The Art League develops the artist through education, exhibition, and a stimulating, supportive environment, while sharing the experience of the visual arts with the community.

The Art League is a multifaceted, 501(c)(3) nonprofit visual arts organization. Since our founding in 1954, The Art League has used the visual arts to bring together people from a wide variety of talents, experiences, and communities.

Through this work, we have become the largest visual arts organization of our kind in Virginia. Every year, we fill more than 10,000 class seats, offer exhibit opportunities for nearly 1,000 artists, and connect with a broad audience through a diverse range of artistic programming.

Membership

To enhance The Art League member experience and to honor all those with a significant committment to our League community, Art League Membership is now a benefit that comes with engaging in one, or all, of the following ways:

1. Paying the exhibiting artist dues in the gallery (Active Exhibiting Artist Member)

2. Donating to our Annual Fund $125 or above (Active Donor Member)

3. Enrolling in at least one course in the last five academic terms AND taking 12 or more courses in the past four years at the School (Active Student Member)

Become an Exhibiting Artist

The Art League Gallery is a member gallery providing artists with the opportunity to have their work judged by esteemed arts professionals, and to compete to exhibit their work in one of the largest galleries in the Washington metro area. The Gallery hosts monthly juried shows, solo artist exhibits, student/faculty shows, and special exhibitions and fundraisers. Anyone can become an exhibiting artist.

The Store

The Art League Store sells supplies at a discounted price to League students and members. Every effort is made to stock class items and popular materials for the fine artist. Our staff of professional artists are happy to guide you in your selection. Our store is located in room 217 of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The store may close a half-hour for lunch.

The school office is on the 2nd floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC), room 216. The office is open 10:00am–5:00pm, Monday through Saturday. Classes are held in the TFAC and the Madison Annex (808 N Fairfax St).

Classes

The Art League School is a non-accredited institution and is open to all. A full range of daytime, evening, and weekend courses is offered in all of the fine arts and many fine crafts. Professional artists teach our classes. The school also offers youth classes and summer camps for ages five through seventeen.

Workshops

League instructors and distinguished visiting instructors offer concentrated week or weekend sessions in specific media, techniques, and subjects. Travel workshops to international and domestic locations are also offered year-round. For information on travel workshops, contact Margaret Cerutti at 703-549-5450 or margaretc@theartleague.org.

Student/Faculty Show

The public is invited to attend our annual Student/Faculty Show in The Art League Gallery, February 20–March 3, 2024. Receiving for submissions is Presidents’ Day–Monday, February 19, 2024. There is a closing reception held on Sunday, March 3. 2024.

Registering for Courses

You may register for workshops at any time.

Here are three steps to enroll:

1. Browse the catalog or website to find classes, workshops, or camps. Ongoing additions and corrections are published online at www.theartleague.org/classes.

2. Enroll online using Visa, Mastercard, or Discover, or enroll by mail, fax, or in person. If enrolling by mail, fill out the registration form and send it with your payment made out to The Art League School at 105 North Union Street Alexandria, VA 22314.

3. Upon receipt of your class request and payment in full you are registered, unless the class is full or cancelled. If the class is full or cancelled, you will be notified and are entitled to a full refund.

Registration Policy

Late registrations are honored for available classes only. A fee of $20 is assessed for every transfer from one class to another. All transfers must be made before the third meeting of the class. No class refunds are given unless the School office is notified by the Friday before the start of the term (see calendar on the inside cover). No workshop or camp refunds are given unless we are notified at least ten days before their respective start dates. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $20 included in tuition.

Weather

In case of bad weather, check our website home page, call the school office, or tune in for announcements on TBD (WJLA ABC 7 and NewsChannel 8) or WTOP 103.5 FM.

Holidays

Classes do not meet on Thanksgiving, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, or July 4. These holidays, or any additional days designated by the instructor, will have make-up dates.

School Policy

No student is denied admission on the basis of race, sex, or ethnicity. The Art League reserves the option of refusing admission to any person deemed incompatible with any class group due to disruptiveness, or for any impediment to the learning process of the group as a whole.

Safety precautions and proper use of art materials and chemicals are rigorously practiced. Please use discretion when registering for classes, as The Art League cannot be held responsible for adverse reactions that may arise in some individuals. If you are pregnant, or think you may be, please consult a physician before registering. Students may not photograph or film models, teacher demonstrations, or critiques.

The Art League reserves the right to substitute an appropriate instructor when necessary. The Art League is not liable for personal injury or loss of property, including the artwork of enrolled students. Ceramics Department Policies: To use open studio hours, students must be enrolled for the current term and attend at least half of their class meetings. School policy prohibits using the studio for commercial purposes. The League reserves the right to limit privileges for students using the studio for large-scale production. Location

Our school office is located in the Torpedo Factory Art Center (TFAC) at 105 North Union Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Classes are also held at our Madison Annex location, with entrances at either 305 Madison Street and 808 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Metro

Our closest metro station is the King Street stop on the Blue and Yellow lines. From here, students may take the King Street Trolly to the Torpedo Factory Art Center or the DASH bus Old Town Circulator (OTC) 30 or OTC31 eastbound to the Madison Annex at the intersection of Madison and North Fairfax Streets.

Parking

For students in the TFAC classrooms, there is inexpensive evening and weekend parking at the City Hall lot at 108 North Fairfax Street. Free 2- and 3-hour on-street parking may be found in the neighborhood surrounding the Madison Annex.

Covid Policy

The Art League continues classroom safety protocols of increased cleaning and active air filtration. League class participants may choose to wear a mask or not. The Art League holds the right to reinstate any policies in the case of a surge in Covid cases.

From satire to journalism, comics are a great way to share stories. Learn to share your stories through comics, explore the fundamentals of creating graphic narratives, including drawing basics, scripting, timing, history, international styles, production techniques, and a broad range of applications for sequential art. The class culminates in a group book of collective work.

From the New Yorker to the daily paper, serious or funny, singlepanel or short-sequence strips, comics of all types express so much with so little! Explore the awareness of simple character design, some basic composition, and a consideration of timing. Graphite Drawing Techniques

Learn how to take advantage of graphite’s many possibilities. Subject matter includes simple still life, landscape from photos, and personal choice when applicable. Expect a richer understanding of drawing, blending tools, and line usage. Some basic drawing experience is helpful. No smell, mess, large expense or standing at an easel required.

The Language of Line

This course offers a vital step for artists who would like to “loosen up”. Line variations in contour, hatching/cross-hatching, line systems, texture, movement, color interplay, and overall rhythm and design are covered. Paper varieties and surfaces and their effects on various media are shown.

The foundation of strong imagery is design–a vital element to all art forms. Students learn to recognize and control movement within the picture plane through study of shape, value, pattern, line, texture, and color in multiple formats. Most exercises are in abstract form, which are then related to both abstract and representational art. No previous drawing experience is needed.

Composition & Design Continued

This course builds on the concepts learned in Composition and Design Fundamentals. Representation, depth, transparency, movement, narrative and color are added to the design equation. Students utilize these visual concepts to create more intensive, emotionally powerful, cohesive works of art. Group critiques enrich the class. Previous experience in individually chosen media is required. Acrylics, oil bars, oil and chalk pastels, and abstract artists are welcome. No oil paint permitted.

Waxy Media

Lisa Semerad

Waxy media include oil pastels, colored pencils, oil bars, pigment sticks and grease pencils, which have varied degrees of transparency and body of thickness. Depending on which medium is used, artists can create anything from fine detail to texture effects. Solvents, oil painting media, and the technique of scraping to reveal lower layers are covered. Learn about permanent primers, which facilitate corrections and longevity of the artwork. A sound knowledge of drawing and value is helpful.

Landscape Perspective (Online)

Presenting tips, tricks and principles of perspective! In 2D artwork, all perception of 3D space and distance is an illusion. This course covers the tools we have that beyond One- or TwoPoint perspective. We start with the most important elements and finish with special situations. Instructor demos are provided. Students use the media of their choice. Class taught via Zoom.

This class focuses on simplifying the complex elements found in nature, building a solid composition, and choosing good subject matter. Students use design, value, color, light patterns, and atmospheric perspective to explore the landscape. Demonstrations, critiques, discussion of materials and techniques, and personal attention are included. Students may be new to plein air and use any medium they are well-versed in.

Long poses allow for focused, complete, or experimental study. Using clothed and nude models, poses range from three to six hours long. Artistic Anatomical Drawing

Students learn the importance of anatomy for creating accurate depictions of the human figure. Recognizing anatomical landmarks on the surface of the body and how flesh is built around them. Anatomical structures are broken down and grouped into basic shapes that can be easily applied to the figure. Model fees are extra.

Style, Expression, and Technique

Render the human figure and portrait with an emphasis on clarity, craftsmanship, and expression. Participants study the form, function, and dynamics of materials ranging from red chalk to watercolor. Learn anatomy and structure through line and tone. Great masterworks are used to inspire and instruct while facilitating a lively and expressive approach to drawing. The class includes six studio classes and one online critique session. Model fees are extra.

Capture lively, expressive figure drawings while understranding essential anatomy for the artist. Explore hidden curvilinear elements in the human figure. Learn the figure and pictorial space of classical realism and abstraction in figure drawing through traditional, contemporary, and mixed-media materials. Expressive Figure Drawing: Inspirations From The Spanish Flamenco With Mixed Media

Capture dynamic figure drawings inspired by the rhythms of the Spanish Flamenco. A step-by-step approach allows clear understanding and growth at any level. Discover hidden curvilinear elements throughout the figure and the pictorial space with classical and contemporary materials. Students are encouraged to push their boundaries and limits. Emphasis is placed on careful observation of gesture and anatomical structure, line quality, and composition. Model fees are extra.

The Costumed Portrait in Drawing and Painting

From Vermeer to Sargent, artists use elaborately costumed subjects to accentuate the drama of their art. Explore the beauty and complexity of this portrait tradition and the features of models dressed in both period and contemporary attire. Methods of depicting the light and shadow on the form are covered. Techniques such as three color portrait drawing and alla prima painting are studied and applied. “Shodo” is an ancient form of calligraphy developed in China. From this, Japanese calligraphers devised a new system called “hiragana.” Learn how to write characters and their stroke order and meanings. Silk screen printing can fill a page with color in a single stroke, or build layer upon transparent layer of intricate detail. Screen prints may be vibrant or subtle, sharp-edged, or brushy and textured. Students create hand-painted, hand-cut, and photographic stencils, and then print through them using water based non-toxic inks. Lab fee of $50, payable to the instructor, covers supplies and screen.

Etching is a technique that allows the printmaker to achieve wide tonal range and unlimited detail. Jumpstart in Silk Screen Printing

Students explore the silkscreen medium for twelve focused hours. Returning students should come with a project in mind. Have you ever wondered how animated movies are made, or wanted to make one yourself? Ifso, Claymation camp is for you! In this camp, participants learn the basics of frame-by-frame clay-animation and video production. Students work in teams to write scripts, draw a storyboards, design clay characters, and build a setting for their film. After those steps, students take the photos for their frame-by-frame film and record voices for their characters. By the end of the week, the instructor and participants finalize their claymation productions and share with friends and family.

Raku Firing Workshop

Experience the Raku firing process and learn about its vibrant possibilities. Join us on Friday evening from 5:00pm to 8:00pm to glaze and prepare your already bisqued pieces and return on Saturday from 9:00am to 3:00pm for the firing. Each participant may bring two to four small or medium pieces of previously bisque-fired ware. Students who are more familiar with the studio can bring their ready to fire pieces on Saturday morning if they prefer. Glazes are included with the firing fee. Approaches to Tile Making

This class is designed as a thoughtful approach to tile making. Design, planning and repetition is considered in conjunction with a variety of construction techniques. Modeling the tile as relief, multiples by use of press molds, die cutting and a full variety of other approaches enhance your tile vocabulary. Explore the art and craft of Raku and other low fire ceramic techniques. The Art League Jewelry and Metals program covers most aspects of designing and creating art jewelry and small metal objects. Each class is suited for beginners, unless noted. The classroom is fully equipped with an extensive assortment of tools and machines. Personal tools and supplies are discussed during the first class. A $20 lab fee is payable at the first class. Learn how to design and create stunning art jewelry from silver sheet, wire, and other metals. Traditional tools and their uses are covered in depth. Mokume Gane: Wood Grain Pattern in Metal

Mokume Gane, or wood grain metal, is a traditional Japanese technique in which two or more different metals are meticulously cleaned, alternately stacked, compressed and heated to a high temperature. Participants learn a low tech, but efficient method to make Mokume Gane using a refractory brick mini furnace and soldering torch to fire the billet. Students make their own billet the first day. There is a $150 materials fee that is paid to the instructor.

Ukrainian Pysanka Workshop

Participants make Ukrainian Easter eggs, called Pysankas, which are full of symbolism and color. The Pysanka is an ancient art form that celebrates events of rebirth in nature and life. The surface designs on the eggs consist of beeswax melted with a candle, and vibrant dyes, and are applied with an instrument made of wood and copper called a kistka. Each student must purchase a $25 Pysanka Egg Decorating Kit from the instructor.

Transparent watercolor is ideally suited to represent water. A broad wash creates the underpainting on which the ripples and waves are painted to create motion and interest. The “Magic of Watercolor” is based on its transparency. A wash of watercolor sparkles because the white paper shows through the thin coating of pigment left behind when the water evaporates. However, just as we want light values and dark, complementary color contrasts, and more, we also want opaque and transparent areas in our paintings. One way to get effective opaque areas is to employ a kind of watercolor called gouache. This workshop studies the use of opaque pigments. Held via Zoom.

The Portrait on Copper

Landscape Perspective Workshop

In two-dimensional artwork, all perception of 3D space and distance is an illusion. This course covers the tools we have to create this illusion. It is much more than a One- or Two-Point perspective. We start with the most important elements and finish with special situations. Instructor demonstrations are done in pastel, charcoal, and computer, however, students may use the media of their choice. For the class exercises, only sketch paper and pencil or charcoal are needed.

Intermediate Fluid Art

Enrollment is restricted to those who completed the beginner’s workshop.* Learn to use fluid art techniques and various acrylic mediums. Explore basic techniques such as “chain pulls” and “dirty pours”. Complete six canvases over a two-day period. Techniques are demoed with an emphasis on symmetry and composition. Work with special mediums such as molding paste, mica, tar gel, or glazing agents. A $30 fee is payable to the instructor for use of the shared supplies.

Lessons from the Masters (Online)

(Intermediate to Advanced) Past painters have much to teach us about all aspects of art. Through a combination of art history and painting exercises, students look at the techniques and approaches of four master painters from Renaissance to modern time, focusing on their use of composition, color and narrative. Students explore the work of masters Giotto, Chardin, Cezanne, Richard Diebenkorn and the many painters who were influenced by them, through slide-talks, in-class exercises, demonstrations, and at-home painting exercises. Watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil are welcome.

Painting Birds and Flowers in Colored Ink

This intuitive workshop teaches the creative process: developing ideas that are not pictured in your mind but come from a process of experimentation and discovery, analysis and revision. Fast Figure Painting

What color should you use? How do you mix it? An understanding of color theory is essential for students making the transition from drawing to painting. Anyone can get the hang of welding for metal sculpture! This workshop is ideal for beginners who want to try welding. Students create a fun sculpture project while learning the basics of gas welding and use of metalworking tools. Participants should wear long cotton/denim pants, closed shoes, and a long sleeved shirt. A $55 materials fee is payable to the instructor.

Finishing with Patina Plaster, Clay, and Wood

The patina is an important element of a cast and determines the enjoyment of both eye and touch. It protects work from dust and makes the cast more attractive. During this intensive workshop, students learn aspects of painting and patination to develop the right finish, color, and texture on a sculptural artwork through lots of hands-on experimentation and demos. Students are required to bring their own pieces to work on during the workshop. A materials fee of $50 is payable to the instructor.

Plaster Casting and Mold Making

In this step-by-step 2 day intensive workshop, students learn the art of plaster casting, rubber mold making and waste mold making. This is a valuable course for sculptors who wish to make multiples or cast in other materials. Detailed guides and demos will be provided by the instructor. Students are welcome to bring their own simple shaped works or create small, simple pieces at the beginning of the workshop for casting purposes. A materials fee of $50 is payable to the instructor.

Begin with armature building and clay application techniques and continue through principles of measuring, structure anatomy, composition, expression and surface finish.
