Richard Lancaster, Shadwell’s Stud Director, commented: “We are delighted to have the privilege of standing a stallion bred by Mr Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda, leading Arabian owner in the UAE last season. He is a beautiful colt with a very good temperament and we are hoping that European breeders will support him. He has covered several of Shadwell’s best broodmares in 2017 and we are very excited to see what his progeny will be capable of in Europe.” Gérard Larrieu, from Haras de Saint Faust, commented: “We are very grateful to His Highness Sheikh Hamdan for entrusting this stallion to us. As a proven sire by Amer, we believe that he will suit a lot of mares from good French bloodlines and will provide an interesting outcross for them.” AF Al Buraq’s fee will be announced at a later date.

62 RUNNERS DECLARED FOR ARO SEASON FINALE AT HUNTINGDON The final fixture of the UK Arabian racing season takes place this Saturday, 23rd September, at Huntingdon racecourse in Cambridgeshire, with 62 runners declared. The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) Season Finale will start at 1pm, with an eight-race card, headed by the Gold, Silver and Bronze Finals, plus two further handicaps and maiden races, sponsored by the Arabian Horse Organization, Forta Stud and the Heritage Arabian Racing Club. As the last UK fixture of the 2017 it is where the Season’s Champions will be crowned. Whilst it is certain that ARO Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan will win his sixteenth ARO Owners Championship, James Owen his second Trainers title and Joanna Mason her second Lady Jockeys title, the remaining championships are not so definite, promising a thrilling afternoon of racing.

Gemma Cobb, Arabian Racing Organisation Racing Operations Executive said: “ARO looks forward to our final fixture of 2017 and I’m sure that though many of the championships look to be settled, there could be some close finishes which may turn things around, which will add to the excitement. We thank Huntingdon racecourse and all the days’ sponsors for their support of this meeting.” She continued: “ARO is extremely grateful for the continued support of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and congratulate him in advance of receipt of his sixteenth ARO Owners Championship. The PRESIDENT of the UAE CUP (UK Arabian Derby) Gr1PA Doncaster, UK The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) held it's final Group 1 PA contest of the season at Donacaster, as part of their St.Leger Festival

Nafees (FR) and Tadhg O'Shea - easy winners of the President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby)

The Royal Cavalry of Oman’s homebred colt, Nafees, dominated the final stages of the Group 1 President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby) run at Doncaster on Saturday September 16. Drawing clear in the hands of Tadhg O’Shea, the colt won by two and a quarter lengths, from Ahzar who had finished much closer in the French equivalent at Chantilly in June, with Motrag almost two lengths further

behind. Trainer Charles Gourdain, who is based in Pau in France, was delighted with his colt’s win saying: “It is the last Group 1 race for four-year-olds this season and he has shown today that he is the best of his generation. I would like him to have a break now and we will look forward to next year.”

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

12

Tadhg O'Shea receiving his orders in the paddock with Charles Gourdain and Jean-Pierre Deroubaix

Tadhg O’Shea was also pleased with Nafees, commenting: “He’s a really nice horse. Charles told me to drop him in and ride him with loads of confidence. He settled well, maybe I had him too switched off, so I had to give him a shake of the reins, but to be fair, he really picked up the bridle. He’s a very good four-year-old with a potent turn of foot.” Representing the Royal Cavalry was their Racing and Bloodstock advisor, Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, who thanked Oman, His Majesty the Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and Brigadier General Abdulrazak Al Shahwarzi of the Royal Cavalry for the opportunity to manage their stable. Of the Nafees’s performance he said: “We had to run against older horses in the summer, but this race was perfect for him. The trainer gave good orders

and the jockey followed them. Somedays it doesn’t work, but today it was perfect.” Faisal Al Rahmani, General Secretary for the President of the UAE Cup series, was happy to be back for a second year saying: “It’s been a beautiful day, it’s wonderful to run the President of the UAE Cup on such a prestigious race day in the UK. We want to progress this series across the world.” The Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) had been thrilled by the prospect of a rematch between Nafees and Ahzar and the race itself did not disappoint. Run over a mile and a quarter, The President of the UAE Cup had resumed its’ association with the UK Arabian Derby last year and is exclusively for four-year-old Purebred Arabians.

ARO Director, Genny Haynes commented: “We are delighted for the Royal Cavalry of Oman, who have also been a long-term supporter and sponsor of Arabian racing in this country. This the final Group 1 of the UK Arabian racing season, and the last for the Purebred Arabian classic generation in Europe. We hope that Nafees, Ahzar and Motrag emulate last year’s winner and placed horses who have all won Group 1 races across Europe this year, which has really upheld the form of this race, and the value of Arabian racing in the UK and worldwide.” She continued: “We are extremely grateful to the Abu Dhabi Sports Council for their generous support of

our feature race for four-year-olds. Moving the President of the UAE Cup to St Leger Day itself this year, further enhances the prestige of the race and the status of Arabian racing in the UK, with it being run as part of Doncaster’s most prestigious meeting of the year. We thank all the team at Doncaster for helping to promote the day and for their support of Arabian racing.”

THE SULTANATE OF OMAN RACEDAY Windsor, UK The annual Sultante of Oman raceday returned to Royal Windsor racecourse, with trainer James Owen securing his position at the head of the ARO Trainers Championship with three wins

Al Faaris (GB) winner of the first race, in the paddock at Windsor

James Owen further secured his place at the top of the Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO) Trainers Championship, with three winners at the annual Sultanate of Oman raceday at Royal Windsor on August Bank Holiday Monday. With wins for Munbaher and Awzaan, he also helped leading ARO lady amateur Joanna Mason increase her lead over Ladies Championship rival, Ellie Mackenzie, with a double. In addition, Al Faaris who won the opener, formed the first leg of a crosscard double for multiple champion

amateur Simon Walker, who rushed from the winners’ circle at Windsor to fill the same spot at Epsom, where he won the Gentleman Amateur’s Derby, riding under rules on C’est No Mour, just two and a half hours later. Clearly thrilled with his team’s performance Owen said: “It’s been a great day. It’s great for Al Faaris to get his head in front at last, as he’s been running well in the premier handicaps, and I thought Rafeef, the three-yearold who was second, ran a lovely race too. She’s one for the future and we’ll probably put her away now.

Munbaher (FR) and Joanna Mason win the Royal Cavalry of Oman (0-80) Handicap over six furlongs

“Munbaher, who won the 0-80 handicap, was able to take advantage of his lower mark on the grass, as I think he’ll struggle off his higher rating on the All Weather now. He’s a trier and we love him.” Also debuting in that race for Owen were Minty Bloss and Conor Brace, both highly successful graduates from the Pony Racing sphere, of them he said: “They got on well. It’s very different for them and they can only improve from here, so I’m really pleased for them both.” Of Awzaan, who won the Royal Cavalry of Oman Conditions race, he said: “I’m delighted with Awzaan, I didn’t realise

there wasn’t going to be any pace in the race, so well done to Antonia Peck for taking the initiative with Emiraaty, as the original plan had been to drop him in as well. She went on, when nobody else did, so Emiraaty’s run well too. "It’s great to get another win for Awzaan, it will give him a bit of confidence, he’s just been caught between two stools this season and the ground hasn’t been right for him in the bigger races either. He’s a nice horse and hopefully we can find another race for him this year, it may mean we have to travel to find something.”

Joanna Mason was delighted with her double saying: “It’s been a really good day. Obviously, it’s been an honour to ride a horse like Awzaan, who has been Group 1 placed. He did it nicely today." She continued: "With Munbaher, that trip is really too short for him and we were a bit outpaced all the way, but he just picked them off, one by one. It’s great for him to show some form on the grass now. He loves it in front, but I couldn’t do that here. Knowing he stays, I just had to let him bowl along, but he’s very uncomplicated.” THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

21

Elyassaat (FR) and James Harding go to post for the Visit Oman (0-55) Handicap

There was also a first time win for trainer Jayme Plumb with Elyassaat in the Visit Oman 0-55 Handicap. Of that win Plumb said: “He’s been a tricky horse, we were hopeful today though. We tried lots of different things with him and James [Harding] is so calm with him. He lets him think he’s in charge, if you treat him like a prince he’ll work for you. The owners, Blue Star Racing are a syndicate of about fifteen people, they’re all new to the sport. They all get a chance to go racing and we’re hoping to get another syndicate horse next year.” Harding commented:" He needs a lot of cofidence boosting and is gaining in confidence every time I've ridden him. I probably hit the front too soon, but

Blue Star Racing, Jayme Plumb and James Harding receive their trophies from Salim Al Hakmani

once he's there you have to keep him going there's no point in disappoinitng him. If a horse had come to my girths he would have gone on again."

The Sultanate of Oman 0-70 handicap was also a pleasing first win for Forta Stud’s Shammat Al Hosn. Trained by Peter Hammersley and ridden by current leading ARO jockey David Turner. Of her win, Hammersley said: “She made hard work of it, but it’s the furthest she’s ever raced and she was out in front for a long time, but she’s stuck on. She’s in the UK Arabian Derby, so I expect she will take her chances there. She’s still quite green and she’s going to be a very nice mare in time.” B-Wing was another to break his maiden, when he won the Sultanate of Oman 0-40 Handicap. Bred, trained and part-owned by Adam Newey, he was also a first winner for his sire, Benamer. For good measure Newey also trained and bred the third home, Southpaw. THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

The concluding race was the Heritage Arabian Racing Club Handicap Conditions which went to Top Trip, trained by Tina Pfeiffer and ridden by her husband Robin. Owner-breeder, Jenny Peyton commented: “He likes Windsor, we’ve won here on good to firm before and also been second on soft. We’ve not had so many chances to come racing this year, but this win was wonderful.” ARO Racing Operations Executive Gemma Cobb commented: “We are delighted for the Royal Cavalry of Oman, as this raceday is their seasons’ highlight, and the crowd of over 2000 made the most of the opportunity to sample the culture of the Sultanate of Oman in their traditional hospitality tent and to have their hands decorated by the henna artists."

25

“It has been a great result for James Owen and his team, and a special day for Simon Walker, to go on from his win here to win at Epsom. We are also pleased for the Peyton’s to win again with Top Trip here in the Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC) conditions race, which is a series designed to help those at the grassroots of the sport be competitive and has proved a popular addition to our calendar.”

She continued: “This has always been a well-supported fixture at Windsor, and it concludes the Royal Cavalry of Oman’s very generous sponsorship for 2017. We thank Windsor and the racecourse teams at Taunton, Doncaster, Bath and Newbury for their support of the Royal Cavalry’s race sponsorship this season.”

MALAZGIRT TROPHY Gr.1 Instanbul, Turkey

Muraaqib (FR)

There were double celebrations for HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Arabian racing and breeding operation at the start of September with wins for Muraaqib and Handassa at Istanbul's International Festival. Muraaqib added to his fine tally of Group 1 wins when taking the International Malazgirt Trophy iin some style at the Veliefendi racetrack over a mile. The five-year old son of Munjiz was held up off the early pace, coming wide entering the home straight to make his challenge up the centre of the course. He smoothly went into the

lead, readily drawing clear of the Thomas Fourcy trained Jabal Kassyoun for a wide margin win, eased down on the line. The locally trained Gumburgumbur was a further three lengths away in third. Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancaster sadi:"Muraaqib was very disappointing at Newbury, so it was great to see him coming back to form on ground that he loves. The going at Newbury was all against him and we are feeling that he is now more effective over a mile. It was a top class performance and sets him up for a challenge in one of the big races this autumn."

27

Muraaqib (FR) and Francois-Xavier Bertras win in Veliefendi [photo TJK]

Handassa's triumph in the International IFAHR Trophy over 2100m was his third consecutive win in the Group 2 contest. Racing handily at the head of the following pack, when the early leader Founoun Si Badr was beginning to tire after the final bend, he was ready to take up the challenge. However, both Al Mouwaffak and Merih had similar ideas, though Merih faded first, Al Mouwaffak eyeballed the son of Madjani until the last half furlong when it was clear he was held by the winner.Handassa scored by a length from Al Mouwaffak with Firikya staying on for third. Commenting on his win Lancaster continued:"It was wonderful to see Handassa coming back to form in such style. He had a few problems after

Handassa(FR) and Francois-Xavier

returning from Dubai in March, so it was a great piece of training by Francois Rohaut to have him fit to win this race once again. Handassa loves this track as it was his third time winning the race."

QATAR CUP (PRIX DRAGON) Gr.1 Chantilly, France

Ebraz (GB) and Christian Demuro win comfortably at Chantilly Photo (C) Noelle Derre

The main event of Arc trials weekend for Arabian racing is the Qatar Cup (Prix Dragon), held over the same course and distance as the Qatar Arabian World Cup the following month. Nine runners lined up for the Group 1 contest and it was Naziq who stormed off in front, showing the field a clean pair of heels like she had when winning the Group 1Qatar Trophy des Juments over course and distance last year. She was tracked by Yazeed and Ebraz, but she was unable to shake off

the colts and her run faded with 400m to go. Yazeed briefly took over, however Ebraz was ready and in a matter of strides he accelerated away in the manner of a top class performer, finally finishing six lengths clear of Yazeed, with stablemate Gazwan staying on for third. Afterwards trainer Julian Smart confirmed that both horses will go to the World Cup next month, probably with Ba'sil as a pacemaker and that Ebraz was not at full fitness so will improve again for the race.

THE ARABIAN RACEHORSE

29

He continued: "Ebraz is a very good horse who goes on any ground. The World Cup distance is perfect for him. I don't like to say too much at this stage, but I think that he is the best four-year-old that I have ever trained. "For the big race, I think that the ones to watch out for are Tayf and Thomas Fourcy's horses. I have won the race three times, but only with fillies. I hope that Ebraz will be the first colt to give us a victory in the race." Alban de Mieulle, trainer of Yazeed, and also Tayf, who beat Ebraz by a nose in the first leg of the Qatar Triple Crown at Goodwood in August said:"Yazeed has run very well for a comeback. He finished in front of Gazwan, who is a vey good horse, but the winner was a cut above them

today. The horse really needed the run. He had spent a long time on the sidelines as he had a bad foot abcess that took a long time to come right. We had to wait and wait. He could have run three weeks ago, but I preferred to wait for the race today and then go to the big one. I hope that I will be proved right. "He will run in the World Cup where we have Tayf, who is very different: he shows nothing in the morning, he is very undemostrative and he does the minimum. With Tayf, you have to come at the very last moment, whereas Yazeed has a lot of heart." The Qatar World Cup is on Sunday 1st October, with declarations due on 28 September.

WATHBA STALLIONS DAY Chelmsford, UK The final visit to Chelmsford City Racecourse for ARO for the 2017 season produced a treble for ARO Patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum and for trainer Phil Collington

Saleemah (GB) wins under Will Pettis

Trainer Philip Collington recorded his first hat-trick of the 2017 season with wins for Alwaleed, Saleemah and Hau Kola at the final Wathba Stallions sponsored UK fixture at Chelmsford City on Saturday. There was also a treble for ARO Patron HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who owned and bred Alwaleed and Saleemah and also Al Kaaser who is trained by James Owen. Recording doubles were jockeys Will Pettis (Alwaleed and Saleemah) and Charlie Price (Hau Kola and Kayclaire), whilst trainer Delyth Thomas’s double was more notable because Kiraa is the dam of Kayclaire. The mother and daughter combination have previously

been dual winners for Thomas at a HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival fixture at Hereford last year. Going in to the fixture, HH Sheikh Hamdan was already confirmed as Champion Owner for the 16th time. The remaining Championships now look more settled, as following his win on Asra Min Al-Talqa in the opening race, David Turner, is now four wins clear of his nearest rival, Will Pettis in the Jockeys table. Whilst trainer James Owen, is five winners clear of Phil Collington and looks more assured to claim his second consecutive title, as does Joanna Mason, who is four clear in the Lady Jockeys’ Championship.
