In Suzanne's Words

The habitual back to school, and I’ll see you in September take on special meaning in Qatar with the annual migration to holiday lands engaging a majority of the population over summer months. Typically filled with fresh beginnings, reunions with old friends and anticipation of new projects and ventures, September’s welcoming return to the fast lane will materialize later in the month at the culmination of Ramadan festivities. Eid is looking pretty exciting with first ever entertainer appearances in Qatar. Qatar Happening caught up with Steve Lawler in anticipation of his gig on 22 September. Plenty of buzz and activity happening around town as preparations continue for October’s major events, ROTA Gala Dinner, Doha Tribeca Film Festival and the launching of Qatar Happening Lifestyle Awards. Keep checking in at www.qatarhappening.com to learn about last minute developments on the events scene. I bid a fond farewell to the Qatar Happening events guide. From October we grow into QH, Qatar’s Happening Magazine. Look for us in your favourite news stand, at QDC and Virgin Mega Stores.

The Hair's the Thing By Jessica Davey-Quantick Fall’s finally here, and with it that deep-engrained back-to-school need that has many people searching out bouquets of freshly sharpened pencils, new outfits, and most importantly, new hair. The first step is the cut itself. “For fall? Asymmetric cuts are really in right now, so more of the unbalanced hair cuts,” said Hillary Kozma Owner and Master Stylist at Glow Salon and Spa. “Fall colours, lots of reds and eggplants, chocolate browns, and the contrast of chocolate browns with maybe a lighter colour.” 9

Years of back-to-school haircuts means many people schedule their new look for September. But in Doha, where good stylists are at a premium and the desert air has many heads looking more like a poodle than Victoria Beckham, that can be a little tricky.

“It is so dry here, it needs constant trimming. Every six to eight weeks people should come in and have a hair trim, and a deep conditioning treatment,” said Kozma. Qatar is like a moisture vampire for hair, which leaves people prone to split ends and breakage, even if they wouldn’t normally be. However Kozma says it’s not just the air that’s to blame. “There are different challenges, just because the climate and the water here is very hard on hair. Whatever chemicals they use for the desalinization process is very hard on the hair. It strips out the moisture, strips out the colour. And I think people are in the water a lot more so the chlorine tends to fade out the hair, so there are problems with that,” she said. “And definitely just the overall dryness with the climate here too.” She says one of the keys is finding a good stylist – particularly if you’re going to be colouring your hair as well. 10

“You should always consult with your stylist; it’s an individual, case by case thing. The colouring in your hair, the texture of your hair, the condition of your hair, things like this,” she said. “Arabic hair is very course and thick and black, it’s coloured differently, it’s cut differently. Western hair is very fine, thin, even if you have thick hair each individual hair is usually very fine in texture. Colouring is definitely very different. You have to have a more delicate approach with western hair.” Good stylists will be able to cut the hair to work with your natural texture and recommend appropriate products– all important according to Kozma. She says it’s crucial not to over-stress hair that’s already being challenged by the environment. “Work with your natural texture, don’t fight it. Do something to prevent the frizz. I’d say sealing it with serum, doing lots of deep conditioning, conditioning every time you shampoo, and try not to shampoo every day. The natural oils are best for the hair, if you can go a couple of days,” she said. “I know it sounds gross but get it kind of greasy and then comb it through, that’s the best thing you can do for your hair. Dirty hair is actually a good thing. Most hair doesn’t need to be cleansed that often.” If you must wash it, she says be careful of the products you choose. “You should be really diligent. Use a colour safe shampoo, treat your hair before you get in the chlorine or salt water. And use a low sulfate shampoo. It’ll say on the bottle– sulfates are the detergent that’s in the product, and when it’s too concentrated, when the shampoo is low quality, it’ll strip out colour and moisture. So look for one that has a low sulfate level.” It may take a bit more effort in Qatar, but it’s still possible to attain that picture-perfect fall hair. 12

The Art of Dessert By Jessica Davey-Quantick

Good art endures. But some of the best art is the kind that ends up in your stomach. Jessie Panganiban started baking when she was six, and trained to be a pastry chef at De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the Philippines. But she says you don’t need to be a professionally trained chef to create scrumptious works of edible art. “If you're really creative and have enough patience this is something everyone can master,” she said. “Let your creativity flow. This is your canvas!” Looking at some of the cakes, pies and desserts that professionals produce can be daunting to even experienced home cooks. However Panganiban says that simplicity is often the key to getting great desserts to the table. 14

Check us out online for our favourite easy recipes our staff will be making this holiday season!

Spotlight on arts

“Desserts aren't really complicated. Refrigerated desserts work well if you don't have enough time to prepare it. It basically consists of a base (crust), fruit and cream. Chill it for a few hours, et voila.” she said. According to Panganiban, the key is to do things the old fashioned way. “Start baking from scratch and use none of those instant cake or dessert mixes. From there you'll learn the basics of baking,” she said. It doesn’t have to be complicated or include expensive ingredients, if you manage to create a Mona Lisa in sugar. “The way it looks just makes you want to devour it. Plus, you don't care how many calories it will give you, you're just so tempted by it,” she said. “It’s when you're done having your main course then everyone at the table just looks at each other asking if anyone is up for dessert. Why do they have to ask? It’s food too! There’s just something a little evil about those indulgent treats. After you've had your super meal, you just feel you have to give yourself a prize, that strawberry cheesecake, that chocolate crème brulee, that warm slice of apple pie with a scoop of ice cream, that tiny fruit tart...it's just oh so good!” But once again, you don’t have to be Michelangelo to pull this off- simple presentation can look as sleek and elegant as hours spent smoothing fondant. A bit of Houdini trickery can help though, and make you look like a pro, even if you’re one of those people who can burn water. “I made a five-minute dessert for this small dinner I had to go to. They were expecting me to bring something fancy. I just got these small round flat breads, whipped some cream, sliced fresh berries to go on top of the cream and garnished it with shaved chocolate. They thought I slaved in the kitchen for it!” 16

Sea, Sand, and Camels By Jessica Davey-Quantick Whether you like your camels real or fake, you can get them both at ‘Dreams’, the latest offering from Sealine Beach Resort. “There will be a theme park for children, including camel rides, horse rides, and a giant trampoline kids and adults can enjoy, as well as a train ride for kids,” said Abdul Shukoor of Sealine Beach Resort. “We have real horses, real camels you can ride on the beach and jet skis (as well as) a merry-goround in the shape of a camel.” Dreams, which opened in August, offers summer fun outside the city. “We have everything, so even the bachelors won’t feel bored!” said Shukoor. With video games and activities for kids both big and small, Shukoor says the resort even includes things to keep adults entertained. 20

Spotlight on entertainment

“In the past this resort has been exclusively for families, but now we have a different kind of clientele,” he said.

While most adults are content to sun themselves on the beach with a trashy magazine, many kids easily tire of building sand castles and racing through the sea. Shukoor says the resort aims to give them more options beyond collecting seashells. “In the past kids could get a bit lost or bored at the beach,” he said, “This gives them something else to do.” It also fills a theme-park niche Doha has been missing, and all within driving distance of the city. And unlike many activities in Qatar, this one won’t cost you an appendage to partake. Entrance is QR 99 with theme park tickets around QR 10 – so how much you pay depends on how many times you want to go around. “We want to make it affordable,” said Shukoor. That makes the resort attractive for singles, families, and everyone in between. It even includes a selection of Oriental grills and Asian delicacies, so there’s no need to lug a cooler along. "We want to create a family friendly environment with something for everyone,” said Shukoor. “What we are doing is building dreams.” The park is open Friday and Saturday from 12:30 p.m. till 3:00 p.m. For more information, call 476-5299. 21

Gymnastics World Cup By Jessica Davey-Quantick The gymnasts are coming. For the second year in a row, Qatar hosts the Doha Artistic Gymnastics World Cup from Sept. 28th till Sept. 30th. “We have three kinds of gymnastics. We have rhythmic gymnastics for girls, with ribbons, clubs, and hoops. We have artistic gymnastics for boys and girls, for girls with beams, floor vault, for men, rings, pummel horse, things like that. And after that we have trampoline,” said Serge Van Poelvoorde, Technical Coordinator for the Qatar Gymnastics Federation. “(Last year) this event, it was one of the best events in the world. We have six events like this in the world, and the one in Asia, was in Doha. First time in March 2008, and now it’s coming again in September.”

24

Spotlight of sports

He says Qatar is slotted to host it again because of the quality of the facilities available here. “We have very good venues, very good places to practice, safety, accommodation, everything,” he said. And just like last year, the event will be free. Van Pelvoorde says this is a great opportunity for gymnasts in Qatar, and he hopes to encourage others to get involved.

“We have around 15 professional coaches and every day they go into the schools to try to give the opportunity to practice sports,” he said. “It’s not for high level, it’s just to enjoy. We have around 500 (students). And after some time, they start to be (more professional).” Since starting the program eight years ago, he’s seen many of his students go on to compete. “We started gymnastics eight years ago, separate of course. It was not allowed for me to attend training sessions for girls,” he said. "But now, you can see boys and girls train together. We have male coaches for the girls, we have all the training camps and sessions together, and so it’s a big step for the culture in Qatar for sport. We try to promote the practice of sport, and the target of our federation is of course to organize such events but also trying to attract local kids to practice sports activities.” Having both genders compete is also a big step forward in raising Qatar’s international sports profile. 25

Spotlight of sports

“For international gymnasts, we didn’t have a lot of girls. Because from Europe, Qatar is still like Saudi, a closed country, it’s not good for the girls. (Last year from Qatar) there were 150 gymnasts, 100 boys but only 50 girls. But afterwards everyone was surprised, because they discovered Qatar.”

This time around, he expects the numbers to be more evenly split, male and female. Last year's competition really helped draw Qatari girls into the sport. They’re also hoping to encourage more people to come out and watch. “This is another problem, because the first sport in Qatar is shopping. So when you have free time you go in the mall. The last event it was around 1500-2000 spectators. It’s not bad. But spectators were expats, not local people. If you see tennis matches full capacity, but 90 per cent expats. (This time) I tried to organize some things because our target is to try to explain to the kids, come see gymnastics and after maybe you can try, you can start, you can practice sport.” The show will certainly be worth it. “Last time it was around 40 countries. Now, it will be around 170 gymnasts from 35 countries. The best countries of the world will be there, China, Japan Korea, Russia, France, Canada, all countries,” he said. “We want to explain to the people that we have high level events, and it’s free.” For more information, check out the Qatar Gymnastics Federation at www.qatargym.com 26

Close encounters

Steve Lawler By Jessica Davey-Quantick Pure Productions gives you an excuse to make it back to Doha this September. Steve Lawler hits Doha with a heart-pounding show to dust off the Ramadan cobwebs in style on Sept. 25th. “I’ve had some great parties in Dubai. Obviously it’s a very different scene (here) then anywhere else in the world, the rules and regulations are much tougher, but people want to party,” he said. “What fuels me is the energy in the music and the atmosphere I can create.” He’s been creating atmosphere since he was a teenager. Starting with illegal parties and underground clubs in the UK, he’s been mixing beats and creating music since he was barely out of primary school. 30

Close encounters

“I stared collecting records at 16. First gig, one of my illegal parties, at 17. I started doing these things at an early age. I wanted to be a bit rebellious, but more importantly I wanted to play in front of an audience, but I was too young to even get into a club myself, so I couldn’t play in clubs,” he said. “I just used to knock about with a bunch of kids who were into the same thing. We were a bit of a minority back then, but when you’re into the same music, the same things, you just find each other.”

For almost two decades he’s been finding other people who feel the same way about the music as he does. “What changed was 19 years – technology moved on, I got older,” he said. “I started doing this as a hobby but then I realized there wasn’t anything else I wanted to do.” Staying in the industry, and more importantly staying relevant and at the top of the DJ heap for longer than many of his listeners have been alive is no small accomplishment. But for Lawler, what keeps him going is simple. 31

35

Close encounters

“One thing and one thing only – the absolute love of music,” he said. “The industry can be hard sometimes, and traveling the way we do can be uncomfortable, but performing in front of an audience is addicting. Playing music is as much in my heart now as it was when I first started buying records.” What he does is take elements of the everyday and mix it to create something unique.

“I would describe it simply as house and techno it’s deep but with a lot of energy,” he said. He’s a grittier DJ, inspired by ‘vices’. And he says, playing in the deserts not going to affect that. “The kind of music I like is more mysterious, more sexy, more deep, and that’s what you get when I play – it won't change from country to country.” And that’s something he thinks Doha’s craving for. “Hopefully what I’ll do is whip them into a crazy frenzy without them even noticing. I’m going to play stuff you’ve never heard before and get you into a real party vibe,” he said. “I’m expecting a good reaction. I know I can work any crowd. Put me behind a DJ booth and it’s just what I do. That might sound egotistical but it’s one of the few things in my life I’m confident about.” He hits the stage September 24th, Diplomatic Club Tent at 9:00 p.m. For more information, call 614-5946, or check out www.qatarhappening.com for updated details.

Gourmet guide

Traditional Goodness By Jessica Davey-Quantick It’s a troubling challenge to write a food article for a month that includes Ramadan. This is my first time experiencing Ramadan, and much to my surprise, I’ve discovered there are traditional foods eaten this time of year, even if the whole point is to fast. I’ve loved dates for a while, having grown up in a household where honey was deemed an appropriate replacement for candy. However I wasn’t aware that they’re also an integral part of the Ramadan experience, and if done properly, can create a link from the modern world to the very beginnings of Islam. 38

Gourmet guide

“Dates are considered as blessed fruit coming out of a blessed tree as mentioned in the Holy Qur'an. It is the sole tree that can live in our harsh climate and produce a fruit that contains most of the minimum food values required for a being to live,” said Abdal Aziz Alzeyara, Chairman of Dhahya, who provide traditional chocolates, sweets and dates. He says that not only are dates delicious, but they’re also a vital part of making it through Ramadan fasting.

“It is medically proven that eating simple sweets (such as dates) at breakfast allows the stomach to start preparing for the next meal. If dates are eaten with Laban (salted milk) then it is considered a complete meal. Dates have 45 food elements and 10 ammonite acids. They contain 74% Sugar, 15% water, 2% gelatin materials, 2.5% fats, Vitamins A, B, B2 and D. They also contain proteins and mineral salts,” he said. What sets the offerings at his store apart is their focus on tradition. Named after a traditionally magnificent breed of Arabic horse, they present traditional sweets in a traditional way and do it well – something that is lost as more and more people try to modernize their product. “We have started with the vision of combining the heritage and hospitality in a Qatari identity translated in our name and logo, where the horse symbolizes heritage and dates symbolize hospitality. Combined together we visualize the Qatari flag adding the Qatari identity.” Dhahya offers a selection of soft, hard, and dry dates in a variety of traditional packaging. Back to School Blues By Jessica Davey-Quantick First day back at school can be tough, especially if you’re under four feet tall. Most parents have dealt with the tears, tantrums, and pleas for them not to leave – as well as the reaction of their children when they drop them off. “We tell parents if they’re anxious, the child’s going to be more anxious,” said Kimberley Sheedy, owner of Starfish Lane Kids. With two facilities, one operating for four years and the newest one just reaching it’s first birthday, she’s seen it all, from both parents and kids. They have over 250 kids between the ages of one and four from all over the world, and around 70 staff. She says they make sure all the parents know the staff and equipment are as safe and skilled as possible, as well as details about all the programs the kids will be participating in. But that still doesn’t make it easier for many parents – let alone their children – to let go of each other’s hands every morning. 54

“I’m a child psychologist as well and I do talks on separation anxiety,” said Sheedy. She says parents can feel it as acutely as children, particularly that first time the kids head off to school. For many parents, they’ve spent all day, every day, for years with their tiny tots, and handing them over to the care of others can be a daunting prospect. But experts say while it’s a natural response, parents need to work hard to get comfortable with the idea, so their kids can too. The best way to do that is to research the school, camp, or daycare their child is going to, which includes more than just signing up and writing a check. Experts say parents should tour locations, meet staff, and ask questions. Good locations will also do something to address the child’s anxiety, even if it’s small. Many preschools and daycares will include a morning group activity to help kids get over the initial tears and fears. “We’ve got a book called ‘The Kissing Hand’ we use the first week,” said Sheedy. “It’s all about leaving your mum.” Some, like Starfish Lane, even go as far as to incorporate things like aromatherapy into the day to keep little ones calm and relaxed. Unfortunately, there usually isn’t a group circle-time for the parents. Some parenting groups suggest parents with kids at the same school schedule some get-to-know-you coffee dates or events to help distract them from their worries, as well as give parents a chance to socialize. “The first two weeks is the worst,” said Sheedy. “We call the parents everyday just to tell them everything is fine. They may get a bit more anxious seeing Starfish Lane jump up on their phone at first, but to phone every parent within 45 minutes of starting makes them feel that yes, my child is special and they’re going to be alright.” For more information on Starfish Lane, contact their Al Markhiya Branch at 487-5939 or their Al Jelaiah Branch at 411-0355. 56
