THE PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Members,

Happy New Year, I hope you had a wonderful holiday season.

At the time of writing this letter, I received notice of the sudden passing of our Vice President, Soren Rasmussen. I want to take a moment to recognize Soren and his incredible contribution to the Club as an esteemed member of the Board, Executive, and Chair of our latest Construction Committee. Soren loved The Arbutus Club. He was extremely passionate about its success –especially anything related to squash and facility enhancements. As an architect, Soren played an integral role in Arbutus 2020, and he had once again put on his leadership cap as Chair of our new Long Range Planning Committee. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to extend our deepest condolences to his family and all members that had the privilege to know him. Soren will be truly missed.

Club staff were extremely busy over the past few months, helping to create meaningful memories for our members and their guests. Close to 2,500 people took part in Breakfast with Santa and the Christmas Lunch Buffet alone. An incredible amount of work goes into these events, and I want to thank our fantastic staff for their efforts.

Although we are embarking on a new calendar year, this month marks the fifth month of recreational programming. Fall registration was highly successful, with over 600 classes offered and 3,700 unique registrations. The Recreation Services team continues to adjust its plans to increase program availability in each department.

You should have received notice of the upcoming Entrance Fee increase and changes to the Special Entrance Fee structure. The Board approved these changes because of the work of the AdHoc Membership Committee. The Committee’s mandates focused on the Club’s forecasted growth, peak time demand for programs and facilities, the estimated equity required to fund future capital expenditures, and the rising prices of inflation since the last increase in 2017. The Special Entrance Fees and new Associate Fee is effective on May 13, 2023. You can find additional information on our website under “Club News.” In addition, the new member waitlist will remain closed until the Board can review the results of the occupancy study and determine if changes are required.

The Nominating Committee has begun the important work to recommend a slate for the 2023/24 Board of Directors and Executive. The nominating process starts as early as possible so the

Committee can seek out strong candidates for the Board and identify individuals who may be willing to serve in our extensive House Committee system. Ideally, Board candidates would have House Committee experience as it helps to develop a “whole club” perspective and establish the role of the Board and committees. Prior committee experience also provides insights into a member’s skills, interests, and ability to make constructive contributions to achieving Club goals. The membership is invited to recommend fellow members for the Nominating Committee’s consideration by dropping off the Nominating Form to Club Reception by Friday, January 20th.

With only four months remaining until the new Board term, our House Committees are busy completing this year’s mandates. Should you be interested in joining a House Committee, please get in touch with our Director of Membership, Christine Piner, at cpiner@arbutusclub.com.

Although we’ve made numerous improvements to the Club, we must continue to look to the future due to the age of some of our original buildings. There is no doubt that the next major capital project will be significant, but don’t worry; the construction signs are not going up anytime soon. However, a project of this magnitude will require comprehensive planning. Therefore, the Long Range Planning Committee has begun its work to help the Board develop a road map for the future.

You may have noticed the “Ask the Board” advertisements around the Club and on social media. This initiative aims to increase communication between the Board and the membership. Don’t hesitate to reach out to president@arbutusclub.com should you have any board-related questions or concerns.

I wish you all a prosperous and healthy 2023!

Sincerely,

2 The Bark winter 2023

Meet the Team FEATURED STAFF

After a 3-year delay, The Arbutus Club was finally able to celebrate all our Long-Standing Service Award recipients. Astonishingly, we gave out 90 awards and there were 124 employees who have been with the Club for over 5 years. We are immensely grateful for the hard-working and diligent team. Our loyal staff is a testament that this place truly is a home away from home

The Board of Directors joined our Service Award Luncheon and helped celebrate our long-standing staff. This year, we awarded pins for employees who have been with the Club for over a decade, bronze for 10+ years, silver for 20+ years, and gold for 30+ years. If you see an Arbutus Club staff member wearing a service pin, please thank them for their continued service. Here are a few employees who are celebrating their 30 to 35-years service anniversary.

An employee who needs no introduction is our amazing Lead Hand, Jojie Misenas. Jojie can light up any room with her bright smile and amazing energy. “I am the kind of person who always has something to say,” Jojie explains. “I’ve stayed at the Club for over 30 years because I’m happy where I am and have always felt respected in my role.”

Jojie first joined the Club in September 1989 as part of the Food & Beverage department, working in banquets, the dining room, and The Bistro to help cover holidays. Later, she was recruited by Christine Piner to work in Reception and the rest is history.

Jojie explains that working at the Club comes with feeling like part of a community, “I love when I see managers helping staff by filling in odd jobs. It shows me that we all work together as a team to get things done," she continues. "This is a team that cares about helping each other out."

"I overhear members saying, ‘Wow, she remembers my name' or when a child looks for me when I’m not at the desk, it means a lot,” explains Jojie. “It reminds me that people may forget what I say to them, but they’ll never forget how I made them feel.”

“Over the years, I have received so much support, love, and kindness from members and staff. I’m really proud to be a part of The Arbutus Club family.”

Meet the Team FEATURED STAFF

Christine Piner director of membership

Our longest serving Senior Manager is our Director of Membership, Christine Piner, who joined The Arbutus Club as an Aerobics Instructor in March 1990. Since then she has had a role in several departments, including Catering, Accounting, the Spa, the Shoppe, and now Membership.

During International Women’s Day, HR held an Inspirational Women Contest, asking staff to nominate a woman at the Club who inspires them. Unsurprisingly, Christine won this contest, with staff sharing that she "exemplifies authentic leadership” and that they “respect and admire her leadership.” Christine has a ton on her plate, but she always makes time to connect with members and staff.

“It’s a great work environment and I love building relationships with our amazing members and wonderful staff," says an enthusiastic Christine. "I’m so proud to be a part of such an incredible community.”

The Club is incredibly lucky to have her, not only as a role model, but also an exemplary leader for 32 years.

Ronnie Shee aka Raymond chef de partie

Ray has been a dedicated and happy Arbutus Club employee since July 1990. He is known for his sleek, neatly coiffed hair and remarkably calm demeanour (even under the stresses of a kitchen, mind you). Ray started as a Prep Cook and was soon promoted to 2nd Cook and then 1st Cook. This year he has been promoted to a distinguished Chef De Partie – it has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Raymond loves that everyone is like family at the Club. “I love cooking for members and staff.” Ray is quite the popular man at the Club, with plenty of friends amongst coworkers and members – largely due to his unwavering positive attitude at work.

In his personal life, Ray makes a goal of travelling to at least one new place each year. He also enjoys gardening, watching trending television shows, and – you guessed it – cooking.

We are so lucky to have such a talented and loyal chef in our kitchen. Cheers to 32 years of extraordinary service.

Gabriela Surgeson

laundry lead hand

Gabe has been a hardworking employee and an enthusiastic leader in our laundry department since March 1991.

“I was raised to be family-oriented and the Club is my family. I came here as a part-timer and I’ll leave as a 'lifer,'" says Gabe jokingly. "If I ever needed anything, I could trust that the Club would do whatever they could to support me...I greatly appreciate the membership; I like watching the children grow up," explains Gabe. "Our membership has always been so kind and respectful. The Club has always taken care of me and has graced me with the life I have.”

Outside of work, Gabe is a music lover. She enjoys going to concerts and dancing. In fact, one time she even bumped into our CEO, Brent Elkington, at an Alice Cooper concert of all places!

Rocking out at a show aside, Gabe also enjoys baking, and makes the most delicious cookies that she often shares with The Arbutus Club staff – her second family.

Mark Schlossarek head bartender

Our Head Bartender, Mark Schlossarek, celebrates his 38th year at the Club. Mark is a veteran in the hospitality industry. He is a knowledgeable leader who always motivates his fellow employees to deliver exceptional customer service.

Brent Elkington, CEO, shares that “If Mark ever left, we would have to replace him with 2 bartenders. He’s one of the best in the industry, he’s a great listener and he always knows how to make a drink.” Christine Piner, Director of Memberships, compares Mark to Sam Malone from Cheers, adding that “Mark is adored by members and staff, and he has a huge group of loyal regulars.”

Mark is kind, modest, and very active, sometimes he rides his bike all the way from Delta to The Arbutus Club. What does Mark love the most about the Club? He loves working with the members and the staff. Mark shares that he is grateful to be part of such an incredible organization.

Meet the Team FEATURED STAFF

Johnny Cervantes

Johnny Cervantes celebrates 35 years at The Arbutus Club. Thank you, Johnny, for your positive attitude and for keeping the Club sparkling. Shelley Garland, Director of Operations shares that “Johnny is a master at his role. If there are any additional tasks, he’s always willing to adapt and accommodate the team.” Johnny loves The Arbutus Club’s environment, and he feels appreciated by management. “Brent always makes an effort to get to know all staff, and that’s something I really appreciate from management.” Johnny is proud that he stayed here for so long and shares that the Club feels like family.

Did you know that Johnny has competed in 8 body building competitions? His last competition was in 2008 when he won overall in his class. He also competed in full contact kick boxing. Johnny offers to help other departments whenever heavy lifting is involved. Johnny is the definition of an outstanding team player.

director of dance

Our longest serving staff member is Marlene Hershfield, the Director of Dance, who has been a passionate leader at the Club for 44 years.

In September 1977, Marlene began with a tiny dance program of 3 students and has transformed the program into the success it is today. Marlene is a natural leader, who has taught hundreds of lucky students.

“I value the relationship with my students,” says Marlene, adding that she has been invited to many of her student’s graduations and weddings.“When you’re invited to be part of people’s life milestones, you become family.”

Marlene explains that it’s the “continuity of long-term staff that make The Arbutus Club so special.”

When Marlene is not at work, she values her family time. She is a loving wife, mother of 3 children, and grandmother of 8 – with her 9th grandchild expected to be born in January 2023.

Congratulations Marlene and thank you so much for sharing your love, leadership, and passion. We are so lucky to have you. ♦

Throwbacks from the CLUB ARCHIVES

Our home away from home is steeped in a rich history. From our early beginnings in the 1960's to the present day, we fondly reminisce on our roots and favourite memories with selections from The Arbutus Club Archives.

Hockey, among other ice sports, have always been an important part of the life and culture of The Arbutus Club. One of the initial catalysts to build was born out of the need for ice time in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

From our Adult Hockey League (AAHL) to our Minor Hockey Avalanche teams, our history is rooted on the ice. Heck, we've even had some of the biggest names in the sport show off their skills – from the revered Mr. Hockey to our favourite Canucks.

Take a brief skate down memory lane with a look back at some of our fondest hockey memories. ♦

meet the athlete

beach ready for sun, sand, and to serve

Life-long member Michaela Jefferson sets her sights on the Peach State to play beach volleyball at Georgia State University

What has been your participation at the Club?

I’ve been a member of the Club through my family ever since I was born - 18 years. I participated in gymnastics for five years, competing at the highest level offered by the Club. I also did the morning volleyball practices with Jeff Ross for a few years and personal training with Yves. Now, I workout at the Club regularly.

When did you first start playing volleyball?

My first time playing volleyball was on the grade five school team. A couple of years later, I began to play beach volleyball during the summers. I played many sports growing up, but volleyball quickly became my favourite. After starting high school, I began to lose interest in the other sports I was playing, and around the end of my grade 10 year, I decided to focus solely on beach volleyball. I knew I wanted to pursue a career beyond high school and see where I could go with it.

Tell us about your journey to join the University of Georgia, NCAA Division 1 for Beach Volleyball next year?

Michaela Jefferson was raised in Vancouver and has been a member of The Arbutus Club since she was born. Like so many of our adolescent members, recreational activities have always been an important part of her life. From participating on teams at West Point Grey Academy to extracurricular programs at the Club, Michaela developed a fervor for sports and a particular talent in volleyball.

Currently completing her first year of studies at UBC, Michaela has set her sights on a move south of the border. Next year, she will transfer to Georgia State University to play NCAA Division 1 Beach Volleyball.

We asked Michaela about participating in beach volleyball, how the Club has enabled her to pursue professional sports, and what her goals are for the near future.

Volleyball has always been one of the most important things in my life and I could never see myself stopping after high school. By the end of grade ten, I knew I wanted to play beach volleyball in university and set a goal for myself to be recruited to an NCAA Division 1 program. However, not long after, the pandemic started. COVID-19 was undoubtedly a massive obstacle in my journey. I was unable to practise, go to the gym, compete, or travel to any recruiting events. It was a discouraging time, but I did what I could and found ways to train and practice on my own or in small groups. I was in contact with various coaches and programs throughout the pandemic, but nothing could move forward until I was able to travel and play in person. When the travel restrictions were lifted in the summer of 2021, I immediately headed down to the U.S. and spent a month there playing in tournaments, visiting schools, and trying to be recruited. Although I was very late to the process compared to other athletes my age, I managed to achieve my goal and received an offer from Georgia State University in the fall of 2021. My recruitment process and overall journey as an athlete have taught me so many valuable lessons that will serve me forever.

22 The Bark winter 2023

Meet the Athlete

What is your favourite part of playing beach volleyball?

Beach volleyball is a unique sport in which it’s just you and your partner on the court. Your coach is only allowed to talk to you before the match and during timeouts, so identifying what’s working and what’s not is completely up to you and your partner. The game goes quickly, so the trust you need to put in each other for feedback and impromptu changes is vital. The bond and connection you establish with your partner is so cool and unlike any sport I’ve played.

How has your experience with the programs at The Arbutus Club helped you in your goal of pursuing university beach volleyball?

Gymnastics at the Club was foundational to my success as an athlete. It was the first sport I fully committed to and I am so grateful to have competed and trained with such a wonderful group of girls and coaching staff. They made the environment fun and driven, which inspired me to work hard. Our coaches supported us but also pushed us hard even though we were young. Seeing my teammates in the gym every night working hard showed me what determination and commitment looks like. The strength and flexibility required as a gymnast also served me in every other sport I played as a kid. Almost 6 years later, I am still using some of the stretches and exercises I was taught in gymnastics. My time with The Arbutus Club team was truly rudimental in my athletic career and I am so thankful to have had such an amazing experience.

What are your goals for 2023?

During my year at UBC, I set the goal of increasing my time in the weight room. I had been lifting to supplement my volleyball practices for a while, but I had never devoted

enough time. It’s difficult to find practice opportunities in the winter, so this goal has been essential for me to stay in shape this year. So far, I have been lifting way more than in previous years and I am already seeing a lot of progress. However, I still have a long way to go. I plan to continue working towards this goal in 2023 so that I can be as prepared as possible when I leave for GSU.

What is the key to perseverance in sports?

I believe that finding a way to create your own opportunities and taking advantage of the opportunities available to you is key to perseverance in sports. During the pandemic and all the obstacles it presented, I was given the choice to persevere or give up on my recruitment process. It would have been easy to give up, but I decided to continue. The only way I was able to carry on was by taking matters into my own hands. I did so by putting together my own tournaments for my teammates and I, turning my garage into a gym, and taking advantage of everything I could. This was instrumental to my success and is important to keep in mind regardless of the pandemic’s effects. ♦

HYDRANGEA PRUNING

Resident Gardener, Ainsley Thompson, walks us through how to prune our hydrangea plants during the wet winter months

Our resident Gardener, Ainsley Thompson, prunes the Hydrangea macrophylla (Mopheads, Rooftop patio) in October to late November after the leaf clean up and bulb planting is over and done with. You can prune macrophylla as early as September all the way up until the later months of winter. Mophead Hydrangeas flower on old wood – this means that flower buds are formed on the previous year's growth so if you were to prune the entire shrub to the ground after flowering you would lose your blooms for the upcoming summer. Some folks like to deadhead spent flowers in the fall while others prefer to wait to deadhead until the end of winter leaving them as a visual interest for the season.

How to prune Mophead Hydrangeas

Deadhead spent blooms, using clean bypass pruners, 1-2 nodes below the flower. Make your cut just above the buds.

Use your bypass pruners to remove any dead, damaged or diseased canes.

Remove approximately 1/3 of the oldest cane growth all the way down to the base of the shrub, this encourages new stronger growth.

*If your hydrangea has become overgrown, leggy and floppy in your garden you may want to consider pruning the shrub low to about 1ft above the ground. You will sacrifice your flowers for the year, but rest assured your Hydrangea macrophylla will be back blooming and better than ever the following summer.

Pruning Hydrangea macrophylla is easy but pruning Hydrangea arborescens is even easier! This variety of Hydrangea blooms on new wood - meaning the blooms are formed on growth of the current season, so you really can't go wrong. Many gardeners prune this variety to 1ft above the ground or 1/3 of the old growth every winter. You can also simply deadhead spent blooms and remove any dead, damaged and diseased canes. By leaving some of the older canes from the previous year you will allow this growth to harden and become woodier, this will add structure to your shrub and will help to support the tender green canes that grow in spring that can be less sturdy when the shrubs bloom. ♦

The fall brings the harvest, now for some that might mean tilling the fields, but for The Arbutus Club member it means reaping the annual benefits of the vine and the barrel. Grapes and Hops signals the true arrival of party season and this year the Club did it bigger and better than ever with a night that would have made the crowd at the Factory blush, Grapes and Hops: Pop Art Edition.

In the tradition of Warhol, the New York Dolls and Liza, this year's Grapes and Hops had a style all its own. Art images and vintage sounds filled the South Gym as members arrived to peruse this year’s vintages, vittles and vixens all in one smashing homage to an era of Studio 54 and Halston. “New York has always seemed the best place to party to me” explained Don Robinson, The Arbutus Club’s Director of Food and Beverage, “and the greatest people at partying were always doing it in the city that never sleeps. We thought it would be fun to bring a little of that glam and feeling to this year’s event while using modern image technology to do it.”

The team at the Club mapped out the event using the Youth Room as the entrance area, the South Gym as the main re- ception hall and the Fireside as the After Lounge. Strut- ting down the red carpet for the step and repeat photo op ushered members into the main party space filled with twenty-five beverage vendors, eleven food stations, five video screens and one fabulous DJ.

Executive Chef Michael Couzelis stomped on it with every- thing from short rib to sushi, steelhead Wellington to roast- ed lamb chops, Ahi tunatinis all wrapped up with a to-go style noodle box for good measure. Even Liza or Twiggy would have admired such gourmand decadence even if Mama Cass was left wanting a ham sandwich on this night. Grape without food is a garish garnish to the soul it was once said and Chef and his brigade left no one feeling less than sated on such a swish evening.

The true stars of the show are really The Arbutus Club’s multitude of beverage partners who come and offer up their libations, sample style, for all to enjoy, and don’t for- get the best part, free of charge. Everything from sparkling to shiraz, new innovative non-alcoholic products to time tested gins, all were proferred, consumable and available for purchase if they passed the member test of taste.

As the DJ turned the tables from songs of the ‘70’s to the more techno beats of today, the multi-generational crowd got down to the more serious business of nocturnal gyrations. Club President Jeff Thorsteinson remarked “It’s so fantastic to see so many members of all ages at this year’s party. So many intermediate members, 25 Year Club members and more. What a great event that now encompasses a broader spectrum of the whole club, all partying together. It’s what the Club is really all about”.

"What a great event

As Friday closed in on Saturday, many members sought refuge in the Fireside After Lounge to sit back and enjoy their preferred beverages served by the dining room staff as DJ Kool Ade supplied the backbone of a chill zone. The Lounge filled with after party revelers ready for shot duty as summoned by well lubricated comrades.

We all have our crushes, but nothing brings our bunch together better than the one night in November when we let it all hang out on the vine, Arbutus style. ♦

SWITCHING GEARS AND HEADING UP THE HIGHWAY

After a last-minute ferry cancellation, the 25 Year Club tour to Cumberland pivots

the sights and sounds of the Sea to Sky

The 25 Year Club’s highly anticipated trip to the historic, former mining town of Cumberland got off to a rocky start when an unforeseen ferry cancellation to Vancouver Island meant a quick switch to a new location.

Tour organiser, Enjoy Travel, quickly adapted their plan and organised a new adventure for the fourteen people who were ‘stranded’. Instead of turning off Highway 99 into Horseshoe Bay, the group continued up the stunning Sea to Sky Highway to Sḵwxwú7mesh, otherwise known as the city of Squamish.

The group ended up with beautiful weather as they ventured up to their first stop, Shannon Falls. Despite it being an un seasonably dry start to autumn, there was still an impressive amount of water thundering down, creating an imposing spectacle of mist and sound.

Next, the group made their way to the Sea to Sky Gondola to enjoy some breathtaking views of the Howe Sound, the majestic coastal forest, and surrounding mountain ranges. Our fearless adventurers tackled the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, enjoying the natural beauty from some of the hiking trails and viewing platforms at the top.

After enjoying a wonderful lunch at the Watershed Grill in Brackendale, the group headed into Old Squamish and explored the shops for the afternoon. On their way back, the tour made pit-stops at Porteau Cove and Lion’s Bay.

Even though the day had a tumultuous start, our 25 Year Club members were thrilled to see the beautiful Squamish views. Many of us who ski or snowboard often make the same drive up to Whistler countless times, but do not get the chance to stop and enjoy the beautiful landmarks along the way. It ended up being the perfect day to enjoy all the smaller, but

In early 2022 the Canadian Red Cross announced that they would be discontinuing their Swimming & Water Safety and Lifeguard training at the end of the year. Their decision to do so was based on the growing need for a global humanitarian effort, and their desire to shift focus in this area. Beginning in January 2023, many facilities, including ours, have had to mix things up when it comes to swim programming.

Many of you would have gone through Red Cross swimming lessons or have had your kids go through them. Whether your experience was when all levels were represented by

colours (yellow, orange, red, maroon, etc.), after the switch to numbered levels in 1996 (when there were 12!), the switch to different numbers (down to 10!), or the addition of preschool levels, the Red Cross program has been an essential part of learning to swim for many. So, we know this change may come not only as a surprise, but with an additional sense of nostalgia and sadness.

However, The Arbutus Club, is in good hands with our training partner, the Lifesaving Society. While we have been training partners with the Lifesaving Society for advanced aquatics for many years, we have now joined forces for swim lessons as well.

Our new program is called Swim for Life. This program is like the Red Cross program, in that it is a complete learn-to-swim program from Parent & Tot, all the way to Leadership and Lifeguarding. While this program is new to us it has been offered nationwide for many years. The program is designed to seamlessly flow between levels into the Lifesaving Society advanced aquatics programs. Similarly, to the Red Cross program, we will be introducing the first three modules of the program: Parent & Tot, Preschool, and Swimmer, in addition to the Lifesaving programs we already offer. From there each module is broken down into levels:

Junior Lifeguard Club

1 Parent &

Tot

The Parent & Tot program focuses on inwater interaction between parent and child to develop water-positive attitudes and skills. These levels are based on child development, not skill, so all level registration is age-based rather than skill-based.

2 Preschool

The Preschool program is geared toward developing in preschool aged children an appreciation and healthy respect for the water. These levels focus on basic aquatic progressions that ensure kids get comfortable in the water and build a foundation of water skills.

3 Swimmer

The Swimmer program, like the preschool program, aims to ensure children develop swim skills and a healthy respect for the water. Progressions in these levels are aimed toward 6-12 year olds, from beginners to developing swimmers. The program includes lots of in-water practice to establish a foundation, and develop solid swim strokes and skills, as well as key drowning prevention messages and safety skills.

What do you mean my child is going from Swim Kids 6 to Swimmer 5?

One of the biggest take aways from the transition is that there are fewer levels in the Swim for Life than the Red Cross Swim Kids program. While the Parent & Tot and Preschool programs both have the same number of levels, which makes for a relatively seamless crossover between levels, the Swim for Life Swimmer Program has only 6 levels in comparison to the Red Cross Swim Kids with 10 levels.

The number levels between Swim for Life and Red Cross systems do not directly translate to one another and are not the same numerically. For example, the corresponding class to Swim Kids 6 is Swimmer 5 in Swim for Life. While some kids have been developing skills in Swim Kids 4, the transition to Swim for Life sees some of the same skills in Swimmer 2 or 3.

It is crucial to emphasize that moving from a higher Swim Kids level to a lower Swim for Life Swimmer level is not a regression in your child’s progress. The key is that there are more items in each Swimmer level to accommodate the same developmental steps in fewer levels. It is important to remember – and to pass on to your kids – that being in a lower Swimmer level than Swim Kids level does not mean that any previous progress is lost or that they are not being challenged.

With fewer levels in Swim for Life, it may also take longer to complete a level. If your child does not complete a Swimmer level on the first try it also does not mean they are not progressing, it might just mean they have a few more skills to master before moving on to the next Swimmer level.

Through this transition we are also making moves to reduce our waitlists by increasing class sizes. We know that small classes have added value to the quality of the lessons, and to maintain exceptional lessons, while providing spaces for more members to participate, we are bringing in some new additions to the aquatics leadership team.

Beginning in January you are going to see a few familiar faces in new roles. Stan Ust, McKayla Cowie, and Ruben Gregg will become our trusty Head Lifeguards. They will be providing an extra level of support for our programs, and extra support for our guards and first aids. If you see our new Head Lifeguards on deck, feel free to come say hello and ask them about their new roles. ♦

With short, drizzly winter days upon us, it's a great time to avoid the elements in the refuge of The Arbutus Club and a perfect time to check out our basketball program. No rain soaked fields or frozen slopes here...just a beautiful warm gym full of eager young athletes learning, training, and playing games.

Over the last decade, basketball in BC has transitioned from being entirely a school based sport played by students in grades 6-12 between December and February, to a sport where kids start younger and have opportunities to play throughout the year. While this means that we now have much more skilled players, it also means that kids who get a head start in playing the game have an advantage when it comes to making teams at schools with competitive programs.

Being able to play with my friends and meet new people is my favourite part of Split Second Basketball. The coaches make it fun teaching us sportsmanship, team chemistry, and games.

8 years playing professionally in Europe, Eric and his wife Lesley returned to Vancouver to raise their 3 children and start Split Second to mentor the next generation of athletes.

Split Second basketball is committed to ensuring that youth don’t miss out on the personal growth opportunities that sports can provide. Through struggle and growth, founder and Head Basketball Coach, Eric Butler, learned the necessity of hard work, resilience and persistence on his way to earning his degree while playing 5 years for the UBC T-Birds. Over the last decade, dozens of fantastic people have coached players in our Split Second Basketball community. Several of these people have been consistently coaching for many years and others have just helped out mentoring our players between Pro seasons overseas. We've got a great crew of coaches at Split Second who work hard to get the right balance of instruction and fun in our Tuesday and Thursday evening Skills Training Classes for children as young as 5 years old. This gives younger athletes a nice entry into a sport and a first step on the Split Second Basketball player pathway.

A LOT OF LOVE IN THE BAG

A Children's Centre tradition, our little ones are hoping to spread some happiness and affection with their Valentine's Day bags

Pre-Covid, one of the many events we love to celebrate in the Children’s Centre is Valentine’s Day. The teachers feel it is important to spotlight this day to encourage each child to feel special and this is how we do it: We start off by creating a unique Valentine’s Day bag, usually a heart shaped one. The children spend time making it personal and beautiful with collage items like lace, buttons, stickers, glitter, and more.

Prior to the holiday, families are asked to prepare Valentine cards, treats or small gifts for each of their friends. When the day arrives, children are invited to come into a decorated classroom, where they play games, sing songs, read stories, and enjoy treats. But, the most important of all, before the day ends, each student shares a valentine with each of their friends. They go around and place the card/treat into their friend’s special bag. As the children watch their own Valen tine’s bag ‘grow’, representing just how much they are loved. This sure sends warm fuzzies their way.

As the world gets back to a regular routine, we are looking for ward to showering our students with love on Valentine's Day in our Arbutus Club Preschool programs just like old times.

Dance

TRENDING ON SOCIAL

Dance has become a significant way in which we build community online and social media routines are producing newfound creativity

The amazing dance influencers on Tik-Tok and Instagram have really turned a spotlight on the fun, social connections, physical skill, and self confidence that dance can offer to young people. Some of the most viral dance videos are a blend of dance styles and musical genres, allowing young viewers to explore and study the diversity of the artform in an easily accessible fashion.

As the lines between various genres become blurred in both music and dance, many choreographers have newfound inspiration. Often viewers of viral dances ask “What kind of dance is that?” and "Where can I learn to do that too?” For instance, hip-hop and breakdance are some of the most popular styles of dance right now and The Arbutus Club is proud to offer classes in both styles.

Breakdance is very acrobatic, with fast foot work and an emphasis on free styling on the dance floor, where the b-boys and b-girls show off their personal style and make up their routines on the spot with moves they have mastered as their dance crew cheers them on. It is the most iconic style of hip hop developed in NY in the 1970s.

Hip hop classes emphasize choreographed routines that can alternately, flow, or “pop and lock,” and the dance crew works together to synchronize their routines. This is often more performance based and regularly participants or students travel to dance competitions/conventions, creating a substantial social bond with their crew.

Both styles share music, culture, history, aesthetics, and are immensely valuable in their ability to build confidence, unique style, coordination, rhythm, respect, cooperation in young people everywhere in the world. The global popularity of dance across various social media platforms proves that dancing can bring us together while having a tremendous amount of fun.

With the Arbutus Academy of Dance members have the unique opportunity to learn trending dance techniques in a familiar place and amongst a range of different skill levels. ♦

Karate

The Arbutus Club hosted the first Shito Ryu Karate workshop (Gasshuku) in Canada this past October. It was an honour to host this international workshop, which highlighted the continuing growth of the Karate department at the Club. Starting in September 2000, Sensei (teacher) Alice Chung began with a small group of practitioners from a different system and built up a successful program that now has close to one hundred members involved.

With the onset of the pandemic many sports and activities came to a halt with social distancing and other preventative restrictions. For Shito Ryu karate, the pandemic postponed two world championships scheduled in Japan, preventing members of the karate program at The Arbutus Club from being promoted to their next belt levels.

Following the relaxing of Covid restrictions, Alice Chung Sensei reached out to the Karate Committee and suggested hosting a workshop for karate at the Club. The committee brought the idea forward to the Recreation Services department and so began the start of the first Shito Ryu Gasshuku in Canada.

To promote this workshop several masters were invited to share their knowledge and skills to the participants. In total the following masters attended: Mabuni Tsukasa Soke (headmaster of Shito Ryu from Japan), Sakai Kazuo Hanshi

mately 75 people joined from both The Arbutus Club and from other clubs in British Columbia, Washington, California, Colorado, Mexico, Australia, and Japan. The workshop covered the basics of Shito Ryu karate and stressed that the techniques should be strong

The workshop ended with a black belt grading that The Arbutus Club members participated in. Successful members were Emmeline and Audrey Braun, and Sophie Kuah who were promoted to Shodan (1st degree black belt); and Ashley Braun promoted to Nidan (2nd degree black belt). Alice Chung Sensei was also promoted to Rokudan (6th degree black belt) and awarded the title of Kyoshi (professor).

All visiting masters thought that the first Shito Ryu Gasshuku was a major success. With the beautiful venue, the experts’ tutelage, and the number of participants; the workshop was seen as one of the best and certainly a formidable premier event for Canada. The next opportunity for The Arbutus Club members to take part will be the International Championships next summer in Osaka, Japan. ♦

(Mexico), Roberto Geronimo Kyoshi (Mexico), and Magdaleno Lopez Renshi (Mexico). For Canada there are currently four masters with three of them in attendance: William Chung Kyoshi, Alice Chung Kyoshi, and Garson Ho Renshi. With all these masters in attendance, this premier event was surely a success.

The workshop fell on our Thanksgiving weekend, but this did not hinder the attendance for the event. Approxi-

and consistent. Shito Ryu karate is famous for its variety of pre-arranged forms (kata) and much of the sessions throughout the weekend reflected this area of specialty. Sparring was also extensively covered with pre-arranged sparring (ippon kumite) and sparring techniques, including footwork and combinations. The workshops began each day with a one-hour session devoted to our junior members, with the rest of the day devoted to our seniors.

For 20 years Lena has been involved as a volunteer, community art project leader and instructor in various art programs and events for children and adults across Metro Vancouver.

Lena's creative practice is diverse: photography, mixed media, installation, painting, drawing, ceramics, and poetry. In her classes for children, participants acquire more than basic painting or drawing skills. Students learn how to calm their busy minds, focus, and to tap into their imagination without gadgets. We constantly watch the world around us, missing a lot while running through our hectic days. Art class is the time to slow down, to induce contemplation and mindfulness, to observe and process visual stimuli or one's own images and thoughts. The most important part of the art process is thoughtful quietude. Students are encouraged to pause, focus, think and feel, and to process their ideas and emotions. Mistakes are seen as unexpected opportunities and are resolved creatively. Lena is trying to transform frustration, insecurity, and fear of failure into resilience, persistence, and confidence.

Every year brings a different dynamic. New and returning students can expect fresh lessons adapted to each new group. Lena's small group lessons allow more opportunities for oneon-one work. Children are encouraged to seek personal expression. Before each class they have a chance to hear a bit about the subject and see the artist famous for describing the same. The emphasis in art classes differs from the one in art therapy. The goal is to learn new technique, while learning a whole lot more. ♦

STRENGTH TRAINING AND AGING HEALTHILY

Our Fitness Centre focuses on strength training and physical activity to help you maintain a healthy, happy body.

The human body is an amazing organism able to heal and repair itself. It can keep improving no the matter time or age. However, time does affect the body in different ways: bone development, hormonal changes, cardio-respiratory conditioning, and muscle loss – just to name a few. It is crucial to recognize that the way we take care of ourselves, both physically and mentally, will help us maintain a healthy body as we age.

Research has shown that regular physical activity and exercise for seniors helps improve mental and physical health, both of which will help you maintain your independence as you age. Well-designed training programs will activate mechanical

and chemical signals that will have a deep effect on hormone interactions in the body. One of the famous hormones that you might have heard about are endorphins. Endorphins interact with different receptors in the body and are commonly known because they release the “feel good” response. These hormones help relieve stress, improve sleep, and promote the feeling of satisfaction. Other important hormones like testosterone, dopamine, serotonin, and many more have a positive influence in the way we perceive the world and ourselves.

Beginning in January 2023 the Club will be offering programs specifically geared with our senior members in mind, helping them get moving safely and effectively in our Fitness Centre.

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT ADULTS OF AGE 65 AND OLDER GET AT LEAST:

150 minutes of a moderate intensity activity every day or an equivalent of 75 minutes a week of vigorous activity.

At least two days a week of muscle strengthening and healthy movement patterns to improve balance, coordination, and core strength.

ACUPUNCTURE FOR EFFECTIVE STRESS RELIEF

Acupuncture works to help the body recover from acute and chronic stress to restore balance in the body

We all know that chronic stress is not good for our physical body or mental state, but in our modern world it tends to be unavoidable. Stress affects all systems of the body - musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems. We can see and feel the negative impacts of stress on our sleep, energy, digestion, immune system, mental health and our physical bodies which often manifest as headaches, skin issues, muscular tension, TMD, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Our acupuncturist, Lisa Matsuzaki, treats stress and its effects on the body daily. In Traditional Chinese Medicine terms, she looks to ensure free flow of qi and blood in the body to achieve balance. In Western terms, Lisa works on the nervous system.

Acupuncture uses tiny needles to tap into the HPA axis (hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal axis) to calm the sympathetic nervous systems (SNS) fight or flight reaction and wake up the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) to active rest and digest. Acupuncture acts on the SNS to decrease the production of cortisol and adrenaline which in turn decreases anxiety, regulates breathing, affects heart rate variability, improves sleep, and releases tension from the body.

Each patient treatment plan is different with specific acupuncture points selected depending on their symptoms. But the goal of each treatment is the same, acupuncture is working to help the body to recover from acute and chronic stress to restore balance in the body. ♦

DID YOU KNOW?

You don’t have to have anything wrong to get an acupuncture treatment. One of acupuncture’s strengths is its ability to prevent things from going wrong. As a preventative medicine, acupuncture boosts the immune system, promotes healthy circulation, aids in organ and cell detoxification, decreases inflammation, and helps your body respond to stress in a healthy way.

SPIN INTO SPRING SKATING

From learning to skate all the way to senior levels, the Club's skating program has multiple pathways for you to glide your way onto the ice

We are looking forward to the spring term of skating. This term we are pleased to offer members even more opportunities to get on the ice!.

Learn to Skate

We have added several Learn to Skate sessions to the Winter 2023 program offerings, that are suitable for those who want to learn the fundamentals of ice skating. No previous skating experience is necessary. The program will follow Skate Canada’s CanSkate curriculum, which is a series of balance, control, and agility skills designed to prepare skaters for all ice sports.

Junior Achievers

For skaters interested in building on their skills from Learn to Skate, we have our Junior Achievers program. This program is figure skating specific, focusing on entry into Skate Canada’s Star Skate system. All classes will be a group instruction focusing on the five components of figure skating: stroking, field moves, jumps, spins, and musical interpretation. Junior Achievers is perfect for skaters who want to challenge themselves in their figure skating development or for those who are wanting to explore competitive figure skating.

Junior/Senior Figure Skating

The Junior/Senior figure skating program is for skaters advancing from Junior Achievers that are in the Skate Canada test and competitive system. This program incorporates a mix of group enrichment classes and private/semi-private lessons with instruction from coaches that have competitive figure skating coaching experience and are equipped to provide skaters with world-class instruction. The syllabus touches on the free skate, interpretive, dance, and skills components of Skate Canada programs. The training philosophy will adopt the long-term athlete development Learn to Train module. ♦

SEE YOU ON THE ICE.

For Skating program inquiries, please contact the Director of Skating, Kathryn Kang at kkang@arbustclub.com

I

t’s not always a good idea to prepare for your next tournament match by increasing your practice hours and drilling yourself into the ground, in the days leading up to your first match. Continuing to practise the same amount you have been for the last 3 months, is your ticket to success.

Proper preparation before playing your tournament matches can make all the difference in how well you play. Eating well and getting the proper amount of rest will go a long way.

1 Scouting opponents –to do or not to do?

If you’re heading into a big match or tournament, spend less time worrying about your opponent and more time focusing on yourself. You can find out just about anything you want to know about the opponents. Look over their results and make comparisons until it’s all so confusing that you’re dizzy overthinking things. What does this accomplish? It makes things quite uncertain for yourself; after all, there is no way of knowing everything they’ve done in every single one of those matches–it would be exhausting and not get you to your optimal performance state. Instead, take the time to make a game plan based on your strengths and how you will use them to your benefit. Setting yourself up with a winning strategy is a first and most important step in achieving success on the court. Choose where you want to attack your opponent and what type of shots are your strengths.

TOURNAMENT PREPARATION 101

2 Always get ready to compete!

Warming up is a crucial part of any successful tournament players routine. And the best way to get warmed up for your next round, is by doing some general warm-up exercises like movement games and warming up at low intensity. Earlier in the day, get moving, even if it is only for 5 or 10 minutes. Closer to your match, if you can get a court and hit for 15-25 minutes, that will really help you in preparing for your match.

3 Remain active

The last thing you want to do before a match is let your body cool down once it has already warmed up. If you leave too much time between your warmup and your match, your body will go back to relax mode. To avoid this from happening and stay in tune with your mind and body, try moving to your favourite tunes, jumping up and down, skipping, jogging at a fast pace, or walking around quickly.

4 Remember why we play this great sport

We play to have fun. Find a partner you enjoy spending time with, and you’re closer to winning immediately. If you’re ready to support and pump each other up through the ups and downs of competition, you’re bound to perform better in the long run! ♦

Tennis
It’s true, the more you practise, the better you’ll play!

Let the games begin at The Arbutus Club Olympics family event. Sports fans of all ages will have a ball at our Olympics-themed carnival event. This is a members only event and we ask that members register all members of their family attending.

Registration details will be provided in the Spring 2023 Recreation Services Programs Brochure

NEW YOUTH PROGRAMS

Youth Activity Committee

The first of our new initiatives is the Youth Activity Committee. Starting in Winter 2023, our Youth and Family Coordinator, Chloe Ekkebus will meet with a group of 15 to 20 teenage members once every 3 months to discuss changes around the Club, gain insight from the teen members, and brainstorm ideas that will inspire positive change in the Shaughnessy Room. The primary objective for the committee is to help foster community for our younger members, while valuing the input they provide.

For more information or if you have questions regarding Youth programs, please contact the Youth and Family Coordinator, Chloe Ekkebus, at cekkebus@arbutusclub.com.

If you would like to join the email list for updates on new events and upcoming programs, please request in your email to join the Youth Room mailiing list.

Event Volunteer Program

Another exciting new program coming to the Shaughnessy Room is the Youth Room Event Volunteer program. Starting in January, teens aged 13–18 can apply to become a Youth Room Event Volunteer. The Youth Coordinator will meet and choose 25 teens to be volunteers for events until June 2023. This process will allow for teen members to gain experience working alongside The Arbutus Club Youth Leaders and engaging with members. Applications will be opening in December and individuals will be contacted in January.

Several members already joined the program beginning in October of last year, and have already helped in the Glamarama Spa Night, Nightmare on Nanton, and the Out of this World Halloween Party. These events could not have run as well as they did without the help from our member volunteers Owen Louie, Kate Louie, and Jake Heine. ♦

Please note that priority will be given to members in grade 10 – 12 to gain volunteer hours for high school and graduation.

Volunteers will only be accepted for helping with events and not day to day operations such as Junior Ambassador, Camps, Programs, or Youth Room Supervision

A NEW TREATMENT NOW AVAILABLE AT THE SPA

THE SPA AT ARBUTUS is thrilled to announce a new machine, the Zemits LumAktiva LED Light Therapy. A non-invasive treatment that helps improve the skin.

LED light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that enters the skin’s layers to improve the skin. This therapy treats various skin conditions and concerns, such as acne, sun damage and fine lines. The Zemits Lumia Activa Led Light Therapy comes with different settings, including red light LED therapy and blue light LED therapy, which are sometimes used in combination.

Red Light. A therapeutic technique that uses red low-level wavelengths of light to treat common skin issues, such as wrinkles, scars etc.

Blue Light. When a particularly extreme acne breakout happens, it can feel like nothing works fast enough to get us back in the clear. Blue LED Light Therapy for acne is a tremendous treatment option for faster results.

InfraRed Light Therapy. This therapeutic technique has been shown to increase the natural production of collagen, have an anti-aging effect on human skin cells, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also helps reduce inflammation and improve wound or scar healing. ♦
