bu Garcia has this series of rods that I love; the Fantasista series. Soon to come is the all new Fantasista Aurora. Fans of Abu Garcia will remember a reel called the Abu Garcia Revo Aurora, a beautiful reel designed by Abu Garciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Japanese product team years ago. Lovely. 11

Combination Of Two Greats

The Fantasista Aurora is a combination of both using the strength, lightweightness, sensitivity, and feel of the Fantasista rods, and the beautiful colours of the Revo Aurora reel. Combining both of them brings about a very beautiful rod that fishes really well; like a well designed exotic super car, the kind of car you go to when you get bored of the Ferrari.

Well Balanced

The Fantasista Aurora is a very well balanced rod. It is lightweight and goes well with light weight reels. I tested the rod with my favourite spinning reel, the Pflueger Patriarch. It was certainly a match made in heaven.

High Quality Components

The Fantasista Aurora comes with high quality components by Fuji. It comes with the beautiful Fuji TVS reel seat that allowed for more feel and better sensitivity. The Fantasista Aurora uses Fujiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new concept KR guides (Semi Micro Guides) of which provides for the added advantage of tangle free fishing.

Good Sensitivity

The Fantasista Aurora is made using high quality graphite blank that is lightweight and provides for high levels of sensitivity. Combining it with the Fuji TVS reel seat adds for better sensitivity as it allows for more contact to the blank.

Field Test

The Fantasista Aurora cast exceptionally well. With a tip that has very low amounts of wobble during the cast, every cast is confident and accurate. Casting distance is also very good getting very good distances.

Fish Management

The Fantasista Aurora manages the fights well too. We took our Medium Light (ML) action rod to do battle at the barramundi pond in Jugra, Selangor. We battled a few good sized ones weighing close to 2kg and it has enough backbone power to easily manage them. Definitely more than enough power needed for a swift victory.

Summary

The Abu Garcia Fantasista Aurora is definitely a rod I will definitely get for my fishing. It is lightweight, sensitive, cast well, fights well, and it looks darn good. No reason to not get one other than the issue has to do with a tiny bank account and shallow pockets. 19

Pflueger Supreme XT

flueger has always been on the lighter side of things and the same thing can be seen with the Supreme XT of which Pflueger claims to be the lightest in its class. Its â&#x20AC;&#x153;light weightinessâ&#x20AC;? is achieved with the use of a magnesium body and rotor, lightweight carbon fibre handle, and ported aluminium spool.

Modest Design

When it comes to design, the Supreme XT is modestly designed. Not too flashy and not too loud, this reel may not create a commotion but its subtle metallic candy orange linings on the gun metal coloured aluminium spool, and the sporty looking light weight handle holds hints of its character. 25

Casting Abilities

The aluminium spool comes fitted with rubber which allows braided lines to hold on too and not slip. The Supreme XT is not a sleeper. With braided lines filled in it is ready to take on fights and the tough aluminium spool is not one to crack under pressure.

Smooth Performance

The Supreme XT is a smooth performer. It is smoother than some of the reels that carry a higher price tag. The smoothness is unlike some of the more high end reels that feel almost vacuum like. There is a hint of connectivity of the handle to the gears. Just a hint. 27

Ready For The Sea

The Supreme XT comes ready to take on the finned creatures of the sea. It comes with 10 HPCR (High Performance Corrosion Resistant) bearings to resist the corrosive qualities of saltwater, and a sealed carbon fibre drag system that blocks out water, and provides for what Pflueger claims to be a 14lb max drag on this size 40 reel.

Lab Test

Back at our lab we put the Supreme XT to the test. With a 14lb max drag target we pushed up the drag and the torture begun. It easily touched 14lb and then it maxed out at 18.5lb; very impressive. The drag remained smooth with no sticky feel. 29

Field Test

To test the Supreme XTâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prowess in the real world we brought it to the Natural Exotic pond in Rawang, Selangor (Malaysia). We pitted it against the some of the hard fighting predators that lie in wait for a battle. We cast our baits near the pillars of the restaurant that sits on them.

Good Control

The Supreme XT had a few fights being able to manage the Amazonian red tail catfishes that took our bait. There is enough drag to pull the fishes out of the danger zones. The drag is also smooth even on high drag. There was no sign of stickiness from the drag even after a few fights. 31

Summary

The Pflueger Supreme XT may be a modestly design reel but when it comes to fishing, it is by no means modest. It is smooth (both cranking and drag), it has a strong enough drag, and it fights well. One more thing I like to add is that it lays lines in the spool well too. So, here you go... a reel in a simple modest package.

Veritas 2.0 Testing Grounds: Natural Exotic Pond Rawang Series: Veritas 2.0 Model: VRTC662-5 (Medium) Opponents: Amazon Red Tail Catfish

he first Abu Garcia Veritas rod came about some 8 years ago and it was a hit. Abu Garcia recently launched the Veritas 2.0, a pearl white version of the earlier Veritas of which was plain white. But there is more to this new 2.0.

A Rod For Stormtroopers

If you are a fan of Star Wars you will know why I call the Veritas 2.0 the rod for Stormtroopers. The pearl white and black design of the rods conjures up images of Stormtroopers. It simply suits them well. Not many superstitious folks like white rods but personally I think the Veritas 2.0 looks good.

Components

The Veritas 2.0 comes battle ready with lightweight Titanium alloy guides with SiC inserts which is great for heat distribution (reducing line fatigue) which translates to reduced line wear and tear. It also comes with quality EVA grips and Abu Garcia designed extreme exposure reel seat that allows for more blank contact and thus better feel. 39

Blank

The Veritas 2.0 uses what Abu Garcia calls the Spiral Carbon Core. The Spiral Carbon Core is simply a strand of carbon that is rolled within the blank from one section of the blank to a lower section (tip to butt). This creates a spiral after it is rolled. This is said to improve the break strength of the rod.

Overall Balance

The Veritas 2.0 that I have is slightly tip heavy which is good since it is a casting rod. Fixing a reel to it brings the weight back a little and lightens the rod slightly. Overall it feel good in the hands while fishing.

Field Test

We took the Veritas 2.0 to the Exotic Pond in Rawang, Selangor, Malaysia and pit it against the gladiators there (Amazon red tail catfish). The rod cast well shooting our baits right into the zone where the red tails waited. Before long we were in battle. The Amazon red tail catfish may be hard fighters but the Veritas 2.0 stood its ground.

The Veritasâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Spiral Carbon Core blank took the beatings well and has enough power to punch back, turning the heads of the gladiators away from the snags. The battles didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long on high drag setting.

Summary

The Abu Garcia Veritas 2.0 is a good rod with enough fighting power. It is also a reasonably light rod. Some people may not agree with the colour white but I personally like its cosmetics. More important to me is how it performs and it has done well. Calling all Stormtroopers, it is time to go catch some fish.

am Batman (deep husky voice)... and this is my reel.â&#x20AC;? I like all thing black but black alone is boring. I like mine sporty too and the invention of carbon fibre has been a blessing. Not only does carbon fibre look sporty and cool; it also is light weight. That is why I chose this reel, the Penn Fierce II. 51

Sporty In Black

Just like all of Batmanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s toys, the Penn Fierce II comes in black, with black carbon fibre strips on the rotor and the handle. It comes with a black EVA know that is contoured for a comfortable hold. The bail arm and wire is black and built thick.

Lightweight

Since I carry lots of equipment with me whether fighting crime or fishing; my tools need to be light. The Penn Fierce II is pretty light comparing to other reels within the same range. I believe most of you will like it light too.

Tough And Strong

Looks and being lightweight alone will not be good enough for the fishing I do. I want a reel that is tough and strong. If you’ve battled villains the like of the Joker and Penguin you’ll see that weak tools will not be of help. I do not underestimate the power and strength of the fishes I am targeting too. Amazon redtail cafishes are no softies and so are groupers; let’s not forget the mighty giant snakeheads.

Braid Ready

My friend, Spidey or Spiderman uses webs to help get from one place to another fast. Strand for strand his web is said to be 10 times the strength of steel. Thus why I prefer braided lines and use them all the time. Diameter to diameter, they are about twice the strength of mono. Maybe more. Hence why I prefer to use braid ready spools and this reel has it. 55

Take It From Batman

Well, if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good enough for me, it should be good enough for you too. Oh, there is one problem. The new Penn Fierce II is not in the market yet. It is targeted to be launch mid 2017. Guess you will have to be patient and wait for its launching. Meanwhile, happy fishing.

he PENN Fathom reel is a lightweight powerhouse of a reel. Being a full metal body reel it is built tough to handle the hard fighting fishes as well as the corrosive properties of seawater. It is not only built tough, it also looks tough. 69

Precise Gear Alignment

Being a full metal body reel, the side plates are not only tough. They keep the gears in precise alignment even under heavy loads allowing the angler to go into battle with confidence battling monsters.

Smooth Drag

The drag of a reel is crucial when battling a fish, especially a trophy fish. The Fathom comes with Pennâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proven powerful HT-100 drag system that stays smooth from the start to the end of the range helping the angler subdue fish after fish.

Fast In Its Class

Playing With Gladiators

Introduction To Bottom Fishing Baits

Part 4

ottom fishing is one of the more relaxing methods of fishing. All one need to do is to find a fishing spot, cast the bait in and wait for a bite while chatting with friends or reading a book; if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not in a competition that is.

Baits are important as they are what we use to attract fish and entice them to bite or what we anglers call â&#x20AC;&#x153;take the bait.â&#x20AC;? There are various baits for bottom fishing and they can be broken into dough baits, natural baits, and live baits. In this issue let us take a look at dough baits and some of the fishes that can be caught using dough.

Dough Baits

Think of anything and everything made of dough and you will not go wrong. Dough baits are simply baits made using dough. Examples of dough baits include bread (and buns), biscuits, chapati, dough balls, etc. Yes, they all entice Fish but there are certain things that can be done to up the effectiveness of these baits.

Dough To Bait

Dough comes in powdered form. Dough alone is so very boring. Most fishes wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even take another look let alone bite. Imagine eating pizza without anything on it. Adding flavour makes the pizza edible. Adding cheese, salami, olives, pineapple, etc. turns the pizza into am irresistible mouth watering meal. That is what you need to do to entice Fish.

When it comes to dough baits there are many things that can be added. Amongst the usual are chicken feed & fish pellets mixed with tapioca flour; one of the formulas I used to mix during my bottom fishing years long ago. I have caught plenty of fish using this mix.

Although it will leave your hands smelling like chicken feed for days, fishes like various carp and catfish species, tilapia, etc. do fall prey to it. In fact, the smellier the better. Unfortunately, non angling colleagues will remain just that; colleagues, as they will not be able to understand why on earth you use chicken scented perfume. 101

Bread

Instead of getting your hands dirty mixing your own dough you can use bread. Gardenia works better than the cheap variety but our brand conscious fishes has since fallen in love with Masimo and they want the one in green packaging. It is unbelievable how anglers used to debate this.

Bread alone catches fish but adding scent will certainly improve your chances. Certain scents like vanilla, pandan, banana essence, etc. work. One thing that has been a killer scent (to me) is the oil from a can of tuna.

Here is a tip... kill two birds with one stone. Buy a can of tuna in oil and a loaf of bread. Pour the oil out into a different container. Take the tuna and and make sandwiches. Add the oil to some of the bread that you intend to use as bread. Now you are ready to picnic and fish at the same time. Yes, I am speaking from experience.

I have caught lots of fish doing so. Amongst them are various catfish, some cichlid species, and brown snakeheads (paypond). I have used these oil added bread as fish attractant also known as ground baiting, and they work like magic. 105

Other Scents

Fruit essence, fish oil, salt, belacan, and a host of other scents work, some better and some lesser. You will have to experiment and there is a reason. The reason is that fishes at different ponds have a special little liking towards certain food and these fishes will take baits with that scent more readily. That is why anglers that keep catching fish at a certain pond keep their dough baits formula a secret. Use the same formula in another pond and he may not be catching fish.

Commercial Dough Mix

There are dough baits that have already been mixed available in the market. All one needs to do is add water and one is ready to fish. Yes, they do work. Then again let me stress that they work better at some ponds and not so in some other.

Summary

Dough baits are great baits to fish with. They are effective but certain factors other than the baits that you use play a part as well, such as diets, water conditions, pond environment, and of course luck too. So wear your lucky shirt or underwear on your next bottom fishing trip.

Fun with the Berkley Powerbait 3.8” Saltwater Slinky Shad

ne of my favourite baits to fish with is the 3.8” Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad. The Slinky Shad is a deadly swimbait when it comes to Striped Snakeheads. The Slinky Shad is available in two sizes which are 2.8” and 3.8” to fit multiple situations.

The Slinky Shad works well on multiple retrieves. One of the easiest ways is a straight retrieve. My favourite way to fish it is fishing it weightless in weeds and lily pads. This Striped Snakehead took it right after shaking it on top of lily pads. I used a 3/0 Mustad EWG Hook and rigged the Slinky Shad weedless. 111

This fish slammed the Slinky Shad right after it dropped from grass. The clear colour with silver fleck is my favourite as it matches natural baitfish colours. Snakeheads even eat it even if it is laying motionless.

This snakehead blasted the Slinky Shad in thick hydrilla. Eventhough the Slinky Shad wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t in the water this snakehead went for it. Matching the hatch and fishing during prime feeding time early in the morning was key.

This 45cm Striped Snakehead gulped the Slinky Shad in an open area between reeds. The area had baitfish congregating which caught my attention. A quick cast with a stop and go retrieve fooled this fish which is my biggest for the year. I also noticed that this fish was recaptured. I released it 10 days earlier after landing it with the Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw.

Passing the Slinky Shad through key points like grass islands and structure are good approaches to produce bites. This 30-ish cm snakehead came from an area with a lot of reeds. It missed the Slinky Shad for roughly 3-5 times before I finally managed a good hookset.

This snakehead took the Slinky Shad just a meter in front of me. A great ending for a great birthday quick session. I dropped the Slinky Shad over some grass and a solid whoop sound was a signal to set the hook hard with my Abu Garcia Revo Rocket and Abu Garcia Veracity Pro 10-20lb.With 30lb Berkley Super Fireline, a solid hookset was no problem. The feeling of making a solid hookset with a solid fish at the end of the line is amazing.

All snakeheads in this article were released. Let them grow bigger and give other anglers a chance to catch them and who knows you might catch them again as well. The snakehead I recaptured had a little increase in weight. Recapturing it was beyond my expectations and it drives me to continue releasing snakeheads for future fun. Contents Page

s an angler I have visited Lumut many times. Lumut is a doorway to many good fishing spots the likes of Pulau Sembilan (Nine Islands) and Pulau Jarak (Jarak Island). However, I have not gone there just for a holiday with my family, unless we intend to go to yet another island called Pangkor Island.

Recently I stayed at the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut in Lumut during my participation in the Swiss-Garden Damai Laut Food and Fun Hunt, and I must say that it was a pleasant surprise. The SwissGarden Beach Resort Damai Laut is a paradise for those wanting a place to relax. The resort sits deep in a secluded beach area of Teluk Kopiah Forest Reserve. Surrounded by greenery, the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut offers fresh air and relaxing sights, a good place to de-stress and forget about life for awhile.

Lovely Room

I pay a lot of attention to rooms and bed (especially bed) since there is where I recharge my energy for the next day’s travel. Although we didn’t get one with the lovely sea view, I am happy with the room. It is well decorated, comfortable, and more importantly; clean. The bed and pillows offered a goodnight’s relaxing sleep (and naps) being comfortable and clean. I slept well and woke refreshed. The air-conditioning is superb as I love lying under a comforter in a cold room. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 121

A basket of fruits placed on the coffee table welcomed is into our room. Not just the usual one or two bananas and / or apples. This time we got three or four bananas, apples, grapes, dragon fruit, kiwis, etc.; a proper fruit basket.

Activities

There are lots of activities that one can do (or not do). For the more adventurous there is the all terrain vehicle ride of which is lots of fun, riding round a sandy track. There is horse riding, a host of water sports activities, jungle walks, etc.

Should you prefer a more relaxing holiday you could take a dip in the pool, go for a massage at the Samara Spa, etc. If you suddenly feel the urge to torture your muscles, there is a gym for you to go to to workout those muscles. They have a something like a kidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s club too with scheduled activities.

A Mixture Holes & Tees

Antique furnitures. Just before arriving at the hotel one will pass a golf course. This here is the Damai Laut Golf & Country Club, a lovely place for golfers to put their balls into holes, 18 of them in fact (that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come out right). The par-72 championship course is designed by Ronald W. Fream, overlooking both the river and straits. For those who prefer the use of a buggy, this here is a course for you. 125

I Need More Time

I so want to spend more days there but other responsibilities took priority over extending my trip. Anyhow, I will be back there again as I want to experience more of the resort and enjoy my time there. Next time I will be spending more time in the resort experiencing it and perhaps, I will tell you more.

oing the same thing over and over again seems to be our thing. We usually frequent the same restaurants over and over again probably because of its familiarity, convenience, etc. Once in a while we look for something different. If your â&#x20AC;&#x153;once in a whileâ&#x20AC;? is up, try this place called Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.

Malaysian & Palestinian Love Story

It has been said that love knows no boundaries or borders and this here is proof. Although Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery started with Nur Azizarin and Mas Zuhairin Zubir joining hands and going into business; the story started much earlier. Nur Azizarin fell in love and married her late husband, a chef from Palestine. Nearing the end of his life, Nurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s husband handed over to her his recipes. Today, through the hands, heart, and mind of Nur and her business partner, Mas Zuhairin; her late husbandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legacy lives on in the delicious dishes served at Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery. 129

Maghlubah Rice

One very delicious main course that we had was the Maghlubah Rice that is cooked in a pot and brought to the table. The pot is then overturned (like when one turns over a bucket of sand when building a sandcastle) and the rice with everything else cooked in it comes out according to the shape of the pot. In the mix came tender lamb (mutton), a mixture of nuts, carrots, potatoes, raisins, etc. This dish is super tasty and offers a good dash of cholesterol. For those worried about cholesterol there is the option of chicken instead of lamb. I enjoyed this dish thoroughly and so did everyone else on the table.

Tres Leches

When it comes to desserts I like mine sweet and I think I may have found a heavenly one in the form of “Tres Leches,” Spanish for “three milk” a dessert that uses three types of milk of which if memory serves me well are evaporated milk, condensed milk, and fresh milk. This sweet delightful dessert comes with a cake drowned in sweet milk, topped with a slice of peach, strawberries, and blueberries. 131

Kunafa

Another lovely dessert for those whose preference of desserts are one that is lower in sweetness, the Kunafa would be one to try. It is fried crispy shreds of orange dough stuffed with a cheesy filling, and showered with bits of pistachios. For those that like it sweeter, adding syrup to it gives it the needed sweetness.

Pita Nachos

Now, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a big fan of nachos and you think Mexico makes the best nachos in the world, here comes competition. The pita nachos here are super yummy. They may be a little saltier than usual but they taste delicious having been fried with their special herbs and spices (secret formula). This is a must try.

Well, if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend that you have at least one meal here at the Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery. It certainly is worth a visit. Do not blame me should you over eat. Everyone who ate there that evening over ate; a testament to the good tasty food served.

Nice Setup

Looking for a place to eat one day we headed to a shopping mall called Da-Men. We wanted to dine in some place nice since we were celebrating a birthday and the ambience of Bali & Spice caught my eye. Although it did not look like a high-end dining place on Fifth Avenue, it certainly looked nice. 137

Balinese Cuisine

I ordered â&#x20AC;&#x153;Siap Bumbuâ&#x20AC;? or Balinese roasted chicken with lemongrass marinate. The portioning was really good. More importantly, the meal was delicious. The chicken on its own tasted a little bland but the chilli paste was really good although tongue melting spicy. The vegetable side it came with was lovely.

Another set we ordered is the “nasi campur” of which is a mixture of Balinese grilled prawns, squid, fish, chicken, and “sate lilit” (it is like chicken satay skewered with lemongrass). The food is superb. Every mouth full is accompanied by the bursting of flavours from the spices used. The chilli paste can be quite a torture as it burns the tongue but it taste so good one just cannot stop eating it. 139

Decent Prices

Personally I find the prices there to be slightly above average but decent due to the portioning, ambience, and good service rendered. When I have friends over and I want to see them having difficulty walking yet happy, this is where I bring them. Certainly worth every cent.
