“We missed this wonderful event last year, and are very pleased to once again welcome the President of the UAE Cup at Churchill Downs” said Kristin Warfield, Vice President of Partnerships at Churchill Downs. “We are excited that many of America’s best Arabian horses will compete at our historic track in September, and look forward to continuing this new tradition in the years to come.” "We are delighted to bring back the President of the UAE cup series to the USA and Churchill Downs,"said general secretary of the Presidents Cup Series, Mr. Faisal Al Rahmani. "The series was established by the late Shk Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to promote and celebrate the Arabian horse worldwide and its' significant place in UAE culture and history. What better way to do this than to hold the race at the home of The Kentucky Derby". The Arabian Jockey Club, working in conjunction with Churchill Downs will carry all pertinent information for this race on its website www.arabianracing.org, AJC Facebook page, AJC Eblasts, and other social media outlets.
Meanwhile in the UK, the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) announced that the President of the UAE Cup will resume its’ association with the UK Arabian Derby, which is to be run at Doncaster as part of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival on Thursday 8 September.
The President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby) is a Group 1 contest for four-year-old Purebred Arabians, sponsored by Abu Dhabi Sports Council, it boasts a prize fund of £80,000, which is a huge increase on previous years. Faisal Al Rahmani, General Secretary for the President of the UAE Cup Program commented. “We are delighted to bring the President of the UAE Cup series back to Britain, giving the UK Arabian Derby the prominence it deserves. "

He continued."The series was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to promote and celebrate the Arabian horse worldwide and its’ significant place in UAE culture and history. What better way to do this than to hold the race at the same Festival as Britain’s oldest Thoroughbred Classic, the St Leger, as the Purebred Arabian was the foundation on which the modern Thoroughbred was based. ” ARC Chief Executive, Martin Cruddace said “We are delighted to be hosting ARO and welcoming the President of the UAE series to Doncaster as part of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival. The race is an important part of Ladies Day and with a £100,000 prize fund is bound to be a competitive race. We wish everyone involved the best of luck.”
ARO Director, Genny Haynes was thrilled, saying. “We are excited to welcome back the President of the UAE Cup and are extremely grateful to the Abu Dhabi Sports Council for their generous support of our feature race for four-year-olds. The series last sponsored the UK Arabian Derby in 2013, when it was run at Newmarket as part of the July Festival meeting. In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer a travel concession for runners travelling from outside Great Britain.” She continued. “This is a truly significant development for the sport of Arabian racing in the UK as the increased prize fund will secure our position in the European Pattern Calendar and ensure top quality Purebred Arabian racing maintains its foothold in Britain. I’m sure we will attract a strong international field,

further enhancing the status of Arabian racing in the UK, with it being run as part of Doncaster’s most prestigious meeting of the year.” Highlights from the first entry stage which closed on 10 August, include the Group 3 winners Tayf and Ibn Azadi, plus the Group placed Djelamer and Lightning Bolt. Tayf was very narrrowly denied a victory in the Qatar Arabian Derby at Chantilly in May, whilst his stablemate Djelamer was less than four lengths off super mare Sylvine Al Maury in the Group 1 Doha Cup (Pirx Manganate) at Deauville earlier this month. Though they are stepping up in class, both Difaa and Jamaayil have looked very progressive in all their UK starts.

DUBAI INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN RACES 2016
Muraaqib (FR) wins the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes Gr1 PA under Francois Xavier Bertras for Francois Rohaut and DIAR patron HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum
A fantastic crowd gathered at Newbury racecourse to watch the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR), the flagship meeting of the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) season in the UK. Numbers reached 9,100, a huge increase on recent years. DIAR and ARO patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, had one of his most successful meetings in many years, winning with Jamaayil and Foaad, in the first two races and then two Group 1 PA successes with Radames in the Jebel Ali Racecourse Za'abeel International and Muraaqib in
the Shadwell Dubai International. He also had six runners placed as well. There was also a big increase in international runners at the meeting, as at 28, they were more than double last years’ figures. As well as wins for Foaad and Muraaqib, who are trained in France, Italy gained its first DIAR success with Urge Di Gallura. The Endo Botti trained colt extended his unbeaten sequence to five, winning from the front in the Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes.

Radames (FR) and Dane O'Neill win the Jebel Ali Za'abeel International in front of the packed stands
The final two races were both won by British homebreds in Kamikaze for Adam Newey and the Almost All Partnership and Zayin Zachilles for Zayin Arabian Stud and trainer Peter Hammersley. This brought further success to HH Sheikh Hamdan, as both were sired by the Shadwell Arabian Stallion, Kaolino. ARO Racing Manager, Amanda Smith commented. “Dubai International Arabian Races is the flagship event of the whole ARO racing calendar. It is a day at which everyone in Arabian racing wants to be present, and a day at which everybody, from the grassroots upwards, wants to have a winner.” She continued. “Thanks to the
generous patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the sponsors and the new initiatives put forward by the DIAR Committee, we had 80 runners, of which 28 were from overseas, making it a truly international contest. His Highness’s passion for the Arabian racehorse and support for Arabian racing worldwide was rewarded with four winners, three of which he bred himself. “Whilst they may not have a had a record fourth win with Al Mouhannad in the Za’abeel (Gr1PA), the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Sylvine Al Maury could not have been more impressive winning the Dubai Duty Free Hatta International (Gr1PA). She is their new star filly and we hope she will return to defend her title next year.”

ARO Director and Vice Chairman of the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), Genny Haynes said. “The support from the local communities, as well as from the global Arabian racing followers, has exceeded all expectations, with a huge rise in attendance. We are delighted for His Highness’s personal success and for Italy who have secured their first overseas Pattern win. Italy has only recently been accepted into IFAHR so this will be an incredible boost to Arabian racing in that country.

“In addition, the increase in British bred, and trained, runners in the Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes, a Group 2 contest, exclusively for three-year-olds and also the largest field on the card, demonstrates that the sport in the UK is far healthier than people recognise. These are the runners for future DIAR events, which I hope will continue to be as successful as the programme has been this year.”

Jamaayil (GB) and Dane O'Neill impress the crowds with an easy win in the first for Phil Collington and HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum
What better start for ARO Patron HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum than to win the first race with his homebred filly Jamaayil. She had made quite an impression when winning by nine lengths at Taunton in the Royal Cavalry of Oman Maiden Stakes over the same trip and had been sent off as a warm favourite. The daughter of Al Jakbar was held up in the early stages, but made smooth progress under Dane O’Neill to take the lead inside the final three furlongs. She quickly drew clear of her rivals to win by twelve lengths with plenty in
hand. Suhaim, a previous winner on DIAR, was unable to go with Sheikh Hamdan’s filly, but went into second in the closing stages ahead of Aljawaaher who had won this event in 2013. Shadwell Director Richard Lancaster was pleased with the filly saying. “Jamaayil exceeded expectations, she couldn’t have won any easier, it was between her and Sunbulla as to who would run in this race. I though 10 stone was a bit too much for Sunbulla, Phil and I talked about it and in the end she ran a very good race in the Conditions to be second.”

Trainer Philip Collington had been confident of his fillies’ abilities’ saying. “I was really pleased with Jamaayil. Her work has been so progressive since her maiden win and I hoped she would take a lot of beating today, but to win the way she did was amazing. I wasn’t worried that she had gone too soon, I had said to Dane before he went out, to get some cover early on and try and get her settled. After that I told him he could do whatever he wanted, because
when she won her maiden she hit the front and wasn’t stopping.” He continued. “She looks a really nice forward going type, who will do well next year. She could go for the UK Arabian Derby, it’s another two furlongs, but she looks like she would get the trip, we’ll have to see what His Highness wants to do next.”

Emirates NBD International Stakes 1m2f
Foaad (FR) and Francois-Xavier Bertras cross the line unchallenged
Success followed swiftly as Foaad, formerly trained by Gill Duffield in Newmarket and now with Francois Rohaut, led home a one-two for His Highness in the conditions event, finishing just over three lengths ahead of Sunbulla. Kasib for the Royal Cavalry of Oman was a neck away in second having led in the early on. Another homebred, this time by His Highness’s triple Kahayla Classic winner Madjani, the colt went clear inside the final half mile and though
Sunbulla made good headway in the latter stages, it was not enough to catch Foaad. Richard Lancaster said. “Foaad ran here last year in a maiden and was fifth. We always thought he was going to make up into a nice horse and Francois came and had a look at him in November. We sent him over, and he ran a few weeks ago and was third and he’s kept on improving. I think what we saw today was a very good performance.”

Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes Group 2 PA 7f
Urge Di Gallura (IT) and Antonio Fresu leaving the paddoclk
In many ways the most significant race of the day was the Emirates Equestrian Federation International Stakes, the Group 2 contest for three years olds. Since the 13 runners in 2013, field sizes have shrunk to between five and six starters the last three years, so to have 15 three years old line up, of which nine were British trained or bred, was a huge boost to the domestic programme.
Authorities (IFAHR) in October last year. Italy has received considerable international support since their acceptance, with DIAR staging the first Italian Listed PA race at Capanelle and hosting the HH Sheikh Mansoor sponsored World Arabian Horse Racing Conference in May. Urge Di Gallura had won during the WAHRC meeting as well as the DIAR prep race and came into the contest unbeaten.
Whilst the winner was Italian, it was no less important, as Italy had only been accepted into the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing
Ridden by the Italian Antonio Fresu, who is based with Thoroughbred trainer, Ed Walker in Newmarket, they broke well and were quickly in

In a striking performance, they had the field off the bridle by halfway and it took little urging from Fresu to draw clear to win from a very green Shabih Alreeh, who just snatched second in the dying strides from Alazeez. Haivng won a DIAR warm up race in Italy, he was also the first horse to claim one of the four bonus prizes on offer on the day. Trained by Endo Botti, part of Italy’s famous racing dynasty, and bred by Picconi Giovanna, all the connections who were present were clearly delighted to be their country’s first overseas win in a PA Group race and the first at DIAR. Speaking on behalf of Botti, his partner Cristiana Brivio praised the efforts of the DIAR committee saying. “We only started training Arabians in February, so this is a first for us too. We would like to have more in training and we would come to DIAR again. We’ll see how he comes out of the race and look at the programme to see where he will go next.”
Annalisa Landucci, a Director of Association Nationale Italiana Cavallo Arabia (ANICA) was very happy for the support of DIAR and Shadwell Arabians, who have been assisting their racing in Italy for the last five years. She said. “We would hope to come again, with the right horse. Joining IFAHR has been very helpful for Italian breeding and racing and we are grateful that we can race internationally in 2016.” Translating on behalf of Urge Di Gallura’s breeder she continued. “She has been breeding Arabians in Sardinia for20 years. She has 10-12 mares, for racing and endurance. Urge Di Gallura is one of the best horses she has bred and she has a two year old full brother. He is from the same family as Zefiro de Nulvi, the dam’s sister won a lot of races in Italy, whilst his sire Caligola, a grandson of Kesberoy, raced against Dahess when he came to Italy and wasn’t beaten far.”

Jebel Ali Racecourse Za'abeel International Stakes Group 1 PA 6f
Radames (FR) and Dane O'Neill go to post
The Jebel Ali Racecourse Za’aabel International Stakes has been dominated by the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Al Mouhannad since 2013 and though coming into the race on the back of some less than inspiring form, she was still sent off as favourite. Ridden by Roberto Carlos-Montenegro who had scored that original victory on the mare, she came with her trademark late run, but it was to no avail. The eight year old Radames, who had come wide and led from halfway, kept Kao Kat MHF and Al Mouhannad at bay. This gave HH Sheikh Hamdan a third win, and Collington a second, however
it was a significant first Group 1 success for the trainer, who took over some of His Highness’s horses on his former employer, Gill Duffiled’s retirement at the end of last season. Collington was delighted with Radames, who he had ridden last season. “He was just awesome. Six furlongs is arguably his best trip. He was fourth in this last year, beaten two and a half lengths on soft ground. He got his ground today and turned it round well with Al Mouhannad. Dane gave him a great ride. He really is one of the favourites in the yard, everybody loves him and to win a Group 1 with him is fantastic.”

Sylvine Al Maury (FR) and Jean-Bernard Eyquem gallop away with the Dubai Duty Free Hatta International Stakes after a ten month break
Whilst Al Mouhannad’s star was on the wane, it was the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s other top female, Sylvine Al Maury who stole the show in the Dubai Duty Free Hatta International. The highest rated Arabian filly of 2015, Sylvine Al Maury had never been out of the first three in all nine career starts and had already won five Group races.

HH Sheikh Hamdan’s Aghsaan, couldn’t catch Sylvine Al Maury, however she was not disgraced in second, having progressed well all season. Eyquem was pleased with her performance saying. “I know the filly perfectly. She had some questions to answer as ten months (off the track) is a long time, but the filly was very tough, she ran a perfect race, she never pulled. In the last two furlongs she had plenty left and I asked her to quicken as she needs to work. She is a really good filly and is ready to meet any horse in the Qatar Arabian World Cup in October.” Trainer Elizabeth Bernard had explained that Sylvine Al Maury’s return to racing had been delayed by a virus in the yard, so she couldn’t be entirely confident of her performance, knowing that she was still only around 80% fit. A half sister to Sivit Al Maury who won the International Malazgirt Trophy (GrIPA) in Istanbul last year, she is from the family of Dubai International Stakes (Gr1PA) winner, No Risk Al
Maury and Qatar International Trophy (Gr1PA) winner, Mister Ginoux. Produced by one of Arabian racing's leading breeders Renée -Laure Koch who breeds to sell and belives her clients are the best form of publicity. She has been working with JeanFrancois and and his widow, Elizabeth Bernard for a number of years so her bloodlines are well known to them. Her selction of broodmares is rigorous and she studies pedigrees as far back as 8 -10 generations when making her selections. She was present to witness Sylvine Al Maury's win and was clearly delighted saying, “It’s extraordinary. I try to constantly improve my breeding and Sylvine stood out from the start. We have a yearling full brother at home, we call him Seasbiscuit – I hope he will be the Seabiscuit of our stud.”

Shadwell Dubai International Stakes Group 1 PA 1m2f
Francois Xavier Bertras and Muraaqib (FR) go to post for the feature event of DIAR 2016
The feature race of the meeting is the Shadwell Dubai International Stakes and it certainly proved to be the highlight for His Highness as he recorded further home bred success with, Muraaqib. Trainer Francois Rohaut held all the aces as Muraaqib, a dual Group 1 winner, had finished 2015 as the leading juvenile colt in Europe and had already put older horses firmly in their place on his reappearance in a Group 2 in Toulouse. With main
opponent Majeed a non-runner, Muraaqib was left 12lbs clear on ratings and duly sauntered home from Toutatix and the other Italian challenger, Lares De Pine. This gave His Highness a lucky thirteenth win in the event. Shadwell Stud Director, Richard Lancaster was full of praise for the colt. “He’s obviously got a lot of ability. His grandsire, Bengali D’Albret, also won this event twice.

He continued."We’ll wait to see where His Highness would like him to go next, but the Qatar Arabian World Cup could be on the agenda, if the going isn’t heavy. That’s quite a long way off, so the next target would be Deauville. “I think he’s one of the most exciting
horses we’ve bred, he could rank with No Risk Al Maury and Madjani in time, he’s only four and they kept racing until they were much older. His win at Toulouse showed that he had trained on and of course to win today was most important.

HE Mirza Al Sayegh (right) presents the trophies
He continued. "It was a shame there wasn’t a bit more pace in the race, but he won easily enough. FrancoisXaavier Bertras had no option but to hit the front when he did, half a mile from home, but the great thing was he was able to pick up again, like he did last year in Saint-Cloud and you don’t always get that with Arabians. So that is a good sign of his battling qualities." “I think at four he is too young to head out to Dubai for the World Cup just yet and of course Francois has Handassa in training as well, who will most probably go back there. He won the trial race very easily, but I think maybe the Kahayla Classic came a bit too soon after that effort. “He’s the best of Tashreefat’s progeny so far. She’s had two other runners, but they didn’t live up to expectations like
this horse has, though they were lovely looking horses. His three-year-old half brother by No Risk Al Maury is also with Francois and he had his first run recently in La Teste and looks like he will progress from that.” François Rohaut explained. "It's a pleasure to come to Newbury and we make it a real goal. This victory is all the more pleasing as Sheikh Hamdan had not previously seen this horse run other than on television. Muraaqib is a champion. He will go to Deauville in August and depending on his performance, he could go to Chantilly. He is a horse that travels well and he proved it today, his first run outside France.” www.shadwellarabian.co.uk

Rotana Hotels & Resorts Premier (0-105) Handicap Stakes 1m4f
Kamikaze (GB) in the parade ring
Whilst HH Sheikh Hamdan’s runners in the Rotana Resorts and Hotels Premier Handicap were unable to provide him with further success, the winner Kamikaze was sired by a Shadwell Arabian stallion, Kaolino. Given a positive ride by Keiran Shoemark, Kamikaze was always handy, leading in the early stages, he was passed, led again with half a mile to go, headed again and then switched to the centre of the course and rallied well to take command inside the final furlong. His Highness’s Naar stayed on well to take second on the line, ahead of another of his runners, Awzaan who had been sent off favourite, but had been hampered at the start and lost ground. Trainer and part-owner-breeder, Adam
Newey commented. “I’m very pleased with Kamikaze, finally everything went right today. It’s just been a mistake all season really – first time out I put ear plugs in him and it switched him off too much, next time the jockey didn’t follow any orders, so he was two lengths off the winner and on his previous start his bloods were wrong when he came back, I didn’t expect him to win, though it was a nice prep for this race." He continued."Today the ground was perfect and Keiran did everything I’d asked. I knew he could do it, it just it all needed to fall right for him. I don’t know where we’ll go next as there are not many staying races, however he’s won this, which has been the target all season, anything else we can pick up will be a bonus.”

Nationl Academy of Indian Payroll (40-75) Handicap Stakes 7f
Harry Bentley and Zayin Zachilles (GB) take control in the final race
The final event, the National Academy of Indian Payroll Handicap Stakes was won by another son of Kaolino in Zayin Zachilles. This was a first DIAR success for owner-breeder Paul Simmons and for trainer Peter Hammersley, who had fielded five of the 14 declared horses. A race that had caused a certain amount of controversy in some quarters when it was re-opened to professional jockeys as well as amateurs, it was nonetheless a great race to close DIAR 2016.
Zayin Zachilles who had previously finished fifth and sixth in previous years was given a fine ride by Harry Bentley. Hitting the front with a furlong to go and drawing well clear of Parma T, who must surely gain compensation soon, Zayin Zachilles travelled well throughout the race. Aurora Forta and Unity Belle, also trained by Hammersley were third and fourth respectively.

Harry Bentley with Zayin Zachilles, and Paul Simmons An emotional Simmons said. “I’ve been coming to DIAR for 18 years and had runners for the last 10 years and as a breeder and as an owner, you want to win on Dubai Day. That seven furlong race, I’ve had so many runners and I’ve never been better than fifth, which was Zayin Zachilles last year. It’s so competitive and such a tough race. We knew he was fit and well, he’d run brilliantly at Chelmsford, but we also learnt there that he has to be produced late. Harry Bentley gave him a masterclass ride. Exactly to the book, coasting to the front with a furlong to go.
and the place that has always eluded me, winner-wise, It’s what I’ve dreamed about for a very long time. It’s fantastic, he’s such a lovely horse, he’s so consistent, he’ll be standing at stud next year so this will help too.”
“For me as an owner-breeder it’s the place that I’ve always wanted to win at

He concluded. “Zayin Zodiac’s run in the first was very disappointing so I’ve gone from one end of spectrum to the other. It was a brilliant training performance by Pete as well. He had a slow start to the season since moving yards in March, but it’s great for the whole team there to have a Dubai Day winner.”

QATAR INTERNTIONAL STAKES Group 1 PA - Goodwood
Julien Auge looks at the big screen as he crosses the line on Al Mourtajez (FR) to win the Qatar International Stakes (Gr1PA) by eight lengths Al Shaqab’s Al Mourtajez stamped his authority as the World’s Top Arabian with an imperious performance in the Qatar International Stakes (Group 1 PA) at Goodwood this afternoon. Demolishing a high quality field, he drew away from his competitors to win by eight lengths from last year’s second Prada T and Sir Bani Yas in third. Trainer Thomas Fourcy was delighted with his horses’ performance saying. “The horse runs very well. He can go fast, but has the stamina for long distances too. He is outstanding, a real
champion. He gets better year after year as he matures. “His objective is the Doha Triple Crown. He will run in the Qatar Arabian World Cup on Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe day and then takes his revenge in Doha, in the HH Emir’s Sword.” Al Shaqab Racing Manger, Harry Herbert said. “He is the best Purebred Arabian in training and I think it is fantastic for Sheikh Joaan and Qatar, who sponsor this great week, to win this prestigious race."

He continued. “This is obviously the first race of the Doha Triple Crown series which we will be doing our very best to try and win. This is a great start in terms of that, but also a fantastic ending to a very successful week for Al Shaqab.” Breeder Hassan Moussli who was also present commented. “It’s an old Crabbet family, crossed with French blood. Fatzica the grand dam possesses top Tunisian blood with Ourour, and also the blood of Fatma, a truly great mare of the French stud book, by Fazour. So Al Mourtajez comes from a great family.” Arabian Racing Organisation Racing Manager Amanda Smith said. “That was an exceptional performance from Al Mourtajez in his first start at a mile. He is now a real contender to be the
first horse to claim the $1 million dollar bonus, should he win the next two races in the series, having won both those contests previously. We were delighted with the quality of the field and to see last year’s winner and runner-up, Sir Bani Yas and Prada T, fill the places, upholds the quality of the form. “We are also very grateful for the support of our sponsor Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, who have given us the honour of staging the first leg of such a high-profile initiative for international Arabian racing. The addition of this race in the UK calendar is an exciting development for the sport, both domestically and worldwide.”

Doha Cup (Prix Manganate) Gr1PA 4yo+ 2000m HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Reda was quickly sent to the front, setting the pace for stablemate Gazwan who was held up, behind eventual winner, Sylvine Al Maury, with Ibn Azadi in second ahead of Majeed with Djelamer bringing up the rear. Racing in Indian file, the positions remained unchanged until they entered the home straight when Djelamer, Gazwan and Sylvine Al Maury all moved to the centre of the
course in preparation to make their challenges on Reda’s lead. Majeed suffered most, as though he was not hampered, the field came across, just as he was beginning his run. However he was able to track the winner, moving through into second, though he was not quite able to reach her, despite staying on well. It was an eyecatching run for Djelamer, who looked booked for third, as he was just caught by Gazwan, for whom stamina is a great strength, in the final strides.

This was a third Group 1 win for the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s Sylvine Al Maury, her trainer, Elisabeth Bernard, moved to tears after this success, said. "For her return to Newbury after ten months off, it had been a sensational performance. We were fortunate that the mare improved after this race, and today she was 100%, which was not the case at Newbury. We will simply ignore the Prix Dragon and go directly to the Qatar Arabian World Cup. This is a great mare.” Al Rayaan Cup (Prix Kesberoy) Gr1PA 2000m 3yo only This featured two unbeaten colts Dahhm for HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed, and Ahzar for Jean Marc de Watrigant. Ahzar had recently won the Shadwell Prix Tidjani (Gr3PA) at La Teste, whilst Dahhm had won the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr1PA) at Chantilly. Also of interest was Shabih Alreeh, who had been runner-up to Urge Di Gallura at DIAR and stablemate Ebraz, a full brother to Mared Al Sahra and Mu’azzaz, he was making his debut.
the line. Ebraz was another who came with a late run and just pipped Shabih Alreeh for third, though it was a much more polished performance from the son of Jaafer that at Newbury. Trainer, Didier Guillemin said. “We had doubts, because it was the first time he tried 2,000 meters. So I asked his jockey to take his time. At Chantilly, he also won coming from behind - so do not change a tactic that wins! This is a good colt, but I think 2,000m represents the end of the world for him. He should run at Saint-Cloud on the Friday of the Arc weekend and then in Toulouse, for the Breeders' Cup, which is the program that we followed last year with Mabrooka. "
Ahzar set the pace, with Shabih Alreeh and Ebraz close in behind, whilst Dahhm was settled by regular jockey Alexander Gavilan at the back of the seven runner field. As the field closed up, rounding the home turn and entering the straight, Shabih Alreeh led, but was briefly headed by Al Mounteze Monlau, before Ahzar regained command. However coming with a strong run on the outside was Dahhm, who put the race to bed in a few strides just before

HEREFORD DOUBLE FOR ARO NOVICE MALLOW The Arabian Racing Organisation's third HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nayhan Festival meeting at Hereford saw ARO novice jockey, Malcolm Mallow, get off the mark in style
Malcolm Mallow and Trip To Khairo (GB)
The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) novice jockey Malcolm Mallow, got off the mark in some style with a quick fire double at the third of four HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival fixtures at Hereford. He powered home on Jenny’s Peyton’s Trip To Khairo in the longest race of the day and then followed up on Maidaan for his boss, trainer Philip
Collington and owner-breeder, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. On only his fifth ride under ARO rules, Mallow steered the 13 year old mare, Trip To Khairo to a seven length success in the 1m6f Wathba Stud Farm Cup (0-40) Handicap Stakes.
THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

He commented. “I asked Mrs Peyton for the ride, right back at the start of the season and she finally put me up today, which was brilliant. The mare is old enough now, she knows her job, it was just a case of getting her round the bends and she did everything else.” Of Maidaan’s win in the Wathba Stallions Stakes he said. “I ride Maidaan in all his work at home and I know exactly what he’s capable of. He’s not keen on jumping from the stalls, but he seems to like tape starts and he really enjoys being out in front. 'I had a season point-to-pointing, riding a winner from 14 rides and I started working for Phil in April this
year. I can’t thank him enough for the chances he’s given me.” Also recording his first win was Difaa in the Wathba Stallions Maiden Stakes which opened the days’ proceedings. The four year old gelding by Jiyush had made an eye catching debut when second at Chelmsford last month. This warranted a transfer from his owner Nicola Thorne into the care of James Owen, currently vying for the leadership of the 2016 Trainers Championship table. This marks a welcome return to Arabian racing for top Endurance GB rider Thorne, who is now also breeding Arabian racehorses sired by her original racehorse, Tidabret, a Listed winner.

I rode him in his last piece of work at home on Wednesday and he went really well. When I did hit the front today, though he was still a bit green, he stuck to his task well and I struggled to pull him up at the end.” There was further success for Paul Simmons’ homebred Zayin Zachilles, who followed up his recent Newbury victory with a brave performance to win by a head in the feature handicap of the day, the Wathba Stallions (0-80) Handicap Stakes. "I'm delighted with him," enthused Simmons. "He's a very special horse to win over seven furlongs on Dubai Day and then
come here and win over a mile and a half, in a really hot race just two weeks later. He's been a superstar, winning twice a year since he started, I wish I had ten of him!" More homebred success came for Adam Newey. He not only trained the Wathba Stud Farm Cup (0-60) Handicap winner Synergy, but bred her with Sam Davison and owns her in partnership with Linda Cross. "It's taken long enough, but we've finally got there with her." Newey commented. "She would have hated the ground too. We need a gallopiong flat track for her, we were all set for Dubai Day and then she was ill, so we had to change plans. Hopefully she will go on from that now, Will gave her a good positive ride."

The blinkers may have helped Kao Kat too, I did think in his last race when Radames beat him here, that perhaps they might help, though it could just be the way he runs. Trainer Elizabeth Bernard was delighted saying. “It was hard at the finish as the horses went to different sides of the track. Sir Bani Yas likes to battle, so when he can’t see the other horses, it is more difficult. If he gets to the front too early, he stops because he thinks his job is finished, so it is very important to hit the front at the last moment. Tadhg O’Shea rode him very well as he doesn’t know him. We may have another race before the Qatar World Cup, but I will speak with the racing manager.” Arabian Racing Organisation Director Genny Haynes couldn’t have been happier with how the two Emirates Days at Sandown had gone commenting. “That was a superb performance by Sir Bani Yas to win

SUPER For 2016, the initial teams were required to include a minimum of two four year olds, no unraced horses and two overseas trained horses were permitted, with the horses selected from the ARO list of registered runners. A number of teams included the following horses who did not qualify under those criteria: Alhaader, Dossar Athbah, Elyassat, Fatinah, Hau Kola, Istiqlaal, Jamaayil and Yeskan Du Cayrou. Any points scored by these horses did not qualify during the period 17 April - 29 May. After the seven day transfer window (after Taunton on 22 May) most of those horses were then qualified as they had run at least once in that period - only Dossah Athbah and Istiqlaal remain not qualified after 29 May. In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the number of fully qualified runners from the start of the competition will be taken into account. Points are scored in all ARO domestic races from April 17 to September 25, as follows: 10 points win 5 points second 3 points third Bonus points: 2 for a Group win and 1 for a Premier Handicap will also be awarded.
Last year's other joint winner Alex Cairns has deposed Matt Johnson at the top of the table with 128, whilst Johnson now ties with Gary Capewell on120. After the HH Sheikh Zayed Cup at Sandown the table is as follows: Alex Cairns Matt Johnson Gary Capewell 2 Delyth Thomas 2 Mark Buchan 1 Delyth Thomas 1 Adam Newey Beverley Deutrom 1 Mark Buchan 2 David Paton Carol Legg Teresa Kinsey 2 Jenny Owen 2 Gary Capewell 1 Jenny Owen 1 James Owen 1 Heather Phillpott Paul Simmons John Elliot Steve Blackwell Beverley Deutrom 2 James Owen 2 Teresa Kinsey 1 Alex Banks

PATIENCE REWARDED Trainer Peter Hammersley discusses his new set up, his first experiences of racehorse breeding and that all important first Dubai International Arabian Races winner - Zayin Zachilles
Pete Hamersley with Aurora Forta (AE) at Newbury
Pete Hammersley started last season with three winners from four runners at the opening meeting. He ended it lying second to Gill Duffield in the ARO Trainers Championship for races won. In many ways 2015 was a landmark year as his owner profile had progressed to include those from the Gulf for the first time in Athbah Stud and Forta Stud. Though his slow start to the 2016 season was well publicised, relocating and being blighted by a virus were to blame. Nonetheless he got off the mark in June with a repeat win in the Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) juvenile prep race and went on to
achieve a much valued win on DIAR itself with yard favourite, Zayin Zachilles. It had been clear for some time that his existing facilities in Hurley, Warwickshire were no longer sufficient, however loyalty to his existing staff meant that moving too far away was not an option. When he heard that friend and thoroughbred trainer Chris Kellett was relocating, he jumped at the chance to rent the yard. Jubilee Racing Stables was just down the road in Appleby Magna, Derbyshire and the string moved in on 1st of March.
THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
73
Hammersley also has accommodation on the yard, which has clearly revolutionised his life, being able to be near his horses at all times. At the peak of this season he had 19 horses in training, plus a further 6 out of training including broodmares and youngstock. Currently the yard has 21 boxes, though there is scope for more. He explains. “We have a five furlong sand and wood chip gallop, plus a mile round dirt track with a chute and a grass gallop too. There is a set of three bay starting stalls and we have planning in for a horse walker. That is the one thing we’ve missed since moving here, though that should be in place for next season. There is a 50m x 40m school, plus there’s an equine pool just ten minutes down the road. “I’ve never used one before, but it’s been very useful to have the pool, without it Radical wouldn’t have got to DIAR, and we’ve had one with sore shins who we’ve been able to keep going. We also have a weighbridge, which I use all the time. It’s a great help as you don’t always realise if
they’ve lost or put on weight until it’s too late, so we can alter the work or feed accordingly.” DIAR is the flagship event for Arabian racing in the UK and since Hammersley had been training with ARO, since his first runners in 2012, there was no success until this year. “Aurora Forta was second in the Juvenile Group 2 race in 2014 which was our previous best.” He confirmed. “We’ve also had the winner of the prep race for it, for the last two years. I felt a lot of pressure last year with Cheikh Roque for Athbah Stud, but actually on the day it was ok, he finished third. This year was a bit disappointing, as our prep winner, Khattaf Athbah finished just behind Kamel Athbah in midfield. However the ground was a lot quicker, our two are good horses and they couldn’t go with the Italian horse at all. He was very good, very professional. You try and get your horse ready to do well, but maybe they peak too soon, getting them ready for that warm up race.

Paul Simmons hugs groom Fiona Wakefield as Zayin Zachilles (GB) returns from his DIAR Handicap win under Harry Bentley
“This year was different with the increase in foreign runners and the three-year-old race standard was very high –in general the International races were better supported, particularly the Conditions race. One year there were 33 entered and only 3 declared.” He recalled.
Then a foal was born and it was Zayin Zachilles. I looked at him and thought I must be doing something right because that’s a really nice foal, in fact, that’s the best foal I’ve bred. The success started when I gave up trying to work full time and train alongside, you can’t do it.”
With previous near misses for Forta and Athbah, the much longed for DIAR victory finally came in the last race of the day - the National Academy of Indian Payroll Handicap Stakes. Frequently a cavalry charge with the maximum number of runners, it is aimed at supporting the grassroots of the sport. Fittingly that success came with Zayin Zachilles, for UK ownerbreeder Paul Simmons, whose quest for a win at this meeting has spanned 18 years.
Simmons then closed his stud, cut down on numbers, sold some of the horses and put a few in training, with the rest going to his parents’ farm in Exmoor. He continues. “For me Zachilles is very important, he was born a week after my first nephew, Tommy, who he is named after. He came at that moment when I doubted my horses and myself as a breeder. As soon as I saw him I thought straight away, I’m not gelding that, he’s special.”
Zayin Zachilles had been born at a pivotal moment in Simmons life, despite being a passionate advocate of the true DIY amateur, owning, training and riding your own horse, he explained. “It was the darkest year – everything went wrong.
‘Tommy’ is obviously special to all at Jubilee Stables and his charismatic reach extends to being an artists’ muse, having been depicted by three different equestrian artists – none of which were commissions.
THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
75
Hammersley continues. “It was a dream come true for Paul and a sense of relief for me. So nice for it to be Tommy, as he’s quite a character. He’s very popular with everyone on the yard and of course he’s Fiona’s favourite (Wakefield, his groom). He’s very photogenic too.”
before.”
“It was a brilliant moment. That it should go to plan. I quite fancied all of my runners in that race. We’ve always campaigned Tommy fairly, as Paul wants to run his horses in every race that they can run in. I said to Paul at the end of last season after he’d been fifth in that race, that a lot of these runners are laid out for DIAR – so we can choose to do that, get him on the right mark and save him, or campaign like you want to and try and win every race. The problem with setting them up for just one race is that other people have the same plan and things can go wrong in the race or in the prep and then it’s all gone. So that’s what we did. It was no more of an aim than
Having been confined to amateur jockeys for a period, both owner and trainer welcomed the race being reopened to professional jockeys, though it was not without its drawbacks. Simmons, collecting Harry Bentleys’ saddle to tack up, was convinced their chance was gone, thinking his horse would never carry so much lead.
Hammersley trained the third and fourth as well, also for owner-breeders in Heather Phillpott and Forta Stud, though suffered the agony of his fourth runner, Radical, returning with a career ending injury.
Bentley said of the win. “I was very conscious that I had a lot of weight, 10-5 is the heaviest I’ve ever done in a race, but he travelled very well for me. I was told to hold on as long as I could, we’ve got there in the last furlong and he’s won with a bit in hand in the end.”
A proud moment for all the team THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
76
The enigmatic Amyzing Zayin (GB) gives Steve Harrison his 100th winner at Hereford last year
Hammersley explained. “Once it was reopened to professionals, we wanted the best rider we could get, Harry was available, so we booked him. Personally, I’m happy for all the races to be open to them. I went through a stage of thinking that we were better off using someone who rides them regularly and it ‘means something’ to them. This year every single professional I’ve used, has given the horse a proper ride and has taken it seriously. Now whether that’s because I have more horses and a higher profile, or the value of the big races and the presence in the Racing Post now, I don’t know. “If it had been limited to ARO jockeys, then of course that would have been fine, but it seems pointless standing your ground, because other trainers will use pros and the ride Harry gave him was brilliant. He’d never ridden him before, we told him he’d travel really well and to hang on until the last furlong and he did it to the
letter – it may not be a high pressure race for Harry, but it means a lot to the connections. Whilst it may be classed as an amateur sport, it is still a luxury, so you need to feel you are getting the best for your money.” Hammersley also supported his amateur jockeys Stephen Harrison and Stefania Gandola with rides in the race and he credits Harrison for his return to Arabian racing, having had a few years away from the sport. It was also on one of Simmons’ homebreds that Harrison reached his landmark of 100 winners under ARO rules last season, Amyzing Zayin. Of Harrison he says. “Steve’s been brilliant, he has so much input into each of the horses, when he gets off a horse at the end of a race he can tell me so much about it. The ride he gave Paul’s Kallista (to win in July) was fantastic, no one else could have won on her.”
THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
77
Simmons is also full of praise for Harrison commenting. “You need a good jockey, as they need to help the horse, which is difficult when they are equally inexperienced. That’s a bad combination and is a poor experience for the horse. "I have given jockeys their first rides in the past and though I like to support amateur jockeys, you do need to be very careful. Steve has been my first choice jockey for a number of years and Amy (Amyzing Zayin) giving him his 100th winner, that was a really special win too.” Since giving up training himself, Simmons had used a number of trainers, joining up with Hammersley towards the end of 2011. Hammersley recalls. “Paul sent me the mares, Amyzing Zayin and Samauring Zayin to start with. He’s been a great
owner. We’re honest with each other and it’s suited him. We’ve had five in for him this year, Zayin Zachilles, his half brother Zayin Zodiac, Zayin Indian Fuego, Samauring Zayin, who had had a career break as a broodmare and of course Kallista, who he bought.” “We had Tommy in as a three year old and he’s been a dream from day one, easy to break, no problems with him at all. He’s sound, his conformation is fantastic and of course he’s very consistent. He’s enthusiastic in his work at home, so we don’t have to force him to do anything. It’s great for him to still be improving now at the age of seven. He’s a lot like his sire, Kaolino. It doesn’t seem to matter what distance, 7f to 1m6f, he travels so well."
Zayin Zachilles (GB) who will be available for AI to ARO breeders at a reduced fee in 2017 THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
78
Of his half brother Zayin Zodiac by Dahess, Hammersley says. “No, they’re not that similar, as they are by different sires, and they were trained differently as they had different goals. Zayin Zodiac was trained with the Derby in mind and he progressed a lot quicker, but maybe he’s paying for it now. The leap from 75 to 90 after his fourth in the ARO Cup, a Group 3, seemed steep, but on the books I suppose he deserved that. He needs some easier races now to make sure he doesn’t go sour and he’s still got a lot of strengthening up to do.” The shortage of Arabians for racing in the UK is well documented and Hammersley has also joined the breeding ranks. His own mare Kateland (by Vert Olive), has produced a strapping yearling colt by Shadwell’s multiple Kahayla Classic and Group 1 winner, Madjani. Born on the Summer Solstice he’s named Stonehenge. He also has a half share in Al Tabari, a colt foal by multiple Group 1 winner Tabarak
out of Altesse Kossack (by Marwan I) who he trained for Rick Gould. Of that breeding he explained. “Rick and his partner Julie were at Doncaster when Tabarak won the Group 1 Qatar Harwood International Stakes, as I had Hidalgo for Julie in the race as well. Altesse Kossack has won the HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies race that year and they were planning to use some of the prize money to breed from her. When Julie saw Tabarak win – it was no contest.” Hammersley would like to breed more, aiming to purchase an older broodmare with good lines and then hoping for a filly. He also praised the Shadwell team saying. “They have been brilliant, their terms are great, so it does make it very easy and I would use them again. Michelle, my wife, has never been that involved with the racing, but she has been a lot more interested in the breeding and has been very hands on with the foals. The AI procedure can be a bit stressful, though it is helpful because of the choice.”
Hammersley with Al Tabari (GB) 2016 colt by Tabarak x altesse Kossack THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE
79
Simmons who now has considerable experience as a breeder says of AI. “I don’t think it is so great, but there are so few good stallions available via natural cover for breeders in the UK, though Shadwell’s Al Jakbar has certainly done well this season. People are often very unaware of what goes into producing a foal and the costs involved. It can be really hard, with fertility issues, boarding, vets fees and so on, before you even consider the cost of the stud fee. It is not an easy thing. “However Zayin Zachilles will be available at stud next year for AI, and I will be giving discount to ARO members to help encourage more breeding.” Clearly both Simmons and Hammersley have an eye to the future investing in their own bloodstock, though Simmons explains. “We do need an injection of
horses, but it requires some of the larger owners to sell off their less talented horses like they used to at Ascot. I understand that they don’t want to be beaten by their exhorses, but people are desperate for stock. The only option is to breed and whilst there are more people breeding this year, it takes time.” From his trainers’ viewpoint, Hammersley considers the current situation. “More days like the opening meeting at Chelmsford when we had over a 1000 people watching will help, rather than Hereford where the turnout is much lower.” Of the standard of the racing he says. “I’ve nothing against the low grade races, as long as it’s a close race that’s good enough, but it’s in the maiden races where the difference in the quality of horse comes into focus. So that is something that needs to be considered.”

Bluebery Hipolyte (FR) and Stef Gandola on their first outing at Chelmsford
He is also attracting new owners to the sport, including those who have become disenchanted with thoroughbred racing saying. “We met Jon Richardson through Stef and he bought Bluebery Hipolyte. Jon’s obviously loving it and it’s great he can pop in and get involved.” Richardson, who is self employed and has the freedom to visit to see his horse work on a regular basis enthuses. “I had previously shared in thoroughbreds, but the whole Arabian racing scene is so friendly. Bluebery was already with Pete, he had previously been aimed at Endurance, but didn’t make the grade and it was a good opportunity for me to try Arabian racing. “The thoroughbreds I was involved with were mostly on the flat, a couple were with Richard Fahey. They did well, but it was shared ownership, with Pete I can come to the yard regularly and feel part of things there. Though I think you have to be realistic, so long as he runs to the best of
his ability, it’s really all I’m after.' Richardson had not been to DIAR before, as he is new to Arabian racing this season, he said, “I’ve been to Royal Ascot and I suppose it is the Ascot of the Arabian world. Having been to Chelmsford and Newbury so far, I’ve been impressed by the very good public support at those meetings and I’m hoping to have another horse next year.” Despite Richardson’s case for sole ownership, Hammersley does feel that there is scope for syndication in Arabian racing saying. “I think it will be the way to go, to broaden the involvement. There are so many different ways to run them, to make it fun and to involve people. The catchment area here is good with Nuneaton, Tamworth, Coventry, Leicester and Derby all within 20 miles of the yard. It’s just getting the horses in the first place, that’s the problem.” www.zayinarabians.co.uk
