EDITOR’S NOTE

WELCOME TO THE ARTZ MAGAZINE Thank you for opening this book, and taking a look inside the world of The Artz Magazine. When I first thought of creating this magazine, initially I wanted to use it as a way to become better at storytelling and design. With that being said, I recently graduated college with a BFA in illustration. And I was told “There’s no jobs in the arts!” I knew that going into the program there would be shitty jobs or no jobs at all. I even had a cousin of mine promise him that I would change majors so I can have a chance at having a decent life. Am I struggling artist? Not sure yet, I mean I did just graduate so I have a bit of time, thanks mom. I still believe that I can prosper as an artist as long as I put my all into it. It’s been about a month, and I still haven’t found a job that directly relates to my degree. I’ve been sending my resume’ and portfolio to various design/creative companies, and I barely get any responses, other than “You’re not what we’re looking for”. So, I decided to create my own magazine. I always want to create, and it doesn’t matter how. It can be through writing, drawing, designing, or video. Through the creation of this magazine, I will present talented upcoming artists, as well as established artists. I want to dig into the brains of a creative people and explore the passionate artists of the world. So, I present to you The Artz Magazine, a magazine dedicated to the creative people that I admire. THAT REDKID Foreward by Alexus Parker

From head to toe, a slightly below average height young man with a redhead, red facial hair, stands before me. I can’t tell if he’s been sitting in the sun for too long, but his face is redder than it should be. That Red Kid . I’ve known Sean Rall for about 4 years of my life. I met Sean at FIT where we both majored in the illustration program (2013-2017). Wiithin those 4 years I have heard countless tales of “the Neverbores” and the world he created for them. Before I met him, I don’t think I’ve personally seen someone so red in my life. I didn’t like this guy initially (sorry bud), his jokes were a bit crude, and often played on the quirks of others, and he was boisterous. Eventually, his crude humor no longer made me experience secondhand embarrassment. With that being said, Sean is an incredibly driven, and talented person. Honestly, this may be the only issue I create of this magazine, but when I first thought of this doing this, I knew exactly who I wanted to interview first. That Red Kid otherwise known as Sean Rall.

RED Q&A

Interview by Alexus Parker

So tell me about yourself. I was born and raised on Long Island. The town I grew up in was very small, and quiet past 9 pm but during the day it seemed to be filled with tremendous amounts of drama. I had a fantastic childhood provided to me by my parents, while my dad worked, my mom would foster the foundation of my art. I would always be drawing or crafting when I could be. I also watched plenty of tv shows, movies and flash cartoons. I played a disproportionate amount of video games and all of that has stuck with me pretty well. I spent a lot of time alone creating while watching or listening to something. I have a crazy good memory of nearly all of it and try to infuse that subtly in all of my art. I want it to feel familiar without being able to put your finger on why.

How did you get the name thatredkid?

Simple, I am red. Ever since 7th grade it has been a general term in reference to me due to my 6

immediate color change when I get embarrassed or extremely heated. I turn a bright red and after being referred to as it so many times, “that red kid I decided I liked it enough to use it as my creative handle. The more I associate myself with the color red the more it will make my name and image synonymous with the color. People see red, and my image and art pops into their heads and gets people thinking.

When did you start drawing? As soon as I could grip a pencil.

Did you go to school for art?

Yes I did, in high school I took extra sculpting classes and in college I majored in illustration at FiT. I lived

in the city for my college years and just moved back to my hometown in February because of shitty roommates.

Has it crossed your mind that you may not succeed? Why?

All the time, plenty of brilliant people fail but I plan to succeed. I refuse to ever stop pursuing art and my creative vision until I have met my dreams and surpassed them.

And how long did it take to get to this point? 22 years of doubt and constant questioning of what I was doing. I only recently began feeling truly

confident in my style and artistic growth. My art has exploded and focused itself exponentially over the past two years and really only within the last few months can I say that I know what I want to do with my life and imaginary monsters.

What artist inspires you?

Oh man so many artists inspire me from people at the absolute fringe of the art scene all the way up to the biggest celebrity artists. It’s incredibly dull to only find inspiration in one vein of art when exploring and figuring out how to apply these new elements into your art keeps it alive and evolving. It’s impossible to be truly innovative past a certain 7

varies from material to material but the conversation with each character is the constant across the board. I truly believe in all of my monsters and bringing them to life is the joy I find in creating. The process is almost like a weird pregnancy where I grow attached to them, but it’s essential to my process.

Last thoughts?

Thanks for asking me to do this Alexus, it was a real honor. I’m really excited to share the neverbores with the world and inspire generations of artists to create. I encourage everyone to see the beauty or inspiration in everything around them and tell their stories. Fill the world with as much creativity as possible because that Never bores? drives the world. Keep thinking and keep growing. *Neverbores. They’re four eyed friends for everyone. They Also if anyone wants to work with me always feel free to are my medium for telling stories and communicating get in touch with me. I want to explore as many genres with the world. I first drew them in 7th grade under a and forms of art with the neverbores as possible and different name, and then again in my freshman year of make as many friends along the way The End. 9

point if you shut yourself out of other ways of seeing college. Their story really only developed within my last the world. We should all be looking for inspiration two years in college. That was where I coined the term everywhere. “Neverbore” for the first time and really pursued what their purpose was. Neverbores are a highly adaptive and intelligent species that accompany a human partner What are the materials you always carry? In the top of my backpack there’s always my “skeleton through their lives. The more time they spend together kit,” which are my bare essentials for getting down ideas and share with each other the stronger they become as anywhere. There is always a pencil, a tiny sketchbook, an a team. They personify their partner and act as a perfect ink pen, an x-acto blade, and a flashdrive. These things compliment when their bond is strong. are always with me incase I think of something I HAVE On a more personal level the Neverbores are my most to remember. As far as bare essentials for sculpting at prized posession. They’re my most invaluable tool the end of the day I’m most commonly using super because they are my own “thing.” They’re the perfect medium for me to explore, entirely new. I never wanted sculpey and a set of wax carving tools. to use something that already existed to tell my stories. So I created something inspired by everything I loved, What is your process when working? I like starting from a really simple often terrible sketch something I wanted to picture in every scenario and refining the shit out of it. I often build the character imaginable, and the Neverbores were born. They’re as I’m sketching and layering it, changing with every never boring. They’re going to be everywhere. edition. I’ll often let the character tell me what to change about them until they feel right. I know in my heart What is your plans for the future? when I have captured them correctly and it’s this strong Oh man, everything. I want to create an entire new gut feeling that really dictates the final piece. As I build world from scratch. Whatever means necessary to get every character from sketch to sculpture they evolve into there is what I’m working on at all times. Everyone something that feels genuine and unique. The process wants to work for Disney, or Star Wars or Marvel but I have ideas bigger than that. I want my own studio filled to the rafters with my own ideas. I know that I’m going “So I created something to make it happen. However, in the meantime I plan to inspired by everything I loved, something I wanted to picture in really fill my portfolio with concept art for the content I plan to create. That includes tv shows, video games and every scenario imaginable, and music as well. I’ll also be focusing on releasing a small the Neverbores were born.” collection of clothes.
