Boise State-TCU preview A Horned obstacle in route to a BCS bowl game John Garretson
Online Sports Editor The time has finally come. The anticipation is building, the excitement is brewing. An uncanny rivalry built from previous bowl games, unmatched by even the in-state adversary Idaho Vandals. The first and last time the two teams will meet as conference opponents. The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (7-2, 4-0 in Mountain West) are in town this Saturday to attempt to dethrone the Boise State Broncos (8-0, 3-0). Boise State fans have been waiting anxiously for this game to arise, ever since the Broncos joined the Horned Frogs in the Mountain West in 2010 and university presidents decided the controversial match up would take place in Boise as opposed to Fort Worth because of TCU’s conference exit to the Big East, which they turned down to accept an invitation to the Big 12. You can bet TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson would like a recall on the vote for the game location with all the talks of Boise State heading to the Big East. All three match ups between the two teams have occurred within bowl games, starting off in 2003 with a Boise State 34-31 victory in the Fort Worth Bowl, then in 2008 where TCU evened the score with a 17-16 win at the Poinsettia Bowl and in 2010 when the Broncos took the lead in the series with a 17-10 decision in the Fiesta Bowl. Both programs have had winning credibility to their names, specifically since 2008, TCU has had 43 wins and only five losses, which trails Boise State’s 46 wins and two losses by three. It’s naïve, however, to rule out that the Horned Frogs play against ranked teams, as they have gone 3-1 against in their last four games against Top 5 ranked teams, most notably a 21-19 win
over Wisconsin this past year in the Rose Bowl. While TCU hasn’t had the same success it had last year, with an opening 50-48 loss to Baylor and 40-33 loss to Southern Methodist University, the Frogs still carry momentum into this Mountain West game, having remained undefeated in conference play this season with a 21 Mountain West game win streak on the line. Anchoring the TCU offense, ranked eighth nationally in points for (41.6), is sophomore quarterback Casey Pachall, who’s replaced prized Horned Frog and current Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton. Pachall has done well taking over the reigns as a sophomore, throwing for almost 2,000 yards, 19 touchdowns, five interceptions and an eighth ranked passer efficiency of 160.3, just one of two sophomores in the Top 10. TCU’s running game, or better the three-headed dog, consists of sophomore Waymon James (652 yards rushing), junior Matthew Tucker (532 yds) and junior Ed Wesley (528 yds) is something for the Boise State defensive line to be aware of. There’s no slacking for the secondary either, with sophomore Josh Boyce posing as a receiving threat with 46 receptions for 704 yards and six touchdowns. Keep in mind that Boise State junior cornerback Jarrell Gavins is out for the season and junior starting cornerback Jamar Taylor was out with an injury against UNLV. The Horned Frog defense has been a bit porous this year, allowing 22.3 points per game, but with senior linebacker Tank Carder (46 tackles, 3.5 for a loss) in command, the Boise State offensive line must remain aware. Arguably the biggest game to be played at Bronco Stadium, it’s going to take all four quarters for one of these two teams to surrender a loss.
Senior D.J. Harper looks to continue his success this week.

Some of Kellen Moore’s options at wide receiver include younger brother Kirby along with brothers Mitch and Dallas Burroughs. an opportunity that we both saw and that we really wouldn’t have any other time in our life.” With little brother Dallas seeing more and more playing time with each game, Mitch has been the one to help make his brother’s move to Division-I football as smooth as possible. “It’s a big transition from high school to college, especially when you’re playing right away. (I) just tell him to take a deep breath and try getting him extra film time,” Mitch said. Both sets of brothers knew they would like to pursue football after high school, but never really planned on being on the same team.
“We always talked about playing college ball, I don’t know if we talked about playing together,” younger brother Kirby said. “We both knew that we wanted to play football at the next level. When I got the opportunity I definitely took it. That was kind of his goal after I committed, he wanted to come here and play with me,” Mitch said. The Moore and Burroughs brothers have found a great deal of success playing in blue and orange, but they know that the ride won’t last forever. “I’m really close with Kellen,” Kirby said. “We only have a few more months here (together), so we try to make the most of it.”

In the world of sports camaraderie, is something that builds among teammates. A feeling of unity that can only be forged through time, effort and persistence. While many teams become close-knit “families,” very few athletes actually get the chance to play with their real siblings. For the Boise State football team, two such examples exist in brothers Kellen and Kirby Moore, and Mitch and Dallas Burroughs. “It’s something I didn’t really anticipate growing up, ‘cause we were four years apart. Now it’s really fun and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” junior Mitch Burroughs said. “Not many people get this opportunity,” sophomore Kirby Moore said. “You really got to cherish it because it’s only for so long and not many people get the chance to grow up together playing.” While the Moore brothers have had the chance to play together for a few years leading up to their time with the Broncos, this has been the first year that brothers Mitch and Dallas Burroughs have been able to wear the same jerseys at the same time. “He wanted to come play with me,” Mitch said. “It’s

Boise State building success up front Broncos’ offensive line not worried about limelight; more concerned with winning and keeping their Heisman candidate safe Ty Hawkins Journalist
The No. 5 ranked Boise State Broncos (8-0) football team boasts one of the most potent offensive attacks in the country. Names like Kellen Moore, Doug Martin and whichever receiver is the flavor of the week, garner a majority of the press from the media. up front, the offensive line. They create the pocket and passing lanes for the quarterback, open up holes for running backs and take care of the overall dirty work for the offense. Being an offensive lineman isn’t exactly the most glamorous position on a football team, but the front five are what make it possible for the 11-man offense to function, one of the things that makes football the ultimate team sport. A small group within a collective unit combine to achieve a common goal, one play and one
drive at a time. “For us to be effective, all five of us have to work together and be on the same page,” senior offensive tackle Nate Potter said. “As a team we have to do that, but it all starts up front with us making sure we make the right calls and doing the right thing.” The feeling of knowing that they helped spring a big run is all the notoriety these guys need. “I love looking up and seeing Doug go for a big run,” sophomore tackle Charles Leno, Jr. said. The Washington Redskins
offensive line of became famous when they won a pair of Super Bowl titles in the ‘80s; fans began calling them the Hogs. Boise State likely won’t reach that kind of hype, and they’re just fine with that. “We don’t want to be in the spotlight, we want to be behind the scenes,” senior tackle Nate Potter said. Moore, with his record breaking ways and constant Heisman Trophy chatter may be the sexy pick for ESPN packages, but it’s actually Potter who has the NFL scouts salivating.
At 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds, the former Timberline High product in Boise that has the potential to follow in the footsteps of former standout Bronco lineman Daryn Colledge and Ryan Clady, now playing for the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos respectively. Leno, Jr. could be headed down a similar path, too. He’s a guy who can move well, who coaches have been waiting to take that next step which seems to be happening this season. Rumor has it that if he were three inches taller
he would have played college basketball, a notion he simply laughs off. This is isn’t the first time either of them has been interviewed, and it likely isn’t the last. They aren’t worried about making the front page; they’re more concerned with doing their jobs and winning. “Every game has a different challenge and I try to rise up to the occasion,” Potter said. “That’s the life of an offensive lineman and we like it that way.”
The Bronco offensive line has done an incredible job of keeping quarterback Kellen Moore safe all season, allowing a total of four sacks through the first eight games. CODY FINNEY/THE ARBITER
