My fellow anglers and friends, Greetings to all and welcome to YEAR 2016. Welcome to the January 2016 issue of The Asian Angler magazine. Well, we tested a few lures; the OC Craft Code and Classic Bluewater Lures with good success. We’ve also played with some new reels, rods, bags, etc. and in this issue we share with you the good stuffs and left out those that didn’t make the cut. There are also new product launches by Pflueger and ZCraft Muso Jigs. Pflueger recently launched the all new Pflueger Supreme XT reel of which looks good and feels good too. o, you want to drive through the woods fast and get to your friends at you secret fishing hole somewhere in the forest. Forget the pickup truck. A horse would have done better. Take the rally ready Volkswagen Golf GTi instead. Oh... ok. My bad. This is not a car magazine.

30 Ton Graphite

What I am getting at is this; while it may be fine and dandy to bring the old favourite tough looking, thick, muscular, but floppy fibreglass rod to battle the 10kg plus giant snakeheads (toman), a 30 ton carbon graphite rod will do much better as it is stiffer with better rebound power. One of them is the Abu Garcia Veracity Pro. 11

Sinister In Red

The Veracity Pro comes in red. Not just any normal kind of red. It comes in blood red. It looks like a long vial of blood, perhaps making in the perfect rod for vampires. For those of you who faint at the sight of blood, this rod may very well be your kryptonite.

American Design

Jokes aside, the Veracity Pro looks good. Not to flashy. Not too much bling. Just nice in my opinion. It comes with good quality EVA grips, black metal (not a music genre) butt end cap, blood red painted reel seat, with black and silver thread windings. 13

Quality Components

Completing the package are high quality components from Fuji. They include Fujiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tangle free guide system of which allows for better casting distances and provides less friction between line and guides thus reducing line wear.

Fuji Reel Seat

Another important component is the reel seat. The Veracity Pro comes fitted with Fuji reel seat that holds the reel securely in place. If you have encountered reels going loose mid way through a fight with a big fish you will understand the need for a high quality reel seat. 15

Back at our lab we put the Veracity Pro through the pressure test with 20lb being the target. Securing the line to an anchor, we pulled the rod backwards keeping the angle at about 45 degrees, tightening the drag, reeling in line, and pulling again until we thing got scary. The rod touched 20.7lb.

Test Thus Far

Thus far the Veracity Pro has proven to hit the marks. It does come with good quality Fuji components, it looks sinisterly nice, and it has decent power. However, we were unable to have it tested in the field for now. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll stay tuned for part 2 in the next issue. 17

hen it comes to catching fish, the lure you use and how you use it is important. You may have good rods, super smooth reels, tough and almost invisible lines, and your fish finder is beeping like a cheap broken car alarm; but without a good lure, your chances of catching any fish would be really low.

Replicating Good Lures

Good lures catch fish and it is no secret that they get replicated. Makes sense right? Who on earth would want to replicate a lure that does not catch fish? Thus comes the OR Craft Code lures. The OR Craft Code lures are a replica of the M Blue Code lures (or could it be M Blues Code). 21

Nice Swimmer

With a few Code lures in our hands we decided to take them swimming at a nearby pond. Using light tackle we got the code flying out to very good distances. They cast easy and well. They swim really well to with a tight wiggle.

Would Fish Eat Them?

We may like the way it swims but what about the fish? Twitching them just outside some underwater weeds did the trick. Pissed of peacock bass had a field day hitting the Code. Or was it the Code having a field day taking hits from the peacock bass... Hmm, whatever. The code still won. 23

he Classic Bluewater F120 lures were launched last month here in Malaysia. These Australian lures are made for saltwater fishing being famed straight swimming high speed trolling lures. Yippee! since it is a proven saltwater lure we decided to take it out of its environment.

Well Built

The Classic Bluewater F120 lures are well built with good cosmetics. The body is heavy walled and they are double welded together for extra strength. They are fitted with a one piece through wire frame for better integrity.

Quality Components

The Classic Bluewater F120 lures are fitted with 3X strong Permasteel treble hooks by VMC. These hooks ensure durability and the much needed strength especially since it is a saltwater trolling lure of which is targeted to catch hard fighting fishes. They also come with Superflex HD Stainless steel split rings.

Field Test

Since it was monsoon we decided to test it with freshwater predators. These lures are made for trolling and thus they do not score high points for casting. However, they swim really well holding tight and straight. Yes, they catch fish too.

New Pflueger Supreme XT

hen it comes to Pflueger, I feel that if a reel manufacturer were to make a reel lighter than theirs, they get pissed off and get down to making another lighter reel in the said reel class. Here comes the new Pflueger Supreme XT and it is the lightest reel in its class.

Good Looking

The new Supreme XT is certainly a good looking reel. It comes in a dark grey body and rotor that looks somewhat metallic. Maybe it is. My eyesight has wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t what it was. It also has gun metal chromed rotor covers on its rotor, and areas of the body. 83

Nice Orange Lining

The spool comes ported and has nice looking metallic orange lining that gives it a somewhat futuristic look. The spool is also braid ready which means that backing line need not be used with braided lines. The spool comes with three rubber linings that allows braided lines to be held in place.

Lovely Handle

The handle comes with a sporty carbon fibre shaft that looks good and saves on weight. The handle itself is EVA supported by metallic orange washer and screw cover. While the design may not be new it still looks good especially with the metallic orange lining and gun metal colours. 85

The magnesium body of the new Supreme XT is rigid especially at the reel foot area. No one likes a reel that flexes during the battle with a brute. rankbaits come either with a bill of which is also called a lip, or they come without one. In this article we will discuss about the bill or the lip of which plays a very significant role in the action if the lure..

Manipulating Hydrodynam ic

One of the reasons for lures to have a bill is to use the resistance of water to manipulate the lureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions. Imagine standing in a pool and with your palm open and fingers close, push the water with your hands. At certain angles the resistance become either lighter or higher. This helps manipulate the lureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s actions. 93

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll notice that lures come with bills of various sizes. Some a big almost half the size of the lure and some are smaller. The bigger the surface of the bill the higher the resistance to water. Why the difference in sizes? When the lure is being cranked, a downward force is created. This force brings the lure down (called dive). The bigger the bill the deeper the dive.

Another thing you will notice is that certain lures come with the bill set at a different angle. Some are set horizontal to the lure. Some are set somewhat at a 45 degrees angle. and some are about 90 degrees. Changing the angle affects the direction of which the downward force comes from. This in turn helps with stabilizing the lure, and gives the desired action. 95

These bills come in various shapes. However, in general there are two main shapes and they are the round bill and the square bill.

d e d n Rous Bill

One of the more common bill shapes is the rounded bill. They have a larger surface and a thus a higher down force. They are mainly used with deep diving lures. These lures scrap the bottom creating commotion and thus gets a whacked by a pissed off predator. There are also round bills for shallow swimming lures. 97

Square Bills

Another type of bill is the square bill. Square bills have a smaller surface and they normally run shallow. Square bills are good at deflecting snags but this does not mean that it is snag free. When they hit a snag they sort of bounce off it or get deflected off it.

Other Shapes

Other bills are the coffin bill. While Square bills have 2 edges, coffin bills have 4 edges resembling coffins used by vampires as shown in vampire movies. They work pretty much the same as square bills. And there is the triangular bill which allows the lure to be fished slowly somewhat like smaller round bills. 99

hen it comes to hooks the choices are a plenty and can get quite confusing. Hooks come in various forms or types for a host of different purposes. With this issue let us take a look at some of the types of hooks that are used with soft baits.

Worm hook

Unlike what the name suggests, worm hooks are not really made to hook real worms. You could but they are designed to rig soft plastic worm baits. They can also be used to rig soft plastic fish such as minnows that are slim but still mainly used for worms.

The shank of the worm hook is bent somewhat like the hand crank of a car jack. They are bent that way to rig soft plastic worms properly without deforming the them.

This is done by inserting the hook into the soft plastic worm somewhat the length of the shank before the first bent of which is right after the eye of the hook. The hook exits the bottom front of the worm and is reinserted into the worm again at the body section the length of the hook shank.

The soft plastic worms and worm hooks are used in quite a few types of rigs such as Texas Rig, Tex-posed Rig (with hook point exposed), and Carolina Rig.

The design of the general soft bait hooks or Carolina Rig hooks are somewhat like the worm hooks with the bent sank of which looks like the hand crank of a car jack. The difference between the general soft bait hooks and worm hooks is that the width of the gap. The gap of the general soft bait hooks is wider.

The shank of the general soft bait hook is rounded after the bent section at the eye of the hook. The shank then curves into the bent and goes all the way to the point. Due to the rounded or curved shank the gap between the hook point and the shank is wider.

The general soft bait hooks are used for all sorts of soft baits from worms to fishes to frogs, etc. The way of using them is similar to that of the worm hook but they can be used to rig up thicker soft baits. The soft baits are usually rigged weedless.

Fishing is a very healthy sport.

As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc. There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life. With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a section of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

ello everyone!

Time really flies. In the blink of an eye, the end of 2015 comes and 2016 arrives. 2015 has been great for me. I broke my personal Striped Snakehead record 3 times this year. Here is my second personal record snakehead that took the 2.4â&#x20AC;? Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad.

It took me around 20 minutes to fool this fish with multiple lures. After switching to the Slinky Shad, it was finally fooled and landed. This fish was hanging around the same area for about 2 weeks. As the monsoon season iss beginning, snakeheads will start to hang in grass for breeding. 125

This juvenile snakehead was caught on a rubber frog. Just a few minutes earlier I lost a bigger one because I did not pay attention to my frog. Paying attention to your frog is important when fishing with rubber frogs to ensure perfect hookset.

Here is my younger brother with a solid snakehead on the Zman MinnowZ in space guppy. The flakes really work well for snakeheads especially when it is sunny. From our experimenting we have found out that lures with flakes tend to get more bites as compared to lures without flakes. 127

Here is my youngest brother with a juvenile Striped Snakehead on a 2â&#x20AC;? black Berkley Powergrub. We searched for snakeheads by observing scattering groups of baitfish and concentrating casts in areas where baitfish congregate.

Here is a snakehead caught by my younger brother on the Zman MinnowZ. Notice the emerald blue ventral fins. The colours of the snakeheads are beautiful now as it is their breeding season. 129

The Berkley Powerbait T-Tail Minnow rigged on an under spin worked well to fool this little snakehead and a few more that managed to shake the hook. The blade adds flash and vibration, perfect to get snakeheads to bite when conditions are tough.

Here is my latest personal record snakehead at 46cm and 780 grams. It gave a powerful fight but I managed to counter it with the Surecatch D-Legend rod and the new Abu Garcia Promax 3.The Promax 3 handled long casts and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high ratio helped to get the fish out of cover quickly. 131

Released to grow and I hope I will be able to catch it again. 2015 has been an awesome year. I have achieved most of my goals, except catching a Peacock Bass. I am also happy to see more junior anglers on social media. I know that there are many more junior anglers out there. If you are a junior angler, keep up the good work, never give up and always remember, safety first.
