NEWS ARO WELCOMES SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN ENTRIES FOR THE OPENING FIXTURE Following the close of entries at noon on April 26 for the seasons’ opening fixture at Wolverhampton on May 7, the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) welcomed the rise in entries on last year. With 79 individual horses making up the 90 entries across the eight-race card, this was a significant increase on the opening meeting in 2016 which received only 54 entries for Purebred Arabians. Pre-season registrations were also up, at 114 horses this is another significant increase on last years’ total of 72. ARO Racing Operations Executive Gemma Cobb was delighted to

confirm the news saying: “ARO welcomes this increase and the continued support of all the participants in UK Arabian racing. We are particularly pleased by the number of unraced three and four year olds registered, which shows our efforts to rebuild the domestic Arabian racehorse population via the breeders’ scheme and other incentives are now beginning to take effect.” Click on the link below to see the entries, declarations, results, photos and videos throughout the season:

In addition two further full fixtures at Chelmsford will be sponsored by the HH Sheikh Mansoor Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, confirmed as Saturday July 15 and Saturday September 16. DUBAI KAHAYLA CLASSIC Gr.1 Meydan, Dubai

Harry Bentley smiles as trianer Julian Smart celebrates with Reda (QA) The UAE racing season for both Arabians and Thoroughbreds closes on Dubai World Cup night at Meydan - the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic being the most coveted prize for Arabians. Always a hotly contested race, this years' event had added drama with the forecast heavy rain arriving overnight and the track being subjected to a number of pre-race inspections, before the meeting was given the go-ahead.

Depsite the unusual weather conditions, there was a strong line up for the race with the 2016 winner and runner up in AF Mathmoon and TM Thunder Struck renewing their rivalry. In addition there was RB Burn, winner of two Group 1's in Jewel Crown and the Liwa Oasis, plus Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 winner Faucon Du Loup and Round 3 winner Handassa.

18 As the gates opened soon leading the field was AF Mathmoon and Jim Crowley, with Loraa, TM Thunder Struck, AF Al Hazer and RB Madymoiselle close in behind as they entered the first bend. By halfway AF Mathmoon was still out in front, though RB Burn and Handassa had both made steady progress to be closer to the pace. Entering the home straight Gerald Avranche made his move on RB Burn, quickly passing Loraa who was fading fast and TM Thunder Struck whose speed was blunted by the muddy conditions. With less than 500m to go RB Burn hit the front and soon pulled clear of AF Mathmoon who had nothing left to give and TM Thunder Struck who kept on gamely. However coming wide and closing fast was Reda and Harry Bentley who stole the race from RB Burn inside the

final 200 metres and ran on for a two and a half length victory. Sniper De Monlau stayed on for third with Handassa finishing fourth for a second year running. This was a remarkable performance from the five year old son of Burning Sand, who fell out of the gates and had to be ridden virgously in the early stages by Bentley to keep in touch. Though Reda had little luck in five previous attempts at Group level, he had gone into the race on the back of a win - his first attempt on dirt. After the race Bentley said:" I never expected him to win, I said to someone earlier to day I would be happy if we just made the frame. He was a nice horse last year in Qatar and for me he then went backwards slightly during the summer. He's a big sort and still young for an Arabian, but he's maturing now and today was fantastic."

Smart and Bentley await the winners presentation

Bentley continued saying. “For him the track was ideal. It's riding slow with loads of kickback. We've had the first two races now and in both the winners have come from off the pace - it wasn't really the plan as I wanted to be handy." Trainer Julian Smart was clearly delighted with the colts' performance, shouting at the crowd in the winners circle to give his horse a cheer. Afterwards he commented:" I've won this race with three different horses, Nez D'Or, Jaafer and now Reda, which is a first ." [The previous three-time winners were with the same horse, Alanudd for Yancey Carter and Gill Duffield with Madjani].

He continued: "I don't think you can put him in the great bracket. He is a good horse, but it's a different surface, so maybe he is a world beater on dirt. "This season he was sixth, beaten less than three lengths in the Qatar Derby by Tayf, Tayf was second in the French Derby and the Emir's Sword, so Reda's form is good, but is he as good as Tayf or Ebraz? No. But he's not far off them, so it shows you how good they are. "He's rated 113 and he's a good 113, he's beaten horses rated 120 plus here, so maybe that's not a fair reflection of their actual rating. What happens to this horse now, does he go to 120? He doesn't deserve that rating back in Doha."

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

22

Harry Bentley, Reda(QA)

That Reda's performance came as somewhat of a surprise to his trainer was shown in Smart's reponse when questioned on the horses' subsequent programme, saying:"I never even thought past today for him. I would still tell the boss to give him a break now. "He's a big horse, he's only five, we've found his niche, and so I'll ask the boss if we can come back for Maktoum Challenges and races like that, why not? I actually think he might be a better horse over a mile, because he's got that Burning Sand speed in there. "Let's not get excited, lets see what happens, but for me, Europe is off the cards, purely because I have horses like Gazwan and Ebraz that are better."

Confirming that his two Emir's Sword

winners will return to Europe, Smart said:"Ebraz will attempt the [Doha] Triple

Crown because the mile should be ok for him, but there are some some good horses out there at the moment in Europe and some new ones coming along that I've heard of."

Smart had used Reda as a pacemaker last season and when asked about the horses' transformation to Group 1 winner he said: "I used him in France as a pacemaker for Gazwan, as the way they run in France doesn't suit Gazwan at all and this horse was completely off the boil - as we saw at Newbury - so I then decided he could be a pacemaker for the two races I needed him for, get him back to Doha and then fix him."

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

23

He continued: "We've had a chiropractor

producing good horses as well.

come all throughout the season, she's worked on this horse, Ebraz and Gazwan and this is her favourite horse, so she's done a great job. She's seen him twice since we've been here and she's been very happy with him.

"This guy is unknown, obviously he handles the dirt, so he might become a name that people will know, but as far as the other horses he's not Jaafer that's for sure. "

"If I don't over train him [Reda], I'd like to come back for this one next year, like I said he's only five, they keep going; six, seven, they just get better and Harry was very happy with the way he faced everything."

When asked about Qatar's last big meeting of their season Smart said:"I would love for him not to run, there's the Qatar Gold Sword in a few weeks time and that's an awful lot for him. He's won the Kahayla and I'd like to think the boss will give him a break and I think he will.

Speaking of his two previous Kahayla Classic winners Smart dismissed any comparison saying: "You can't compare him with my other winners. Nez d'Or was my first one and he was a great horse -of his era - how he would go now I don't really know and Jaafer was just brilliant. Jaafer was a superstar and he's now

"We've had such a bad season and to win the Emir's Sword and the Kahayla in the space of a few weeks - that's really lifted us through the roof now. I'm not going to push a horse like him just because we want to win this particular race, we'll try it with something else."

GOLD SWORD Gr.1 Doha, Qatar

Gazwan (GB) and Richie Mullen go to post for the 2016 HH Emir's Sword

The last Group 1 of the Qatar racing season was the Gold Sword won by H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Gazwan fowllowing his recent fourth place finish in H.H The Emir’s Sword in February. Julian Smart’s charge stayed in the mix behind his pacemaker Ba’sil, before the field spread across the track coming on to the business end of the race. Richard Mullen moved ahead on

Gazwan but was soon pursued by Umm Qarn’s Tayf ridden by Olivier Peslier. Gazwan held on by a neck at the post for his fourth win from five starts this season. The win was Smart’s third Group 1 victory in as many months with Ebraz winning the Emir’s Sword and Reda taking Kahayla Classic in Dubai. HH SHEIKHA FATIMA BINT MUBARAK DARLEY AWARDS STAKES Gr.1 Santa Anita, USA

2017 HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak darley Awards Stakes winners Victor Espinoza and Paddys Day (US)

Highlight of the weekend was the HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Darley Awards Stakes won by Darley Horse of the Year Paddys Day under Victor Espinoza.Just when he thought he ‘had ridden them all’, it was the first ever ride on an Arabian for the Triple Crown-winning jockey, thanks to the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival. It was a pairing of two stars-Paddys Day just after winning yet another pair

of US Darley Awards the previous night and the man with over 3200 wins –Espinoza. They obliged a ready audience as Espinoza and Paddys Day demolished their 11 other rivals in the Grade I, $100,000 HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes at Santa Anita race course. The Scott Powell-trained Paddys Day finished ahead of Easter Man under Edwin Maldonado while in third place was Sand Victor under Hugo Herrera.

“In 20 to 30 years I thought I had ridden them all but this was my first ever experience with an Arabian horse. He did not give up just like a thoroughbred horse; it was just that the pace was a bit slower,” Espinoza said. “This horse was full of run going into the far turn; we just had to find a way through. It’s an honor to be a part of this race.” It was the second running of the Grade I, $100,000 HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Darley Award Stakes and also a huge relief for trainer Scott Powell as Paddys Day was beaten by Thess Is Awesome in a shock win last year when the Arabian race made its debut at Santa Anita. “We thought we could win this race last year and we finished second, so this is really sweet. He definitely put it all together today,” said Scott who was named Best Trainer for 2016 in the

Darley US Awards held on Friday night while Paddys Day scooped the Older Horse and Horse of the Year Award for 2016. DWC winning jockey Mike Smith, along with other top jockeys received a cheque of US $ 150,000 on behalf of the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF) from the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival and Santa Anita Park in the presence of Keith Brackpool, Chairman, Santa Anita Park. “We greatly appreciate what the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival is doing for PDJF,” said Smith. Later Espinoza also hailed the move. “It’s an honor to ride this race today. The Arabian association and Santa Anita gave a big check ($150,000) to the injured riders (PDJF) earlier today, so that was great,” he said.

ARO SEASON PREVIEW The Arabian Racehorse visits the the stables and jockeys to discusses their main hopes for the forthcoming UK Arabian racing season - Part One -

James Owen and Philip Collington

spanning from 28 to 110 he has horses to win at all levels in defence of that title.

James Owen has clearly got his eye on retaining the ARO Champion Trainer title he won last season, with 25 horses in. Of those 16 are for ARO patron HH Sheikh Hamdan, the rest split between Rob Sedgely, Owen’s parents, Jean-Luc Jardel and a few of his own. Most are French bred but some are Heritage Arabian Racing Club eligible horse too and with ratings

He explains:“We’ve got plenty of horses to run, though obviously I’d like to try and win some of the bigger pots this year. Newbury [DIAR] went a bit wrong last year, I just think some of my horses weren’t quite right and maybe some of them weren’t quite good enough. This year, they’re not quite as forward, they’re probably about two or three weeks behind where they were last year.

“We’ve got plenty of horses to run, though obviously I’d like to try and win some of the bigger pots this year. Newbury [DIAR] went a bit wrong last year, I just think some of my horses weren’t quite right and maybe some of them weren’t quite good enough. This year, they’re not quite as forward, they’re probably about two or three weeks behind where they were last year. “Awzaan would be the best in the yard, there’s not that many options for him, I know he won over 1m4f last year, but that was probably a slow run race and he out speeded them at the finish. His last run was great over a mile at Sandown. We might go to Italy on May 14 for the Listed race there. There’s that prep race and then the 1m2f at Newbury which he’d go for, as for DIAR he’d probably have to the Dubai International. He improved throughout the season and he’ll always be light framed, but he’s a much stronger horse now. He

only had one run as a four year old so he learnt a lot last year. Of course there’s the HH Sheikh Zayed Cup at Chelmsford as he goes well over a mile. “Alazeez did us proud last year, won his maiden well, which probably wasn’t a bad maiden. Rated 92, he’s a stocky little horse, he hasn’t grown a great deal, but definitely mentally he’s improved and physically too. He will start off at Wolverhampton over a mile. By Madjani, he loves the all weather, though runs equally well on grass. Just shows a bit of speed, though I know his relations weren’t the speediest, we’ll learn a lot about him at Wolverhampton regarding which way to go with him. He took a while to come to hand, but he did last year too, he thrived from the prep race into Newbury [DIAR]. Ran a great race at Newbury and then won his maiden. He’ll be running against older horses at Wolverhampton so we’ll see.

“Emiraaty – we all love him, he’s in this weekend. If we go to Italy with Awzaan he might go too as he’ll always run his race. We might travel a bit with him - he goes on any ground, any distance. He’ll run in the HH Sheikha Fatima Apprentice race, he’s any easy ride, he comes out of the gates and goes forward.. “Munbaher – he’s the same, he likes the All Weather, always ran his race last year. Physically looks like he’s improved, he gets himself ready and he tries his heart out. He’ll go to the 1m2f. “Naishaan – She’s a lovely filly, I loved her last year, she didn’t like the stalls but has come round to them now. She won her maiden well at the end of the season at Hereford. She’ll run at Wolverhampton, probably in the 1m2f, she’s training great and she looks great and if that all goes well she’ll go to the DIAR Fillies and Mares prep at Chelmsford, with an eye to Newbury for the Hatta.

“Baume De Brieul – he’s training much better this year, we had him gelded after Newbury, as we always struggled to get the weight off him. He’s not the biggest, but he ran quite well at Newbury. He’s on a good mark, he’ll probably have one run, either the 2m at Doncaster or the 1m4f at Chepstow and then go straight to Newbury. He stays well. “Alhaader won his maiden well at Chelmsford and then knew what it was about at Hereford and had his mind on other things. He’s been gelded and has definitely fined down for gelding. He’s a little bit behind the others so will probably run at the next Wolverhampton [June 17]. “Eqleeem ran once at the back end last year, he’s a big raw horse he’s still taking a little bit of time to come to hand he will run this weekend, probably need the experience again, but he’s quite nice.

Alazeez (GB) and Antonia Peck

“Rob Sedgely’s Pogrebok – he was a shell of a horse last year and physically he’s done great over the winter. He’s fairly ready, he’ll go to Wolverhampton. I think he’ll stay well. He’s a big horse now.” Of the HARC horses, Owen says: “Insignia - he’s ok, he might find a race somewhere this season, Istfamouze the same, hopefully this weekend.” Owen also has a selection of raced and unraced new horses in the yard: “ For His Highness there’s Tatbeeq, who is Zaahy’s half brother by Madjani, he might go for the Newbury prep. “Al Faaris was in training with Damien de Watrigant, he was placed second in his last race which was in Spain. He looks like he’ll stay. He’ll probably run in the maiden at

Wolverhampton. I can see him for one of those long distance handicaps, we’ve just got to get a couple of runs in so he’s eligible. He’s a nice horse. “Madaany was in training with Francois Rohaut, he goes quite well, he’ll run this weekend. Mahaasen, she’s real sharp minded, knows her job. We broke her in and from day one all she wants to do is please, we haven’t asked her any questions yet, but she goes well at home, I’d say it will take a good one to beat her, though Pete Hammersley’s may have the edge. “Crahck is owned by Jean-Luc Jardel. He’ll be a little handicapper I think. Whilst Karlos Du Cayrou is for Rob Sedgely, he’s not been here long. He ran back in February in France, got a bit of place form, he’ll go the restricted maiden at Taunton.

"Pacific Syrah I bought from Jean-Luc Jardel, he’s by Akim De Ducor. He’s getting there and will probably run in the newcomers.”

who actually rode in Denmark last Saturday, he’s had a few placed rides there and he’s come over to work with me for a year; he’ll have a ride this weekend.

Owen prides himself on having a good young team behind him and being able to give them the opportunity to race ride, they will support last season’s ARO Champion Lady Jockey Joanna Mason.

“Jo will ride the majority of them, she’ll have a ride in every race at Wolverhampton, Antonia will have few too. I like Jo, she’s great, she comes in twice a week, she knows what she’s talking about and she’s tough as well.

“She will ride as first jockey and we also have Antonia Peck who has had a great season pointing. I’ve got a lad called Will Humphrey who’s had about 15 pony winners. He’s a good rider, he comes in about three times a week and a girl, Minty Bloss she comes in most mornings, she’s had loads of pony winners – they’re both pretty sharp. Will will ride at Wolverhampton, but Minty has to wait until she turns 15. I also have Lucas Olsen

“With regards to the season it’s good to see so many horses registered overall; personally I’d like to have as many winners as possible. We’re going to learn a lot this weekend, for many it will be their prep races and we’ll know which way to go with them afterwards.” www.jamesowenracing.com

Phil Collington and Aghsaan (GB)

Philip Collington Brickfield Stud Newmarket Making the transition from jockey to trainer has gone smoothly for HH Sheikh Hamdan’s former retained amateur jockey Phil Collington. His first winner, Hau Kola in a Hereford maiden for John Elliot, was quickly followed by his first Group winner in Aghsaan for His Highness. He went on to score twice on Dubai Day with Jamaayil (premier handicap) and Radames (Gr1 Za’abeel), ending the season in second place in the UK ARO trainers championship, before scoring another Group victory in Toulouse, this time with Jamaayil. Speaking from his new yard, he is looking forward to progressing further this term.

“We knew we would have to move at the end of last season, so we had our final runners at Chelmsford, and then we moved in October. We have 20 boxes available here, which is enough and we’re full. Being just up the road from Marsh Stables it’s very similar set up, we just come on to the heath at a different entrance. The rides and the exercise we do has only changed slightly, but its pretty much the same.” Speaking of his star fillies he says: “Jamaayil was just a little bit slower to come in her coat than Aghsaan, but I’m pleased with them both now. What they achieved last year was great and if we can improve again on that it will be brilliant."

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

Collington continues: "Aghsaan has a few options, the DIAR Fillies & Mares prep at Chelmsford or there’s a race in San Siro, Milan for her in June as well. “Jammayil could go to France at the end May for a Group 3 over 7f. We were hoping last year that she would have got the mile and a quarter, and she was settled in her work at home, but there’s only one Derby so we had to go for it." He reflects: "In hindsight I think if she had gone to Sandown instead, she might have nearly beaten Sir Bani Yas, because from what she showed last year and the speed she showed in Toulouse - the jockey came back and said keep this filly at this trip, she’s got that turn of foot. “Aghsaan, though she’s by Al Jakbar as well, being out of Sophie Du Loup, she’s a different type to Jamaayil and definitely wants mile and a quarter.

showed she went on the Chelmsford surface she could also go back for the Zayed Cup in August. She’s not run there yet though and it’s definitely a bit of a love it or hate it track - we’ve run some horses with good turf form there that haven’t acted on it, so we’ll see. Collington has other options in the sprint category with his first Group 1 winner Radames, he says:“Radames, all being well, will be prepped for the Za’abeel. He’s had a lot of ongoing issues, but we got through last year and managed to get him to the big day, so we’ll do our best with him again this year. As for his first ever winner as a trainer, Collington smiles: “Hau Kola is exciting off of what he did last year. He couldn’t have won much easier so we’ll see him in a handicap at Wolverhampton and hope that he’s improved from last year, he looks to be stronger and to have wintered well. "

“They both love Newbury, but if Aghsaan

Former DIAR juvenile winner Rasaasy has returned to the UK after a spell in France. Collington knew the gelding whenhe was with Gilian Duffield, he explains: “Rasaasy - he’s been with us a good long time now so he’s ready to run, he’ll go to Wolverhampton and we’ll see where we are with him. He is very quirky, but he is very talented too, I know he’s got ability but it’s bringing it out. “Alrazeen we gelded after Chelmsford, he showed a lot of ability, but was just lacking focus at the races, it was the right thing to do. He’d run so well first time out and on the second time, but was not fully focussed. He’s rated 82, so he’ll go into handicaps and well see if he can improve off that mark, Wolverhampton or Taunton.” Regarding the new intake he says: “Anfaas, the No Risk Al Maury filly, she’s really

exciting; the big Munjiz filly, Samawaat she is so big, but not hugely backward, so hopefully we’ll see her in June, there’s Shomoos Athbah, owned by the Prince, by Burning Sand, she goes nicely too. “Of the other three year olds , there’s a full brother to Sunbulla, but he’ll need more time on pedigree. Of the those that have run, there’s Halib Des Forges by Mahabb. He came to me from France, he’s now going nicely and I can’t wait to see him run. He’ll be out at Wolverhampton. “Jefferson is a three year old by Jaafer of Sue Herrod’s. He is very very smart and looks to have a lot of potential so I hope we will see him in June. There are some other horses in the yard for smaller owners who will be aimed at the lower grade handicaps and I hope we can find some improvement in them too.”

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

48

As for a crack at the trainers title Collington says: “It’s something I didn’t even think about last year and then we got to DIAR and all of a sudden we were in front and then I began to think about it a bit more seriously. Initially it didn’t even cross my mind, but I think the main aim this year is to focus on the Group races, it would mean the world to the smaller owners to have a high profile winner.” “ It’s been another step forward with the new yard and were really settled here. The horses seem happy and I hope they translate it to the track. We have good team of staff, we are up to 10 including the part timers. Obviously we have Will Pettis to ride and last year’s Best Newcomer, Malcolm Mallow. He has to improve again from last year, and ride out his claim, plus Laura Pearson is just finishing her time at the British Racing School so she’ll have a few rides too. There’s plenty to look forward to this season.”
