle close at hand for his frequent visits! His inquisitive and intelligent nature observed hidden depths in the paintings that others, including myself, often missed. Racing art was his great love but, beyond that, he collected works from his travels, particularly from North Africa, seeking out artists in remote places. Interestingly, subjects incorporating Pierrot are well represented in his collection. I did once ask him, after a memorably convivial evening,

why clowns were so close to his heart. As was so often the case with Peter, after an evening of bonhomie, when it comes to reporting his answer, my memory fails! Perhaps another may know the answer to this? His beloved wife, Pat, could well have been a possible influence. All his life Peter was intrigued by artists and as early as the late 1930s he became friends with many prominent painters and sculptors. John Skeaping became a lifelong comrade in arms. They shared a much loved greyhound called Slim, whom they raced at White City just after the War, providing many memorable jaunts. Sir Alfred Munnings and Edward Seago also became friends and, in recent years, leading international equestrian artists were willingly cajoled into using their talents to benefit his highly successful annual charitable trust lunch and auction.

These acclaimed artists are too numerous to mention, but Peter was enormously respectful of their creativity. Unusually acknowledgement was always made in his commentaries to any trophy or work of art presented; a further legacy of the great man. In this retrospective, we have borrowed a number of bequeathed works for which we are sincerely thankful. Many others are for sale, of which The Peter O'Sullevan Charitable Trust will be a beneficiary. Additionally we have borrowed photographs and ephemera in an attempt to open a window on both his private and public life, on and off the turf. His natural modesty forbade it but every indication I had from our conversations in the latter part of his life, suggested he would love others to share some of these memories. I also think that he would have appreciated how appropriate it is that the

period of the exhibition includes the four days of the Cheltenham Festival. It is no secret that this was his favourite time of the year. I hope you will take as much pleasure out of this exhibition as we have in putting it together. I would particularly like to thank Sean Magee, a close friend of Peter's, for his in-depth archival work, which has helped enable this commemoration of an extraordinary life. GH The Peter O’Sullevan Archive One evening about five years ago, Peter opened the second bottle of rosÊ and broached a matter which had been exercising him. When the time came, what was to be done with all the documentary material which he had accumulated, and which was now occupying so many nooks and crannies in Cranmer Court? Would I care to take custody of it?

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

54

Of course I would. He had already given me the fifty-one scrapbooks into which he had pasted cuttings of everything he had written during his long career as a journalist, and although the sheer mass of other material in the flat was daunting, to go through it was the racing historian’s equivalent of Howard Carter opening Tutankhamun’s tomb. A self-acknowledged hoarder, Peter had kept a huge amount of material which recorded his life, from those extraordinary commentary charts which he had so diligently annotated with facts and figures about the race in prospect, to extensive correspondence with a wide circle of friends and fans on a huge variety of racing and non-racing subjects, plus a host of betting vouchers (most of them showing a profit) and all manner of other ephemera. Here was a treasure trove, spilling out of

every cupboard and drawer. After Peter died I started working through the cornucopia he had left behind, and what made perusal of this material so riveting was the unexpected. There is the leaflet which he planned to smuggle into Germany in July 1939, exhorting workers to resist the Nazis – a scheme foiled when travel restrictions came into force. There is the script, tweaked with the perfectionist O’Sullevan pen, for his appearance on The Morecambe and Wise Show. There is a musical greeting from Andrew Lloyd Webber to mark his retirement, and the letter from Albert Roux declaring Peter’s beloved miniature poodle Topolina ‘a welcome visitor of Le Gavroche and all other Roux enterprises where she is renowned for her impeccable conduct.’

Study of a Horse - unsigned THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

55

And there are sheaves of old betting vouchers, notably one from William Wood Turf Accountants closing Peter’s account: ‘After three years during which you have won consistently, we shall have to give you best and ask you to bet elsewhere. You are too good for us!’ We have tried to reflect that variety in the items on display in this exhibition, but the most evocative reminders of ‘The Voice’ at his greatest remain those extraordinary commentary charts which so graphically bear witness to his fastidious preparation before a big race. Look at the chart for Nijinsky’s Derby, or Grundy and Bustino’s King George, or one of Red Rum’s Grand Nationals, and you hear Peter’s commentary in your mind’s ear.

Blinkers by Peter Seichaud

Since his death we have unearthed more and more material in the flat – his chart for Sir Ivor’s Derby, a precious relic, was found in a kitchen drawer! – and over the next few months the whole archive will be organised to form a resource not only for racing historians but for those studying the wider canvas of twentieth-century social history. Some items will be bequeathed and a few will be sold, and the remaining collection will enjoy a safe haven in The Cox Library of racing books (www.thecoxlibrary.com) – a happy arrangement which will meet Peter’s desire that his papers should be available in perpetuity. Future researchers have a real treat in store. SM

KAOLINO (FR) 2015 ARO Champion Sire

Richard Lancaster with Kaolino (FR) at the Mandolyn Hill Farm Open Day last year (c) Rachael Gowland

2015 was an important year for US based Shadwell stallion Kaolino. He topped the UK ARO Arabian Sires tables by races won, with leading performers including Zayin Zachilles, Kamikaze and Kao Kat MHF, all with two wins a piece. Internationally, he rounded off the year as the sire of Kalino, who came good in Abu Dhabi when dropped back in trip in the World's Richest Purebred Arabian race, the Group 1 Jewel Crown.

and UAE, the pinacle being the Group 1 PA Kahayla Classic. A son of Dormane, who passed away last year, Kaolino is a half brother to the speedy Quaolino (by Kerbella) winner of DIAR's Zabeel International Stakes and the Liwa Oasis in Abu Dhabi, both Group 1 contests. His fourth dam is the remarkable Nevadour, so is from the same family that has produced numerous Group 1 winners including No Risk Al Maury, Mister Ginoux, Mkeefa and Silvine Al Maury.

Kaolino himself won nine times in the UK THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

58

Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster commented. "Even if Kaolino stands in America, we see him now as champion sire in the UK. This demonstrates how international Arabian racing and breeding have become in recent years. "Kaolino was a top horse who raced in the UK and UAE winning the Kahayla Classic in 2004. It is wonderful to see his offspring doing so well around the world, including Kalino (US), winner of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr.1) in Abu Dhabi."

"We at Mandolynn Hill are thrilled with what Kaolino's offspring are acheiving on the track. Kaolino was super star and he passes on his good balance, conformation and bone. We are looking forward to his runners this year". Morgan is also the breeder of two of Kaolino's UK winners last season, Katonahotinroof MHF and Kao Kat MHF. www.shadwellarabian.co.uk www.madolynn.com

He stands at Mandolynn Hill Farm in Aubrey, Texas for $2,500 (natural cover or frozen semen, Euro fee on application). Michelle Morgan the farm's owner said,
