HOW THE GAME WILL GO

The Broncos should roll Fresno State Nate Lowery

Sports & Rec Editor

Few things in sports are as sweet as revenge. Boise State will have that chance on Saturday as they try to rid themselves of the bitter memory of last years 41-40 loss to Fresno State. Despite the Broncos’ struggles on both sides of the ball thus far this season, Boise State is set up to reclaim the Milk Can—the trophy given to the winner of this rivalry game—from the Bulldogs. The Fresno State team that beat the Broncos last year is much different than the one they’ll face this year. Gone is Derek Carr and Davante Adams, and the potent offense that put up 43.4 points per game last season. Quarterback Brian Burrell has struggled to fill Carr’s shoes. He has managed only eight touchdowns as opposed to Carr’s 24 through six games last season. The Bulldogs are currently ranked 57th in the nation in total offense and average only 29 points per game. Fresno State’s lethargic offense is set up to struggle against a Boise State defense that is one of the top ranked units in the MW. The Broncos will also have a sizeable home field advantage as Boise State will

PAGE 4

be playing their first game at Albertsons Stadium since Sept. 20. With Boise State’s return from a two game road trip, the Broncos also enter their toughest stretch of games this season with back to back games against Fresno State and BYU. Despite needing to win out the rest of the season and an Air Force loss to make it to the MW Championship game, head coach Bryan Harsin has continuously said the Broncos will only take things one week at a time. Boise State however is going to want to try and build as much momentum as they can before BYU comes to Boise. A big win over Fresno State would do just that. It’s for this reason that the Broncos’ bye week came at just the right time. Injuries have been a major downfall for Boise State this season. The much needed bye week has provided a perfect chance for the Broncos’ injured players to become healthy once again. With an extra week of preparation and the home field advantage, look for the Broncos to move farther and farther away from their losses to Ole Miss and Air Force. A lethargic Fresnso State team should allow them to do just that.

Malachi Burt brings spirit to Boise State Asst. Sports & Rec Editor

Malachi Burt is one of Boise State’s cheerleaders. Burt is a senior pursuing a double major in Accounting and Business Management with a minor in Spanish. The Springfield, Oregon native sat down with The Arbiter to talk about his time in cheer and what Boise State means to him. Arbiter: What made you start cheerleading? Burt: When I was 14 the girl I was into at the time told me to come out to a few of their open practices to see how it is. I did and I ended up liking it more than I did the girl, so I stuck around. Arbiter: Why did you come to Boise State? Burt: Boise State was just a good fit at the right time. The first tour I had out here was perfect and I have loved it ever since. The cheerleading team was very successful and

a program that strives for success and I really want that to be a part of who I was going to become. Arbiter: Did your athletic background help you transition into cheerleading? Burt: Oh absolutely. But cheerleading is like no other sport on the planet and there is nothing you can really do in another sport to prep you to be a good cheerleader. Arbiter: What has been your favorite memory as a Boise State cheerleader? Burt: My freshman year when the Air Force Academy came in to play us. Since we were playing Air Force they had three F-15s fly over the stadium super low like they were almost touching the field. Combine that with hearing the Boise State side to side and running out on the field with the flag, it still gives me chills. That was the switch where I was yeah I am a Bronco. Arbiter: What is your favorite game day tradition?

Burt: Walking through the Stuckle Skybox and shaking hands with President Bob Kustra and his wife. Seeing the athletic directors and all the other random people that are up there is great. Its cool because they don’t get a lot of crowd interaction and the reaction on their faces is great because they are so stoked that we go out of our way to see them. I enjoy providing that for them. Arbiter: Do you have any pre game rituals? Burt: I tape my wrists twice before every game. One time when we get there before the game and then right before we go on the field I have to have a fresh set of tape. It is the only thing that stays the same for me. If I don’t something is off and it doesn’t feel right. Arbiter: What do you want to do after you graduate at Boise State? Burt: I am thinking about getting my C.P.A. or going to graduate school and getting a masters

degree in accounting. I want to become an accountant somewhere and I am hoping I don’t have to leave the valley because I really like it here. The one thing though I do want to do for sure is have a family of my own.

KEY PLAYERS AGAINST FRESNO STATE Nate Lowery Sports & Rec Editor

Tyler Gray has quietly displayed he is one of the most dependable Broncos this season. After starting seven games last season, Gray was moved into a reserve role this season but that hasn’t stopped him from being a huge contributor for the defense. Gray is currently tied for fifth on the team with 23 tackles and has recorded two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. A threat in both the rush and pass defense, Gray is going to have his numbered called multiple times against a versatile offense like Fresno State. The Bulldogs have rushed for 1,150 yard this season, while also passing for 1,439. A multi-dimensional offense is going to require a versatile defender like Gray to keep the Broncos from allowing the Bulldogs the 462 yards they gave up to Nevada.

History can tell a lot about a program. When Hedrick has struggled, the Broncos struggle. In Boise State’s two losses this season, Hedrick threw multiple interceptions. The key to defeating Fresno State lies in the quarterback. In Fresno State’s three losses to USC, Utah and Nebraska this season, the opposing quarterbacks have combined for 1,197 total yards and 16 touchdowns. Hedrick bounced back from his four interception performance and benching against Air Force in a big way the against Nevada. Against the Bulldogs, Hedrick has an even bigger chance to prove he deserves to remain the starting quarterback. Fresno State ranks in the bottom 15 percent nationally when it comes to total defense. Hedrick is set up to exploit a putrid Bulldogs defense and have an excellent game Friday night.

Jake Roh has successfully turned around Boise State’s recent struggles in regards to tight ends. The tight end position was a staple under Bryan Harsin when he served as an assistant for the Broncos between 20012010. Once he left to accept the co-offensive coordinator position at Texas, tight ends became less productive in the Boise State’s offense. With Harsin’s return to Boise State however, so too has the productivity of the Broncos’ tight ends. Roh is a major reason for that paradigm shift. Roh is fourth on the team with 17 receptions and 217 yards. The Bulldogs have given up 97 yards to tight ends, but off of only four receptions. If Roh can become an involved member of the Broncos’ passing game, Boise State could add to their already strong offensive output.

What a win would mean for Boise State Nate Lowery

Sports & Rec Editor

Yes, two losses doesn’t entirely kill a season, but Boise State’s goal every year is to win the MW Championship. If the Broncos can’t overcome Fresno State at home then there is no possible way that they can play for the MW Championship. Since Kellen Moore’s departure and the 2011 move to the MW, Boise State has struggled to dominate conference foes as they were so used to in the WAC. The MW has proven to be a much more formidable conference, however.

The Broncos have gone 31-8, a respectable record. However it is far and away from the standard Boise State fans have come to expect every season. With each passing year in the MW, the Broncos continue to decline from the No. 4 national ranking they held in 2009. With a win over Fresno State, Boise State can begin to build more momentum heading into the final push of the season. With away games against New Mexico and Wyoming and home games against BYU, San Diego State and Utah State still on tap, the Broncos can’t afford any more slip-ups this season.

Boise State’s season isn’t over yet

Where a loss would leave the Broncos The Boise State dynasty is over

Nate Lowery

Sports & Rec Editor

No civilization can last forever, and sports is no exception. Whether is be Texas, Florida or USC, no program has been able to maintain 10-win sea-

son after 10-win season for decades. Boise State is finding that out the hard way. Since 2009 when the Broncos won their second Fiesta Bowl, Boise State has seen a continuous decline each season.

DATE

OPPONENT

One 8-5 season is not going to kill a program, but if Boise State falls to Fresno State this Friday, the best record the Broncos can finish is 10-3—a lofty goal for this team. To finish with 10 wins, Boise State would have to beat BYU, San Diego State and Utah State, as well as their bowl game. Head coach Bryan Harsin and his staff have recruited successfully thus

far. However a point where player won’t have any live experience with Boise State as a nationally ranked program is rapidly approaching. Will Boise State suffer through losing season after losing season just because of a loss to Fresno State? Absolutely not. But understand that this is a program that will have an uphill climb to return to the level they were once at.
