ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE A poignantly revealing depiction of the sibling relationship between Kayah, a young man with Down Syndrome and his sister Maitreyah. Expressed through dance, theatre and storytelling Glass Child puts a microscope on their love and how their lives have been affected by other people’s perceptions. It questions how the rest of us behave when we find the difference we inevitably look for and asks us to examine why we search for difference when we share so much in common.

Inspired by a number of true events, Viral is a story about Art and Zane, two boys who seek to attain online celebrity in order to become more popular at school (and make some money). But what lengths will they go to, and what lines are they willing to cross? Created here on the Gold Coast, produced internationally and now embarking on a statewide tour, Viral is a powerful investigation of social responsibility in a world of changing technology.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM If you are a fledgling playwright with a story you are burning to tell, this is your opportunity.

AGES 14–17

Award winning Playwright Matthew Ryan, known for his plays including Boy, Girl, Wall and Kelly, is coming home to the Gold Coast to share his secrets and skill with a select group of young people with a story to tell. On completion of the program a selected number or participants will present their short play in a rehearsed reading, at HOTA.

American Psycho - The Musical is a pitch black, social satire about the evil that can be done by a man with privilege and power and just how easy it is to get away with it.

Caught between her desire for love and a longing for freedom, enigmatic and elusive Carmen faces an impossible choice. Captivating Don José, he abandons everything to pursue her. But when Carmen finds herself a new lover Don José’s jealousy leads to a gripping finale. This new production highlights the colour and vibrancy of postcard Spain, with vintage-inspired costumes it evokes an era of bikers and shady police in a postwar setting of teen angst and rebellion. HOTA GALLERY 2021 EDUCATION PROGRAM Once open in 2021 HOTA Gallery’s inquiry-based education program will be delivered by experienced educators and artists incorporating the art processes of exploring, developing, sharing and responding.

THE JOCK AND BEVERLY MCILWAIN ARTS BUS FUND

The Jock and Beverly McIlwain Arts Bus Fund is an initiative to assist in reducing the cost of travel to HOTA. Jock and Beverly’s contribution has helped more than 10,000 young people experience the arts. Schools can apply to the fund to receive a one-off subsidy to contribute towards bus travel to see a performance, art work, or participate in workshops.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHERE DO WE GO WHEN WE ARRIVE? Please introduce yourself to our front of house staff when you arrive. They are your best point of contact on the day. ASSEMBLY POINTS On performance and event days there will be a designated assembly area for large groups at the bottom of the terrace steps at the front of HOTA Central. On busy days please consider other patrons. SCHOOL BAGS Ideally school bags should be left on the bus. However, if necessary, students can place their school bags under their seats if they don’t get in the way. EATING AREAS There are multiple locations to enjoy lunch across HOTA. See map for locations.

Serves a wide variety of food and drink. If your group plans to use the HOTA Café please let us know so we can be prepared. Students may place take away orders however we must be notified in advance. To directly make a booking in HOTA Café, please call on 07 5588 4087.

You are more than welcome to bring your own food and drink when you come to HOTA. BUS DROP OFF Groups can be dropped off in the drive through area at the front of HOTA Central. Bus drivers should use their discretion for the safest drop off position. See map for best location. BUS PARKING Is available to the adjacent main carpark however there are limited spaces. Once these are full drivers will need to seek an alternate parking location and then return at the agreed time to collect the school group TICKET COLLECTION Please send ONE representative from your school to the Box Office to collect the tickets for your group ACCESSIBILITY We want everyone to have a great time when they come to HOTA. And we’re committed to making sure the arts are accessible to everyone.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECORDING OF PERFORMANCES Due to copyright restrictions, you are not allowed to take any photos or make any recordings of performances. POST-SHOW Q&A Schools must register to attend all post-show Q&As. WORKSHOPS, MASTERCLASSES AND PD OPPORTUNITIES Hands-on and immersive experiences in the arts create the richest learnings for both students and teachers. There are accessible parking spaces close to the front of HOTA Central and a designated set-down and pick up area in front of the main entrance. For wheelchair users and people with mobility requirements there is a ramp that provide access from the street level to the terrace and HOTA Café, and then heading indoors there is a lift which will take you to the main foyer, Box Office and Theatre 1.
