In this one-day workshop you will learn to make willow start ornaments. Based off a traditional German technique, you will use a small jig to set in prepared willow and wrap it with waxed linen. Make as many ornaments as time permits, in many different styles. We will also discuss the process of preparing the willow for use in this project. All materials and tools will be available. EXPLORE METAL CLAY Kelly Green-Grady ◊ 24W WKS842 ◊ Beginner Sun, MAR 17 10 AM to 4 PM Tuition: $140, Material fee: $60, payable to instructor

Join us as we take a trip into the world of silver metal clay (PMC3). Metal clay is an exciting medium that begins as a suspension of tiny particles of silver in an organic clay binder. It can be shaped and layered or textured by hand or with molds and is as malleable as ordinary modeling clay. After drying and sanding, the clay is fired with a torch or kiln. When fired, the binder burns off, leaving pure sintered metal (fine silver). It can then be polished, or patinas added. This introduction will give you the foundation for achieving great results when working with silver clay, including a basic understanding of rolling, texturing, shaping, and finishing metal clay. At the end of the day, students will go home wearing their custom creations. Register HERE

SOUNDING MUD: INSTRUMENTS OF CLAY Koyoltzintli (Koyo) Miranda ◊ 24W WKS301 ◊ All Levels Sun, MAR 17 10 AM to 4 PM Tuition: $140, Material fee: $20

During this all-day workshop, we will be making sound instruments made from clay. We’ll begin with an introduction to a variety of instruments using museum archives, personal photographs, and recordings, delving deeper into the sonic legacy of the Americas. Following the introduction, students will be presented with a few different models that each participant can choose from to create their own. Informed by Mesoamerican and South American traditions, these will include globular, poly-globular, and tubular flutes, rattles, and whistles. Students will also learn how to play these various instruments and how to hold their breath to maximize the melody. In the instructor’s tradition, sound has the potential to awaken in us a sense of belonging and wellbeing, and when played, instruments allow the player to feel a relation to the land and other forms of life. Please bring any clay tools you may have, chop sticks, and a knife/blade. Register HERE
