T

he bull is one of the toughest animals in the animal Kingdom. It is full of muscle, is extremely tough, and a powerful fighter. It takes more than one tiger to drop a bull. The bull in Spanish is called Toro. Abu Garcia does indeed have a powerhouse of a reel called Toro. This is the Toro Beast.

Last issue we introduced the Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast; sharing with you some of its features. This time we put it to the test in the real world. But before that here are some things that are worth highlighting.

To Related Article 11

Good Size

The Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast 61 HS is a good sized reel that sits comfortably in my hands. While some may say that it is a bit too big (depending on one’s hands) it is larger than the normal low profile baitcasting reels as the Beast is made to take on hard fighting saltwater fighters and big freshwater gladiators.

Gear Ratio

The Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast has a gear ratio of 6.2:1 with a retrieval speed of 86cm per turn. Not supersonic fast but fast enough especially for a saltwater reel with the power of the bull. 13

Braking Systems

When it comes to Braking the Revo Toro Beast comes with both a magnetic brake system with 8 magnets and a centrifugal braking system. Having both types of braking systems in one reel allows for more versatility and better casting controls. In short, you have more options.

Magnetic System with 8 magnets.

15

The dial that controls the setting on the magnetic brakes.

Back At The Lab

To test the drag power of the Revo Toro Beast we took it to our lab and put it through the pressure test. Abu Garcia claims that the Beast has a maximum drag of 25lb. We managed to get it to 25lb with relative ease, and then some more, “accidentally touching 27lb. r. 17

Field Test

We tested the Beast out at sea. It cast pretty well casting jigs, lures, and live baits to good distances. While bottom fishing the Beast has the ability to tirelessly reel in the weight of the heavy sinker (about half kg.). It certainly has a powerful gearing system.

In The Ring

When it comes to the fight it has enough power to manage and subdue hard fighting fishes landing snappers, silver trevallies, cobias, etc. with relative ease. With its powerful drag it easily tires out fishes as they run. Its drag performed smoothly too throughout our trip with zero hiccups. 19

Verdict

The Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast strength, power, and toughness. It spirit of an unforgiving warrior that wrath to all who oppose. That is the tween the bull and the beast

Pflueger

President Limited Edition

Series: President Limited Edition Model: PRESLESP40 Testing Grounds: Natural Exotic Fishing Pond Opponents: Amazon Red Tail Catfish

In December we introduced the Pflueger President

Limited Edition spinning reel, the dark knight; not the Batman Dark Knight but the sinister kind that keeps King Arthur up at night. Thus now it is time to put it to the test.

To Related Article 25

Powerful Drag

Pflueger claims that the President Limited Edition Comes with a 12lb maximum drag. That is certainly a decent drag pressure for such a reel. Let us see if it will do what it says it can do in our lab. More importantly, will it remain smooth under the maximum drag pressure.

Lab Test

With a target of 12lb in mind we put the President Limited Edition to the pressure test. We pushed the drag all the way up and managed to get it to 12lb easily. However, we could still increase the drag. We managed to get it to 14lb. The drag is now maxed out and it still smooth at this poundage. 27

Field Test

Line: Berkley Fireline Braid Poundage: 20lb

Having cast our baits near the pillars we awaited for the gladiators to take our baits. As usual they obliged and the fight ensued. The rod bent and the gladiator took off. With the drag almost maxed I had to drop the rod cutting off the pressure on the fish getting it to stop. Palming the spool I dragged it out further away from the pillars and into open waters.

Managing Fights

In the open, the fish ran and the drag performed smoothly all the time. It didn’t take long for the gladiators to throw in the towel. We didn’t lose any fish despite having end up in the pillars a few times due to the softer action of the rod. We fought a few hard fighting gladiators and the President Limited Edition remained smooth. 29

Summary

The Pflueger President Limited Edition is a good looking reel. It is a smooth performer, has good drag, and can take on hard fights well. I like its smoothness especially during the fight. Furthermore, the “Limited Edition bit sounds really good.

Pflueger Supreme XT

P

flueger has always been on the lighter side of things and the same thing can be seen with the Supreme XT of which Pflueger claims to be the lightest in its class. Its “light weightiness is achieved with the use of a magnesium body and rotor, lightweight carbon fibre handle, and ported aluminium spool.

Modest Design

When it comes to design, the Supreme XT is modestly designed. Not too flashy and not too loud, this reel may not create a commotion but its subtle metallic candy orange linings on the gun metal coloured aluminium spool, and the sporty looking light weight handle holds hints of its character. 35

Casting Abilities

The aluminium spool comes fitted with rubber which allows braided lines to hold on too and not slip. The Supreme XT is not a sleeper. With braided lines filled in it is ready to take on fights and the tough aluminium spool is not one to crack under pressure.

Smooth Performance

The Supreme XT is a smooth performer. It is smoother than some of the reels that carry a higher price tag. The smoothness is unlike some of the more high end reels that feel almost vacuum like. There is a hint of connectivity of the handle to the gears. Just a hint. 37

Ready For The Sea

The Supreme XT comes ready to take on the finned creatures of the sea. It comes with 10 HPCR (High Performance Corrosion Resistant) bearings to resist the corrosive qualities of saltwater, and a sealed carbon fibre drag system that blocks out water, and provides for what Pflueger claims to be a 14lb max drag on this size 40 reel.

Lab Test

Line: Berkley Nanofil Poundage: 17lb

Back at our lab we put the Supreme XT to the test. With a 14lb max drag target we pushed up the drag and the torture begun. It easily touched 14lb and then it maxed out at 18.5lb; very impressive. The drag remained smooth with no sticky feel. 39

Field Test

Line: Berkley Nanofil Poundage: 17lb

To test the Supreme XT’s prowess in the real world we brought it to the Natural Exotic pond in Rawang, Selangor (Malaysia). We pitted it against the some of the hard fighting predators that lie in wait for a battle. We cast our baits near the pillars of the restaurant that sits on them.

Good Control

The Supreme XT had a few fights being able to manage the Amazonian red tail catfishes that took our bait. There is enough drag to pull the fishes out of the danger zones. The drag is also smooth even on high drag. There was no sign of stickiness from the drag even after a few fights. 41

Summary

The Pflueger Supreme XT may be a modestly design reel but when it comes to fishing, it is by no means modest. It is smooth (both cranking and drag), it has a strong enough drag, and it fights well. One more thing I like to add is that it lays lines in the spool well too. So, here you go... a reel in a simple modest package.

Pulau Jarak Escapade

Fishing With Man Botak

P

ulau Jarak (Jarak Island) is a little rock island off Lumut, Perak; a coastal town west of Malaysia. The waters around Pulau Jarak is a well known fishing spot. For many years anglers have been heading out to Pulau Jarak; to relief one’s lack of fishing “itchiness.”

The Skipper

Our skipper this time round is the funny, cheerful, and knowledgeable Man Botak. Man pronounced Mun as in gun can be translated to friend while Botak translates to bald. Man Botak = Bald friend or something along those lines. We met him at the Lumut Yacht Club and from there we shot towards Pulau Jarak. 83

Catching Baits

Live baits are great for bottom fishing and thus the first thing to do is to head out to places where bait fishes hangout. Using apollo rigs we dropped them to the bottom and started to jig them. Bait fishes instantly hit them and within about 15 minutes we had more than enough live bait for our fishing.

Time For Some Serious Fishing

With enough baitfish (selar, kembong, and little fishes that look like mullet) we shot off to our first fishing spot where the action starts and we get to test some fishing tackle. Hooking the baitfish by the nose, we dropped them all the way to the bottom (depending where the fishes are on the sonar) and before long we were on to fish. This spot brought up a few hard fighting silver trevallies. 85

Silver Trevallies

These shiny silver “knights are hard fighters but they are no match for our tackle; not forgetting the half kilogram weighted sinkers that they had to put up with. We had to fight these sinkers too, as well as the currents, and the swaying boat. At the end these white knights got to have their pictures taken.

“Snappertopia”

The next secret spot that Man Botak took us to is where the snappers lived, “Snappertopia.” We decided to do some jigging and Abu Garcia Skid Jigs were the chosen bullets. Bouncing the jigs off the bottom registered some hits followed by the torture of the Abu Garcia Jiggernaut rod bending it better than “Beckham.” 87

The Jiggernaut paired with the Penn Fathom overhead powerhouse reel proved to be too much for the hard fighting snappers. They fought hard. They had a few runs but were still subdued and in no time brought up to smile for the cameras.

Night Fishing

The world around us turned dark. The only lights we had come from the tubes of LED bulbs that gave us the needed light to continue fishing. The nightshift working snappers kept us entertained until the winds suddenly turned cold.

89

The Final Battle As the cold winds blew, the boat started swaying violently. White caps started appearing followed by flashes of lightning lighting up the night sky. We prepared to head back to land but not before the biggest snapper of our trip decided to go for one final rampage. The final battle ensued as rain drops and strong winds turned into an ugly storm. Fighting in a storm is tough but still the angler came up tops.

Products Tested: Abu Garcia Salty Stage Skid Jig

These high quality jigs are well balanced and inspired by the darting and attacking action of squids. It also, mimics a squid skidding from side to side when it is in distress and the skidding motion, creates lots of flashes in the water.

91

Bouncing the skid jig at the bottom produced snappers during our trip. The average height movement from the bottom to the top of the jigging motion is about 3 feet. This movement plus the action of the Skid Jig proved successful on this trip.

Abu Garcia Jiggernaut Rod

The Jiggernaut is a rod that we tested much earlier (prototype). It has since been through some improvements and thus saw some action on this trip. It has a good action and has enough power to manage hard fighters despite being quite a slim rod.

93

Abu Garcia Salty Stage KR-X Jigging Rod

The Abu Garcia Salty Stage KR-X Jigging Rod has proven itself to be a hard fighting rod that is very well balanced and has loads of lifting power with a strong powerful tip that rebounds well. It is a surprisingly light rod that looks really good and sporty. It comes with quality Fuji components.

Lure Fishing Basics

Yo u r Ta c k l e

O

Part 5

ver the past 4 issues we have talked about lure types and last issue we discussed lure adjustments or tuning. Last issue I mentioned that we will go into lure playing techniques in this issue but as I wrote and wrote about the techniques, it occurred to me that I forgot something important; the equipment.

Things To Note

Before you cast, note that how your lure acts and the effectiveness of it depends on a few other things as well. Think of yourself as the driver. Your rod is the steering wheel, the reel is your engine and the reel handle is your accelerator, and the line is like your fuel. 97

The Rod

I equate your fishing rod to your steering wheel because it moves the lure in the direction you intend the lure to move in. Point your fishing rod upwards to have the lure swim at a slightly higher depth or down to allow it to swim to a lower depth.

Pointing the rod to the left or right will change the trajectory of the lures direction to the left or right. This is used sometimes to avoid something or to target something of which you want the lure to swim past.

99

Rod Action

How your lure acts underwater depends also on the action of your rod especially the tip section. Some rod tips are too soft and is unable to manipulate the lure thus the lure may have a weaker swim action depending on your retrieval technique . This is especially true with deep diving lures. All said, any rod can be used as long as it is able to manage the lure and thus It is important to use an appropriate rod for your style of lure Fishing.

The Reel, Your Engine

One thing to understand is that like an engine of a car, some reels are faster and some are slower, depending on gear ratios and to a certain extent, handle lengths (especially if you’ve changed your handle to a longer or shorter one).

101

Reel speeds do effect the lure’s action. Like an engine, if you change reels to one with a different speed (gear ratio), you will need to adjust your cranking speed; or how fast you crank the handle of which is like the accelerator of a car. The faster you crank, the faster your lure swims. Slow down your cranking and the lure will swim slower too.

An example of how speed can affect your fishing is when you fish for sebaraus ( Hampala macrolepidota). These speed hunters love to chase down prey and speed is important. On a high speed reel your catches may be quite constant and when you change to a lower speed reel but you still crank the reel at the same cranking speed that you are used too, your catch rate drops. 103

Well, sometimes it could be that the fishes have gone or its meal time has passed, as some put it. But it could very likely be the case of a lure swimming too slow especially if there are no changes to the conditions of nature.

Lines, Your Fuel

The reason I liken lines to the fuel or petrol for a car is because it actually plays the part. How far you lure flies depends generally on the weight and design of your lure (of course), as well as the line type, diameter, and weight. Needless to say if you’ve got not enough line your lure will not be able to go the distance but that is usually not the case because commonsense dictates that you have enough line in your spool, right? 105

The diameter and line weight does affect your casting distance too, even if the conditions of nature such as wind, air pressure, etc. are not taken into consideration. The thicker the line the more resistance even to air itself.

The heavier the line, the more weight the lure has to carry with it throughout its flight and thus the additional burden on the lure, reduces its distance. Does it not sound like the fuel type you choose to use in your car? Ron 95 vs Ron 97 vs Ron 99... of course the condition of your engine; in this case, the reel, plays an important part too. 107

Another thing to note about lines is that they have resistance in water. Some lines float, some sink faster than others, and some makes more noise than others. Pay attention to your line. If you are fishing at a deeper depth you will want to choose a line that will help your lure get down to that depth faster. Above: Fluorocarbon sinks the fastest.

With that in mind a faster sinking line will be the best option. Fluorocarbon or lines with Fluorocarbon properties work best. Fused lines work great too especially when the need is for a sinking line that has a smaller diameter and line noises are not part of the worry. But should you want to fish top water, a line that floats will better. Your best choice will thus be braided lines.

109

Terminal Tackle

When it comes to terminal tackle I prefer them small but strong. So don’t skim on them. Note that terminal tackles such as snaps and swivels are additional weight that the lure will have to deal with. Generally the smaller your lure, the smaller the terminal tackle. Using a tiny snap normally used with 4 inch lures, on a large trolling lure is a bad idea too.

As for hooks, most lures will come with a set of hooks. Most of these hooks are treble hooks. You have the option of changing them to either stronger trebles or to single hooks. Whichever the choice ensure that you get one with is of the appropriate size. If unsure, it is best to get one that is of similar size to the one that your lure came with. 111

To Sum Up

These little technicalities are things to consider every time you pack for a fishing trip, especially one that involves casting. There is no one rod for all types of fishing and there is no line, snap, swivel or hook for all types of lure fishing. The information in this article will help you a long way.

The Asian Angler

All About Hooks: Part 5 Assist Hoo ks

A

ssist hooks are hooks that you normally see secured to metal jigs. They are hooks secured to a piece of cord which is made of Kevlar, Polyethylene, etc. These cords are then fused in with a heat shrink material.

Some assist hooks are linked to a ring at the other end. Some of them are linked to another hook (double assist hook). Some cords are just tied into a loop. All these options are for the angler to choose from depending on his or her preference.

115

y h W

? e s U

Assist hooks being secured to the jigs with cords, are allowed to hang freely. They are not rigid. This means that they can move in many a direction of which also means that they can hook fish in many a place. It also increases hook up rates.

Rigid Is Not Always Good

When it comes to metal jigs especially heavier ones, a hook secured to a jig in a rigid manner is actually a disadvantage to the angler. Every fish that gets hooked will shake its head to try to get it off. Having a hook that is attached to a jig in a rigid manner increase the likelihood of the fish freeing itself from the hook using the weight of the jig as leverage. Contents Page

Salmo Hornet Story - Secretive Rise of a New Classic Legend Part 1

Some lures come, some lures go. Some stay lon-

ger than others while some disappear faster than the speed of light. However some lures tend to beat the test of time and seemingly last forever, these are the evergreen and popular legends that would easily finds its place in every angler heart, and their tackle boxes.

,

Histor y

Salmo Hornet may not be new to anglers in many parts of the world. In fact, it is just celebrated its 20th anniversary and is Salmo’s best selling lure. There was a time when stocks had to be rationed due to an overwhelming demand in the United States. For some reason it has remained a secret weapon for some of the anglers but its reputation is growing and has the potential of becoming one of the legendary lures. 119

Introduction

The reason for its overwhelming sales is simple. Salmo Hornet lures catch fish! It does so very easily by fishing using the simplest lure playing methods that every lure angler knows and is accustomed to. Even for beginner the Salmo Hornet catches fish. After all it is as easy as casting out your Salmo Hornet and retrieving it back in, of which is a simple technique that catches fish.

The Salmo Hornet covers a full range of sizes and many characteristics making them a lure series that covers almost every fishing conditions be it streams, ponds and lakes, brackish waters, and out at sea. From tiny 2.5cm lures to large 9cm lures, Salmo Hornet has a size for just about every crank baiting styles; from ultralight to trolling to heavy cover game fishing. 121

Salmo Hornets comes with a hosts of different variations that suits all sorts of fishing such sinking and floating models, longer diving lip that helps deflect the lure off structures ad to dive deep, as well as rattling models for bait casting enthusiast. With an amazing lineup as such in one package, it is no wonder why the Hornet is a widely accepted and sought after lure.

Nostalgia

The first time I set my eyes on the Hornet was way back in June 2011 at the now defunct Oceansea Sport Fishing Tackle, Seri Kembangan; where I used to hang out almost daily back it its heyday. Being there almost daily seeing lures new and old come and go, nothing much go by me without me noticing. After a while it got bored(something anyone who hangs out daily in the same tackle shop can attest to) as most products are the same but with a different name. 123

The Salmo Hor net However the Salmo Hornet immediately caught my eye as soon as I saw them. They look different but in some familiarly good way. You may call me idealistic but Salmo somehow reminds me of a classic and legendary lure, a lure from days gone; to me, a walk down memory lane especially the way they performed.

Structure

Featuring a rather rounded shad profile with a dizzying yet familiar array of colors, the Salmo Hornet lures are crank baits made out of hardened foam with wired through construction which bears striking similarities to the traditional balsa lure of the past in terms of texture and weight. The difference is in the condensed foam used in the Salmo Hornet’s body that is almost unbreakable as compared to the balsa counterpart. 125

The foam body is far superior to some brittle plastic lures that are widely available in the market today. This amazing test of strength is shown on YouTube too, whereby different types of lure bodies were put under the mercy of a hammer! In addition, the Hornet comes with a nearly unbreakable lip design coupled with wire through design, making them the hardiest lure I have ever fish with to date.

Casting I drove home the proud owner of a couple of Salmo Hornet lures that very same day, Being a rather impatient angler, I put them to the test the very next day. The feeling of nostalgia hit me as soon as I cast out its very first cast.

It was exactly the same as its similarly profiled balsa wood brethren. That said, I would recommend casting the smaller 2.5cm to 5cm Hornets with spinning gear. The Rattling Hornet 4.5cm could go a mile even on a baitcasting setup.

127

The bigger Hornets and to some extent the 5cm ones can easily be cast using a casting setup. The smaller Hornets of 4cm and below would be perfect for ultralight fanatics, whereas 5cm and 6cm are more for the regular casting baits, with the 9cm Hornets reserved for the diehard heavy duty and heavy cover enthusiast.

To Be Continued

Next issue we will go further touching on action, application, etc. For now I wish you happy fishing and do give the Hornet a try.

Time For Crankbaits

H

ello everyone!

I have got sad news. One of my favourite fishing spots is getting covered. The snakeheads here have taken a lot of my time, and it is sure worth every second pent on it.

The fishing has been very tough due to construction work to cover the pond. After a week of fishing without any bites on multiple lures, I tried crank baiting. I managed to unlock the biting pattern. The wobble and vibrations of a crankbait are irresistible to haruans. 131

My younger brother caught this solid snakehead on a steady, slow retrieve with the Duo Realis Crank 48 SR. So far haruans of all sizes go for crankbaits. Single hooks were used to keep the crankbait in the strike zones longer which are along grass and weeds.

This juvenile came from under some water hyacinths. It was hooked on a limited edition Berkley crankbait which was designed for Bream. I had multiple hits from larger snakeheads which also came from under the water hyacinths.

133

A double hook up. My buddy caught his haruan on the 3 Zman MinnowZ with a steady retrieve over a weedbed. He used a Surecatch Meteorite 8-17lbs rod while I used the Surecatch D-Legend 10-20lb rod. Both rods were great in handling haruans.

This juvenile was caught beside some weeds by my younger brother. It ambushed the crank along a grass edge. From the sound of splashes, I thought it was a big one. As I approached my younger brother, I saw this little haruan. It was definitely a fighter. 135

Here is a juvenile Sebarau on a pressured river. There are nets along the river and the river is located just beside a main road. I fished for 2 hours without any bites. Right before leaving this Sebarau took my spoon on my last cast with a stop and go retrieve. It ambushed my spoon during the fall, beside a weedbed. Good luck again in 2016 and as always practice catch & release and stay safe while fishing.

Bring Your Kids Fishing Every child needs to spend time outdoors. Fishing in a safe and educational sport that both your child and you can bond with.. Put away those tabs, iPhones, Androids, and pick up a reel, rod, line, hook, and sinker... Don’t forget some bait. Happy Fishing. The Asian Angler Team Contents Page

Leech Socks

L

eeches are pesky yucky creatures, the nightmare of many an urbanite. These creatures are the vampires of the wild. As anglers we encounter them sometimes on our fishing trips into the jungles especially during the wet season. One of the ways to counter these pesky vampires is to put on a good pair of leech socks the next time to hike into the jungle, heading towards your favourite fishing hole.
