With short, drizzly winter days upon us, it's a great time to avoid the elements in the refuge of The Arbutus Club and a perfect time to check out our basketball program. No rain soaked fields or frozen slopes here...just a beautiful warm gym full of eager young athletes learning, training, and playing games. Over the last decade, basketball in BC has transitioned from being entirely a school based sport played by students in grades 6-12 between December and February, to a sport where kids start younger and have opportunities to play throughout the year. While this means that we now have much more skilled players, it also means that kids who get a head start in playing the game have an advantage when it comes to making teams at schools with competitive programs.
Split Second basketball is committed to ensuring that youth don’t miss out on the personal growth opportunities that sports can provide. Through struggle and growth, founder and Head Basketball Coach, Eric Butler, learned the necessity of hard work, resilience and persistence on his way to earning his degree while playing 5 years for the UBC T-Birds. After 8 years playing professionally in Europe, Eric and his wife Lesley returned to Vancouver to raise their 3 children and start Split Second to mentor the next generation of athletes.
Being able to play with my friends and meet new people is my favourite part of Split Second Basketball. The coaches make it fun teaching us sportsmanship, team chemistry, and games.

Over the last decade, dozens of fantastic people have coached players in our Split Second Basketball community. Several of these people have been consistently coaching for many years and others have just helped out mentoring our players between Pro seasons overseas. We've got a great crew of coaches at Split Second who work hard to get the right balance of instruction and fun in our Tuesday and Thursday evening Skills Training Classes for children as young as 5 years old. This gives younger athletes a nice entry into a sport and a first step on the Split Second Basketball player pathway.
The team has upcoming Spring Break Camps for participants 7-13 years old. For more information visit arbutusclub.com to view the Recreation Services Programs Brochure. ♦
