SWITCHING GEARS AND HEADING UP THE HIGHWAY

After a last-minute ferry cancellation, the 25 Year Club tour to Cumberland pivots to take in the sights and sounds of the Sea to Sky

The 25 Year Club’s highly anticipated trip to the historic, former mining town of Cumberland got off to a rocky start when an unforeseen ferry cancellation to Vancouver Island meant a quick switch to a new location. Tour organiser, Enjoy Travel, quickly adapted their plan and organised a new adventure for the fourteen people who were ‘stranded’. Instead of turning off Highway 99 into Horseshoe Bay, the group continued up the stunning Sea to Sky Highway to Sḵwxwú7mesh, otherwise known as the city of Squamish. The group ended up with beautiful weather as they ventured up to their first stop, Shannon Falls. Despite it being an unseasonably dry start to autumn, there was still an impressive amount of water thundering down, creating an imposing spectacle of mist and sound. Next, the group made their way to the Sea to Sky Gondola to enjoy some breathtaking views of the Howe Sound, the majestic coastal forest, and surrounding mountain ranges. Our fearless adventurers tackled the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge, enjoying the natural beauty from some of the hiking trails and viewing platforms at the top. After enjoying a wonderful lunch at the Watershed Grill in Brackendale, the group headed into Old Squamish and explored the shops for the afternoon. On their way back, the tour made pit-stops at Porteau Cove and Lion’s Bay. Even though the day had a tumultuous start, our 25 Year Club members were thrilled to see the beautiful Squamish views. Many of us who ski or snowboard often make the same drive up to Whistler countless times, but do not get the chance to stop and enjoy the beautiful landmarks along the way. It ended up being the perfect day to enjoy all the smaller, but interesting, places that our neighbouring town has to offer. Next time, Cumberland! ♦
