e tested the Abu Garcia Veracity Pro rods in our lab back in January 2016. The casting one managed to take up to 20.7lb of pressure, of which is slightly above its rated 20lb test. Unfortunately we could not test it in the field as we had to return it in exchange for a spinning one.

Having a different rod in our hands we had no choice but to get back to our lab and put it through the pressure test. The target this time is 30lb, as claimed on the rod. So we secured a reel to it and secured the line to a ground anchor. 11

Start The Torture

We pushed the Veracity Pro up all the way to about 24lb with a lot of worry as it was bending quite dangerously. We continued to push it until it touched about 26lb and then we decided to stop in fear it may just break. It was 4lb shy of the targeted 30lb.

Field Test

We took the Veracity Pro to our usual field testing site and had a go with the gladiators there. These big dirty fighters would make minced meat or in this case â&#x20AC;&#x153;fiberizedâ&#x20AC;? graphite out of lesser rods. There is no mercy once the bait is taken. 13

Casting Abilities

For bait we used half a bait fish and cast it out into the middle of the pond near the pillars of a restaurant that is built out into the pond. The Veracity Pro cast pretty well allowing us to land our baits into the zone (where the gladiators hang out) over and over again.

Fish Management

Not long later the Veracity Pro started to do a bend and the reel starting screaming. We were in for a fight. I palmed the spool and proceeded to drag the gladiator out away from the pillars, right into the open space. The Veracity Pro has just enough power to turn the heads of these gladiators. 15

Not For Brute Force

The Veracity Pro is not made to handle the barbaric brute force type of fishing. It is made for the more gentle sporty angler where the fish will have its chance to run. While we managed to turn a few heads, we did end up in the snags (pillars) too. Luckily we managed to get back out with fish intact.

Summary Test Thus Far

The Abu Garcia Veracity Pro looks sinisterly good in blood red but whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more important is that it is a capable rod. It may not be the lightest rod not the most sensitive rod, nor is it a hard fighting brute rod; but with the Fuji components and the price it comes in, it certainly is good value for money. 17

Abu Garcia Revo Toro S

he Abu Garcia Revo Toro S is one of Abu Garciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s answers to low profile saltwater casting reels. It comes in white side plates and a black frame looking somewhat like a reel made for the imperial storm troopers who are the main ground force of the Galactic Empire (Star Wars).

High Performance

The Revo Toro S is a powerhouse of a reel that is made to fight hard, subduing monster after monster. It is one heck of tough reel that can take in lots of lines thus allowing you to mess about with the saltwater gladiators of the seas.

Powerful Drag

The drag system on the Revo Toro S would give hard fighting brutes a run for their money. It comes with a Power stack Carbon Matrix drag system rated with a 25lb max drag. To see if it meets what it claims we took it to our lab for a bit of torture.

Lab Test

Back at our lab we put it through the pressure test. Securing the line to a ground anchor we started to apply force. We got it easily to 20lb with the drag running smooth. We continued on to a high drag pressure almost maxing out the drag and we got it to 26.5lb with the drag still smooth. 25

To see how it will performed we took it to Pulau Jarak (Jarak Island) for a test drive. The Revo TORO S is a reel for big things.

Casting Abilities

The Revo Toro S come with both a magnetic and a centrifugal braking system. This make casting easier. Casting big lures or jigs are thus its forte. That being said the Revo Toro S is a decent reel to cast with giving decent distances with very good spool control. 27

Fighting Abilities

We managed to bully a few fishes dragging them out of their hiding place with relative ease. The larger round knob makes cranking and fighting more comfortable. Although the fishes caught are of decent weight, none of them managed to provide a fight worthy of the Revo Toro S. The reel has proven itself to be an overkill in this instance.

Summary

If you are in the market for a saltwater low profile powerhouse, the Abu Garcia Revo Toro S is one of the reels to consider. It is a good performer with lots of power allowing you to do battle with confidence. 29

Too Easy

We had a powerhouse in our hands and all we caught were gladiator wannabes instead of the real gladiators. This time we ended up the bully. The Revo Toro S made bullying way too easy.

Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 Part 2

ast issue we were mesmerized by the looks of the Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 baitcasting reel. We also took it to the lab and tortured it with the pressure test where it did well reaching 8.3kg (1.3kg above the 7kg mark). It did so with a smooth drag. This time let us see how it performed on the field.

Field Test

To test the Salty Stage BV8 we took it to our usual field testing site where big and muscular gladiators sit in wait to do battle. This pond is the Natural Exotic Fishing Pond, a commercial fishing pond (pay to fish) in Rawang, Malaysia. Anglers who have fished here know what is at stake. 35

Casting Abilities

When it comes to casting the Salty Stage BV8 brings out the charms. Coming with magnetic brakes it cast well with good control over the spool, giving decent distances especially when we needed to land our baits near the pillars of a restaurant that sits somewhat at the centre of the pond. This is where some of the gladiators hide.

Fighting Abilities

Having need to land our baits near pillars, I think you can imagine just how thin a line we are walking. We have to get the fish away from the pillars or risk getting snagged; something which has happened many a times. With the Salty Stage BV8â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drag pushed up we managed to drag the gladiators out into the open. It also has enough drag to offer good amounts of control. 37

Added Excitement

The Salty Stage BV8 comes with a line out alarm which provides for added excitement especially during the fight. We have often heard of the term screaming reels. The Salty Stage BV8 screams during the fight (although not loud) and this is simply one of the best sounds to an angler. Few low profile baitcasting reels come with this feature.

Smooth Performer

Battle after battle went on smoothly with the Salty Stage BV8 performing very well. We landed a few tough fighting gladiators; mainly the red tail Amazon catfish. The power handle and the bigger round made fighting these gladiators more comfortable with better grip. Before long they were posing for a shot. 39

Panicky State

I am happy that we did not lose any fish but we got spooled once. This was the first fish that took the bait. The brute took off into the open (fortunately), heading over to the other side of the pond. In a short while we reached the monofilament backing. I proceeded to max out the drag. I still got spooled but luckily the line held up. That happens when we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have enough lines in the spool.

Summary

The Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 baitcasting reel is a high performance reel with lots to offer. It looks good, fights well, and the line out alarm is nice when the fishes try to make off with oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bait. Good reel to think about should you be considering low profile baitcasting reel.

hen it comes to fishing for snakeheads both brown snakeheads (haruan) and giant snakeheads (toman), one of the lures frequently used a frog type lures. A few months ago the Minnows Inc Beito Original King Frog reached our shores.

The King Frog comes in a striking mix of colours. Some of these colours come with flakes that reflect lights. Having such striking colours does provide an advantage. The main one being an attractive moving target that will easily catch the attention of predators fishes. 45

The King Frog comes with skirts and two swimming appendages that look like frog legs. This gives the illusion of an actual frog swimming making it more attractive to predator fishes and thus getting them to strike.

Hard Bodied

When it comes to frog type lures, there are two types. The hard bodied and the soft. The King Frog comes with a hard plastic body. The benefit of being hard bodied is that it will not take in water like some of the soft bodied ones (except soft plastic baits) that will have to be squeezed out after a few cast of risk losing balance. 47

The King Frog comes equipped with strong Owner Double hooks that dangle at the back in between the appendages and the skirt. These hooks are of high quality. The skirt and the appendages provide some â&#x20AC;&#x153;weedlessnessâ&#x20AC;? to it.

Field Test

To test the effectiveness of the King Frog we gave a few out to various field testers to have them tested in various places in different parts of the country. As for us, we headed out to a few nearby ponds and had a go with them. 49

Casting

The King Frog cast well. It is well weighted, and being compact it goes to good distances with an easy cast. It is one of those lures that are fun to cast. It is like you get satisfaction from a good cast almost all the time.

The Action

The King Frog is a floating type lure. When twitched it moves like a real frog moving in the water. When paused it sits with its back underwater pointed downwards and its head pointed upwards. Both its appendages hang about underwater in a weird indecent sort of way while the skirts point upwards. Looks more like a dead frog floating. 51

Catching Fish

Unfortunately I did not catch any fish fishing in a heavily pressured pond near my place. I had two strikes but unfortunately they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stick. The other field testers did better. Quite a few brown snakeheads and giant snakeheads were caught and landed.

A Low Point

While the King Frog did well in attracting fishes and getting them to strike, one issue we noticed is that the hooks are a little thick and thus there were quite a number of failed hook-ups. Changing them to thinner hooks made the difference. 53

Summary

Overall the Minnows Inc Beito Original King Frog is a good frog lure that fishes find attractive. Should you decide to add them to your lure collection do note that we highly recommend changing the hooks to thinner diameter hooks for improved hook-ups. 55

Decoy Tracinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Single Hooks

ecoy makes very good hooks and they have proven themselves over and over. Still we wanted to know how good they are. Naturally the best thing to do will be to bring them to our lab and have them tested. We decided to test the Decoy Tracinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Single 31 OP lure hooks.

Before we did anything to these hooks we needed to know if they are sharp to begin with. We ran it on our plastic spoon to see if it will catch on. The Tracinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Single 31 hooks caught on easily proving that they are sharp.

t s e T r e t a Freshw

Next we drowned them in freshwater for 24 hours. Most of us would not leave our hooks in water for 24 hour when we fish thus this test will be more than sufficient to see if they will rust in freshwater for the duration of our fishing. After 24 hours in the freshwater we found no sign of rust. We ran it on our plastic spoon and they caught on which means that the hooks are still sharp.

Saltwater Test Next we drowned them in saltwater for 24 hours to see if they would be able to go on for at least 24 hours without rusting in this corrosive solution. After 24 hours we removed them from the saltwater solution and inspected them. No signs of rust.

Next we just had to run them on our plastic spoon to see if they are still sharp. No point fishing with a blunt hook right? These hooks caught onto the plastic spoon which means that they remained sharp even after drowning them in saltwater for 24 hours.

Summary

We have found the Decoy Tracinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Single Hooks to be good hooks. They are indeed quality hooks and they have proven themselves in our lab in both salt and freshwater environments as well as the sharpness test. ver the past 3 issues we discussed about hard lures, mainly crankbaits and their characteristics, as well as how they work. Before we actually go into fishing them (lure playing techniques), let us first look into preparing them.

Before Casting

Before you cast out your lure, the first thing that you should do is to ensure that your lure swims right. With this I mean the direction of which it swims to. You want your lure to be swimming in a straight line. It will wobble or shimmer while it is being cranked but you want it coming back in a straight line. 85

Testing Your Lures

Test your lure by casting it out and cranking it back in. If it swims off in one direction (left or right), it needs to be adjusted. A lure that swims off in one direction other than in a straight line will prove to be difficult to manipulate. They are pretty darn ineffective and very seldom catch fish.

Adjusting The Lure

Another thing you will notice is that certain lures come with the bill set at a different angle. Some are set horizontal to the lure. Be Careful

If your lure swims to the right, bend the towing point very slightly to the left. If it swims to the left, bend the towing point to the right slightly. Cast your lure out and crank it back again. If it still does not swim right, adjust the towing point again very slightly. Cast the lure out again and crank it back. Adjust the towing point until you get the lure swimming back to you in a straight line.

Adjusting The Action

The wobble of the lure can be adjusted but first, a note of caution. With plastic lures, doing such adjustments may not work and could damage the lure if you are not careful. Thus I do not recommend doing so on plastic lures. They work on wooden lures.

The action of the lure can be tuned by bending the towing point upwards or downwards. Bending the towing point upwards gives the lure a shimmy type action. Bending downwards gives it a slow wobble.

Modern Lures

Most modern lures will not require such adjustments to their action as they are well adjusted in the factories before they are packed. These lures have been tuned for a certain action and will swim well (most of the time). Doing adjustments to them may very well damage them. 91

Plain Lousy

Some lures seem to be un-adjustable. No matter how you adjust them they will not swim right. Well, some lures are just plain lousy. They came manufactured badly. Best thing to do with these lures is to remove the hooks, attached a key chain ring to the towing point and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got yourself a new key chain that tells everyone youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re an angler.

All About Hooks: Part 4 Treble Ho oks

reble hooks are basically three hooks attached to one. Some people call them triple hooks but the actual term for it is treble hooks or trebles for short. The reason why some call them triple hooks could be because they are actually three hooks attached to one.

Uses

Treble hooks are generally used with lures, jigs, spoons, spinners, etc. The use of treble hooks stems from the believe that they increase the chance of hooking up a fish thus why they are popular. Well, they do but they also do come with a few disadvantages especially with fishes that have tough jaws. 95

Treble hooks come in various designs. There are the short shank and long shank ones. They also come with various types of bends including the usual rounded bend, the limerick bend, inline bend, etc. There are also the wide gape and narrow gape types.

Single Lure Hooks

When it comes to lures, most of them come with treble hooks. These days more anglers are opting for single hooks, exchanging them with the trebles that originally comes with the lures that they buy. The normal single hooks used for bottom fishing are not recommended to be used with lures. For lures there are the single lure hooks. 97

Single hooks made for lures come with a larger hook eye. Some come with hook eyes that are not only larger but also opened, allowing one to just slot the lureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ring into it, and then clamping the eye close. Bottom fishing single hooks have smaller eyes that will fit too rigidly on the ring.

The single lure hooks comes in different designs. Some come with long shanks, some come with short shanks, some are rounded, etc. There are single hooks for most every lure type as well as personal preferences. An example is this opened eye hook. Allows for easy attachment to lures. Just squeeze down the eye to lock. 99

Treble hooks of which were and still do come with most lures have a few disadvantages. For one they do cause more damage to a fishes mouth, and they can be bent opened as well as crushed by the powerful jaws of certain fishes. Single hooks do not have such issues. Single hooks have a lower chance of getting snagged when fishing around snags as compared to trebles.

I for one prefer using single hooks on my lures and have most of them changed. At the end of the day it is still up to personal preferences and which configuration provides for the highest amount of confidence.

he 1st Pulau Jarak Open Jigging Tournament 2015 was held on the 27th December 2015. The tournament was organized by Monster Jigging Team and Redline Enterprise, and sponsored by OAG Sdn. Bhd. (Outdoor Adventure Group).

The event attracted 66 participants, mostly hard core â&#x20AC;&#x153;jiggersâ&#x20AC;? to an assault on the brutes that call Pulau Jarak (off the coast of Lumut, Perak, west Malaysia) home. Pulau Jarak is home to a variety of fishes such as big groupers, snappers, trevallies, mackerel, barracudas, etc. 107

ello everyone!

I hope the month of January has been a good start for everyone. For me,it has been a bit tough, because of the hot weather. Fish were very passive throughout the day and the only chance to get a decent bite is fishing at first light. This snakehead is my first catch of 2016,on a pop frog popped slowly beside some grass.

This is my second snakehead for 2016.It hit this 7cm clone of the Rapala Shallow Shad Rap on my last cast. Look at the size of the lure compared to its head. This fish was very aggressive and fought hard. The Redhead colour seems to be effective for haruans here, probably because they havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seen it before. 113

This snakehead also came on the same clone lure in the evening. I saw this snakehead resting on a weed bed, and a slow retrieve with a long pause managed to get the attention of this snakehead and another one as well. Both of them tried to take the lure, but this one got it first. The Surecatch D-Legend rod helped to lift the fish out of the water quickly before it made it to some structure.

Here is a juvenile snakehead caught on a Zman 3â&#x20AC;? Minnowz by my younger brother. This little snakehead was very greedy and it fought very hard as well.

Here is another juvenile caught on a spinnerbait with a 2â&#x20AC;? Berkley Powerbait Powergrub as a trailer. The flash and vibration managed to trigger bites from juvenile snakeheads.

This juvenile snakehead was caught on the 3.8â&#x20AC;? Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad. I saw it rising in front of me with another snakehead, and I tried fishing it slowly. This fish hit the Slinky Shad so hard that I thought it was a big snakehead. 117

The 2â&#x20AC;? Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad in Shad colour. Perfect colour to match the hatch at my favourite spot. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure it will match natural colours in other locations as well. I had a few misses from juvenile snakeheads on this little swimbait.

Here is a juvenile Tinfoil Barb/Lampam, taken on a popper with some bread on the trebles .The Tinfoil Barbs in the area were very sensitive, and chumming with some bread to create a feeding frenzy was the only way to get them to hit my popper with bread. For the lure purist, this may not sit well but sometimes one need to be creative. 119

This Striped Snakehead is protecting itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fry. I spotted a few snakeheads hanging around this shallow area which is packed with weeds. It is a good spot to target with small soft plastics. I hope 2016 will continue to go on very well for everyone.
