My fellow anglers and friends, Oh! What a month it has been. A month of travel madness, a month I wished had more days, a really crazy month. I know I am not alone when I talk about needing more days, wishing a day had more than the 24 hours granted us, but I believe, truly believe that this is something quite healthy for both person and the economy. This month we did quite a lot of fishing and met up with lots of anglers sharing stories, meals, and fishing tackle. What’s so good about this is that as anglers we get along well despite race, religious believes, and whatever bollocks the powers that be have been spreading during their political crap talk. But if what “toxic” they spew were true, then the sport of fishing is indeed the healer and peace maker for such issues. Well, fishing is indeed a great sport. It not only can bring about peace and frienship, it is also good for one’s health. We tend to spend a lot of time in the office and children these days tend to spend more time indoors playing with electrical gadgets. If you have kids, I highly recommend that you share with them the joys of fishing. It will open up their minds, give them the opportunity to breath clean fresh air, and get some natural vitamin D from the sun. The World Cup 2014 will be starting soon. Football fever will be hitting and soon normally crowded fishing holes will be empty. Here is a good opportunity to do some fishing should you dislike fighting for fishing spots. If you are not a football fan don’t let this slip. Do as much fishing as you can as the next opportunity will only come again in 4 years. Anyway,I shall not distract you too much from your reading. Remember to always enjoy fishing, practise catch, photograph, and release, and share The Asian Angler with your friends. Thank you for your support and tight lines. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Viper Venom Rod By Philemon Foo
ds
Viper Venom With A Vengeance designed By Viper
Viper Venom rods have been proven
to be good rods and well worth the money. Recently I was invited to test them out the new Viper Venom Light Jigging rods around the waters of Pemanggil Island (an island on the east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular).
23
Humble
Good Looker The Viper Venom looks good in a humble way. It is not too over “blinged up” with too many fashionable accessories nor is it too “plain Jane.” It is designed just nice, enough to look good and sway hearts. They come in humble white colored blanks, with gun metal greyish section at where the label and brand sits.
25
Blank Graphite
Mix
The Viper Venom rods use a mixture of 24 ton & 30 ton graphite to give it good absorption qualities of which is needed when a brute of a fish take the jig and makes a sudden dash. A lot of rods with such flexibility tend to lack power but the Viper Venom doesn’t. This is where its 30 ton part takes over.
27
Comfortable
Grip The Viper Venom comes with EVA handles that are compact (probably hypalon) with diameter just enough to give a comfortable grip. The rear handle on the split rear section wears a modest ring giving it a touch of class.
29
SIC K GUIDES & VSS REEL SEAT
The Venom comes with standard SIC K Guides that manages the lines well with the ability to give a smooth enough glide during battles while the ACS reel seat grips the reel in place without movements of which is fantastic especially while jigging.
Different EVA handle configuration. The micro jig model comes with full rear EVA handle.
31
Field Test Out At Sea
For the Viper Venom, we did not have the opportunity to test it at our lab however we put it through the furnace during our field test. It was two full days of jigging light jigs ranging from 18 grams to 20 over grams and I did go all the way up to 60 grams when the currents picked up.
33
Sporting Character
Jigging light jigs out at sea during our field test proved that the Viper Venom is classed well. The one I used is classified PE1-3 with the ability to jig 20 grams to 100 grams jig. While we didn’t need to go all the way to 100 grams, the rod did well keeping me in contact with the jigs throughout.
35
Light & Well Balanced
The Viper Venom is built light like most sporty rods and is well balanced. This lightness allows one to jig the whole day without feeling too tired. Managing the weight of the jig and pressure of the water is one thing, managing the weight of the rod is another. Being lightweight certainly adds points to this rod.
37
Power to Lift The Viper Venom truly comes to live during battles and it is during one of the battles with a brute that the Viper Venom really shone. I was jigging slowly when a brute decided to whack the jig and the rod did a serious bend. It was when I began to pump that I felt the power of the rod flexing its muscles. The blank managed the fight well constantly flexing its muscles to recover from the bend; fighting hard to return to its original stance and in a short time a brute of a queenfish (talang) weighing in at about 7kg was subdued. The power it had outshone its good looks and makes this rod a noble arsenal to have and behold.
39
Verdict A good number of hard fighting fishes were subdued and the new Viper Venom managed every battle well. I am certainly impressed by its performance. This New Viper Venom may look humble but its performance is by no means humble. Performance wise it is indeed a brute.

Penn Conflict Ree Power Redefined By Philemon Foo
el
Penn is well known for its salt-
water fishing rods and reels and recently we had the opportunity to toy around with one of its powerhouse reel, the Penn Conflict. In the world of superheroes, the Penn Conflict will have to be Incredible Hulk.
45
Solid Design The Penn Conflict is not green with purple pants of course but design wise, it speaks solidity, power, and toughness. It even has the bodybuilding barbells “tattooed” on it. It is a reel that throws confidence freely and thus wouldn’t mind a conflict.
47
Thick Muscles Its bail arm wire is thick of which further enhances its muscular stance. More importantly is that it is tough and will take a beating and yet still not bend. Its bail arm is super solid with no flex of which is great during battles.
49
Weight Loss The Penn Conflict is built really tough and solid. Weight would have been an issue and like most reel manufacturers, holes have to be made to reduce its weight. Most holes are made at non vulnerable sections of the reel such as the spool.
51
Big Holes In Spool The Penn Conflict shed weight at its spool too. Penn decided to cut out big holes the shape of its logo’s outline around its non vulnerable part of the spool instead of going with the tiny holes that many brands go with.
53
Matt Black Is In These large holes further enhance the look of power that has been the main focal point of its design. Its body is matt black and it spool is gun metal brown, all colors that are at the opposite spectrum of gentleness. It’s all about toughness, power, and solidness.
55
Smooth Performer When it comes to reels in this category, smoothness tend to be less important. However, the Penn Conflict is a smooth and well balanced reel. There are smoother reels of course if you’re willing to pay the price but for the Conflict, it certainly surpasses general smoothness standards.
57
Lab Test Having the Conflict in hand we just had to put it through a torture test in our lab. We are no gentle lab rats and when we torture, we do our best at putting every reel, rod, hook, etc. through its pace but with controlled commonsense.
59
Powerful & Fast The Conflict comes with powerful gears that felt really solid. One can feel the punch with the turn of the handle. It comes with a commendable gear ratio of 6.2:1 of which is similar to what you get on some of the more expensive reels.
61
Pressure Test (Drag Smoothness)
While the drag is smooth all reel drags have a limit until which they become jerky or sticky, and then they lock up. We tested the size 4000 Conflict of which boasts a max drag of 15lb. We managed to drive it all the way to 16.4lb before it drag smoothness started diminishing.
63
Pressure Test (Max Drag) Further tightening up the drag the Conflict surpassed its claims of 15lb max drag and almost hit 21lb during the pressure test an impressive figure for a size 4000 reel. What also important is that the reel remain intact with nothing giving way.
65
Field Test We tested the Conflict at the Exotic Pond (a commercial fishing pond) to further torture it with the many gladiator brutes that lie in wait for some fishing tackle to destroy. After many fishes the conflict wasn’t even tickled. We then took it to another pond said to have lots of Mekong Catfish. Again no fish stood up to it.
67
Fish Management We then decided to test the Conflict our at sea in Pekan (east coast of the Malaysian Peninsular) and we were fighting brutes in the form of diamond trevallies. The Conflict again proved to be overkill. It is like it didn’t really flex its muscles. Perhaps now you understand why I liken it to the Incredible Hulk.

Verdict The Penn Conflict stood up to every test and made it all look too easy. It is indeed a powerhouse of a reel, the Incredible Hulk of a reel, a reel that seems to just wipe out any gladiators and/or brutes that has taken up the fight. If this is the kind of reel you like, the kind of battle you enjoy, this reel is for you.

Rod Ford Ryojin By Philemon Foo
Something Out Of Gotham
I have wanted to have a go at the Ryo-
jin reel for many months now and the Ryojin reel has since been eluding me until recently I had the opportunity to fish with it and to experience firsthand its performance. I felt like I’ve been handed the keys to the bat mobile.
73
Fantastic Design
When it comes to design, I must say that the Ryojin ticks all my boxes. It is sporty, rebellious, has lots of holes, and is solid matt black. Doesn’t it remind you of the cape crusaders car? The dark knight’s mobile? The one that makes Ferraris look normal? I love the design of the Ryojin.
75
Built Tough The Ryojin doesn’t only look tough. It is built tough. It is solid reel that will not flex under pressure. Its rotor is strong and solid. Under heavy pressure the Ryojin remains cool and calm, probably cooler than a cucumber.
The Ryojin feels like a full metal reel ready to take on any brutes that want to have a go. It is also a reel made for all types of waters of which would basically be freshwater and saltwater, we did our test in saltwater.
77
Smooth Silk Wise Yes, the Ryojin doesn’t just look good. It performs well too. It has a very smooth drag even at higher drag settings that did great in managing the brutal force of a good size queenfish. The brute ran and the drag did its job really well tiring out the fish without any sticky feeling.
79
Drag Of Muscles The Ryojin has a strong drag to take on most brutes. Having a smooth and strong drag is important especially when you have a merciless brute on the other end of the line. Hats off to the Ryojin of which will shame many other reels within its price range
81
Reduced Line Twist One issue with spinning reels is line twist of which happens during retrieve. The Ryojin handled it really well and the lines remained in good form throughout the fishing trip. The smooth bearing of the anti line twist roller I believe performed really well.
83
Cranking Power The Ryojin has good cranking power and the fat power handle knob bears testament to wants inside. The Ryojin can take the torture thanks to both its gears (of which I am guessing by putting one and one together) and its thick main shaft that supports the spool well.
85
Fish Management
This is where the Ryojin shines. The clicker makes a loud enough noise to excite everyone on the boat. With the fish running, the screaming Ryojin just takes the heat (my aching forearms too) and tires the fish out quite speedily. Playing the fish also take less effort thanks to its cranking prowess.
87
Verdict I am not sure how much pressure it can really take as I did not have the opportunity to bring it to our lab to do the necessary tests but from what I have experienced, the Ryojin certainly did very well. If Batman were an angler this will probably be his “bat reel. As for me, I seriously want one.

Abu Garcia Ocean P Jigging Rods By Philemon Foo
Project
Light Jigging Fun
With light jigging picking up speed,
more brands are churning out tackle for this game. Not to be left out, Abu Garcia recently introduced the Abu Garcia Ocean Project Light Jigging rod. We took one back and spent some time with it..
93
Designed With Oceans In Mind
The Ocean Project is designed well. It comes with a dark blank, dark blue, brand section, light blue, specification section, and metallic blue threads of which all depicts the colors of the ocean. It also uses blue/black carbon fibre wrap at its handle section giving it some sportiness.
95
The Magic Of Balancing
The Ocean Project Light Jigging rod is light weight but may not be the lightest light jigging rod around. The designer of the rod used a kind of magic called “the act of balancing to reduce the weight of the rod thus it feels lighter when placed at fishing position of which is parallel to the ground.
97
EVA Handles
The handle on the Ocean Project is EVA with a split rear. The handle that sits right at the back is designed in such a way that when clipped between the arm and chest, the rod does not twist or rotate easily of which makes jigging more comfortable.
99
Offset Jointed
The Ocean Project Light Jigging rod is a butt jointed or what the industry calls offset jointed rod. This allows the blank to curve in an even and nice curve without any uneven or odd looking sections. It also has a thick blank wall which gives it better power and toughness with a bit of a sacrifice in the form of weight.
101
Lab Testing
While it looks good and all, we needed to see if it will be able to meet all specifications specified. To do so we brought it to our torture chambers (lab) to see how it faired.
103
Backbone Power
The Ocean Project Light Jigging rod, although a light jigging rod, contains good amounts of muscles. It has a backbone of up to 70% of the rod blank giving it the needed power to manage most fishes. It is rated PE2.0 with the ability to handle up to 20lb of force.
105
Pressure Testing
With 20lb being the target we put the Ocean Project Light Jigging rod through its pace. Bit by bit we increased the pressure. At about 18lb, cracking noises started appearing and honestly we were somewhat worried. However, we decided to press on and stop the very second the meter touched 20lb. The Ocean Project remained in one piece and it met its 20lb specification quite scarily.
107
Verdict
Well, The Abu Garcia Ocean Project Light Jigging rod looks good, is lightweight, well balanced, and it does what it says it does. It is a good rod but in the current light jigging rod landscape, it certainly faces stiff competition. Note: We took it out to sea but did not catch anything on it. What we learn is it can cast pretty well.

VFOX Magical J By Philemon Foo
Jig
What’s The Fuss About? Light jigging and all the fuss about
it created a new segment in our sport of fishing some years ago and is a fun game to play. With light jigging shifting into higher gears we found ourselves testing jigs as well. One of them is the VFOX Magical Jig.
111
Simple Designs The VFOX Magical Jig comes in simple jig designs and ripped body. They are designed to dive down fast thanks to its slim body design. This is great as we don’t have to wait too long before we start jigging.
113
Looks Like Food What I like most about them is that they are shiny with certain models looking somewhat like anchovies of which are a plus as they (anchovies) make up part of certain predator fish’s diet such as small tuna and juvenile queenfish that took one of my jigs during a feeding frenzy.
115
Luminous Stripes Some models have luminous strips which make them good jigs to use in deeper waters of which I had the benefit of losing two of these jigs to some predator that broke the line. Well, I lost two jigs but at least I know that they work.
117
Catching Fish The VFOX Magical Jig I used managed to catch a few kilogram size groupers and a small diamond trevally of about 2kg. Our tester in Sabah landed a queenfish (Talang) with them too during a fishing competition.
119
Verdict
The VFOX Magical Jig may look simple but they are effective. They dive fast and they can be jigged fast. What’s more important is that they catch fish and they are friendly to the pocket. These jigs are worth a place in your tackle box.

Introducin’
Ofmer Zambug L By Philemon Foo
Lure
When it comes to lures, the good guys at Ofmer realized one thing. They realized that there are many lures in the market and they really need to be good in order to stand out from the other many good lures.
125
Mark Of The Zambug With this in mind Ofmer did two things. First they worked on a really good lure. Next they designed the eyes of the lures to be different than other lures as such you can know that it is an Ofmer lure when you look at the eyes. These provocative eyes are found on the Zambug.
127
Splashing Walker The Zambug lures are top water walkers with a twist. Notice that the front of the lure resembles the front of a popper. No it is not a popper. However, it makes a little splash like what a popper does on every slide. It goes like splash – slide, splash –slide, splash slide...
129
Back Heavy The Zambug lures are back heavy. This makes them easy casting lures reducing line tangles during the flight of the lure (where the line gets caught up in the hooks). This also gives it the best flight position as it is more aerodynamic gliding through the skies back fisrt.
131
Tail Sitting Low Being weighted more at the tail end, the Zambug sits on the surface of the water, stationary, with its tail below. This makes for an attractive meal to some of the tail loving predators that hunt beneath the water’s surface.
133
Specifications The Zambug comes in 10 colors and this first batch will be available in 65cm and weighing 8.4 grams. There may be more variations in the future depending on the Ofmer. But right now we’ve got these varieties to go out and trick some fishes.

VFOX PE Line Dedicated Scissors By Philemon Foo
Designed With Oceans In Mind
More and more anglers are using
braided or PE lines these days and braided lines are not the easiest to cut with normal scissors (although possible with a little more effort) thus we find more scissors and cutters for braided line and this VFOX PE Line Dedicated Scissors is one of them.
137
Bright Colored
The one we were given to test had bright orange handles and black colored blades. Orange handles are great as they are easily seen.
139
Serrated Blades
The VFOX PE Line Dedicated Scissors comes with serrated blades of which makes cutting braided lines or PE lines much easier and neater than normal scissors. The blades are also made of stainless steel giving them better protection from the elements.
141
Holes For Securing...
There are holes strategically placed on the blades as well as the handle. These holes can be use with split rings or snaps of which can then be secured to a cord or something, connecting the scissors to a belt, tackle box, etc. so that it doesn’t go missing during fishing trips.
143
Comfortable Feeling
The handles feel very much like those fond on a pair of good quality scissors. They feel well built allowing the thumb and pointer finger to sit in them snugly. This is great especially when one is on a moving boat and needs to give one’s braided lines a quick nip.
145
Verdict
The VFOX PE Line Dedicated Scissors work really well and is well worth the money. Should you be in the market for a braided line cutting scissors, do consider getting this.

Knowledge Wise Understanding Fishing Rods Part 13 Rod Handles - EVA By Philemon Foo
Last issue we took a look at how fishing
rod handles affect fishing rods as well as a bit on the different types of rod handles. Let us now go deeper into the realm of rod handles, exploring the different types of handles in more details. For now we take a look at EVA handles.
149
EVA If you’ve got a few fishing rods sitting on your rod rack, chances are that some of them come with EVA handles. EVA of which is short for Ethylene Vinyl Acetate is a rubbery spongy like material that is commonly found in most fishing rods. EVA comes in a variety of colors with black being the norm. EVA is used in both freshwater and saltwater rods as they are resistant to UV, heat, saltwater, etc. Do note that there is also a material that is very closely related to EVA called Hypalon of which is more compact and harder than EVA. In this article, EVA will be used to represent it as well.
151
Why EVA? EVA simply makes great handles. EVA handles have lots of benefits over other handles such as cork handles making them one of the most widely used materials on fishing rods. Let us take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages.
153
Tough &
Long Lasting EVA rod handles are tough. They can take a beating and still remain intact. They can take on heat from the sun, salty sediments from seawater, and even the torture of rod holders. That is one of the reasons why heavy duty boat rod handles are almost always made of EVA.
155
Insects Do Not Like Eating EVA Cork handles tend to dry out and crack. With fish slime and other stuffs from baits, etc. cork handles turn into feast for insects. EVA handles on the other hand do not dry out and crack, and they certainly do not turn into a cookie for insects as with cork handles.
157
Easy Maintenance
EVA needs lesser maintenance and they are easier to clean. As anglers we hold fish and other slimy stuffs and slime get transferred onto our rod handles. Fish slime and other gooey things can be washed out easily and even brushed out without causing damage.
159
Lower Cost Unlike cork EVA is cheaper and thus helps bring the cost of fishing rods down. Of course that does not mean that the savings in cost actually drives retail prices lower. A reduction in the cost of the handle also means that better accessories can be used such as better quality guides, etc. by transferring the saved cost over.
161
Can Be Colored
EVA doesn’t necessary have to be black in color. They can be in almost any color and design that you want. You can have them in blue, red, yellow, even striped, with drawings, or in camouflage colors or military styled colors. Such versatility adds to the design of a rod series’ theme.
163
EVA Can Be Sculpted
EVA handles can be sculpted without breaking of which is one of the disadvantages of using cork. EVA handles can be shaved thin, sculpted to fit hands, etc. without having to worry too much about breakage. This also means that although EVA is generally heavier than cork, it can be shaved thinner to be lighter.
165
The Disadvant
tages Slippery When Wet
EVA tends to get slippery when wet especially when fishing in the rain or out at sea where water splashes; as it soaks up water. I for one have accidentally dropped a rod into the sea due to the slipperiness of the EVA handle.
167
Reduced Sensitivity
Well, there is a reduction in sensitivity as cork transmits vibration better than EVA. Note that with modern rod and reel seat designs; this may soon be a point that can be thrown into the bin. For now it still is relevant.
169
Weighs More Than Cork
EVA is heavier if we compare it to cork of the same size, length, and design. However, the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages and furthermore EVA can be shaved down to bring the weight to that of cork handles or lower of which cannot be done on cork handles to save weight.
171
Conclusion EVA handles are the norm these days and the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Furthermore it is cost effective to use them and they last really long. I have rods with EVA handles dating back to the 70s where the EVA handles have outlived the rod guides. If you want a rod to last that long, EVA handles are the way to go.

Fishing With Soft Plastics: Part 12 Soft Plastics: Caring For Them By Philemon Foo
A few weeks ago one of our read-
ers asked why his soft plastic baits tend to melt. He isn’t alone as there are a lot of people who have decided to drop using soft plastic baits because of this. He (our reader) mentioned that the soft plastics that were kept together with other lures damaged those lures as well. If you’ve been a victim, this article is for you.
2
175
Why Do They Melt
t??? Soft plastic baits are made of plastics and plastics are made using various chemicals in the process (I will not go into details as it will take a very long article to do so). Different plastics use different chemicals and sometimes when two different plastics come together and the chemicals used in both plastics meet, they start reacting to each other. This is why they melt.
177
Keeping Them Saf
fe
So how does one store soft plastic baits? Well, it is quite easy. The best place to keep them is in the same packaging that they came in. The reason for this is because the manufacturer knows which plastics to use and they package their baits in them.
179
Sandwich Bag
Another safe way to store them is to use re-sealable sandwich bags that can be purchased at supermarkets. What I always do just before heading out to fish is to take a few soft plastic baits out of their original packing and place them in sandwich bags. The unused ones after the trip will then be left in these sandwich bags according to brand and color. I do not mix them.
181
Those With Liquid
Scent Some soft plastic baits come in tubs filled with liquid scent such as Berkley’s Gulp! Alive. For these baits it is best to remove what you need from the tub and place them in a re-sealable sandwich bag with about a tea spoon of liquid.
183
Storing Used Soft B
Baits For such soft baits it is best to discard the used ones as they may contain parasites that will attack the unused soft plastic baits. But if you insist of keeping them (only for a few days as they may turn mouldy), store them in separate sandwich bags together with other used ones of the same kind.
Make it a habit to always separate your used soft baits even if they do not come scented. The main reason being parasites and other unwelcomed opportunists hitching a ride or feeding on them. If they get mixed up with new ones they will spread and destroy them as well.
185
No Mixing
It is not recommended to keep soft plastics of different colors and even different brands together as they may react to each other staining each other and sometimes melting. Well, unless you intend for colors to mix and stain each other out of creative purposes, never mix them.
187
Storing In Tackle B
Boxes Storing them in tackle boxes can be risky. I admit that I do store some of my soft baits in tackle boxes but they have been proven safe for soft baits. If you are unsure and still prefer to store your soft baits in tackle boxes, store them in sandwich bags first before keeping them in your tackle box.
One of my older tackle boxes that reacted to my soft plastic baits.

Soft Plastics And H
Hard Lures Never ever store soft plastic baits with other plastic lures (hard bodied). Chances of them reacting to each other are on the high. Damage is almost guaranteed to happen. Hard plastic lures have melted. I have seen hard plastic lures moulted to soft plastic baits. Don’t store them together. Keep them safely apart.

Conclusion
There you go. If you have been frustrated with soft baits before because of bad storage, I hope this article has helped you understand why it happened and perhaps coax you back to using soft plastic baits as they are really effective baits for fishing. Well, I hope this helps.

Abu Garcia Salty S Jigging Does Peka By Philemon Foo
A few issues (November 2013 is-
sue) ago we featured the Abu Garcia Salty Stage Light Jigging rod and recently we had the opportunity to put it into action again. This time the Salty Stage Light Jigging rod saw action in the waters of Pekan (coastal waters on the east coast of the Malaysian peninsular).

Fun To Play With
The Abu Garcia Salty Stage Light Jigging rod in all of its sporty looking glory jigged light jigs really well keeping us in contact with the jig. It cast the jigs out really well too with its whippy tip. I was casting out 20gram jigs to frenzy feeding tongkol (tuna species). Unfortunately I didn’t catch anything on the Salty Stage Light Jigging rod.
197
Chemistry Maybe...
. However, when the rod was handed to Ming of Pure Fishing Malaysia and within minutes it bent and he was in battle with a brute. The battle lasted about 5 minutes and up came a diamond trevally. I guess chemistry between rod and owner made magic. Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.
199
Satisfaction Graph
Ooh! Since no one was using the Salty Stage I decided to play with it
Jigs really well; constant connection with jig
No fish, no hits, quiet
h About 5 minutes later Salty Stage wins
Battle ensues and the Salty Stage is tortured
Minutes later rod bents
No hits... sigh... hand rod over to Ming
