Things are getting more exciting with improvements in technology bringing in better and lighter materials transforming fishing tools into lighter, stronger, arsenals. e like sporty things, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t we? When it comes to cars many would love to own a Ferrari or one of these exotics. When it comes to bicycles, sporty designed carbon fibre frames are preferred to mere alloys. The list goes on. For fishing rods the Abu Garcia Bass Beat II fits the ranks of the sporty exotics.

Lightweight Sportiness

The Abu Garcia Bass Beat II is a lightweight carbon graphite rod that is well balanced adorned with carbon fibre wrap on the brand and identity section with a golden lining on black thread at the guide windings giving it a subtle hint of class or luxury in a cloud of sportiness.

It comes fitted with high quality EVA handles with a small section fitted with synthetic rubber cork. The rear EVA ends with a rubber end cap which is what I prefer in rods as they are easier to clean, allows the rod to stand easily, etc. The nut of the reel seat is adorned with carbon fibre further extending the sportiness of the Bass Beat II. 13

High Quality Components

The Bass Beat II comes with high quality components by Fuji. This not only makes the rod lighter. It also offers smoother casts giving better distances. Using high quality components does help psychologically too giving the angler extra confidence when fishing.

Casting Abilities

If you think that the Japanese design, carbon fibre, and gold lines are impressive; try fishing with it. Of course I did just that casting for barramundis at a barramundi pond, casting 1 inch grubs with jigheads as heavy as 1.8 grams to 7 grams. If you are wondering how it did, it did really well casting the 7grams in the wind. 1.8 grams is tough but still managed to. 15

Feel Em All

The Bass Beat II is like a telegraph machine sending information to the userâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands. It is a sensitive rod allowing one to feel everything at the bottom such as the terrain, structures, and of course a fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bite.

Power In Your Hands

Overkill is the word especially in these ponds. The Bass Beat II that I used has a softer springy tip which is great for casting and a strong backbone at about 70% of the rod giving lots of reflex power when battling the brutes. Push it further and it reciprocates. I love how it handles the fight. 17

bu Garcia will soon be launching a rod that is branded, well it is an Abu Garcia rod. But the good news is that it will not cost a bomb. It will not even cost a tiny bomb. It is certainly pocket safe and may cause some â&#x20AC;&#x153;accidentalâ&#x20AC;? purchases.

Looks Wise

Some big brands tend to undermine the looks of their lower budget level products giving them the â&#x20AC;&#x153;lower budgetâ&#x20AC;? looks, but Abu Garcia has certainly not done that. In fact they made the new BlackMax look good. It looks like a sporty and smart.

How Does It Feel?

The BlackMax rod is one of those rods that you would pick up, give it a feel, subconsciously price, and then take a look at the price tag and go; “what the @*#*?” “I am buying it.” While it does not feel like a high-end rod it certainly does not feel “cheap.” It feels like a solid performer; full of power. It is one of those rods that many will find an excuse to buy.

No Frills Rod

How Abu Garcia made an affordable yet high performance rod is by using a core and shaving the cost off the others. The BlackMax rod comes with a good 24 ton graphite blank that has lots of power and good backbone. They shaved on the components. They use non branded high quality stainless guides with Titanium oxide inserts (rings) and graphite reel seats.

This allows one to take oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time should one feel a need to mod the rod exchanging the components for branded ones say by Fuji. With a good core one has the option to build on it.

The BlackMax rod is a good caster especially on weightier baits. We get very good casting distances. It is when the monsters take the bait the BlackMax truly shines. It has lots of recoil power managing every fight really well. It has power to turn the heads of the monsters we were fighting without any loss of power; an attribute of a good strong backbone.

Verdict

While the Abu Garcia BlackMax may be priced at the lower end of its range, it certainly feels like a higher end rod. It fights very well and it exceeded my expectations. I was expecting a drop in power after bending past a certain level but the BlackMax held its head up and fought on. Very good value for the price.

he new Abu Garcia Revo baitcasting reels have gone through some weight and size reduction processes, a bit of magic no doubt that gave made them really amazing reels to use. The ALX is one of these reels.

Looks Wise

Personally I find the Revo ALX to be a cute looking sporty reel with fiercer sharp lines that gives adds to its smaller look. It is actually smaller than the older Revo baitcasters but the design gives it an even more smaller and slimmer look.

I know, I used the word cute, and cute can go both ways. I meant it in the good way; the Lotus Elise kind of cute. The ALX is cute but no less a serious contender. Give me the Lotus Evora or the smaller Elise, I am still going to have some serious fun. 41

How Does It Feel?

Being a smaller reel, it sits snugly in the hands. Personally I feel that the grip is better. It feels like a reel tailor made for me. It also fits really well especially with lighter rods. I am not sure if this is a psychological effect, but fishing with it I felt that it offers better sensitivity and confidence.

Performance

The ALX is a performer, casting really well giving good distances, spool control is easy, and it comes with a max drag of 17lb. Not bad at all considering my other favourite reel being the Revo MGX (older one) of which is bigger, but with a max drag of only 12lb. >The ALX comes with a magnetic brake system. 43

Drag Test

At our lab we pushed the ALX to the max and it went over 17lb. and it still ran smooth. We pushed it up higher and It touched 20.5lb. while still running smooth. We could still squeeze out some drag but we were already at about 95% (I would say) and decided to stop. An impressive small performer.

Taking on the pressure in a lab is one thing. Taking on the giants is another. To see how it would perform in the real world we took the ALX to our test pond where monsters lurk. Casting the ALX is super easy. Spool control is easy too. We got good distance casting out our baits.

The ALX managed every fight well having enough drag and power to battle the fishes turning them from the stilts where they tend to dash towards for protection. The ALX landed all fishes that took the bait and these fishes include good size Asian red tail catfish and a Amazonian red tails catfish. >The ALX, small yet powerful. 47

Verdict

I am impressed with the power this little reel has to offer. The Abu Garcia Revo ALX is lightweight, smaller in size as compared to the older Revos, and it performs well with enough drag strength to handle the fights. It feels great in the hands (fits my hands well) and I like it.

he Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 jighead is a jighead done with a lot of thinking put in by experienced anglers, I believe. As a soft bait angler, I liked the design the very first time I laid eyes on it. It has a bait holder and an additional ring to add stuffs to; stuffs such as a spinner. 59

Super Sharp

As with most of the Decoy hooks that we have tested for light tackle or light game fishing as it is called in Japan, the hook of the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 is super sharp. It is so sharp it grabs on to things and if one is not careful, one will get hook very easily. It easily held onto a plastic spoon during the sharpness test.

Saltwater Torture

The Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 is rated as a saltwater hook. To test their claims we put it through the saltwater test for at least 24 hours just to see it will remain sharp as well as if it will rust. So we filled the usual bottles with a saltwater solution and drowned the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53. 61

After a few hours over the 24 hours time period we removed the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 from the saltwater and inspected it for rust. The good news is that no rust can be seen. The not so good news is that it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do well in the second sharpness test which means that it has lost its sharpness.

Field Test

We visited some barramundi ponds and took the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 along with other fishing tackle being tested. On this trip the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 was in a way the hero. Strong winds made casting lighter jigheads difficult. Changing to the Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 gave us very good distance. 63

Managing Fish

Setting the hook is very easy as the hook is sharp. We landed a good amount of fish on a relatively low drag. Increasing the drag pressure made the fight even more fun but we lost a few bigger fishes as the hook bent open. We bent it back in shape and continued our fishing but after a few more bends the hook lost its integrity and became somewhat softer.

Verdict

The Decoy Bottom Drive SV-53 jigheads are good jigheads to use with smallish soft plastics. With a heavier weight it made casting much better in the wind giving good distances. The hook is very sharp making it easy to set the hook but with increased pressure the hook tends to open. It is a good jighead depending on your type of fishing. >Comes with bait holder to hold baits in place.

he Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are made for saltwater light game fishing. These jigheads come with super sharp hooks in sizes that fit small baits such as 1 inch soft plastic baits and they fit really well.

Hold Baits In Place

Having to readjust your soft baits after every three or four casts are a thing of the past. The Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads comes with bait holder that Decoy calls the “Magic Keeper.” The “Magic Keeper” holds baits in place preventing them from moving and coming off the hook.

How Good Are They?

No doubt that the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are good products after all most things made in Japan are good, right? To see how good they really are we tested them. First we drowned one in saltwater solution to test its saltwater capabilities in our 24 hours saltwater test. 69

After over 24 hours we removed the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jighead from the saltwater solution and inspected it thoroughly for rust. We didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see any rust on the hook or the point but there was a little discoloration at the eye.

Second Sharpness Test

After the staying in saltwater for over 24 hours we wanted to see if it still remained as sharp as it was or at least still sharp since saltwater is a corrosive agent. Running the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 on the surface of a plastic spoon proves it sharpness. It easily held on to the spoon. 71

Field Test

To test the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads we headed to some barramundi ponds to put them against the powerful acrobats. Being classed as light saltwater hooks I feel that the barramundis in these ponds will be a suitable challenger.

Handling The Fights

With a super sharp point, penetration into the fishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lip was easy. They held on pretty well too helping us land a good number of fishes. Just to up the fun in our little tug-of-war with the barramundis we cranked up the drag pressure. This time the hook bent open when larger fish took the bait and ran. 73

Verdict

The Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads are super sharp and easily penetrates the lips of the fishes that took the bait. We did lose a few due to the hooks opening up when using higher pressure. With an appropriate setup and drag pressure the Decoy Round Magic SV-52 jigheads work really well.

ishing reels and exotic sports cars have got a few things in common. One of them is weight reduction. They are constantly in a race to shed weight. For sports cars shedding weight means more speed for the same power output. For reels I would think that it is endurance (lighter reel equals less fatigue), better comfort, and appeal. 79

Size Reduction

Some years ago Abu Garcia made bigger versions of the low profile reels. Now they went the other way making smaller versions. The new Abu Garcia Revo series reels are slightly smaller than the usual Abu Garcia low profile baitcasting reels on a side by side comparison. >The reel on the right is the older Revo SX.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Happened Here?

Ahhh, a moment of ingenuity and I believe, additional product development money. New molds costs lots of money. People have ideas all the time and without money these ideas are just that; ideas. Anyhow, Abu Garcia took action on these ideas and designed smaller reels. But why? >The older Revo SX on the right. 81

Size Does Matter

I am not talking dirty here but size really does matter. I have been fishing with Abu Garcia Revo reels for a long time now and I think that they are great. But when I picked up the new Revo baitcasting reels, I felt a difference. Lightness aside. They felt like they were custom made for my hands. >The older Revo on the right.

I took them out to a lake to test and made magic with them. I really mean like... magic. They are the most comfortable reels I have ever cast with. I felt like I was born to cast. BMW once said that their cars are like an extension of the driver’s hands. That’s crap. The new Abu Garcia Revo is like an extension of the caster’s hands. >Fits nicely in the hands. 83

My Thoughts

A slight reduction in size and weight plus some Harry â&#x20AC;&#x153;Porterizationâ&#x20AC;? to the production process brought about a reel that provides for effortless confident casts, easy spool control, and getting very good distances with every cast. Casting good reels has always been fun but with these I am ecstatic and enjoying even more. >Three generations of Revo; oldest in the middle and the latest on the left.

Maintaining Good Looks

Once in a while the big brands dish out something for those with shallower pockets. Like Porsche and their Boxter, or Mercedes-Benz and their 190E back in the day. They still look good after shaving off the costs. The Max rods look good too and they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look at all like low budget rods. The look really decent.

The 3 Models

The Max series rods come in 3 models. They are the BlackMax, SilverMax, and ProMax. All three share similar characteristics and base designs. There are some differences such as the colour schemes, and the reel seat designs. >Pay attention to the reel seat designs. They differ amongst the three Max rods.

This here is one of the important bits. The Max series rods come with a quality 24 ton graphite of which is suitable for our type of fishing. The rods have got very decent backbone power making them good rods to fish with.

This is where the cost have been shaved. These rods come with quality stainless steel guides with Titanium oxide inserts (rings) and graphite reel seats. They are non branded components but they do get the job done.

Should one prefers to invest in branded components such as Fuji, one can opt to change them when the time is right at oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favourite rod builder. Somewhat like buying a car and modding them to increase performance as time goes by and as one feels comfortable with finance wise that is.

Rods As A Whole

As a whole the Max series rods are pretty well balanced, well designed, and they will perform well. Price wise they are indeed friendly. They will certainly get the job done. Such rods especially one with a good base such as the blank that allows one the freedom to upgrade bit by bit according to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s terms.

Part 8

he walk the dog retrieve is a method used with top water lures such as pencil lures and walkers, and is a proven retrieval method for predator fishes such a snakeheads and bass. These days there are lures designed to walk the dog making them easy to manipulate.

How Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Done

First cast out your lure and do nothing for a few seconds (say about 5). This allows the water to settle. Next point your rod tip at the water (about 45 degrees). Ensure that your line is a little slack. Now give it a twitch (about 6 inches) moving your rod tip up and down. You will notice you lure sliding to one side. Give it another twitch and your lure should slide again to the other side. Do this a few times (say about 6 times) in successions and observe the movement of the lure. It should slide in a left to right to left to right... manner. >The Sebile Ghost Walker is a good lure to learn with. 147

Once you have gained confidence, go the whole way. Cast out your lure. Wait for the ripples to settle down. Walk your lure all the way back. Practise makes it easier and soon it will become second nature to you. >Remember, twitch it with a slightly slack line.

What Happens When A Fish Strikes?

The exciting thing about fishing with top water lures is the explosion that happens when a fish strikes the lure. However, sometimes it misses. When this happens continue walking your lure. Chances are that the same fish will hit again.

Magnetic Brakes; Making Sense Of It

agnetic braking systems are nothing new. In fact they have been around for quite some time. They are being used in trains, roller coasters, etc. It actually wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t that recent that the use of magnetic brakes made its way into fishing reels. In fact the magnetic braking systems have been used in reels for a considerably long time.

How Indeed

I have had many interesting conversations about reels with anglers and I have been asked before many a time how do magnetic brakes really work. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s baffling is that the spools of which these magnets seem to have some control over are made of aluminium, a material of which is not affected by magnets. 153

Magic Or...

If the spools are not attracted to magnets, something magical must be happening within the reel. Either that or tackle manufacturers and their R&D engineers have been bullshitting us all along. There is no bullshit nor is there anything magical inside these reels. The engineers actually applied science into their research and development, and after spending large amounts of money, gave us the magnetic braking system.

The Science

I am sure you have played with magnets and are familiar with how magnets work. Think back to a time when you were still in school (this applies to those who are no longer in school), during the science lessons, when you did an experiment about magnetic fields using metal shavings, a board, and a magnet. By placing a magnet under a board of which contains metal shavings on top of the board; the metal shaving suddenly moves and lo and behold forms a design. That design is that of the magnetic field. 155

Electrifying

Move any piece of metal even those not affected by magnets like the aluminium spool close enough to the magnets and it creates a disturbance in the magnetic field. Magnetic fields are produced by moving electric charges. Moving any piece of metal that conducts electricity such as aluminium (although unaffected by magnets), through a magnetic field, produces an electric current across the conductor, in this case the aluminium spool. This creates the disturbance in the magnetic field and this disturbance is called an eddy current (Lenzâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Law).

The magnetic braking system goes to work as the aluminium spool rotates, creating eddy currents through electromagnetic induction of which creates resistance thus having an effect on the aluminium spool. A short and more laymen explanation is that the magnetic braking system uses magnets to create an electrical force that helps control the spool via friction generated by the eddy currents. 157

All magnetic brake systems including that of the Shimano Digital Control Brake System (DC) work using the same principles. Shimano’s DC system is more “techie” in a sense as it uses its own power to operate the system of which is indeed an electromagnetic system. It doesn’t have batteries so what happens is that when you cast and the spool rotates, power is generated (like a dynamo), and that power is used to control the electromagnetic system.

To set the magnetic brakes on most baitcasting reels, simple turn the dial that is located at the side plate of your reel. Turning the dial up to max (maximum) actually moves the magnets closer to the spool while turning the dial to min (minimum) brings the magnets away from the spool. 159

How I started fishing?

n this article we will take a look at how my friends started fishing.

Angler : Mekail Mazlan I started fishing in 2012, I was 12 at then. I started with a pole and a thick line with a hook. My father used the same setup, and he always scores the biggest fish. Sometimes he brings my friends along to fish as well.

I went deeper into fishing when a friend of mine started fishing at the place I currently fish. He taught me about baits and lines and they work! I caught a decent sized catfish. He was using a pole and I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Guess what I did... I took a pretty good stick, put electric tape on the base as a handle, and carved a Shimano logo on it. Then I started reading a lot about fishing â&#x20AC;&#x201C;best lines, rods, reels. We then started fishing together every afternoon. My friend even learned a few things from me!

I like bottom fishing with live bait. I like fishing because it is fun, and you get excited from the anticipation and the surge of adrenaline you get when you hook that big one. You will get to study the way the fishes react too, and the ecosystem they are living in. In the pond I fish, conditions constantly changes. New fishes appear, with different diets. Most do not take bread and dough. 165

My advice to anyone deciding to try out fishing is that it is not enough to fish just once. Keep fishing. If you just give it a shot once, you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really feel it. Find someone who knows how to fish and observe them. Be patient and have fun.

Bring Your Kids Fishing Every child needs to spend time outdoors. Fishing in a safe and educational sport that both your child and you can bond with.. Retro Design

The restaurantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retro design was an eye catcher. I do like things retro and one of the items that caught my eye was a jukebox. I decided to walk in and to take a closer look at the jukebox. The jukebox uses a USB thumb drive. Retro look on a modern music machine. 169

Juicy Tasty Burgers

While I have not tasted many gourmet burgers my authority on burgers is basically nil but I do love to eat and I find the burgers here to be tasty, especially the lamb burger. The taste of the meat is actually quite apparent. Mixed with melted cheese and chopped onions, tomatoes, etc. I really enjoyed the burger and decided on ordering more; smaller size combos. They all tasted good too.

Worth A Visit

Do give Friends Of Burger a try. If you’re a fan of Mc Donald’s you should give them a go. The prices are a little more as compared to those in Mc Donald’s but they taste is a lot better and is certainly worth the extra. Simple tasty burgers worth a visit. 171
