MON, 9:15 AM to 12:15 PM

Sep 11 - Nov 13, 9 sessions

No class on Sep 25

Tuition: $374*, Material fee: firing fee

Additional material fee: $10

*Includes 1st bag of clay (stoneware)

While form and Function are of utmost importance when working with clay, let’s not forget how much fun it is to make our pots look great! Perfect for both hand builders and wheel throwers alike, the focus of this class will be on the finishing process. We will begin by making a variety of tools to imprint our own designs on our pieces, including stamps, springs, and rollers. We will then explore a variety of surface decoration techniques – sgraffito, Mishima, slip decoration, water etching, and underglaze stencils – just to name a few. We’ll take the stress out of glazing by making our own glaze tests, providing us with an informed idea of how specific glaze combinations will look on our pieces. Weather permitting, we will also play around with spraying glazes. Students must have basic knowledge of working with clay and be self-directed. Please bring a notebook to class.

The wheel, slab roller, extruder, and our hands are just some of the tools available in the studio to help us make things. But all too often and all too quickly, we tend to gravitate towards one method and forget about the rest. Taking a look at all of our resources is a great way to begin making pots or sculpture, and it's a wonderful way for experienced clay hands to find new inspiration. Come open to experimentation and bring a sense of humor.

This beginner drawing course will teach students how to improve their ability to draw from life. They will hone their observational skills and their ability to create three dimensional planes of a fully rendered drawing using shade, light, and basic forms. Other topics to be covered include composing portraits, working from reference vs. from observation, as well as demonstrations and lectures from the instructor.

Are you interested in learning about light and shadow in art and how to transfer your drawing skills to painting? Students will learn how to approach the process of painting – the use of light in the composition and the effects of light and shadow as we work from various still life set ups. We begin the process with a drawing that specifies our shadow and light shapes. After completing our still life drawing, we’ll learn how to transfer that drawing onto a stretched canvas or panel then begin our value-based underpainting, ultimately turning them into captivating paintings. Some drawing experience is suggested. But a beginner eager to learn or an experienced artist seeking to enhance your skills, this class will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to create beautiful works. Oils only.

Oils only.
