My fellow anglers and friends, Greetings to all. I hope all of you are having lots of fun fishing time. We have been busy as usual of which is good, and decided to add crazy into the mix as well. We decided to embark on a journey of urban fishing. That does not sound crazy. It sounds like a bunch of optimistic angler folks hoping to catch something within the urban environment. Well, we decided to use a jigging rod. Haha, now that sounds crazy doesn’t it? We did just that using the Abu Garcia SaltyStage Jiggernaut and it worked great. I’ll not spoil your read. Do check it out inside. Also, after embarking on a travel magazine and travelling about the country I realized just how wonderful Malaysia is for anglers. We have everything from big lakes, to big game saltwater fishing. Our fish stocks may not be as good and they have also become smarter (something that I observed in Belum) which means that we now have to think outside the box and change the way we fish. Do give this some thought. Meanwhile, I hope you enjoy this issue. Do share us with your friend too by sending them the link to our site. The more readers we have, the longer we can remain free. If you’ve not subscribed to our magazines, please do to ensure that you get all issues, They are free after all. Fishing

Dark Water, Battling The Giants Of Lumut

Ahoy! Off To Lumut

M

ost anglers have heard of the Sembilan Islands (Pulau Sembilan), etc. and the waters off Lumut, Perak. These waters have quite a few good fishing spots and many anglers do frequent these waters when they feel the need to do battle with worthy fighters. 11

Jigging Action

Recently we did some fishing and product testing with Thomas, the knowledgeable and friendly skipper of Dark Water, a black themed walkabout boat fitted with twin 150 outboards. We met up at the Lumut Yacht Club and headed out to sea for some jigging action.

Skilled Angler

Thomas our skipper is not only a good boatman. He is also a skilled angler and he has quite a few good spots up his sleeves. There was not a time of disappointment fishing with him. In fact we only rested when our stomachs called out for food, or when we were on the go. Almost every stop we made, we caught fish. 13

Tackle On Test

On this trip we tested some slow pitch rods by Zen X EA, Rod Ford Volante Jigs, Decoy Twin Pike assist hooks, and the Abu Garcia BigShooter reel.

Taking On Groupers

One of the fishes that took the Rod Ford Volante jig are groupers of various types and sizes. We dropped our jigs to the bottom and fished within an average of about 3 to 5 feet off the bottom. We were hitting groupers. The biggest grouper we hit was a giant 15kg grouper that took the Rod Ford Volante Jig and was subdued on the Zen X EA Slow Pitch Rod. 15

Andrew and his 15kg grouper caught on the Rod Ford Volante Jig, Zen Zagan Zen X EA Slow Pitch Rod.

Exhausted By Cobias

Seldom would you hear anglers telling a skipper to change spots because the fishes were big and a plenty but we chanced upon a spot of cobias. Imagine seven anglers jigging and all seven hitting cobias at almost the same time over and over again. The skipper was having a hard time keeping up too as he had to help us free the fish from our jigs. 17

When gladiators this big attacked over and over again, it wasn’t long before exhaustion kicked in.

Cobia after cobia after cobia. 19

Drop the jig after releasing the fish, give it a few jigs and WHAM! fish on again. Before Thomas could free all the cobias more were on their way. We didn’t even bother bringing most of them up on board for photos. After about 45 minutes of fishing cobias we had enough an d requested to change spots. Thomas posing with a cobia before releasing it.

Other Fishes Caught

Other fishes that we caught during our two days of fishing come product testing trip are golden snappers, tuna, leather jacket, a 4 to 5 feet black tip shark, and some hard fighting jig biting squids. We had two days of very good fishing. 21

A tuna took a liking to the Volante Jig.

Products Tested: Rod Ford Volante Jigs

The Rod Ford Volante Jigs are centre weighted jigs designed or slow pitch rhythmic jigging styles. They are good on the pitch and great on the drop with erratic slide and flutter action. Most fish hit the Volante jig on the drop.

Product Tested: Zen Zagan Zagan X EA Slow Pitch Rods

The Zagan X EA Slow Pitch rods are some of the best rods for slow jigging. They are lightweight, and well balanced. They come with a softer tip that has enough recoil muscles to lift the jigs but for most of the fishes, a harder strike is needed to ensure a solid hook up. 25

The Zagan X EA Slow Pitch has certainly proven itself to be a very good fighting rod managing and beating brutes from large cobias, to a giant grouper, and a 4 to 5 feet black tip shark. It has lots of power within its power zone despite the slim appearance and light weight.

Product Tested: Decoy Twin Pike Assist Hooks

The Decoy Twin Pike Assist Hooks are tough and sharp hooks. They provide for solid hook ups. That said, I did lose fish too but then again such situations are common in fishing. Unfortunately, I lost the hooks too together with the jigs due to line burst and line cut probably by a barracuda. 27

Product Tested: Abu Garcia Revo BigShooter

The Abu Garcia Revo BigShooter is a powerhouse of a reel. It has strong drag, tough gearing, and it takes in lots of lines making it ideal for saltwater fishing. It has lots of power to manage huge and hard fighting fishes including big cobias.

Certainly a good workout. 29

Abu Garcia Revo STX Like its low profile counterpart, the Revo速 STX spinning reel is built on a foundation of high quality components and lightweight design. At its core is a machined aluminum main gear design that delivers superior gear feel and performance. Engineered to outperform. Gear Ratio: 6.2:1 | Bearings: 10 | Hand Retrieve: Right / Left

Abu Garcia Revo SX The Revo® SX spinning reel takes cutting edge design to the next level. By utilizing an Insert Molded C6 (IM-C6™) carbon body design that incorporates a one piece aluminum gear box, the latest Revo SX is lighter than the previous generation while maintaining excellent rigidity. Gear Ratio: 6.2:1 | Bearings: 9 | Hand Retrieve: Right / Left

Abu Garcia Revo S Smooth performance meets unique design in the updated Revo® S spinning reel platform. Class-leading features such as the Insert Molded C6 (IM-C6™) carbon body design, a Carbon Matrix™ drag system and HPCR™ (High Performance Corrosion Resistant) bearings make this Revo spinning reel a fierce contender. A compact and lightweight design deliver all-day comfort on the water while the bold white cosmetics are sure to turn heads. Bearings: 8 | Hand Retrieve: Right / Left

The Nightmare Of

Monsters Testing Grounds: Lumut Series: Revo Big Shooter Model: WM50 Opponents: Cobias, Groupers, Etc.

F

ishing saltwater has changed since Abu Garcia gave to the fishing world low profile big game reels that could take a lot more line and manage saltwater predators. Those were the days of the Revo Toro. Fast forward about 8 years (more or less) and we have quite a few reels, and this here is the Revo BigShooter. 33

Monster Truckin’ Reel

My opinion on the looks of the BigShooter is that it does not look sleek nor does it look sexy. It actually looks plain and big. It looks tough somewhat like heavy machinery. It looks more monster truck and not at all race car. It is after all heavy artillery and not merely a pistol.

Big Game Powerhouse

The BigShooter takes in lots of lines allowing one to either have more lines to manage the fish letting it tire itself out or to use heavier lines thus allowing the angler a more brutish fight, gladiator to gladiator. The BigShooter certainly can handle this sort of fight with its powerful drag and sturdy gears. 35

Easy Control

Casting with the BigShooter is easy. It comes with both a centrifugal (6 points) and a magnetic drag system. Having both systems gives the angler better control and more cast setting options of which is great especially since the lures and jigs used with this sort of reels are usually heavier and larger.

Field Test

I took the BigShooter to the waters of Lumut, Perak, to do some jigging. Controlling the cast was easy even with jigs as heavy as 250 grams. I did a lot of casting without an issues throughout the entire two days of fishing. 37

Brute Management

The fishing was really good and we hit a lot of very hard fighting brutes. Some of the brutes fought like pile drivers, and some fought like bulls. The BigShooter managed them all without failure or issues. In fact, I must say that it fought well landing lots of fish. Its drag is really impressive. Even large cobias over 10kgs threw in the towel. Lost one due to the hook opening up.

The BigShooter handled the brutes well. 39

What I like

I like its powerful drag, ease of cast, and its ability to do battle without breaking. It is a serious workhorse working almost non-stop throughout our two days of jigging. Another thing that I like is that is takes lots of lines which is really great.

Room For Improvement

The BigShooter certainly is a good reel but it is not perfect. I found it to be lacking of cranking power especially since it is a reel made for saltwater fishing. Give it more cranking power and this reel will be fantastic. 41

Verdict

The Abu Garcia Revo BigShooter is a powerhouse, a brute destroyer, and a powerful fighter. It has a powerful drag, with a rigid feel, and is a tough reel. To bring it closer to perfection it will need to have its cranking power improved.

EA

Slow Pitch By Zen Zagan Testing Grounds: Lumut Series: Zen X EA Model: Slow Pitch PE1-3 Opponents: Cobias, Groupers, Etc.

W

hen Zen Zagan joined forces with Extreme Anglers an expert custom rod builder, the world finally got rods that are fine tuned to performed but at mass market prices. Such is the Zen X EA Slow Pitch rod by Zen Zagan.

47

Simplistic Design

The Zen X EA Slow Pitch comes in a simple design of a black base and red at the section just after the fore EVA. The EVA handles are designed in such a way as to be comfortable and yet good looking. Although it looks simple it does look good too. Perhaps it is because of its slim profile.

Balanced

I believe most anglers would want a rod that is lightweight and well balanced. The Zen X EA Slow Pitch is a lightweight rod and is very well balanced. This combination gives the rod a very good feel when picked up. 49

Softer Tip

Being a slow pitch rod, the Zen X EA Slow Pitch comes with a softer tip but with enough recoil power to lift the heavier jigs. With the softer tip though, one will have to strike harder to ensure a solid hook up when a fish takes the jig.

Power Zone

When it comes to power, this rod certainly has lots of power available and is more than capable in handling big and powerful brutes. When the bend reaches its power zone the rod goes to work flexing its muscles, taking on powerful fighters, hence my use of the word, “magic. 51

Field Test

We took the Zen X EA to Lumut and put it to the test. Although it comes with a softer tip it is capable of casting out 200 gram jigs with relative ease. What’s more impressive is its power. It managed so many fights well subduing big, hard fighting predator fishes such as big cobias, a 4 to 5 feet black tip shark, a giant grouper, and many more.

Verdict

The Zen X EA Slow Pitch rod is one very capable rod that is well built and has lots of power. It is lightweight, well balanced, and can manage fights with properly big and hard fighting fishes. Should you want to enhance further its performance, you can, by changing its guides to Fuji guides.

Rod Ford Volante Jig Testing Grounds: Lumut Series: Volante Model: Various Opponents: Cobias, Groupers, Etc.

R

od Ford Volante jigs are centre weighted designed for slow pitch jerk, a jigging method is rhythmic and slow but very effective. The lante’s action on the drop is erratic with slides flutters as it goes to the bottom.

jigs that Voand

57

Dual Coloured Jigs

The Volante comes with high quality holographic coloured body that creates flashes in the water attracting predator fishes to attack. Some of them come with luminous coloured stripes that helps the jig to be visible in low light conditions, underwater.

Field Test

We tested the Volante Jig in Lumut. With the currents being quite strong we used an jigs from 150 grams during the slower currents to 250 grams when the current picks up. We dropped them to the bottom and slow pitched them up to about 5 to 10 feet off the bottom depending on where were fishing. 59

Fish Approved

The Volante jig is very effective and has a very good hit rate in these waters. Here in Lumut they have proven to work on grouper (very effective), snapper (effective), cobia (very effective), tuna (somewhat effective), shark, leatherjacket, and squid (very effective).

Verdict

On my future jigging trips, the Rod Ford Volante jigs will certainly be part of my arsenal. They have proven themselves in the waters off Lumut and I am sure that they will work in other areas too. They are quality jigs with attractive colours that fishes seem to have given their approval. Now, one will just need to learn how to work them effectively.

61

Even sharks love the Volante jig.

ZCraft Du Souel Jig

D

u Souel Jig is especially designed by ZCraft field testers to provide anglers with a jig that is easy to control when it comes to creating action. These jigs are fine tuned using the EDGE technology designing a shape that allows it to swim with a fish like movement even through complex currents.

Du Souel jigs respond well to subtle controlled movements both upward as well as downwards imitating a baitfish hovering in the currents combined with the occasional flutter and weaving actions.

67

Du Souel jigs are targeted towards fast feeding pelagics as well as bottom feeders. They come in vibrant colours and with glow in the dark colours that allows for the Du Souel to be spotted at lower depths. At depths where even the luminous glow in the dark colours disappear, the Du Souel remains visible with Active UV paint.

NEW Launches

Abu Garcia

Villain Is Back

Villain 2.0 81

Villain 2.0

A

bu Garcia recently launched the Villain 2.0, an updated version of the previous Abu Garcia Villain rod series. The earlier Abu Garcia Villain is a rod built using high carbon, 40 ton graphite rod blanks of which provided for high sensitivity, lightness, stiffer action, and a good feel.

Enhanced

The Villain 2.0 comes with such a blank but with enhancements. The 2.0 comes with added “V Wrap carbon construction, 40 tone graphite blank that allows for a lighter but stronger blank. Doing so not only enhances the strength of the Villain 2.0; it also further enhances the sensitivity of the rod. 83

High Quality Components

When it comes to components Abu Garcia went with the best. They opted to fit the Villain 2.0 with titanium alloy guides of which are tough with Zirconium inserts (rings) of which are lightweight and smooth.

Fuji Reel Seat

For the reel seat, Abu Garcia fitted the Villain 2.0 with quality Fuji reels seats that holds on to reels well and in turn allows the angler to fish without the reel seat going loose. This ads to the comfort and confidence level of the angler especially when in battle with a big fish. 85

Quality EVA

The Villain 2.0 comes with high quality EVA that tappers down from the reel seat to give the angler a more comfortable hold. The back section tappers down from the putt cap towards the split section which gives a good grip too for double handed casts.

Features

40 Ton graphite for a lightweight balanced design and increased sensitivity V Wrap™ carbon construction provides an increase in strength and durability FujiŽ reel seat for greater comfort Titanium alloy guides with ultra light Zirconium inserts allow for a lightweight balanced rod 87

Skill Enhancers The Asian Angler

Lure Fishing Basics Twitching

C

Part 7

asting a lure out and retrieving it back without adding action to it do register bites. However, sometimes when the fish are not biting, a different kind of action may register a bits. In this issue let us look at twitching.

Fleeing Bait Fish

Twitching creates an erratic movement of the lure and gives the illusion of a scared, fleeing baitfish. Predators love scared and fleeing prey. The more fear it senses, the more it wants to zero in for the kill. Of course a plastic lure knows no fear and thus it is up to us to create that illusion of fear.

91

How It’s Done

If you were to observe how bait fishes flee from a scary situation you will notice that they dart away from it. This is the type of movement that we want to achieve with twitching. To twitch your lure, simply give it a whip using your wrist. This moves the tip of which in turn makes the lure dart (twitch). Try to keep the darting distance to about a foot and not more.

The Rhythm

Bait fishes seldom dart all over without stopping. Sometimes they dart and stop before darting again. This is one of the things you want to do. I call this the rhythm. You can go twitch and pause (for about 2 seconds), twitch and pause (another 2 seconds); until the lure reaches you. 93

Twitch, twitch, and pause (for about 2 seconds), twitch, twitch, and pause (for about 2 seconds). You can also go twitch, twitch, twitch, and pause. You can also vary your twitching frequencies as well as the timing of pause.

Why Pause

Twitching being an erratic type of movement can make it difficult for the fish to hit the bait. Sometimes they miss. The pause gives them an opportunity to hit the bait. Another way to look at it is that the twitch gets them excited and the pause allows them to go for the kill. 95

Adding Twitch To Straight Retrieve

Last issue we discussed straight retrieve. To add some variation to the retrieve what you can do is to add a twitch here and there during the retrieve. It goes like this; crank about 5 turns and give the lure a twitch. Crank another 5 turns and give another twitch. How many cranks before the twitch is up to you.

Lures To Use

Floating and sinking lures can be twitched. Many frog type lures are made for twitching. Poppers too are made for twitching with the objective of creating a splash or a popping sound.

97

Recommended Rods

Since the reason for twitching the rod is to get the lure to dart, a rod with too soft a tip will be hard to twitch with. You want a rod with a tip that is able to make the lure dart when you twitch. A rod with a mid to mid fast action rod will get the job done (depending on lure type and size).

Summary

When you take up twitching, my recommendation is to use a top water lure as it allows you to see and monitor the length of the dart with every twitch that you do. Next is to create a rhythm and work with it. Note to that different twitching methods work on different fishes and places too. 99

Time To Fish

Hope this article helps you better your lure fishing techniques. Do give it a try and hopefully you catch a fish or more.

All About Hooks: Part 7 Circle Hoo ks

C

ircle hooks are a unique type of hooks. I am sure that when a fish takes your bait the first thing you do is to strike ensuring that the hook penetrates the lip of the fish. When it comes to circle hooks, striking is the surest way to lose the fish.

The Concept

Circle hooks are designed in such a way that the fish hooks itself as it tries to flee. All the angler has to do is to wait for the line to tighten, followed by giving it a few more seconds, and then adding pressure to the fish of which allows the hook to penetrate into the fishes lip as it turns and swims away. The next thing to do is to ensure that the hook is secure by giving the rod a few yanks. 103

n g i s e D ise W

Circle hooks look like most normal hooks you see in the market but with one exception. The point of the circle hook is pointed inwards towards the shank in a way that gives them an awkward look. I wouldn’t be surprised if new anglers were to take a look at circles hooks and think that they are defected.

t o N y h W ike? r t S

With normal hooks the point is pointed upwards or outwards. When the fish takes the bait, the point is thus pointed outwards and ready to latch into any part of the fish’s mouth. But with an inward pointed point (circle hooks), striking will actually pull the bait free of the fishes mouth unless the fish takes a turn at the right time. 105

But without striking the fish feels the pressure from the line as it swims with the bait in its mouth. When it turns the inward pointing point latches onto the side of the fish’s mouth and with added pressure it secures itself. Yanking the rod secures it further.

Salmo Hornet Story - Secretive Rise of a New Classic Legend Part 3

S ome lures come, some lures go. This here is part 3 of the Salmo Hornet story. For part 2, do checkout last month’s issue. To Related Article

,

Ultralight Specialist

My usual set up for the 2.5cm to 4cm Hornets would be a 2-6lb rod of around 6 ft with braid line of 6lb and under or mono of below 4lb. Any ultralight rod of 4-12lb class and below should be good for these snack sized Hornets. Attached with the smallest round snap you can find on the market, they are great lures for streams, canals and small rivers, as well as small water catchment and ponds or just about any small body of water. 109

These cute Hornets caught me plenty of fun sized predatory fish such as sikang (Malayan trout), sebaraus (Hampala Barb) and bujuk (forest snakehead) from streams, while in ponds they have caught lampams (tinfoil barbs), chicilds, haruans (brown snakeheads), peacock bass, siakap (barramundi), catfishes, pacu and the varieties of species pay pond stocked.

In still waters, I just cast and retrieve the Hornet straight with varied speeds and that is all it takes to catch fish. Usually the lure would be cast upstream of any running water area to offset the weight of Hornet’s crazy action and also because the Hornets can perform at any retrieval speeds. 111

Workhorse

The set up I use for 4.5cm, 5cm, and up to 6cm Hornets are usually my medium light to medium heavy setup of about 6 ft 6 inches, with a 6-12lb to 8-17lb line weight. For those above for 6cm I will go with a 8-17lb line weighted rods.

Mainlines of 10lb to a maximum of 30lb braided lines would be ideal to cast and work the Hornets of these size effectively, depending on my targeted area. The 4.5cm and 5cm Hornets are my favorite for pay ponds especially salt water pay ponds as well as larger ponds, rivers, inshore breakwater or rocky sea shores. 113

Whereas the 6cm would normally be used in larger waters like impoundments or great lakes on a boat, also at mangroves, and inshore boating adventures. Groupers are easy targets for Hornets of this size as well as the snakeheads species. In East Malaysia the Hornet is a well known lure used to catch kelah (red mahseer), tengas (Neolissochilus sp.) and most astoundingly is the capture of countless huge badong (large hampala barbs).

To Be Continued

The amounts of groupers caught using these sizes (Hornet lures) is staggering, along with numerous snakeheads, and these are all practically caught during straight constant retrieves, especially when the Hornets bump into structures. These Hornets have also been successful for trolling, owing to their stable swimming action, snag-resistance, as well as virtually indestructible body and hardware. Contents Page

Junior Anglers

By Amirul Irfan

How I started fishing?

I

n this article we will take a look at how my friends started fishing.

Angler : Idlan Mahadi I began fishing on October 6, 2014. While jogging I saw one of our friends (Amirul) fishing with his little brother in a small pond and decided to check them out. I saw Amirul land a haruan on a soft plastic. That was the first time I saw a fish caught on lure. I was hooked since then. I was excited and impressed with the fight. 117

I prefer lure fishing because it is much more fun to me, and I get more satisfaction. I love fishing because I have been following my uncle and sometimes my dad out fishing since I was a child. Maybe the fishing blood runs through my veins, and I feel happy when I catch a fish.

My advice for anyone deciding to try out fishing is to just give it a try. Not catching fish can be disappointing but when you get a fish, happiness kicks in. Next you may start collecting lures, go out fishing more often, because fishing is an addictive sports.

119

Angler : Azrin Ariff I started fishing when I was in primary school. I started fishing at the time because I was bored and decided to follow my dad’s friend for some catfish fishing. Now I prefer lure fishing because my friends have been catching big fishes on lures, and that pushed me to give it a try.

Before I tried lure fishing, I fished for food. Now when I lure fish, it has changed my mindset from fishing for food to fishing as a hobby. I have some advice for anyone deciding to try out this sport, be patient when you are fishing. The fish is not our main target. Our main target should be to enjoy the whole experience. Keep calm and patient. 121

Good luck again and as always practice catch & release and stay safe while fishing. Stay tuned to The Asian Angler.

Coleman Malaysia

Launches Retail Store

C

oleman Malaysia launches its own retail store at the Sunway Pyramid mall at Bandar Sunway showcasing its products from its world famous cooler boxes, to camping and outdoor gear, and bags.

125

Glamping It

To mark the occasion Coleman Malaysia organised an event at the Sunway Pyramid called “Own The Weekend” where they created a camping scenario, or rather “glamping” of which is a more glamorous form of camping. The event showcased Coleman’s camping equipment including tents, camping chairs and tables, entertainment system, iceboxes, lamps, and lots more.

Percussion Music

Coleman brought in the Coleman Percussion Band to entertain visitors to its event. The Coleman Percussion Band creates music using only Coleman items such as cooler boxes, Party Stackers, TeamMate Beverage Cooler, outdoor or camping table, and canteens. 127

They played to famous tunes such as Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk, and Zainal Abidin’s (Malaysian percussionist and singer), Hijau. The band did a really good job especially since their musical instruments were never intended to be musical, and the crowd loved the show.

Games For Children

Coleman had a tub filled with water and little ducks floating on them. Kids got to fish up these ducks within a certain amount of time. Some of these ducks had a tag stuck to them. Kids that fish up a duck with the said tag wins a gift. This game attracted both parents and kids to the event. 129

Successful & Fun Event

All in all the event was a success with lots of visitors trying out the Coleman products that were on display there. I was told that quite a few of their high quality camping chairs, cooler boxes, etc. were sold out during the event.

Coleman Retail Store

LG2.137, Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall No.3, Jalan PJS 11/15, Bandar Sunway, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia.

Coleman products are a plenty in the retail store.

How Not To Lose Your Glasses On Boat Trips

I

f you’ve experienced placing your sunglasses on your cap only to have it fly right off together with your cap into the water while you were on boat trip; this is for you. Most glasses and sunglasses do not float. If they floated you wouldn’t have lost them. I’ve lost a few too over the years.

Floating Straps

These days you can buy floating straps that will float on water. But if you want to wave some money you can make your own with this simple hack. All you need is a aquarium tube (used to blow bubbles in aquariums) of about 2 feet, and a EVA handle (about 4 inches) that is used on bicycle handles, fishing rods, etc. 135

Putting Them Together

First connect one part of the aquarium tube to one of the temple tips of your glasses. Next insert the aquarium tube through the EVA handle. Finally connect the other part of the aquarium tube to the other temple tip of your glasses.

Never Lose Your Glasses Again

EVA floats and will keep your sunglasses or glasses from sinking to the bottom of the lake or sea. With this hack you will never lose your sunglasses or glasses again.

Asam Pedas (Spicy Tamarind) River Prawns

I

f you love prawns and have decided to visit Malaysia and happen to visit Fraser’s Hill or areas around Kuala Kubu Bharu, pay a visit to the Kuala Kubu Bharu or KKB Square. There is a stall there that is famous for its juicy and huge spicy chilli tamarind (asam pedas) sauce river prawns.

Simply Delicious

The prawns used are the giant river prawns also called the blue pincer prawns that are found in many of the rivers in Malaysia. They are available naturally or farmed. The ones cooked here are big and I believe that they are of the farmed variety. Anyhow, they are yummy. 139

Cooking Style

These sumptuous prawns are boiled in the spicy, sweet and sour, chilli, soupy gravy that is so yummy it may blow your brains and make you cry. I meant that literally especially for those who cannot handle chilli well, like me. If you cannot handle chilli well, worry not. Jugs of cold water or fruit cordials are available to quench the fire.

Shells Off

The meat of these prawns are sweet and juicy. This natural sweetness sweetens the soupy gravy adding more flavour to the already flavourful mix of a heavenly dish. The meat is taut although not as taut as those that are not farmed. All said, the asam pedas (spicy tamarind) river prawns dish is delicious. 141

Other Yummies

I would happily just eat the prawn dish with rice but should you want more, you can try their fish (sting ray, scad, etc.) cooked in the same lovely gravy. They may not be the highlight of the place but they are tasty too.

Do Visit

Should you find yourself heading to the historical town of Kuala Kubu Bharu, or up to Fraser’s Hill; do stop at the KKB Square and fill your tummy with this delightfully sumptuous spicy sweet and sour chilly tamarind river prawn dish or as the locals call. “asam pedas udang gala.” Contents Page

A New Dining Experience

H

ave you dined layer by layer? Kai’s Plato offers dining by the layer. This means that various different types of food are stacked up in different compartments one over the other. These foods are then steamed. We then eat them compartment by compartment.

I love things unique and when a friend recommended and talked about Kai’s Plato, I had to pay them a visit. Not long later a plan was hatched to celebrate her (friend who recommended) birthday at Kai’s Plato. I highly recommend going there for a birthday dinner. 145

The Concept

Doing some research I found that this unique dining concept originated in Bongcheon-dong, Seoul, Korea by a small seafood joint where nine layers of steamers were stacked up. This was reported by a Korean TV channel (KBS TV) and soon it spread across Asia.

This concept was brought over here (Malaysia) by Kai’s Plato in February 2015. They started off with more than 11 types of scrumptious fresh seafood sourced locally and internationally; from Korea, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. In Malaysia Kai’s Plato pride themselves as having the most tiers. 147

Natural Sweetness

Here at Kai’s Plato, they serve five tiers. The first tier being oysters, baby abalones (I think), sea snails, decorated with broccoli, placed on a bed of white cabbage. As the steamer cooks these lovely delights, the juices dripped into the second tier.

Tasty, juicy goodness from the sea. 149

Tier 2

Tier two is another group of delicious yummies made up of hard shell clams, bamboo clams (also called razor clams), prawns, squid, and a local delicacy called otak-otak of which is a delicious chilli cake filled with fish meat, chilli, and various herbs and spices. The juices from this tiers drips into tier 3.

Super delicious morsels of sweetness. 151

Tier 3

Tier 3 is filled with juicy mussels covered with a layer of melted cheese, sitting on top of sweet and succulent scallops. Just imagine the sweetness of all these wonderful shell creatures dripping into the next tier.

Cheesy goodness. 153

Cheesy mussels; a fusion of land and sea.

Tier 4

Now we come to the tier where the hard shelled creatures of the sea are cooked. Here we get sweet slipper lobsters and a huge crab with its roes in tack. Any seafood lover knows just how sweet the juices of these crustaceans are. These sweet juices drip into the final tier, tier 5.

155

Slipper lobsters and a huge crab. More sweetness.

Cutting the slipper lobsters to get to the meat. 157

Tier 5

Imagine this. All of the sweet juices from tier one all the way to tier 4 now sitting in tier 5. Are you drooling yet? I am drooling just by typing this article as the memory is still fresh in my mind. Tier 5 came originally in the form of a soup with sand crabs, boiled for 7 to 8 hours; and now with the added sweetness from all the tiers in it.

Super sweet and tasty soup. 159

We were given angel hair pasta to go with the soup. We tasted the soup first without the pasta and it is super delicious. Having it with the pasta didn’t do it justice and thus it was decided that we should just enjoy the soup as it is.

Kai’s Concept

Should you decide to pay Kai’s Plato a visit, do note that their dining concept is “Hands and Table.” This means that you eat with your hands placing the food on the table as this allows you to not only taste the food but to feel them as well, creating a more intimate dining for the food and you.

161

The table will be covered in thick waterproof paper that also acts as a huge plate for food to be placed on. Diners are given tongs to pick up the food from as the food in the steamer is hot. Toothpicks are provided to help remove meat from the shells.

With hands focusing on the food, one’s mobile devices remains untouched throughout the dinner. This is another reason why Kai’s Plato urges you to eat without a spoon, fork, and knife. Interaction on the table is important too and is something that is lacking these days.

163

Dollars & Cents

Sailor Platter (for 2 persons): RM138++ (USD$36.00) Captain Platter (for 4 persons): RM260++ (USD$66.50) Kai’s Jumbo Platter (for 6 persons): RM390++ (USD$100.00) ‘All prices are subject to 10% Service Charge and 6% GST

Activities For The Artistic

Shells and Sharpies are given for one to utilize one’s artistic talent. Our kids had a blast of a time putting their imagination to shells. The walls of Kai’s Plato are decorated with shells drawn by their diners. Shells are reused as pieces of art after they are cooked. 165
