ARO CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE DECIDED AT CHELMSFORD The UK Arabian Racing Organsation season will draw to a close on Sunday 25 September, where it opened back in April - Chelmsford City Racecourse in Essex. Whilst another Owners Championship is assured for ARO Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the remaining titles will be a close run affair promising to bring the season to a dramatic close. Currently heading the Trainers Championship table is James Owen on 13, however Philip Collington is only three behind and his 13 seconds to Owen's 8, could clinch it, if it went to a tie.

The overall Jockey Championship is closer with multiple ARO Champion Simon Walker on 13 and last years' Novice title holder Will Pettis on 11. Joanna Mason is two clear of her nearest rival Antonia Peck in the Lady Jockey Championship, whilst Tadhg O'Shea is already confirmed as top professional jockey with four wins. The Novice title is also a close call between Charlie Price on 4 and Malcolm Mallow on 3. Declarations for the nine race card are due on Wednesday 21 September at 11am.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE UAE CUP

(UK Arabian Derby) Group 1 PA Doncaster

Karin Van Den Bos 's Lightning Bolt (FR) wins The President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby) Group 1 PA, under Adrie De Vries, from Tayf (FR) (nearest camera) and Khataab (FR) (just seen)

In a dramatic end to The President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby) Group 1 PA at Doncaster, Lightning Bolt got up by a head to beat favourite Tayf in a photo finish for the £80,000 race. Karin Van Den Bos’s homebred made a last minute surge under strong driving from Adrie De Vries to catch Tayf who began to idle once he struck the front. This left Khataab to fill the frame behind Tayf, confirming the form of the French equivalent. The early pace was set by Dossar

Athbah on the rail, with Al Raha fighting for her head and running wide on his outside. The favourite, Lightning Bolt, travelled smoothly and was soon prominent in the hands of De Vries. Tayf, who was also strongly fancied, was held up in the rear. As they straightened up to head for home it was clear that Dossar Athbah had no more to give under strong pressure from Tadhg O'Shea and Lightning Bolt soon headed the pack.

Khataab was close in behind the leader, with Jamaayil being brought to challenge on the outside under Paul Hanagan. Tayf had moved to a more prominent position for Peslier but was still two lengths off the leading trio with less than two furlongs to run. However despite moving easily into the lead as they reached the last half furlong, Tayf idled as soon as he hit the front and started to pull himself up before he reached the line. This gave the advantage to Lightning Bolt who was staying on srongly for De Vries. Van den Bos's colt surged between horses to win by a length right on the line, with Khataab a close third on the rail.

“He’s a nice horse and he kept giving me everything.” commented De Vries after the race. “When Olivier past me, I thought he had won, as he past me so easily, but of course Arabians, they never want to be in front for too long and I saw his horse trying to stop. So I gave my horse a reminder and he kept going; it was a nice surprise to win.” Van Den Bos was delighted with her colt’s performance saying. “I know I can count on Adrie, he’s a great rider. He saw an opportunity and he took it. So now I know Lightning Bolt can fight back. That will be it for this season as he is only four years old and he needs more time.”

Tayf (FR) pricks his ears as he hits the front, idling and eventually hands the race to Lightning Bolt (FR) (centre) with Khataab (FR) taking a close third on the rail THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Faisal Al Rahmani, General Secretary for the President of the UAE Cup Program commented. “It is the first year of sponsorship of The President of the UAE Cup for the Abu Dhabi Sports Council. I already know England very well, and that Doncaster is an historic racecourse and the St Leger Festival meeting is very good. We are looking forward to returning to England with the series next year, when it will be bigger and better. The series now goes to America, to Churchill Downs and then on to Morocco, where we will race in front of His Majesty the King.” He continued. “The President of the UAE Cup is actually the oldest series of races for Purebred Arabians in the world. It was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to promote and celebrate the Arabian

horse and its’ significant place in UAE culture and history. With the help of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, we wish to raise the profile of the series to a new level in the future.” ARO Racing Manager, Amanda Smith commented. “This is final Group race of the ARO season and it will be interesting to see how the first three home progress, as the race often produces future champions.” Arabian Racing Organisation Director Director Genny Haynes was pleased with the days’ events saying. “It is a great pleasure to welcome back the President of the UAE Cup to UK Arabian racing. ARO are extremely grateful to the Abu Dhabi Sports Council for their generous support of the UK Arabian Derby and we look

forward to continuing the relationship for many years to come. QATAR CUP - PRIX DRAGON Group 1 PA

Chantilly, France

Al Mourtajez (FR) and Julien Auge stride out to post prior to winning the Qatar International Stakes Gr1PA at Goodwood in August

Qatar Cup - Prix Dragon Gr1PA 2000m The long established Arc Trails Day is no less important for Arabians as for their Thoroughbred counterparts, as it features the Prix Dragon, now known as the Qatar Cup. This year it holds extra significance with the Qatar Arabian World Cup being held, like the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly, whilst building works continue at Longchamp. It was no surprise to see the world's

top-rated Arabian, Al Mourtajez, continue his domination with an uncontested seven length victory from the Alban de Mieulle trained pair of Majeed and TM Thunder Struck for HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani. Al Mourtajez was quickly away, racing on the outside of Samima, with Majeed in behind on the rail, who was joined by his stablemate TM Thunderstruck. Always travelling well within himself, when Julien Auge asked his mount for more, he quickly asserted in the home straight to draw clear. Majeed held off

the brief challenge of TM Thunder Struck in second, whilst Samima had already faded to fourth, and was passed by a fast finishing Valentin in the final half furlong.

long for him. I don’t think that they will run in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, as they won’t have a chance of winning. But we have to enjoy watching a horse like Al Mourtajez give such performances. He is a great advertisement for Arabian racing.” The Qatar Arabian World Cup is the the second leg of the Doha Triple Crown Series, with Al Mourtajez already having won the first stage, the Qatar International Stakes Gr1PA at Goodwood in July, he looks a strong contender to be the series first ever winner and claim the $1million bonus.

After the race trainer Thomas Fourcy said. “I'm not sure he has three or four gears more than the others, but he is above the norm. I am not the right person to say who could beat him in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, but the way that he is running at the moment, I don't see how he can be beaten, unless the race has no pace like last year. The horse is a lot more relaxed this year, as he had a tendency to be very keen and use up a lot of gas during the race. Last year, he was ill, and we have looked after him this year, so that we don't make the same mistakes. He is fit and in form, and we just need to keep him there. He has a green light.”

At the first entry stage there were 22 entries, headed by Al Mourtajez on ratings. Other entries include Group 1 winners Sir Bani Yas and Handassa and also Gazwan who defeated him in the HH Emir's Sword Gr1PA in February, which is the final leg of the Doha Triple Crown. The supplementary stage is on 28 September, with declarations due two days later for the race on 2 October.

Alban de Mieulle, trainer of Majeed and TM Thunder Struck commented. “The winner is unbeatable. He is an exceptional horse. Neither of my horses have his class. Majeed is an honest horse and did what he could. TM Thunder Struck pulled a little, but I think the 2000m at Chantilly is too THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Handassa (FR)

International IFAHR Trophy Gr2 PA 2100m Polytrack HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's homebred Handassa recorded back to back victories in the International IFAHR Trophy at the Velifendi track. The striking son of Madjani burst through horses in the home straight to power clear from Merih for a comfortable win. Fellow French Challenger Vulcain Du Clos for the Royal Cavalry of Oman ran on for third. This was the first run for Handassa

since he finished fourth in the Dubai Kahayla Classic at Meydan, having had a well earned break. He currently holds entries in the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Chantilly and the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge Classic at Toulouse at the begininng and end of October respectively. Vulcain Du Clos has a good record at the Festival, having been placed for the last two years in the Group 1 Malazgirt Trophy on Turf.

International Malazgirt Trophy Gr1 PA 1600m Turf The International Malazgirt Trophy produced a one-two for Turkish runners Gumburgumbur and Uluer. Kao Kat MHF, trained in Britain by Beverley Deutrom, was a brave third having been unlucky in running and was staying on well at the finish, nearly gaining second place on the line. All the more remarkable was the fact the the son of Kaolino had had secumbed to illness as his trainer Beverley Deutrom explained."It was very challenging, but a really enjoyable trip. The horse was amazing, he had got a little bit sick, whether that was from the flight or whatever I don't know. However he recieved fantastic vetinary care and twenty-four-seven they were there when we needed them, so it couldn't have been better.

"I would never ever run my horse if I didn't think he was fit to run so of course it was in my mind that I might have to withdraw. The night before the race he was full of life and I felt confident that there were no issues. He flew out on the Tuesday and the race was on the Sunday so we had time to acclimatise, though probably not quite as much time as we would have liked." She continued."He has improved incredibly well, maturity makes such a difference, peole don't seem to realise how long they can take to come into themsleves. He's a very genuine horse and I think he was just really unlucky, he got boxed in and the gap opened at the very last minute, another 50 yards and who knows. He will be nominated for the Jewel Crown in Abu Dhabi in November."

Luck was on the 21-year-olds side as Amanta, the horse that Goudman was due to ride got injured, and she was given the reserve runner Katrusia, winning plemty in hand from the rest of the field. At one stage, Goudman and Katrusya were over 20 lengths ahead, however she eased up and still won the 20,000 Euros race comfortably.

Ms. Lara Sawaya welcomed the excellent atmosphere at the Kazan racecourse and said, “We are happy to come back and stage this race for the second successive year. James Owen who trained the winner on behalf of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, was pleased with the result saying. “It was a really good performance. Unfortunately Evin couldn’t speak any English, and I think this was his first time on an Arabian, however he got on great with him. The horse travelled really well and ran all the way to the line for him.” The HH Sheikha Fatima Apprentice World Championship (IFAHR) is an innovative contest aimed at giving young riders the chance to experience racing worldwide on Purebred Arabian horses. Having held stages in Italy, Denmark, Poland and Russia, the next stage will be in Tarbes, France before the final in November. Prior to that race meeting, there is a three day conference for education and training, also supported by the Festival. The HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival also supports the

International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA) which draws together all the racing schools around the world in order to share their knowledge for the benefit of young riders. This year they inaugurated the Racing Scholarship Fund, helping the best racing school students worldwide progress their careers. One of the first recipients selected, was UK Champion Apprentice Tom Marquand; supporting him in six weeks work experience in Australia at the start of the year. ARO Racing Manager, Amanda Smith commented. “The race produced a really exciting finish and will be a memorable experience for Evin Roman. HE Al Mazroui said, “Today’s large crowd watched and enjoyed the Apprentice jockeys racing on Purebred Arabians. The British know their horse racing and every event of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival have been fully appreciated by all those involved in promoting lady jockeys, Apprentice jockeys and Purebred Arabian racing.” Ms Sawaya hailed the debut of an Apprentice jockey from Jordan in the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival. “We will be inviting Milly Naseb to the final of the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship in Abu Dhabi on November 13. Today’s race is evidence of the promise that the jockeys of the future possess. There is one more race in this series to be held in Tarbes, France next month,” she said.

HEREFORD CHAMPIONSHIPS DEFINED The Arabian Racing Organisation's final HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nayhan Festival meeting at Hereford in 2016

Naishaan (FR) and Joanna Mason impress in the first

The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) paid its final visit to Hereford racecourse in 2016 for the last of four full fixtures sponsored by the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival in the UK. The well supported card produced some very competitive racing which has helped define the 2016 Championship Title picture, with two single races and one full fixture to go before the end of the season. HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum looks set to record another

owner’s title, but following the retirement of his principal trainer, Gill Duffield last year, there will be a new ARO Champion Trainer. Currently clear is James Owen, one of two trainers for His Highness. Naishaan’s win in the first race has helped to secure this position and he looks forward to the last few races with competitive enthusiasm. He said “We’re looking forward to Chelmsford City, however we have a few runners in the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Apprentice race first.”

No less enthusiastic is Joanna Mason, who rode Naishaan. She is currently leading the Lady Jockeys Championship with four winners. She commented. “Hopefully I will be riding at Chelmsford. James asked me to go in and ride Naishaan in her work, which paid off as she’s quite tricky at home, but she won nicely for me today. I really appreciate all the rides the trainers have given me this season which has put me in with a chance of my first ARO Championship title.” Naishaan's three length victory from two of HH Sheikh Hamdan's other runners Alrazeen and Alwaleed was also significant as she provided her sire, No Risk Al Maury with his first UK winner. The Champion racehorse had made a winning debut at the very same track back in 2006 under Philip Collington. No Risk Al Mauray was

never out of the first two in all his UK starts and won six Group 1 PA races around the globe. Rated128 when international classifications began in 2011, he has made a fine start at stud with his first runners worldwide. There were a number of close finishes including a dead heat between Aurora Forta and Shaama in the Wathba Stud Farm Cup Restricted Maiden. The two mares duelled up the home straight and finished eight lengths clear of Drake De Palmas in third. Delyth Thomas’s Kayclaire won the Wathba Stud Farm Cup (0-55) Handicap by a head after the judges called another photo finish. Ridden by Simon Walker, who is clear of his nearest challenger in the male Jockeys Championship, Will Pettis, who rode the eventual second, Zayin Zamurai.

Parma T (NL) and Morgan Winstone

Recording a very well deserved first win was trainer Christopher Bull and jockey Morgan Winstone with the Dutch bred mare, Parma T. A winner in Holland, she had raced for Stewart Shefras last season, but has been consistently making the frame in all her races since moving to Bull’s yard. He said. “This is my first Arabian, she’s the only horse we’ve got. She works on her own, though we’re very lucky to have the use of Dai Burchell’s gallops. I started off pony racing on the Welsh circuit a long time ago now and I got into Arabian racing through Paul Beard and Delyth Thomas.” Jockey Winstone was clearly delighted with his first ARO win saying. “So far I’ve only ridden for Chris but I’m looking to get rides for other people too. I’m based in Pontypool and ride out for Thoroughbred trainer, Robert

Stevens and I’ll be taking out a pointto-point license this winter.” There were also wins for fellow novices, Charlie Price and Malcolm Mallow . Mallow was recording his second win at the course on Trip To Khairo, who formed part of a memorable first double at the track earlier in the month. Price, was recording his first victory for James Owen and HH Sheikh Hamdan said. " That was good. I rode him last time, when he was fifth here, but he just pulled too hard in the early stages. Today he settled much better for the eye sheild and ear plugs. He's been working well in them at home. I work for [Thoroughbed trainer] Tim Vaughan and I'm just waiting to get my first ride as an amateur under rules."

Simon Walker delighted with his win on Kayclaire (GB)

This was the last full fixture for the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival in the UK, Amanda Smith ARO Racing Manager, commented. “We have had a brilliant year’s racing with the Festival at Hereford and today’s racing has been no less competitive. It was great to see Parma T finally get her head in front in the UK and I hope she can progress from here. It was also good to see three novice jockeys, Morgan Winstone, Malcolm Mallow and Charlie Price win today and ARO is delighted to be able to help advance their careers in horseracing."

TERENCE GILBERT SEA at the Osborne Studio Gallery

Longchamp

A light hearted look at the racecourse with Terence Gilbert SEA. Gilbert’s father worked at the National Gallery and, as twelve year old lad, he was granted special permission to copy Old Masters and study their techniques. After formal training at Camberwell School of Art, he worked as a freelance illustrator, producing film posters, advertisements for airlines

and tyre companies, also many book covers, with a skill and panache worthy of the finest American graphic artists. An art critic writes : ‘His knowledge of structure and anatomy has enabled him to portray the bodily tension of a sporting or theatrical moment: the leap of a ballet dancer, a jockey’s balance on a race horse.’

Private collectors bought originals of his book covers, depicting horses and riders against the sublime landscape of the American West. They were also selected for display at the Museum of Western Art in Colorado. In the seventies he painted the National Guard of Saudi Arabia and HH Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum. Notable collectors and commissions include HH Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi, HH Sheikh Khalifa al Thani, The Emir of Qatar, The Emir of Bahrain and HM The Sultan of Oman. In the nineties Terence moved on to other high profile equestrian subjects: retired Masters of Foxhounds, Derby winners; Yeats, four times winner of

the Ascot Gold Cup, and HM The Queen’s visit to Coolmore Stud. He has exhibited in the United States, Saudi Arabia, Oman, at the Royal College of Art, with the Society of Equestrian Artists, and The Royal Academy Touring Exhibition in Dubai. In 2014 he won the Prize for the Best Arabian work, sponsored by The Arabian Magazine at the Society of Equestrian Artists Annual Open Exhibtion 'The Horse in Art'at the Mall Galleries in London.

SUPER For 2016, the initial teams were required to include a minimum of two four year olds, no unraced horses and two overseas trained horses were permitted, with the horses selected from the ARO list of registered runners. A number of teams included the following horses who did not qualify under those criteria: Alhaader, Dossar Athbah, Elyassat, Fatinah, Hau Kola, Istiqlaal, Jamaayil and Yeskan Du Cayrou. Any points scored by these horses did not qualify during the period 17 April - 29 May. After the seven day transfer window (after Taunton on 22 May) most of those horses were then qualified as they had run at least once in that period - only Dossah Athbah and Istiqlaal remain not qualified after 29 May. In the event of a tie at the end of the season, the number of fully qualified runners from the start of the competition will be taken into account. Points are scored in all ARO domestic races from April 17 to September 25, as follows: 10 points win 5 points second 3 points third Bonus points: 2 for a Group win and 1 for a Premier Handicap will also be awarded.

Last year's joint winners Alex Cairns and Matt Johnson are still at the top of the table with 138 and 135 respectively. After the HH Sheikh Fatima bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship (IFAHR) race at Lingfield the table is as follows: Alex Cairns Matt Johnson Delyth Thomas 2 Gary Capewell 2 Mark Buchan 1 Jenny Owen 1 Delyth Thomas 1 James Owen 1 Jenny Owen 2 Mark Buchan 2 Carol Legg Beverley Deutrom 1 Adam Newey Teresa Kinsey 2 Gary Capewell 1 David Paton Paul Simmons John Elliot James Owen 2 Beverley Deutrom 2 Steve Blackwell Heather Phillpott Alex Banks Teresa Kinsey 1
