emember when you first got your driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licence and the keys to your first car? Remember the heart pumping excitement you felt when you turned the ignition? When it comes to fishing reels I seldom get these feelings these days having spent many years in the industry until I was handed the new Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme.

Heart Pumping Excitement

As I held the new Revo MGXtreme for the first time in my hands, I instantly fell in love with it. It was love at first sight (maybe first touch). It felt light and it felt snug in my hands being a smaller sized reel. It was made for me (I wish).

Sporty Design

The new Revo MGXtreme is one sporty looking reel. It comes with carbon fibre swept handle and carbon fibre star drag. It has metallic red spool control cap, handle knob (cork) covers, etc. Its body is black in colour. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good looks is not of the Ferrari kind but more like the Bat mobile sort of look. Dark and good looking. 13

Lighter In Weight

Comparing to the older Revo MGXtreme, the new MGXtreme is lighter in weight. The previous Revo MGXtreme weighs 139grams while the new one weighs 128 grams. The difference may not seem to be a lot in numbers but when it comes to feel, the new MGXtreme feels somewhat lighter. Psychological perhaps.

IVCB-4 Brakes

The new Revo MGXtreme comes with the Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB-4â&#x201E;˘), a proven and effective breaking system that allows for very manageable casts. The IVCB-4 system uses what is called a flying arm system to control the spool.

Drag Power

To test the drag power of the Revo MGXtreme we took it to our lab and put it through the pressure test. We turned up the drag to about 80% and managed to a respectable 8lb with zero loss of smoothness. We then dial the pressure up higher getting a reading of slightly over 12lb. Still smooth. We squeezed more and managed to peak at about 13.6lb; 1.6lb over specs. *Straight pull test without flexing the rod.

Live Performance

We took it to our usual field testing arena; the pond where gladiators such as the Amazon red tail catfish, the Mekong catfish, Asian red tail catfish, etc. standby for a fight and photo opportunities. First off; the Revo MGXtreme cast really well giving good distances. Its IVCB-4 brakes work really well making it an easy reel to cast. 17

The Battle

The Revo MGXtreme managed to turn quite a few fishes, escaping the snags (luck too played its part) and helping to tire the gladiators out fast with its high drag. That said, we did lose a fish too that just couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be stopped.

The new Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme is a very capable reel that is smaller in size and fits snugly in my hands. Fitting snugly has a advantage. I had a better overall grip which adds confidence too during casting as well as during fights. As for smoothness, it is smooth although one can certainly feel the IVCB-4 brakes working.

ecently I have been teaching small 1 inch soft plastic grubs to swim with the hopes of seducing barramundis while doing so. Casting these small grubs can be quite a challenge eapecially since they are lightweight and the area where I fish is windy. 25

Taking Flight

Walking to the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge and slowly walking in is boring and thus taking flight into the pond is the only option. The further the better. The Xrossfield does this really well casting our little learner way out giving it more area to swim. The tip is really good for casting these lightweight baits being flexible yet not too soft.

Nice Blank

The Xrossfield has a nice blank for this sort of fishing. The 30 Ton graphite blank it comes in has a good backbone to about 65% of the rod followed by a smooth curve all the way to the tip. This adds to the enjoyment of the angler during the battles. That said, the blank certainly does not feel like a 30 Ton graphite blank but still, it is a very enjoyable rod to fish with. 27

Clean Look

The Xrossfield comes with a clean black and white design giving it a simple unassuming look. This simple look does not translate to plain or boring. It is simple in a good looking way.

Components

The Xrossfield comes with quality Fuji guides and reel seat providing good performance with smoother casts and reduced wear and tear on fishing lines. It also comes with high quality EVA handle.

Field Test

We took the Xrossfield to a barramundi pond with a few little soft plastic grubs that we intend to teach swimming to and a few jigheads. We secured a finesse bait casting reel to it that has been filled with 8lb braided lines. 31

The Xrossfield is a lightweight rod and it casts really well sending my 1 inch softbaits far out into the pond allowing me to cover more ground. It also fights well with a slower tip but with enough power to manage the fish. Every fight was an enjoyable one.

ecoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead is a softbait anglers dream come true especially since it is weedless. It comes with a super sharp hook (I actually got hook accidentally not once, not twice, but three times) that easily latches on to skin (penetrates easily), finger nails, plastic spoons, wood, etc. 37

Saltwater Torture

First we wanted to see how it will do in saltwater. We placed one in a container of saltwater for over 24 hours. After over 24 hours we removed the jighead for inspection and found no rust. We ran it through a plastic spoon and it caught on confirming that it still remains sharp. 39

Field Test

To test the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead we took some lighter action tackle (since the jighead is for finesse fishing) and headed to some barramundi ponds. Since these ponds are known to have specimens from about 700 grams to about 2kg, I think the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 can handle them. 41

Good Fit

I decided to use my old trusty Abu Garcia Revo Premier reel with the new Abu Garcia Bass Beat II rod rated light; for this test. For bait I used my all time favourite Berkley Powerbait 1 inch grub. For test I used the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 size 3 weighing 2.5 grams that fits the grub well.

Hook Strength

We hit a lot of fish and the hook penetrated the fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lips easily. We lost quite a few fishes too as they managed to throw the hook. Increasing the drag pressure helped improve the landing rate. We also lost a few good size fishes due to the hook opening up. We had to turn the fish away from the water wheel and the added pressure caused the hook to open. 43

Verdict

The Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead does what it is designed to do well. It is super sharp penetrating the fishes lips easily. It is weedless of which is great especially when fishing for fishes that hideout in weedy areas. Step past its limits and it opens up of which is good and bad. Bad because you lose a fish. Good because it is easy to pull free when snagged. Bend the hook back in shape and continue fishing. 45

he Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are made for saltwater light game fishing. These jigheads come with super sharp hooks in sizes that fit small baits such as 1 inch soft plastic baits and they fit really well.

Hold Baits In Place

Having to readjust your soft baits after every three or four casts are a thing of the past. The Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads comes with bait holder that Decoy calls the “Magic Keeper.” The “Magic Keeper” holds baits in place preventing them from moving and coming off the hook.

How Good Are They?

No doubt that the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are good products after all most things made in Japan are good, right? To see how good they really are we tested them. First we drowned one in saltwater solution to test its saltwater capabilities in our 24 hours saltwater test. 51

After over 24 hours we removed the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jighead from the saltwater solution and inspected it thoroughly for rust. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see any rust on the hook or the point but there was a little discoloration at the eye.

Second Sharpness Test

After the staying in saltwater for over 24 hours we wanted to see if it still remained as sharp as it was or at least still sharp since saltwater is a corrosive agent. Running the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 on the surface of a plastic spoon proves it sharpness. It easily held on to the spoon. 53

Field Test

To test the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads we headed to some barramundi ponds to put them against the powerful acrobats. Being classed as light saltwater hooks I feel that the barramundis in these ponds will be a suitable challenger.

Handling The Fights

With a super sharp point, penetration into the fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lip was easy. They held on pretty well too helping us land a good number of fishes. Just to up the fun in our little tug-of-war with the barramundis we cranked up the drag pressure. This time the hook bent open when larger fish took the bait and ran. 55

Verdict

The Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are super sharp and easily penetrates the lips of the fishes that took the bait. We did lose a few due to the hooks opening up when using higher pressure. With an appropriate setup and drag pressure the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads work really well.

Small Wonder

Small, lightweight, battles like the Incredible hulk in silk. Without trying to sound like a tiny cross dressing Incredible Hulk, the Revo ALCIB7 is all of that with a cute look. I seriously meant cute. It also performs really absolutely well.

Sporty Performer

The Revo ALC-IB7 certainly looks smaller. Pick it up and it feels lighter. It looks sporty with its carbon handle and black EVA knob. Cast with it and smiles appear as it cast so easily or rather, effortlessly sending lures to very good distances. It is certainly an enjoyable reel to use.

Easy Spool Control

While the casting is smooth, the Revo ALC-IB7 is an easy reel to control reducing â&#x20AC;&#x153;bird nestingâ&#x20AC;? or spool overruns during the cast. The dual braking system being magnetic and centrifugal makes the spool manageable even on harder casts.

My Take

I could cast with this reel all day. It is light, easy to cast with, and fits in my hands very well. The grip is better as it is smaller in size as compared to the more traditional Revos. Lovely reel indeed. 65

Braking Systems: Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB-4â&#x201E;˘)

he Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB4â&#x201E;˘) system came about some 8 or 9 years ago with the first generation Abu Garcia Revo MGX. It made cast control or spool control easier making the then Revo MGX a good reel to learn bait casting with.

While to me, nothing beats reels that come both with a centrifugal brakes system and a magnetic braking system when it comes to learning bait casting; the then Revo MGX and its IVCB brakes was really easy to cast with. How Does It Work?

It works using centrifugal force. Take some line and tie a sinker at one end. Hold the other end and spin the sinker around. The faster you spin the higher the forces pushing outwards, away from your hand. That force is the centrifugal force. The faster the spool spins, the higher the pressure on the brakes (pins) that pushes outwards against the plate.

Flying Arm

The IVCB-4 uses the flying arm concept of which is different than that of the traditional centrifugal brakes. Four arms swing outwards against a plate creating friction. The faster the spool spins the higher the friction these arms apply on the plate. 93

Setting The Pressure

With traditional centrifugal brakes one needs to remove the side plates and release and lock certain brake pins or brakes shoes. Releasing more pins or shoes adds to higher brake pressure. Locking more pins reduces the number of pins or shoes doing the braking thus lowering the pressure.

With the flying arm system in the IVCB-4, a dial is used from the outside of the reel (at the side plate). Turning the dial moves the plate nearer to or further from the flying arms. Nearer for higher brake pressure and further for lower brake pressure. Removing two of the arms reduces pressure even further. The Infinitely Variable Centrifugal Brake (IVCB-4â&#x201E;˘) system certainly has some benefits as compared to the usual centrifugal systems. The main benefit is the ease of setting. Another benefit is that the IVCB-4 allows for more precise brake settings. Contents Page

Fun with the Berkley Powerbait 3.8” Saltwater Slinky Shad

ne of my favourite baits to fish with is the 3.8” Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad. The Slinky Shad is a deadly swimbait when it comes to Striped Snakeheads. The Slinky Shad is available in two sizes which are 2.8” and 3.8” to fit multiple situations.

The Slinky Shad works well on multiple retrieves. One of the easiest ways is a straight retrieve. My favourite way to fish it is fishing it weightless in weeds and lily pads. This Striped Snakehead took it right after shaking it on top of lily pads. I used a 3/0 Mustad EWG Hook and rigged the Slinky Shad weedless. 97

This fish slammed the Slinky Shad right after it dropped from grass. The clear colour with silver fleck is my favourite as it matches natural baitfish colours. Snakeheads even eat it even if it is laying motionless.

This snakehead blasted the Slinky Shad in thick hydrilla. Eventhough the Slinky Shad wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the water this snakehead went for it. Matching the hatch and fishing during prime feeding time early in the morning was key.

This 45cm Striped Snakehead gulped the Slinky Shad in an open area between reeds. The area had baitfish congregating which caught my attention. A quick cast with a stop and go retrieve fooled this fish which is my biggest for the year. I also noticed that this fish was recaptured. I released it 10 days earlier after landing it with the Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw.

Passing the Slinky Shad through key points like grass islands and structure are good approaches to produce bites. This 30-ish cm snakehead came from an area with a lot of reeds. It missed the Slinky Shad for roughly 3-5 times before I finally managed a good hookset.

This snakehead took the Slinky Shad just a meter in front of me. A great ending for a great birthday quick session. I dropped the Slinky Shad over some grass and a solid whoop sound was a signal to set the hook hard with my Abu Garcia Revo Rocket and Abu Garcia Veracity Pro 10-20lb.With 30lb Berkley Super Fireline, a solid hookset was no problem. The feeling of making a solid hookset with a solid fish at the end of the line is amazing.

All snakeheads in this article were released. Let them grow bigger and give other anglers a chance to catch them and who knows you might catch them again as well. The snakehead I recaptured had a little increase in weight. Recapturing it was beyond my expectations and it drives me to continue releasing snakeheads for future fun. Contents Page

ure Fishing Malaysia recently held a reel maintenance and fishing technique workshop at the Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s University Lakeside Campus. The clinic was organised by Pure Fishing Malaysia to help educate anglers on the importance of maintaining their reels and how to maintain them.

Expert reel maintenance guru, Tan Kok Ming showed and taught participants some of the tips and tricks of reel maintenance for various types of reels such as spinning reels, low profile bait casting reels, and round reels or multipliers. 105

After the reel maintenance session participants went on to learn some bait casting techniques by experienced tournament angler, Kay; sharing tips and tricks on casting followed by a fishing session at the Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lake.

It was an eventful day with a total of 60 participants who have taken time off an attended the event. Lookout for more events in the future to help add value to your fishing lifestyle. 107
