HOW THE GAME WILL GO
Broncos should win a shootout Nate Lowery
Sports & Rec Editor
Boise State’s weaknesses in defending the run were on full display Saturday night. New Mexico, owners of a 3-6 record, were able to run wild over a Broncos defense that struggled to make tackles. The Lobos dashed up and down the Boise State defense for 505 yards and had two scoring runs of 75 yards. Against San Diego State, the Broncos can not allow the same thing to happen. Aztec quarterback Quinn Kahler has tossed seven touchdowns to eight interceptions and should be no trouble for a Boise State secondary that has succeeded at forcing turnovers. The trouble for Boise State will be running back Donnel Pumphrey. Pumphrey has rushed for 1,216 yards this season to go along with his 13 touchdowns. The talented sophomore from Las Vegas, Nevada is first in the MW in rushing yards. After starting the season off with one of the nation’s best units in run defense, the Broncos have struggled over the past five weeks to slow

teams down. The defense has allowed 10 plays of 50 yards or more this season. The main reason for this is tackling and missed assignments. Linebackers and defensive lineman have either blown their assignment leaving a hole in the defense or have not been able to wrap the ball carrier up and bring them to the ground. For Boise State to avoid a third straight upset at the hands of San Diego State, the defense will need to tighten up. The Broncos offense has been able to keep pace with every team they’ve faced not named Ole’ Miss or Air Force. Because of Grant Hedrick and Jay Ajayi’s ability to keep Boise State in the game when the defense falters, you can expect this Saturday to be a shoot-out. Just as Boise State’s games against Nevada and New Mexico have proven, when the Broncos defense can not contain an elite rusher, the offense increases the tempo to stay in the game.

BLACK OUT against SDSU

4 items to mark in your pregame notebook Nate Lowery
Sports & Rec Editor
Broncos move up in the polls
Boise State has slowly been moving up the polls. The Broncos have seven points in the Amway Coaches Poll and one point in the AP Poll. The team is still unranked, but has gained ground with each passing week. Marshall is the highest ranked team from the non-Power 5 conferences, but has been left off the College Football Playoff Committee’s rankings the past two weeks due to their weak schedule. Two members of ESPN — Mark Schlabach and Brett McMurphy — have the Broncos projected to play Arizona State in the Vizio Fiesta Bowl.
Hedrick’s big game
Boise State’s 60-49 win over New Mexico may have been ugly, but it would have been a whole lot uglier if not for the performance of
quarterback Grant Hedrick. Hedrick had 498 yards through the air and on the ground, and totaled six touchdowns. Hedrick’s performance earned him a spot on the Capital One Impact Performers team for the week. Since being benched following his four-interception performance against Air Force, Hedrick has tossed 11 touchdowns to only two interceptions. The redshirt senior from Independence, Oregon sits at second in the nation in completion percentage.
Ajayi no. 2 in the nation
Boise State running back Jay Ajayi is ranked second in the nation in yards from scrimmage. The redshirt junior from Plano, Texas averages 173.8 yards per game— just shy of Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon at 176.0 yards per game. Ajayi showed off his dual-threat ability with 161 yards on the ground against New Mexico, as

well as a 75 yard touchdown reception in the first half. Ajayi is still in contention for the Doak Walker Award given to the nation’s best running back. Ajayi is ranked No. 14 in the nation in rushing yard with 1,146 yards. His 14 touchdowns are good for sixth in the nation.
November is the coldest month
Since 2010, Boise State has gone 11-4 in the month of November.
Albeit a winning record, November has spelled doom for the Broncos the past four seasons. The four losses in November either removed the Broncos from BCS bowl contention or ruined Boise State’s chances at a conference title. The Broncos managed to start November off with a win after a 60-49 comeback victory over New Mexico, but still have games left against Utah State and Wyoming.

KEY PLAYERS AGAINST SDSU Nate Lowery Sports & Rec Editor
Despite being listed as a linebacker on the roster, the unit Lee provides the most spark for is special teams. Wielder of “The Hammer”—the hammer the special teams player of the week carries as the Broncos come out of the tunnel—in two games this season, Lee has thrilled fans with brutal hits on kickoffs. San Diego State has managed to beat Boise State the past two seasons due to their ability to win the game of special teams. For the Broncos to have any chance to reverse their downward trend against the Aztecs, special teams is where Boise State is going to have to improve. Lee could be the answer to that. The sophomore from Susanville, California is going to be needed to limit San Diego State on kickoff returns. This will cause the Aztecs to start with bad field position and give the Broncos’ shaky defense more room to work with.

No. 82 Thomas Sperbeck Soph. WR
leslie boston-hude/the arbiter
In the absence of Matt Miller, many expected Sperbeck to be the next man up in the Broncos rotation at wide receiver. What few predicted, however, is how much of a vital cog to the Boise State offense Sperbeck would become. Over the past two games, Sperbeck has hauled in 15 passes for 312 yards and a touchdown. The difference that Sperbeck provides over the Broncos other receivers is his ability to make crucial plays. Against New Mexico, Sperbeck was able to haul in passes on third downs to move the chains and set up a Boise State comeback. There will be little separation on the scoreboard between these two teams. This means those deep, downfield shots Sperbeck miraculously manages to contain are going to be all the more critical.
There should be no shock with this selection—Goodale was the difference maker last season against the Aztecs, and he’ll most likely end up as the difference maker this season. In 2013, as regulation expired at Qualcomm Stadium, Goodale missed a 43yard field goal that would have won the game. Instead of the Broncos flying back to Boise with a berth in the inaugural MW Championship Game, Boise State lost in overtime for their second conference loss in the season. This game should be a close one throughout. Every single chance Boise State has to put points up on the board—be it a field goal or a touchdown — they will need to capitalize in order to avenge two straight losses to San Diego State. Look for Goodale to have another chance to clinch the game for the Broncos.

What a win would mean for Boise State Nate Lowery
Sports & Rec Editor
The 2007 Fiesta Bowl put Boise State on the map and defined the Broncos as a football power. Since winning the 2010 Fiesta Bowl, however, the Broncos have fallen from national prominence and have not had an undefeated season. With the BCS system now gone forever, Boise State’s chances of making it into the national championship have decreased, but their chances of making it into a marquee bowl game have actually in-
creased. The Cotton, Peach and Fiesta Bowls have all been reserved for the highest ranked team from one of the non-Power 5 conferences (MWC, Sun Belt, AAC, C-USA, MAC). Currently, that team would be Colorado State, but because of Boise State’s win over the Rams earlier this season, they would get the nod. Only a conference champion from the non-Power 5 conferences may clinch a spot in the New Year’s Day bowl.

Where a loss would leave the Broncos There’s nothing left this season for the Broncos Nate Lowery
Sports & Rec Editor
Yes, Boise State would still have three games left this season, but the Broncos’ goal this season was to win the MW title.
If Boise State loses to San Diego State, they fall behind Colorado State in the standings. Currently, both teams have one conference loss, but the Broncos hold an advantage over the Rams based on their 37-27 win earlier this season.
DATE
OPPONENT
If San Diego State wins, that win over Colorado State would be meaningless and the Rams and Utah State would pass the Broncos in the conference standings. A three-loss season is a vast improvement over the disastrous
five-loss season of 2013, but few within the program would like to be five years removed from the team’s last outright conference title. The farther Boise State moves from outright conference titles, the farther the team moves away from the national spotlight and credibility.
