More On The Rod

The Bassfield is a rod designed by Abu Garciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Japanese team. It started out as a concept rod for bass fishing with the idea that anyone from beginner to expert anglers will find this rod suitable and easy to manage.

It looks elegant in black with silver thread windings giving it that expensive look. It comes with contoured high quality EVA grips that are comfortable to hold and they are designed in a way that adds on to the image of the rod.

Comfortable To Use

The Bassfield is lightweight and is well balanced especially when fitted with a reel. Being lightweight, well balanced, and fitted with contoured EVA grips makes the Bassfield a comfortable rod to fish with especially when one will be spending hours casting with it.

Quality Guides

The Bassfield comes equipped with high quality Fuji O-ring guides that offers smoother casting, reduced wear and tear of fishing lines, and they can handle super lines. Fuji O-ring guides are also tough and great value for money. 17

Performance

To test its performance we took the Bassfield to a barramundi pond in Jugra, Selangor. Here we cast 1 inch long soft baits with jigheads doing some ultra light fishing. With our ultra light Bassfield rod, the barramundis here were given a fair fighting chance.

Casting

Casting light weight baits with the Bassfield is easy as it has a softer tip (Ultra Light model). Accuracy of cast is quite good but not spot on, landing the baits near the intended spots. There was wind too another factor to consider but generally it did good. 19

Fish Management

When it comes to fighting the fish the Bassfield was very forgiving. It allows the fish to run until a certain section before power kicks in. This adds to the fun factor of the rod especially on ultra light tackle. The Bassfield certainly is a capable fighter.

Summary

The Abu Garcia Bassfield looks elegant, is comfortable to fish with, is light weight, and it performs well. Casting distances are good even when casting light 1 inch grubs on jig head. It certainly is a capable fighter that gives enough room for fun before turning on the power. Good rod indeed. 21

Abu Garcia Gambit Wild Jester Review

he Abu Garcia Gambit Wild Jester is part of the economically priced Abu Garcia Gambit series of rods available in the South East Asian Market. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve used it and it has performed well for multiple species of fish ranging from snakeheads to tarpons. It is great for smaller fish yet it is very much capable of handling and landing larger sized fish.

The Wild Jester is a 2 piece rod and is 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;3â&#x20AC;? in length. It is a medium light rod with moderate fast action, and a poundage of 8-17lbs. The Wild Jester is designed for technical fishing with soft plastics, minnows and topwater lures. Personally I call it the Peacock Bass rod because the techniques this rod can cover are great for Peacock Bass. The Wild Jester has a 24 Ton graphite blank, split rear EVA grips and standard guides. 31

In terms of performance the moderate fast tip makes it a great rod for technical casts. One of my favourite things to do with the Wild Jester is to skip soft plastics. The moderate fast tip aided casts and skip casts while the backbone excelled in making hooksets. It is a great rod for soft plastic fishing. Being the soft plastic addict I am, I used it for soft plastics 80 percent of the time. I had no trouble picking up subtle bites with the Wild Jester. Bite detection was excellent on different types of line (monofilament & braided line)

Even though soft plastics are extremely fun I still enjoyed fishing with minnows and topwater lures with the Wild Jester. This handsome Mayan Cichlid was taken on the ORCraft Code Minnow by probing a steep drop off. Letting the minnow sink and slowly jerking it produced an aggressive strike. A Giant Snakehead also decided to scoop the minnow but with a loose drag it shot into thick weeds before I could react.

Working topwater lures such as poppers and pencils are also a breeze with the Wild Jester. The length of 6â&#x20AC;&#x2122;3â&#x20AC;? was not a problem for making long casts with lures ranging from 3g-15g.The moderate fast tip just made the job of working the lures effortless and fun.

The Wild Jester feels light in the hand and casting with it all day is no problem. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any issues of fatigued arms after a whole day of fishing with it. Fighting fish with it was no problem too as the backbone performed consistently each time a fish was hooked up.

There were a few occasions where I pushed the Wild Jester way beyond its limit but it has held up very well for the past one year. It is an economic rod that functions well for its purpose and it is a rod that will last long. The Wild Jester is certainly the rod you need if you are looking for an economically priced rod that can handle a variety of techniques and fishes. Tight lines and happy fishing

ecoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead is a softbait anglers dream come true especially since it is weedless. It comes with a super sharp hook (I actually got hook accidentally not once, not twice, but three times) that easily latches on to skin (penetrates easily), finger nails, plastic spoons, wood, etc. 39

Saltwater Torture

First we wanted to see how it will do in saltwater. We placed one in a container of saltwater for over 24 hours. After over 24 hours we removed the jighead for inspection and found no rust. We ran it through a plastic spoon and it caught on confirming that it still remains sharp. 41

Field Test

To test the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead we took some lighter action tackle (since the jighead is for finesse fishing) and headed to some barramundi ponds. Since these ponds are known to have specimens from about 700 grams to about 2kg, I think the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 can handle them. 43

Good Fit

I decided to use my old trusty Abu Garcia Revo Premier reel with the new Abu Garcia Bass Beat II rod rated light; for this test. For bait I used my all time favourite Berkley Powerbait 1 inch grub. For test I used the Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 size 3 weighing 2.5 grams that fits the grub well.

Hook Strength

We hit a lot of fish and the hook penetrated the fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lips easily. We lost quite a few fishes too as they managed to throw the hook. Increasing the drag pressure helped improve the landing rate. We also lost a few good size fishes due to the hook opening up. We had to turn the fish away from the water wheel and the added pressure caused the hook to open. 45

Verdict

The Decoy Plus Guard VJ-75 jighead does what it is designed to do well. It is super sharp penetrating the fishes lips easily. It is weedless of which is great especially when fishing for fishes that hideout in weedy areas. Step past its limits and it opens up of which is good and bad. Bad because you lose a fish. Good because it is easy to pull free when snagged. Bend the hook back in shape and continue fishing. 47

bu Garcia has a rod that is branded, well it is an Abu Garcia rod. But the good news is that it does not cost a bomb. It does not even cost a tiny bomb. It is certainly pocket safe and may cause some â&#x20AC;&#x153;accidentalâ&#x20AC;? purchases.

Looks Wise

Some big brands tend to undermine the looks of their lower budget level products giving them the â&#x20AC;&#x153;lower budgetâ&#x20AC;? looks, but Abu Garcia has certainly not done that. In fact they made the new BlackMax look good. It looks sporty and smart.

How Does It Feel?

The BlackMax rod is one of those rods that you would pick up, give it a feel, subconsciously price, and then take a look at the price tag and go; “what the @*#*?” “I am buying it.” While it does not feel like a high-end rod it certainly does not feel “cheap.” It feels like a solid performer; full of power. It is one of those rods that many will find an excuse to buy.

No Frills Rod

How Abu Garcia made an affordable yet high performance rod is by using a good core and shaving the cost off the others. The BlackMax rod comes with a good 24 ton graphite blank that has lots of power and good backbone. They shaved on the components. They use non branded high quality stainless guides with Titanium oxide inserts (rings) and graphite reel seats.

This allows one to take oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time should one feel a need to mod the rod exchanging the components for branded ones say by Fuji. With a good core one has the option to build on it.

The BlackMax rod is a good caster especially on weightier baits. We get very good casting distances. It is when the monsters take the bait the BlackMax truly shines. It has lots of recoil power managing every fight really well. It has power to turn the heads of the monsters we were fighting without any loss of power; an attribute of a good strong backbone.

Verdict

While the Abu Garcia BlackMax may be priced at the lower end of its range, it certainly feels like a higher end rod. It fights very well and it exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a drop in power after bending past a certain level but the BlackMax held its head up and fought on. Very good value for the price.

Ichikawa B.S.P Hooks For Soft Plastic, Swimbaits, Buzz Frogs, & Soft Jerkbaits

f you are an angler that fish a lot of soft baits, swimbaits, etc. do checkout the Ichikawa B.S.P hooks. These offset designed hooks are great for these type of fishing. They come with a longeyed offset area that reduces tearing of soft plastic baits. 73

These hooks hold the soft plastic baits in place when casting holding them is position. With the hook point hidden within the soft plastic baits, the baits become weedless. Fishing for Trout in

New Zealand

f you’re planning a trip to New Zealand to fish for those elusive brown and rainbow trout, you’ll want to know a little about where you’re heading. Remember that the Down Under summer is the reverse of the northern hemisphere, with warm balmy days from October to April in the north of the country and November to March in the south. It’s also the main fly fishing season.

New Zealand is a beautiful country. Tucked away in the bottom left corner of the South Pacific, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a long way from anywhere except Australia. And even then, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a three hour plane ride across the Tasman Sea from Sydney to Auckland. With two main islands, imaginatively called the North and South Islands, the country spans 1000 kilometres of latitude, with the resulting differences of climate and topography that arise from that.

The North Island is essentially volcanic, and the trout-bearing rivers and lakes generally run from the higher altitudes of the Central Plateau out towards the coast, or into one of the central lakes. Studded with three beautiful high mountains, Ruapehu, Ngaruahoe and Tongariro, and many deep lakes including Rotorua and Taupo, the Central North Island is steeped in Maori history and broken by fast-moving rivers. The Tongariro River is one of these, a rather challenging river that has drawn fly-fishermen since the introduction of trout over 120 years ago. 107

The South Island, on the other hand, has been wrenched from the earth by huge seismic upthrusts and earthquakes. Its landscape is spectacular, dropping from the high peaks of the Southern Alps to the wide coastal plains of the east coast and the wild ocean beaches of the west coast. You can stand on a wave-torn, rocky west coast beach and look inland to high snow-capped mountains, with several glaciers in between. Once again, clear rocky rivers tumble down through deep gorges and across stony valleys, providing countless opportunities for excellent wild trout fishing. Main international gateway cities from Asia are Auckland, in the North Island, and Christchurch in the South Island. International flights also arrive into Wellington from Australia, and Queenstown in the south, giving access to the fabulous fishing around Southland and inland Otago. This is also very handy in ski season. Major roads are good to drive, although drive times can be deceptively slow because of the rugged terrain, particularly in parts of the South Island. Driving is on the left side of the road.

The main trout fishing areas in the North Island are around Taupo and Rotorua, and further out towards the East Coast and Hawkes Bay. The greater Nelson region at the top of the South Island is a key brown trout fishing area, and there is also excellent fishing further south through Canterbury, the West Coast, Otago and Southland. All these places are well-served with top local fishing guides, and there are beautiful luxury lodges hidden in remote locations so you can stay and fish in quiet splendour. Three, four and five star options provide something for every budget.

The trout fishing season runs from October to April throughout most of New Zealand, but there are many areas in the North Island where an open season runs all year in the lower reaches of the rivers. This makes places like Taupo and Rotorua, in the central North Island, particularly good places to fish in winter.

Trout fishing is generally catch and release, and the clear waters of most New Zealand rivers make for some of the best sighted river fishing for brown and rainbow trout in the world. here are many baits that can be used for bottom fishing and in this issue we take a look at live baits. Live baits are simply baits that are alive. They are especially good baits for predator fish that prefer chasing down and hunting for food and /or prey..

Types Of Live Bait

There are many types of live baits that have proven to catch fish. some of them are shrimps, prawns, leeches, fish, squid, and worms. All these live baits have their place in fishing and have caught plenty of fish in both saltwater and freshwater environments. Worms are perhaps one of the most famous baits. I started fishing using earthworms (first use of live baits) fishing for tilapia at a pond and we caught lots of tilapia. Of course they catch all sorts of other fishes too like certain species of gourami, carp, as well as saltwater fishes (using bloodworms). 119

Fish

Live fish are perhaps the live bait that I currently used the most especially when I am on a sailfish fishing trip. My favourite baits include Indian mackerel, bigeye scad, and yellow eye scad. To use them successfully these baits will have to be healthy and swimming.

Hook Hook

Hook

To ensure that your baitfish stays alive and is swimming, make sure that the hook used is hooked in places that will not kill the fish. Good places to place a hook through are at the top near the dorsal fin, at the tail after the caudal fin, and the nostrils. Ensure not to injure the lateral line of the fish.

Of course baitfish can be used in freshwater too. Catfish is a good bait for giant snakeheads while scissor tails are great for catching brown snakeheads, peacock bass, cichlids, etc. Palm size tilapia makes great bait for many types of fishes especially the Amazone red tail catfish.

Prawns / Shrimps Prawns are great for bottom feeders that feed on the seabed. Fishes such as snappers and groupers take them. They also catch other fishes such as barramundis, drums, etc. Like fish baits, prawns must be alive and kicking in the water. Insert hook at the segment nearest to its telson (tail) avoiding the gut. Shrimps or small prawns are great bait for freshwater species such as feather backs, catfish, goby, and a host of other fishes. When using live shrimps follow the same principle that is to avoid the telson. Of course this goes for bigger shrimps and thinner hooks.

Live squids are great baits for a variety saltwater fishes such as sailfish. They are hardy baits to use. As the idea of using live baits is that the baits must ideally be alive and well. For squid, just insert a hook at the top part (sharp area) of the mantle. If it is too long, another hook can be placed at a lower section of the mantle. 125

These here are some examples of live baits that are used for bottom fishing. There are lots more baits that can be used like lizards, crickets, etc. Anyway, do give live baits a try on your next fishing trip.

Completely Interesting:

A secluded artsy and nicely styled abode

^Welcome to The Kabin.

ver wanted to stay in a hotel or a resort that is completely out of the norm? Brick and mortar buildings, as well as wood; have been the norm for hotels and resorts for many years. Not long ago we started seeing hotels and resorts being made of other things such as cargo containers used normally for shipping. The Kabin in Kuala Selangor is one such place. 129

Out Of The Norm

Although using containers as rooms for people to sleep in is nothing new, it is not often that hotels, resorts, or even inns use them. The first one stayed in was at a place in Perak where I used to go fishing at. But when it comes to making container hotels look good and stylish; The Kabin has certainly succeeded.

Good Sense

Building hotels and resorts is not a cheap endeavour, but using refurbished shipping containers certainly brings the cost down. There is more. It make sense too. Think about the environment. What happens to old shipping containers? They get discarded, left to rot somewhere not seen by many. What a waste.

Refurbishing and repurposing them is one way that is both good for business and for the environment. The Kabin has done just so creating a lovely, artsy, looking abode for travellers who want to experience a different type of accommodation.

Looks Good

The Kabin does look good. While shipping containers may not look all that big on the outside, I was surprised to see that our container or â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kabinâ&#x20AC;? actually fitted four persons quite comfortably. Yes, the walking spaces may be a little small but overall it is comfortable. We had four single beds, shelves, drawers, etc. Oh yes, there is also a built-in toilet. 133

The Kabin does have a swimming pool. Wait, two pools of which are lovely places to relax especially when the sun is hot. There is a wading pool for kids and a large pool for adults. It may not be an Olympic size pool but is certainly is big enough to do a few good laps. 135

Cafe Worried about what to eat? worry not. The Kabin does have its own cafe where one can have sandwiches, ice cream, cold drinks, coffee and tea, etc. They can also do barbeque with advanced notice. There are places to eat nearby should one not feel like dining at the resort.

Other Facilities For those who like to sing The Kabin does have a karaoke room that will allow singers & “singers” to exercise their vocal “muscles.” There are also meeting and function rooms, bicycles for rent, games room, and stand up paddling boards and kayaks.

Book A Stay?

Should you be fishing off Kuala Selangor or visiting the attractions around the area such as Malawati Hill (historical fort), fire fly watching, eagle watching, photography, a visit to Sky Mirror, etc. The Kabin certainly is a place to consider staying at. Oh, for anglers, there is a beach that is walking distance from The Kabin. One thing to note though is that the container rooms (being made of metal) get really hot in the afternoon. They take a long time to cool down even with the airconditioning running full blast. 137

uman beings are creatures of habit. We tend to eat at the few places that we like eating at and before you know it, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re there almost every day. I have a few eating places that I go to on a rotation basis but then again it is habitual for me to do so. Sometimes it is good to break out of that loop and go dine somewhere else. We decided to go to the Cyberview Resort And Spa. 141

A Preview Of Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s To Come

At the Cyberview Resort And Spa we attended a dinner, not just any dinner but a preview dinner of what would be served during the month of Ramadan for iftar. As we made our way towards the restaurant I could smell satay and meat being barbequed. That kicked started my digestive system and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t long before a gear shift took place seeing me speeding towards the buffet.

A Dizzying Array

Seeing the array of food being offered, I immediately noticed one issue. There are lots of food but I only have one stomach with limited capacity. You see, Chef Imran and his team prepared 222 food items for the dinner (of which will also be offered during the month of Ramadan). That is a lot of food to savour.

Food Adventure

I started my food journey with sushi before making my way to the various curries, and then took a break right after satay. The food was delicious. I wanted to go for a second round of gulai kawah but decided to hold back (it took a lot of will power) as there are more to savour.

^ Yummy grilled lamb.

After the short break I headed for the barbeque and filled up on charcoal grilled lamb and prawns. Whilst eating my delightful pieces of lamb a friend brought some icecream over and pointed out that this is a “must try.” My brains short circuited. Before finishing my main course, I attacked the ice-cream counter. Who wouldn’t when the ice-cream is rendang chicken flavoured.

Yes, you read this right. At first I too thought that I heard it wrong. I asked again what the flavour was and again I was told “rendang chicken ice-cream.” This ice-cream is a little spicy with tiny bits of chicken meat marinated with rendang, in it. The first scoop was the “getting used to” while the second scoop was where I enjoyed it. 147

More Main Courses

^ Indian cuisine.

I was already somewhat full by now but I just had to go on one more round of food adventuring. I wanted to go for more satay but then I saw fried kuay teow (a broader flat type of rice noodles). I weighed my options since I need room for dessert; and fried kuay teow won the bid.

The fried kuay teow tasted really good. It was cooked just nice. Not too salty but really tasty. A bit spicy but not too much. what I love about fried kuay teow is the cockles. Without them no fried kuay teow is worth eating. I enjoyed every strand of it despite feeling full.

With so many delightful desserts tempting my sweet tooth I had no choice but to go on. I enjoyed lovely durian rolls (durian is my favourite fruit) which was really good. I enjoyed various palm dates (I love dates) . I had a few slices of cakes and tarts too. I love the strawberry tarts, crĂ¨me Brulee, but the one I liked best is the blueberry cheese cake... or is it the tiramisu cake... both.

There are so much more food that I have not tried. Well, every stomach has a limit. I had to stop or risk humiliation being wheeled out in a wheelbarrow. It is impossible to lose weight with such delicious meals on offer. I am certain that I have gained a few kilos after this meal but it was all worth it. When time comes Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll hit the gym.
