THE LIGHT JIGGING SPECIALIST Abu Garcia Light Jigging rod encompass shore jigging to on-board light jigging and offshore rock casting. The rod is constructed using a thinner diameter graphite blank for superior lightweight and sensitivity. The soft parabolic tip is the key to work bait-finesse lures or jig (micro) effieciently. It presents the jig in a natural subtle drop
Optimized for Spinning Reels
Tommy Skarlis, 2009 FLQ Walleye Tour Champ: “Fireline is my ”Go to” line for casting baits...The smoother new formula really allows me to wing the baits out. Fireline’s strength makes it an awesome line for ripping baits through weeds, and more importantly, pulling fish out of heavy cover and getting them into the boat!”
INCREDIBLY STRONG Three times stronger than mono
TOUGH AND ABRASION RESISTANT Slices through vegetation
Keith Kavajecz, The Next Bite TV “Fireline is my ”Go to” line for trolling crankbaits on structure. It is durable-for those rocky, snaggy, zebra mussel situations. It has no stretch, so I can monitor the lure for debris and bites, and it is thin to let cranks dive deeper. Give me a Fireline and I’ll show you fish!”
INCREDIBLE SENSITIVITY Telegraphic feel for structure and strikes

My fellow anglers and friends, Selamat Hari Raya to all celebrating. We’re now in the month of August. Sailfish season starts like now slowly building up towards the east coast monsoon. Oh! Life as an angler, we’ve been blessed. For this issuse we tested out some really good rods with my favourite being the Megabass Destroyer. We also went on to test Shimano’s value for money Chrocarch CI4+. We tested also lines, baits, and so many other stuffs but one stood out. That would be the not so humble treble hook, Trinity Hooks by ODZ. They are amazing. So amazing that the lab test is going longer that normal. Another exciting piece of news I want to share is this... The Junior Angler Project is taking of well. We have our first sponsor for the project and thus in this issue we begin a “Short Story“ contest for junior anglers. With this we hope that more angling parents will bring their kids fishing and try to win something. There is just one more thing I want to add. The world is going mad. With wars going on, people hating one and other, religious fights, chaos in humanity, and destruction of moral beings; Our world certainly need some healing. To help get things in order let us begin by not sharing bad news, messages of hate, and anything along those lines on social media. Next wipe your social media walls clean of all these bad news. Finally share only messages of peace, love, good news, and hope. By doing so we will be able to shutdown the fuel that feeds the evil fire... Seems like the hippies got it right, Thank you anf happy fishing. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

No Retreat, No Surrender: The By Philemon Foo
e Megabass Destroyer F3-69X7
The mere mention of the brand Megabass will get many an angler wet at the jaws while they turn green with envy. Megabass, the brain child of Mr Yuki Ito, is something to be reckoned with. They make eye candies look plain and they do perform well.
27
Play Time
Recently I had the opportunity to do battle with the Megabass Destroyer rod. The moment I took hold of the rod, I felt my nerve and veins connecting to it, somewhat like in the Transformer cartoons of old where robots merge with robots to become bigger robots. The Destroyer became one with me.
29
In Full Control
In my hands, the Megabass Destroyer’s weight vanished and I felt like I had full control of the rod from the cork handle that sat in my palms to the tip of which hung a lure. The lightness and balance of the Destroyer is phenomenal. I can feel the lure as if it were in my hands.
31
Cast Like A Sharp Shooter
Adorn with small diameter (Semi Micro type guides) Fuji KR Concept Guides helps the Destroyer with casting accuracy allowing you to land your lures to places you intend your lures to land on (without the obstruction of wind and other factors). If you’ve not cast a Micro Guide or Semi Micro Guide rod you should give them a try.
33
AMAZING CASTING DISTANCE
Built with a tip that whips (about 20% of the tip), the Destroyer send lures flying very good distances without much effort. In fact a feather light flick of a tip will get lures flying distances that lesser rods could achieve with a lot more force. Fuji’s KR Concept Guides are well known for casting smoothness and durability.
35
Better
Sensitivity
With Cork Cork handles are known to give better sensitivity as compared to EVA as well as other handle materials thus Yuki Ito decided on cork handles at the reel seat area where the angler holds when he or she fishes. It also looks nice adding to the aesthetics of the Destroyer. The EVA handle at the rear gives the Destroyer added protection as that is the section of any rod that sits on the ground most. EVA certainly withstands abuse better than cork and is lighter than rubber of which is tougher. The whole package makes lots of sense for a freshwater type rod.
37
Blank
Technology
The Megabass Destroyer comes with the 7-axis Coreinplex X7 graphite blank of which features multi layer, multi axis, Yoloy Taping System. All these adds up to the making of a super thin, super light, and fast vibration transmitting blank (super sensitive) with lots of power. Technology has defied science.
39
Power To Manage Brutes
We tested the Destroyer with snakeheads (Channa striatus) and the muscle within the destroyer’s blank is phenomenal. With a backbone that stretches to about 80% of the blank, it fights like speedy Wing Chun (Kung Fu) master but with the impact of a heavyweight boxer. What I am trying to say here is that it is superlight and fast yet has the power to help fight the fish.
41
Toying With
Snakeheads
Every time the fish makes a dash, the blank fights back recoiling or springing back to its original position. This action not only helps control the fish by turning it away from snags. It also tires the fish faster leaving you with plenty of energy to fight your nest fish.
43
Playing With Dragons
Snakeheads (Channa striatus) may not have given the Destroyer the challenge it seeks. Too easy as some would say. To makes things a little more challenging for the Destroyer, we had it fight some sizable dragon groupers and the Destroyer fought them with relative ease.
45
Power To Win
Mind you, the Destroyer we tested is a finesse rod rated at 6-14lb.However it easily managed groupers ranging from 11lb (5kg) to 20lb (10kg). Needless to say, the fight put on by the dragon groupers are a lot harder than the snakeheads but the Destroyer managed them with relative ease.
47
Red Drum Landed
After playing with the dragon groupers we decided to pit the Destroyer against the hard fighting red drums (Sciaenops ocellatus). Still the Destroyer soldiered on and we landed a few of them ranging from 5.5lb (2.2kg) to 9.5lb (4.3kg). Pitting the Destroyer against the red drums were a lot more fun and challenging. Still the Destroyer ended up the victor.
49
Extension
Of Nerves
Talking about sensitivity, The Destroyer is super sensitive. Every bump is clearly felt. It feels like the Destroyer wants you to know everything. You could probably feel the fish licking your lure. It feels like an extension of one’s nervous system.
51
Under
Pressure
We normally bring rods back to our lab for a lab test. Since this is a very expensive rod belonging to a friend, we decided to bring the lab to him and allow him to participate in the test.
The Destroyer claims to be able to manage up to 14lb of pressure with 6lb at the tip. We tested this claim with a pressure test and this lightweight rod managed 14lb of pressure before the line snapped. It could still go on but since it passed the 14lb mark, we decided to let it be.
53
Verdict
If you’re blessed with deep pockets, willingness to spend, and you enjoy most types of fishing, this rod is certainly a rod worth considering. It is very light, well balance, crazy sensitive, and has a solid and strong backbone. Since you’re willing to spend, I would love to have one too.

Abu Garcia Ares Classical Elegance In A Moder By Philemon Foo
rn Rod
Classical designs combined with modern sportiness, the Abu Garcia Ares looks elegant. If there were to be a black tie event for anglers and a fishing rod is a compulsory partner, the Ares will most certainly be walking proud.
57
Black On Black The Ares is dressed in various shades of black from matte metallic black blank to its piano black reel seat with carbon fibre lock hood. Breaking the flow of black are its cork handles that adds to its classic look. Silver lines adorned certain sections of the blank such as the guide windings and areas of the winding checks. All these give the Ares an air of elegance.
59
24 Ton
Graphite The Ares comes with a forgiving 24 ton graphite blank that is not too fragile and yet strong enough to handle the brutes that we have swimming about in our waters. It has a backbone that stretches out to about 70% of the rod giving it good amounts of power.
61
Feeling The Bumps The Ares is a sensitive rod thanks to its blank and little guides. It sends vibrations to your hands via its blank as you reel in your lure and these vibrations reaches you via the cork handle and the hole beneath the Fuji ACS reel seat.
63
Cork Handles Cork handles are great in terms of sensitivity. They transmit vibrations better than EVA and they do look good especially with the Ares’ classic design cues. Cork is also lighter than EVA and most other types of handles.
65
Rubber Butt Ending At the butt of the Ares sits a piece of rubber with the Royal Crest of the Swedish Court sitting within it. Using rubber here is great. As anglers we tend to rest our rods by standing it on its butt end and leaning it against something like a tree or a wall. A rubber butt ending gives both grip and durability of which means your rod will not slip and fall as with rods fitted with metal butt endings. Rubber is a lot more durable as compared to cork, EVA, etc. Be it EVA, hypalon, cork, or rubber, wear and tear happens. Rubber makes the most sense. 67
Well Balanced When it comes to being balanced, the Ares is well balanced with a reel on it. Without the reel, it tips to the front a little. Since we will most certainly be using a fishing reel and in this case a baitcasting reel, the rod balances out very well.
69
SMG System Micro Guides and Semi Micro Guides are the “in things now. They not only look good, they also help with weight reduction, casting accuracy, and sensitivity. The only issue would be knots knocking on the guides and thus Abu Garcia settled with Semi Micro Guides instead of Micro Guides. Since the Ares is not a finesse rod, Semi Micro Guides are good.
71
Casting Ability The Ares is a superb rod for power casters or anglers that like to cast hard. Its moderate tip allows for power casting with the ability to shoot lures good distances. The Semi Micro Guides helps give better distances too. While casting was great, unfortunately no fishes took our lures but with such a backbone I can safely say that the Ares has good fish fighting qualities.
73
Pressure
Test
The Ares in my hands is rated at 8lb-16lb. Running it through our lb test meter keeping the butt at a constant 45 degrees to the anchor, we managed get closed to 18lb of pressure before the busting the line. This means that the Ares passed the pressure test and it did well.
75
Verdict
The Abu Garcia Ares is a nice elegant looking rod with a tough blank. It also comes with Semi Micro Guides of which adds to casting accuracy, better sensitivity, and to a certain extent, better distance. It is a good rod worth considering.

Shimano Chrocarch CI By Philemon Foo
I4+
Neat Package Shimano has been making really
good fishing reels for many years now bouncing about lots of new technology making some of their reels, especially mid price range to brain exploding priced reels, smoother, lighter, and more efficient. The Shimano Chronarch CI4+ is mid range (thank God).
79
Badge Of Honor Not many reels in the market can boast of having won a major honour. The Chronarch CI4+ can as it is last year’s winner in the Best Of Show Freshwater Reel Class category and that does say something. I know, that’s like a year ago but still a winner.
81
Plain Design When it comes to design language, the Chronarch CI4+ looks plain with no “killer” colours used, or chromed out section, it doesn’t have carbon fibre layers stealing glances, no sporty looking cuts and holes, and to me it looks rather plain except for the area where the external cast control of the SVS Braking System is made. However, its front end does have an aggressive look.
83
Cool Star And Swept Handle
The Chronarch CI4+ comes with a cool looking star drag with a front running stance and to me it looks great. It also comes with a swept handle to give better balance. The handle bar comes with two triangular holes of which helps with weight saving and design.
85
Light And Smooth The Chronarch CI4+ is like a lightweight electric car. It is a very smooth reel to cast with and the retrieving is silk like with a connected feeling (not vacuum like) which is great. Weight wise, it certainly sits on the light weight reel segment thank to its carbon composite (CI4+) frame and side plates.
87
SVS For Easy Casting The Chronarch CI4+ is smooth and easy reel to cast with. Casting feels like drops of water on Teflon. Then comes the feeling as if it is being controlled by some form of inhibiting force (somewhat like the DC reels); a feeling dislike by some and welcomed by some. This could be the SVS Infinity Brake System at work.
89
The SVS Infinity Brake System of which is a centrifugal type brake uses friction to control the spool. Abu Garcia fans will be able to put one and one together and link its likeness to that of the Revo MGX reels with easy to adjust external spool control and internal adjustments at the spool (lock and unlock for the Chrocarch CI4+).
91
Precise Adjustments
The SVS Infinity Brake System allows for precision adjustments of which makes casting in windy condition controllable. Of course distance is hampered should you decide to cast right into a headwind.
93
What A Drag
The Chronarch CI4+ claims to have a maximum drag of 11lb, unfortunately this reel belongs to a friend and we do not have permission to test it in our lab thus we cannot confirm how far it would go. But during our trip it did well in managing dragon groupers and a few of the hard fighting red drums. That does say something about its capabilities.
95
Verdict The Shimano Chronarch CI4+ is a value for money mid priced reel. It is smooth, light, and very capable of which allows you to cast comfortably with good distances, and land most brutes that decide to take your lure. If you’re in the market for such a reel, keep this in mind. One more thing, it is made in Japan.

Caught On Flex: Be By Philemon Foo
erkley Flex
When it comes to soft plastic baits, I
get really excited. I love fishing them. They are not superior to other lures, baits, or things that we usually use. I just love how I can cast them into cover and pull out fishes. Now, I have been poisoned by Berkley with their Flex.
101
Looks Like Gummy
The Flex is not something made to look exactly like a real fish. In fact if I threw some of them on the floor of a supermarket they would probably end up inside the mouth of kids. They look like candy. Do fish like candy? Beats me but they sure do look a lot like gummy candy.
We had with us the Flex Grub and the Flex Shad of which comes in various colours. These soft plastic lures come with a roundish body that is ripped to create vibrations in the water. As for the tails we had with us the curly tail or ribbon tail type and the paddle tail type.
103
Salty On The Inside
The Flex is salty on the inside. I found this out while biting one in half to fit a small jig head while doing some fishing. It tasted like seasoning, perhaps for fish. Research done years ago found that fishes love salt. They are attracted to salt. So why salt on the inside instead of the outside?
105
Perhaps this is to ensure that the fish holds on to the bait longer. This is the same reason why Berkley Power Bait has scent inside the bait instead of outside. When the fish takes a bite, scent instantly fills its mouth thus putting thoughts into the fish’s mind about a lovely snack. It decides to hold on and you get to strike and play the fish.
107
Soft Yet Sturdier
It is not easy getting soft baits to be soft enough to swim sexily and yet remain sturdy (not breaking easily). Berkley has gone through a long process of Research and Development along the years and the Flex is the answer. It is soft and sexy yet sturdy enough. We tested them on snakeheads, barramundis, and groupers, and yes, they survived.
109
On The Take So how effective are they? We tested them at a commercial saltwater pond and they enticed groupers and barramundis quite easily. The trick was to drag the Flex at the bottom of the pond at slow speeds. They are effective for both barramundis and groupers.
111
Fishes Just Love Them We also tested them out at a freshwater pond and they were a hit with the snakeheads. We caught a good number of snakeheads; competing with a family of monitor lizards that were out looking for food. We landed a few and got lots of hits. The trick was to reel in at a moderate speed.
113
The Unfortunate News While the Berkley Flex is effective at catching fish, you may not be able to find them in stores at certain markets (Malaysia and Singapore included). But patience is a virtue. Knock on their Facebook wall, send them some emails, tell them to bring the Flex in, and hope they comply.
115
Verdict
The Berkley Flex is effective and has been catching fish thus far. They are sturdier and yet soft enough to give that sexy swim, two features soft bait users have always wanted. The sad thing is that they are not available in some markets as of now.

Viper Stiletto Jig By Philemon Foo
Recently we tested some fishing prod-
ucts at the waters of Pulau Pemanggil (Pemanggil Island) on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular. Amongst those tested on this trip are the Viper Stiletto Jigs.
121
Content
Fast Dropping Should you want your jigs to reach a certain level fast; the Viper Stiletto Jigs can most certainly do the job. These fast dropping metal bullets gets you to depths fast allowing you to focus jigging at your preferred depth faster. Their elongated teardrop shaped allows them to do just that.
123
Appealing And Tough
The Viper Stiletto Jigs are shiny and the ones that I like look like anchovies with the shiny blue top section and silver body. All the other colours shine too and they do look appealing. They are also tough being able to withstand a good amount of bashing.
125
Not Much Action But They Work
The Stiletto does not flutter. It does not have much action. In fact all it does is to hit the bottom fast. All these add up to what some say makes a less attractive jig. Maybe... I thought so too. But they work. On this trip I learnt something too.
127
Distance Flier
Being in the shape they are designed with, they cast really far. They are like bullets after with a streamlined wind slicing shape. Being able to get distance gave it points while others were unable to reach. Casting to feeding frenzied tongkol (tune species) registered hits and made for good photos.
129
First To The Bottom Wins Dropping fast without fan fare has benefits too. Our two deckhands were having fun challenging each other on a little contest to see who could land the most fish. The water was relatively deep and clear. It was like looking down into and aquarium. The winner of their little contest won because his jig got to the fish faster than the other deckhand’s did.
131
Verdict The Viper Stiletto Jig doesn’t have much of an action but it drops fast. It can also be cast further than jigs of similar weight but with a different profile. A superb jig when you need such qualities. There are indeed jigs for different types of jigging / fishing, and conditions.

Zenith The Monster 1 Fluorocarbon Leader By Philemon Foo
100% r Fluorocarbon lines have been around
for some time with more anglers using them. Personally I use only fluorocarbon leaders (unless I have a reason not to) on all my fishing trips. Recently I tested out Zenith’s 100% fluorocarbon leader called The Monster.
The Monster Fluorocarbon leader is a moderately stiff leader with some stretch. Its light refraction qualities is also good standing about the same level as more famous fluorocarbon leaders available in the market currently, which means that it visibility underwater is good.
135
Underwater Visibility Test We tested The Monster against a few 100% fluorocarbon leaders of the same poundage that are currently available in the market and we found that its visibility rate is very close to some of the more famous brands. We then tested The Monster against monofilament leader lines of the same poundage. It is a known fact that normal monofilament leaders are more visible underwater as compared to fluorocarbon leaders and in this test the visibility rate between the two is certainly high with the monofilament being a lot more visible.
137
Break Strength Test The Monster 100% fluorocarbon leader we have is rated 30lb. We put it through a pressure test to see how well it does. Out of 5 tests The Monster averages a break strength of 31lb of which is above its 30lb rating.
139
Field Test I used The Monster while doing some tests at a saltwater pond and it proved its worth. Low visibility is indeed a benefit as I landed quite a few barramundis on one trip and on another trip to another pond it was dragon groupers.
141
Verdict The Monster 100% Fluorocarbon Leader is a pretty good line with good invisibility rate that is close to those of more famous and proven fluorocarbon leaders in the market. It is moderately stiff and has some stretch. I am not sure how much it retails for but if these qualities are what you are looking for then do give The Monster a try.

Trinity Saltwater Tre By Philemon Foo
eble Hooks
We have thus far not “test driven any treble hooks since starting The Asian Angler magazine back in October 2012. This is our first treble hook test; the Trinity Saltwater Treble Hooks by Maruto.
145
Semi Barbless The Trinity Saltwater Treble Hooks tested are the semi barbless SCC+CP model. There are some benefits to these hooks. For starters they are legal in any state, lakes, and ponds that have laws against barbed hooks. Another benefit is that do provide some grip as there are ribs in place of the barb at the hook point.
147
Sharpness Test Sliding the hook on a plastic surface such as a plastic spoon proves just how sharp these hooks are. The Trinity Saltwater Treble Hooks latch onto the surface of the plastic spoons pretty easily. This shows just how sharp the hook points are. Don’t mess with them. Things can get messy.
149
Saltwater Test Being saltwater graded hooks we drown them in saltwater for slightly over 24 hours to see if they stood up to the corrosive nature of such an acidic environment. They did. No rusty were spotted on them despite being left in saltwater for that long.
151

Watch The Video We also wanted to see if its performance diminished after the saltwater torture test. This simply means that we want to know if it retained its sharpness after spending over 24 hours in saltwater. Sliding it through the plastic spoon proved that it remained sharp. Watch the video of the test done.
153
How Long Before They Rust? Now we want to know how long they would last in a salty environment before rust starts to set in. This time we decided to just leave them in the saltwater until we see rust. This will give us a pretty good indication of how long they will last in a salty environment. Yet as of this time of writing the hook has not rusted. We will report our finding in the next issue.
155
Verdict The Trinity Saltwater Treble Hook SCC+CP are really sharp hooks. They can withstand harsh saltwater environments. As of now we want to see just how long they would remain rust free in saltwater. Really quite amazing.

Knowledge Wise Understanding Fishing Rods Part 15 Rod Handles - Cork By Philemon Foo
In past issues we covered EVA handles
and hypalon handles. We discussed the benefits and disadvantages of both handles as well as their characteristics and for the types of rods that they are most suited to. In this issue we will take a look at cork handles, another commonly used handle.
159
Natural And Synthetic
Just in case you didn’t know, not all cork handles you see on fishing rods are natural cork. There are also rod handles made out of rubber or EVA that look cork like. We will discuss natural cork in this issue.
The rod handle at the top is made of sythetic cork or which is rubber.

Natural Cork
Cork is a natural substance that comes from certain trees (Cork Oak). It is a buoyant, light, and a fire retardant material (I don’t recommend that you burn your rod handle to see if this claim is true) used for many other things including fishing rod handles.
The top part of this handle is made of EVA to look like cork.
163
Benefits Of Cork Being a natural substance and looking the way they look, cork do add to the aesthetics of a fishing rod giving them a classical look. There are other benefits as well other than for aesthetic reasons. These benefits are:
Lightweight Cork is amongst the lighter materials used as rod handles. They weigh lesser than EVA and a lot lesser that hypalon. Being a lightweight material cork handles are often chosen as the material of choice for light weight rods. 165
Better Sensitivity
Cork transmits vibrations better than EVA. Using cork handles on fishing rods adds to the sensitivity level of a rod thus adding plus points or advantage to a rod. Sensitivity is an important factor especially those fishing drop shot style, or those using soft plastic baits, and diving lures.
This dropshot rod has an amplifier built it. It is a super sensitive rod and every component used on this rod is for one objective; super sensitivity.
167
Less Slippery
Cork ranks amongst the least slippery of rod handles in the market. With better grip also comes better confidence when fishing. Needless to say that cork handles that have been coated with epoxy loses out on this benefit.
169
Retains Heat
Should you be fishing in cold weather, a rod handle made of cork would be your choice. Cork retains heat better than EVA and hypalon. This adds to the comfort of your fishing. Being in warmer climates you do not have to worry about them over heating (just in case that came to mind).

171
Disadvantages Of Cork Handles
There are disadvantages as well as it can also help a rod fail aesthetically with the wrong colour coordination or colour scheme. Some rod cosmetics will just not go well with cork handles. There are disadvantages such as:
173
Drying Up And Cracking
Cork being a natural substance will dry up and crack, more so if lower quality cork is used. Just like how the cork used to secure wine in bottles do dry and crack over time. There are ways to maintain your fishing rod’s cork handle in good condition. We will discuss this in a few pages.
175
Insect Cookie
Certain insects get excited when they see cork and call for a party. Termites and cockroaches especially love eating them. Cork is softer than wood and with bait slime, fish slime, and a host of added flavours, cork handles are indeed an appealing cookie.
177
Fragile
Cork handles are more fragile as compared to EVA and hypalon handles. This is one of the reasons why cork handles are seldom used on boat rods that will be placed in rod holders. The pressure of a running fish can easily damaged the cork handles.
179
Discoloration
Cork handles tend to become discoloured turning darker the more it is used. Some can argue that such cork handles are seasoned but in reality they turn dark because of dirt as well as moisture. When this happens the aesthetics of the rod takes a dip.
181
Caring For Your Cork Handles
There are anglers who have the cork handles of their rods varnished. Some even go to the extent of coating them with epoxy. This is done to protect the cork from damage but by doing so, some of the benefits of using cork as a rod handle vanishes.
183
Wash Them After Each Trip
Caring for one’s fishing tackle includes washing them after every trip. The same should be done for cork handles. They can be washed with a bit of soap to remove any slime or grime that has gone on it. They can be scrubbed lightly with a soft brush to remove dirt. Washing them also makes them a less attractive cookie to insects.
185
Protect Them From Drying Up
There are a couple of oil brands that can use on cork handles. However some may give a slight oily feel. One that is recommended is Tru-Oil which does not leave a sleek feel if used properly. Oiling cork handles also gives them a slight shine highlighting its natural grains of which add to the rod’s aesthetics as well.
187
Remove Plastic Wraps
One very important thing is to remove the plastic wraps that are used to protect cork handles during transportation and display. Fishing with them on actually feels horrible and they also allow water from the lake or pond (where one fishes) to stay longer. Bacteria growth takes place and mould could grow as such waters are home to these microscopic creatures.
189
Conclusion Cork handles are good handles but they may not be suitable for every fishing rod. They are more fragile as compared to EVA and hypalon handles (as well as synthetic cork handles) but they have benefits that make them good handles to use. However, they do need extra care and with TLC given, they will last and serve you well.

Coarse Fishing Basics -Terminologies-
By Tengku Izzudin ‘The Guvnor’
Taking a step back from my article on feeder fishing
last month, let’s look at a bit more on the definitions and also the terminologies of coarse fishing. One might be able to browse online for many coarse fishing articles but might get swarmed with strange jargon. So let’s try to decode them a bit. Coarse Fishing The English definition for coarse fishing would be the pursuit of freshwater fish (or coarse fish) with rod and line excluding that of trout and salmon (or game fish). The more popular coarse fish species include roach (rutilus rutilus), bream (abramis brama), perch (perca fluviatilis), tench (tinca tinca), barbel (barbus barbus), chub (Squalius cephalus), and the carp family (crucian, common, linear, leather). Of course European fish are very different from our local species hence the techniques and tackle used are somewhat different. The normal coarse fishing techniques are basically float and bottom fishing, but the similarity with our local fishing almost ends there.
193
A general statement if I may say so, is coarse fishing tend to be more refined, using much lighter lines (10ozs sometimes!), small hooks (down to a size 24) and sensitive floats and rods with an idea to be more accurate and technical in their feeding and approach to catching fish. Coarse anglers target as many fish as possible to build up a good total weight from the same species or a variety of species so a lot depends on getting the methods just right to keep the bites coming. Match Fishing Its basically coarse fishing but done in a competitive manner much like a sport. Anglers pit their skills against the fish and against each other. There are several formats utilized, either individual, in pairs and also in a team. The matches too can cover several days and there are league tables set up. The Irish angling festival are an example of matches that attract a lot of anglers, as with Fishomania and Parkdean Masters in the UK, some with big payouts too! Hey, they take their match fishing seriously!
195
The governing body for international competitions is the Confédération Internationale de la Peche Sportive (C.I.P.S.), and their 2 day Angling World Championships is a team event, attracting some of the best freshwater anglers in the world. The winners are based on total catch weight instead of a heaviest single fish. So even regularly catching small fish will quickly build up your total weight. As with any sport, you can bet they’ll be the added pressure and stress during a match! Pleasure Fishing As the term indicates, it’s just a leisurely session of coarse fishing, sometimes not really thinking of catching loads of fish to compete but really to perhaps enjoy the outdoors, test out some new tackle and baits but catching well during a pleasure fishing session is always a welcomed thing.
197
Specimen Fishing A ‘specimen’ is not a fish species, rather the term is to indicate the pursuit of big fish specimens, or even a record breaking fish. Specimen hunters regularly seek out waters where they are certain that such big fish exists, and some target only a specific fish, even returning to the same spot the following year, confident in the fact that the fish they are after have grown heavier over the past year. Carp is a popular target species in Europe, so much so that dedicated carp tackle, baits, fishing methods and rigs are specifically developed to target these huge fish in waters dedicated for carp fishing only. These hardcore carp anglers dedicate their lives for that record carp! The bigger specimens are even named (such as Clarissa and Two Tone) and identified based on their markings.
199
Spinning It’s not the head that’s doing the spinning but it’s a term equal to that of lure fishing. Not much can be said here as I must say that our lure fishing tackle and expertise are much better than the Europeans! Hope this has helped a bit, there is such abundance of information online now sometimes we don’t know where to start. But as in any sport, getting the basics right should always be a priority. Don’t forget to join us in our Coarse Fishing Masterclass on the 17th of August! For details check out Coarse Fishing Malaysia page on Facebook. Till then, tight lines!

Junior Anglers
Get Your Kids Fish An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc. There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life. With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a section of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

My Holiday Adven By Amirul Irfan
For the past holiday I spent five
days in my hometown. I come from Penang, which is a fishing heaven to me. There are freshwater, estuary, and saltwater fishing areas which can offer some great fishing. Unfortunately, I had lim-
ntures
205
I did go out for a quick session in the morning, but it didn’t produce anything. I packed some gear for striped snakehead hunting and went to my favouritespot. The spot was dried up. I didn’t give up, so in the evening I came back and went through some bushes searching for water. Found some small ponds but all were mostly shallow, with only Gouramis and Climbing Perch swimming around.
207
On Wednesday, I decided to stop and fish at a lake in Perak with my family. We were hunting for peacock bass and sebarau. Forecasted bad weather didn’t stop us from fishing. Heavy rains which poured for a few minutes didn’t affect our fishing too. Surface activity was visible, but the heavy weeds deterred our efforts. Seeing schools of sebaraus splashing around is a real eye candy.
209
My younger brothers tried to hook some small fish under the jetty, using bread as bait. Only one was hooked, while the rest dropped back down shortly after being hooked. There were lots of baitfish around the jetty. These baitfish are a great source of food
211
We went back home from the lake and took our need to fish straight to a river near home the next day. I haven’t fished this stretch of river for a few months, but the sweet memories made here are still fresh in my mind. Despite being a pressured area since it’s just beside a road, the fish population here seems to be good. Heavy rains, murky water, and the loads of trash made fishing here a bit tough.
213
The weapons I used… These 4 gram spoons performed greatly with their original single hooks. Adding a feather/ treble hook really messed the action. The barbless spoons on this hook help with a quick and easy catch and release. I read this somewhere, on the internet… when fishing pressured waters, always down size. This proved to be successful. 7 gram spoons didn’t get much attention from fish, but on these small spoons, we had 2-3 sebaraus trying to whack it despite the murky water conditions.
215
We had a few hits and misses, but my dad told me and my younger brothers to keep on trying. Repeated casts produced this 24cm sebarau for me. It’s not big, but it’s a personal record. For this stretch of river I can say this is a decent fish and it put up a tough fight.
217
Using micro light tackle really maximized the satisfaction of fighting the fish. I was using the penfishingrods.com Goliath rod and the penfishingreels.com FD100AA reel, they performed great and I am very pleased. This sebarau didn’t give me much hope of landing it though. They’re called freshwater wolves for a reason. It made fast runs into snags and into weeds but I managed to land it in the heavy rain.
219
After a few hit and runs, this was the only fish hooked and landed. The barbless hook tucked in nicely at the corner of its mouth. These barbless hooks are a challenge the angler, but at the same time they are good for catch and release fishing.
221
After a few pictures I revived this fish for a few minutes. It regained strength and returned to its habitat, ready to fight another day. Please practice catch and release fishing, especially in pressured spots.
223
We came again the next day, also losing a few fish due to the barbless hooks. The water was even murkier and faster. We were fishing blind, not knowing where the snags are. We lost a few spoons, but it’s worth it. My dad hooked a fish on his last cast. This sebarau is my dad’s first sebarau on lure. After some photos this fish was released safely to grow bigger and badder, hopefully.
225
The barbless hook tucked perfectly at the corner of the mouth again. This fish hit the spoon near a log, where a few spoons have become precious jewellery for the fishy residents.
227
A family photo. My dad is in the blue shirt, hidden behind my younger brother, also wearing a blue shirt. My dad broke his rod shortly after this photo, as he was trying to free his snagged lure. The lure came back but the rod was a total loss. The rod has been used for more than a year, pulling all sorts of fish including stingrays. My dad bought it from a booth at the 2013 Angling and Outdoor Recreational Fair. This picture marks the end of the article, so happy fishing and tight lines everyone.
