My fellow anglers and friends, We’ve just celebrated our 2nd anniversary and 2015 is so very close. Time certainly flies and waits for no man. I was thinking about this during one of our field testing trips. This is scary stuff . Before you know it graphite fishing rods feel a tonne and we’re talking fishing more instead of going fishing. Anyway, back to this month’s issue. We tested a few rods and some of them really stood out. We wanted to see how much the new Shakespeare Ugly Stik Elite can take and we were surprised by its capabilities. Another rod is that we enjoyed messing with is the Kewl Marushin. Dragon groupers? Bring them on. There are also new product launches by Sea Tackle, Pure Fishing, and Brilliant Tackle. Sea Tackle launched more lures recently while Pure Fishing launched its new Japanese market Berkley soft baits as well as the Havoc (finally). Brilliant Tackle had a brilliant idea and launched a shark rig. Having this framed in one’s fishing tackle room makes a good enough statement. There are a lot more interesting stuffs to checkout in this issue and I hope you enjoy reading it and watching the videos. Oh yes! Time really does fly by. Spend more time doing what you like... Pick up your fishing rod and go catch that fish with a bunch of fishing buddies. Thank you for your support and happy reading. Cheers, Phil Editor In Chief

Penn Sargus II The Game Changer

T

he Penn Sargus is the reel that turned things around for Penn establishing Penn spinning reels with the hallmark of quality and toughness. The Sargus is also the platform that the Penn Battle and Penn Fierce spinning reels are built on. That was back in 2008. Following the success of the Sargus, Penn recently launched the new Sargus II. Earlier model, the Penn Sargus

21

Added

Toughness The Penn Sargus II has a tough act to follow and it followed well. The Sargus II comes in a tough metal shell of which can take a beating protecting the gears and everything else inside. This rigidity allows the gears to be kept in precise alignment even under heavy loads. Its rigid qualities continue towards the tough stainless steel shaft, reel stem, and reel foot. There is no (unfelt) flex especially at the reel stem and foot area and this is important when battling a brute of a fish. The solid / rigidity of the main shaft makes cranking easier and gives the angler better confidence during the battle.

23

Language Of Power

The Sargus II comes with a solid spool made of anodized aluminium. Anodizing increases corrosion and wear resistance. It also prevents oxidization from taking place all of which are qualities important to saltwater purposed reels.

What speaks muscles more than a thick and tough looking bail-wire. The bailwire of the Sargus II looks more muscular and tougher than the one used with the earlier Sargus. It looks like it was built on steroids. Such toughness will indeed overcome roughness.

25

Smooth & Balanced

Although the Sargus II comes with 5+1 stainless steel bearings it is a smooth and well balanced reel all thanks to Penn’s proven Techno-Balanced Rotor system and precise gearing. There are smoother reels in the market but for reels within the Sargus II’s price range and with its tough qualities, the Sargus II sits on the top.

27

t s e T Lab

We were handed the Penn Sargus II SG2000 of which comes with a rated 7lb max drag. Back at our lab we put the Sargus II through a torturous pressure test to squeeze out every inch of juice within it. We managed to get the drag all the way up to over 9lb before feeling some deterioration in smoothness. The drag maxed out at slightly over 11lb (4lb above rated max drag).

29

t s e T d l e i F We took the Sargus II to Pekan (east coast coastal town of the Malaysian Peninsular) for a field test targeting ebek (diamond trevallies) of which will be a challenge. The Sargus II took battle upon battle without fault. It performed really well landing about 4 diamond trevallies with the largest one being slightly over 9kg.

33

t c i d Ver The Penn Sargus II may not score high with its looks but when a tough reel is needed, the Sargus II excels. Even under heavy pressure the Sargus II feels planted and confident. It is one of the best reels within its price range.

lot of anglers these days like rods that reflect their personalities. For the sporty angler that likes to keep things less loud with subtle touch of classiness, the Kewl Marushin Rod is one to ponder over. The Kewl Marushin rod is like the Caterham Super 7 cars. They look classic yet very modern.

* The James Bond theme actually played while I was looking at the Marushin. 39

Classical

Sportiness Combining carbon fibre and cork dished out with a reasonably lightweight carbon graphite rod blank brings about a world of classical sportiness. This combination plus the use of X scrim wrapping makes the Marushin a rod to savour with the classical theme of James Bond playing in the background. Seriously, give this a try.

41

Good Balance Picking up the rod alone, the Marushin feels tip heavy. Combining a reel to it magically balances it and the weight disappears. This gives the Marushin a superb feel allowing for long hours of casting before tiring out. Sound like a tool that 007 would like to have in his box of toys during his off days.

43

Good Blank The Marushin’s blank has loads of power in them with a good flex. It has a very strong backbone that makes it a good rod for many types of fishing. The tip fights to springs back to its original position when it is flexed. This sort of power helps with fish management.

45

Fuji Quality When it comes to components, Fuji components are trusted worldwide. The Marushin comes equipped with Fuji guides and reel seat offering one of the best combinations of components thus making the Marushin a well built quality rod at good value for money.

47

r e d n U

e r u s Pres

Back at our lab we put the Marushin through the torture test. The model we had with us for testing purposes is the FCC-662M rated 10-20lb. We cranked up the reel drag until we hit almost maximum and then we flex the rod at a 45 degree angle and moving backwards slowly. We managed to get the Marushin to hit almost 16lb and that is plenty enough for most types of fishing.

49

t s e T d l e i F

Good

Castability We field tested the Marushin at a commercial fishing pond in Jugra, Banting (small coastal town off Selangor) where hard fighting brutes such as dragon groupers, red drums, barramundis, and trevallies stay in wait for a battle.

The Marushin flexes and whips lures out making every cast a satisfying one (unless the angler screws up somewhere). Give the Marushin an easy whip of the tip and lures start shooting out to really good distances. This helps is great as it helps cover more water with every cast when blind casting for elusive fishes.

51

Power To Stop

It didn’t take long for the Marushin to be in battle when a dragon grouper hit my lure. However, I wasn’t familiar with the battle field and the brute swam right into some snag. Not long later another dragon grouper got hooked. The Marushin certainly has loads of power. After losing my first dragon grouper to the snags I decided to thumb the spool harder as the shot towards the same snag. The Marushin managed to turn the brute and I dragged it out of the danger zone. Not long later we were posing for the camera.

53

Verdict

The Kewl Marushin is an impressive rod that is well built and has loads of power and then more in reserve. While we only managed to get it up to 15.5lb in the lab, it did exceptionally well on the field. I certainly am impressed with its capabilities.

W

hen it comes to fishing rods, I have seen all sorts of names given to them from snakehead series for catching snakeheads to bass series for catching, well...bass. Here comes one called Snapper for fishing snappers perhaps, but that would be boring. So we though, sailfish perhaps... 59

Bits And Bobs The Penn Snapper rod is a boat type rod made to do some heavy lifting. It is one of those modern boat rods with good ergonomics, balance, and does not weigh a tonne. It has lots of power built into it with a strong backbone perhaps to shows those giant red snappers who the boss is.

61

Good Fit The Snapper feels comfortable in the hands thanks to its ergonomically designed compact EVA handle. They are not too thick as with some boat rods nor are they too thin. These handles are fit nicely reducing incidence of rod slips. A good grip allows for added confidence and better control especially during battles with finned monsters.

63

Tough & Powerful The Penn Snapper rod is like a sexy monster truck adorn in metallic red and gold threads over a glossy black finished blank. Its 24ton graphite rod blank is tough and comes with a powerful backbone stretching 80% to 85% of the rod providing lots of power to handle most brutes.

65

Fuji

Components

The Snapper comes complete with Fuji reel seats to hold your reel secure in place and Fuji Alconite guides that are lighter, stronger, and tougher as compared to copycat Fuji guides. These components do make a difference when you’re in a battle out at sea. Another good thing about Alconite guides is that they will handle braided lines well.

67

t s e T e r u s Pres

The Penn Snapper rod we tested is rated 20-50lb. We managed to get about 40lb out of it before but the reel used couldn’t give us more drag. That happened 3 times and we decided to stop. The rod certainly can take more but to reach 50lb, I am not too sure. Even at 40lb the bend was closing in onto the fore grip. 50lb without breaking perhaps but the rods power would have been long drained.

69

t s e T d l e i F

We tested the Snapper in Rompin (coastal waters east of the Malaysian peninsular) pitting it against sailfish. The Snapper handled battle after battle really well clearly being in control throughout. We forced the Snapper really hard at every battle and it came through really well. At the end of our test the Snapper emerged winner over the sailfishes while we rested our sore muscles.

71

t c i d Ver

A good boat rod with lots of power but if you get it to 50lb of pressure, I believe that the bend will be past the reel seat with the Snapper not feeling so good anymore. Still more than enough power to handle brutes and perhaps one day we will test it on other brutes.

The Chief follows the styling of American bass rods with muscular butt sections tapering down towards the tip. The chief has strong backbone that gives The Chief the power and ability needed to control the brutes. Being in control is what The Chief is all about.

The Chief feels comfortable when held and the grip is good. The EVA handle is contoured from the reel seat tapering down slightly making slimmer and easier on the grip. The butt of the Major Stix is rounded and flattened off right at the end. A metallic red ring with the inscription “Major Stix on it sits inconspicuously right before the rounded section giving it a little bling and needed weight behind.

81

o T d n A r e w Po

s s e n h g u

s

Weight wise, The Chief is heavier at the tip section as with many lure casting rods. This is also due to its blank being built with thicker walls. A thicker blank wall means toughness and better durability but with these benefits comes the added bit of weight. The Chief is not heavy but it is not light either. The Chief is made to yank fish out of cover (areas with snags). Fishes such as haruans (brown snakehead / Channa striata) that ambush fishes from cover will find The Chief to be a strong contender to battle with. Tomans (giant snakehead / Channa micropeltes) on the other hand will find it a challenge shooting towards snags. 83

Fuji Components

Enhancing The Chief further are the components that it comes fitted with. The Chief comes with high quality Fuji components from its semi micro guides to its reel seat. These quality components are durable and tough with guides being able to handle braided lines and a reel seat that holds the reel firmly in place without slipping.

85

Lab Testing Torturing tackle is part of our job and The Chief had to be tortured too. The Chief has a 14-30lb rating. We managed to get it up to about 22.4lb with scary sounding acoustics playing within the blank of the rod before pulling the plug. I believe that it can take more but to reach 30lb will be the life of The Chief will be literally “hanging by a thread.

87

t s e T d l Fie

Fishing with palm sized tilapia as bait, The Chief cast really well. As expected the blank had loads of power and we had no issues managing the brutes (Amazon red tail catfish). The Chief managed to turn heads especially important since we were fishing very near the stilts of the restaurant. We managed to stop all of the brutes that ran towards these stilts. It did well on the test.

89

Verdict The Chief is a tough rod following the styles of American bass rods with a strong backbone. It is a good rod for fishing in places where the need to stop fishes as well as to yank them out of cover is needed. I am not sure if it will take 30lb of pressure but it sure has enough power for most types of fishing.

hakespeare seems to be embracing modern technology, designing more modern rods. They have taken the route less travelled bringing both graphite and fibreglass rods (of which they are known for) together. One rod that sits on these quadrants is the Shakespeare Ugly Stik Elite, a modern graphite rod with a clear fibreglass tip.

95

r e k o o L k Slee

The Elite is a sleek looking rod coming in a matte black blank with thin metallic dark red and silver criss-cross threading. It comes with cork handle using a mixture of natural and artificial corks, thank God lesser of the later. Guides are gun-metal chromed adding to its elegant looks.

97

k n a l B h c e T y Ugl

The Elite’s blank comes with Shakespeare’s Ugly Tech blank construction that uses more fibreglass as compared to most other modern rods that are made of graphite. This gives good amounts of flexibility and toughness, yet it increases the weight of the rod. Somehow the Elite’s weight is not as heavy as expected and falls within acceptable limits.

99

Clear Eglass Tip Talking about tips, the Elite come with a clear fibreglass tip that is flexible and gives better sensitivity. This makes it a superb rod for crankbait fishing as well as for bottom fishing. The slightest disturbance to the bait would cause the tip to twitch signalling a fish playing with the bait.

101

Components

The Elite comes with the Ugly Tuff stainless steel guides that are tough and without guide inserts as the entire guide is built as a piece. It comes with contoured graphite reel seat that gives a good grip and feels great, and the cork handles comes stamp with the Ugly Stik brand.

103

Castability

Our first field test was at the Hulu Langat Fishing Resort. It cast crankbaits and various other lures really well. However we didn’t manage to attract any takers. Casting balls of dough bait did.

105

107

Battling Brutes We were torturing Mekong catfishes using the 6-14lb medium powered model. The Elite has enough power to manage them thanks to its graphite section. We forced the rod really hard to see its curve.

Understandably it doesn’t curve well as the fibreglass tip is soft and it stiffens up as we reach the graphite section. The area where the ferule is located is stiffer and that too is less flexible, still it has very good lifting power and it fights really well.

109

Field Test Saltwater We next field tested the Elite at a commercial saltwater fishing pond in Jugra, Banting (small coastal town off Selangor) where we battled dragon groupers and the hard fighting red drums. Here we decided to torture the Ultra Light model of the Elite.

Even the Ultra Light model is impressive. It has very good amounts of lifting power for its stature and we managed to take on and land two hard fighting red drums and a dragon grouper. All testers were amazed at the capability of the Elite.

111

113

Verdict The Shakespeare Elite is a nice rod to cast. Great for crankbaits and bottom fishing. Has very good amounts of lifting power and both rods tested managed to subdue very hard fighting fishes. I am personally amazed by its capabilities and so are those who had the opportunity to field test it.

It also comes with strong chains in place of a leader. The use of a chain is needed as sharks are known to have really sharp teeth that can easily cut off almost every type of mono leaders.

Fishing Crankbaits: Part 1

By Jon B. Jon is an avid angler currently bsaed in Ohio, USA

I

t’s safe to say the majority of bass anglers have heard of crankbaits. Most of which vary in all styles, depths, and sizes that come into play during specific points in the bass fishing season. Each type of crank plays a vital role for an angler and is designed for certain situations whether it be during the early frigid spring months or right before the summer leaves fall from their branches.

Unfortunately not all cranks produce the same results, in fact it’s key that an angler uses specific types of cranks in order to match different fishing patterns. Thankfully there are a variety of crankbait styles making it easier for angler to choose the correct lure for the appropriate fishing applications. A prime example of a few specific styles of crankbaits that tends to land fish all throughout the bass fishing season are square bill crankbait, lipless crankbaits, and deep diving crankbait. 163

When spring begins to knock off some of the lingering ice on your favorite lake it is time to start using reaction lures. One crankbait that seems to excel quite well when water temperatures are on the rise and fish begin getting back into their heavy feeding pattern is the squarebill crankbait. A squarebill crankbait is usually two to three inches long and earns its name due to the clear bill on the front of the bait that looks like a small square. Squarebills are usually meant to reach water depths ranging from 4ft-6ft of water and are designed to search and cover a large area of shallow water where aggressive bass roam.

165

These little crankbaits are great for banging up against rocks and logs where fish often like to hang out and are notorious for their ability to be fished in tight corners where most cranks would get hung up and busted. Squarebills are extremely versatile, they can be fished around docks, rip-rap, pile-ons, laydowns, and brushpiles. It is best to throw a squarebill when you are positive the fish are feeding on baitfish or other live fish prey.

Once you’ve been able to tell whether or not the fish are feeding on baitfish your next step is to determine what kind of baitfish the bass are feeding on. This step is important and plays a huge role in choosing the right color and style of squarebill as it is for any type of crankbait fishing. An example of this would be to research what kind of fish species inhabit the lake you plan on fishing.

167

If you discover that there are shad in the lake you’ve researched chances are the bass will be more attracted to a 3in squarebill in a light color pattern that mimics a shad such as white, pearl, silver, light blue, chartreuse, and many others. Don’t be mislead by the fact that the crankbait color have to look exactly like the baitfish color pattern, most of time the colors that are most off-beat will land the most fish.

169

A few things you may want to make sure you have before you start throwing a squarebill is the ideal casting setup. A 7’-7’ 2” medium heavy or heavy action glass or composite rod is perfect for a squarebill crank and will allow you yank some of those hard fighting fish out of tight cover before getting tangled up. It’s important to use a slower gear ratio reel so that you are able to maintain a steady pace when cranking your squarebill back to the boat or shore. Baitcasting reels that have a deep spool with plenty of line capacity and a low gear ratio such as a 5.4:1 is perfect for the squarebill application.

Well, try out these ideas and have fun on the drink. We’ll explore further in part 2.

Fish Attractant (Scent): Part 1

By Philemon Foo

I

remember the first time I used something to attract fish to take my bait. I cycled to the sundry shop near my place and bought a bottle of Seven Seas fish oil, not for eating because I hated fish oil, but for fishing. The thought process was simple. Fish comes for the bait because it smells something it wants to eat. I was much, much, much younger then and that was how I analysed things.

Well, those oiled filled capsules worked sometimes and sometimes they didn’t. So I put one and one together thought perhaps fishes are like humans and variety is key. So I tried other fishy things as a means of attracting fish. Of course I didn’t know what I know now although they go along the same lines. 173

What Is Scent For the purpose of writing, we will stick with the word scent. Scent is basically something that is smelled. It can be perfume or cologne as used by us humans. Oh not forgetting pheromones used by most if not all in the animal kingdom for various reasons. It can come from flowers, fruits, and almost everything found on earth.

Use Of Scent Scent can be used to attract thus the word attractant in fish attractant. Scent can also be used to repel as in the case of the stinky skunk. Scent is also used to signal certain things such as the readiness to mate. Another use of scent is to mask other scents of which are less pleasant.

175

Does Scent Really Work For Fishing Do men get attracted to the scent of fine perfume used by a lady? Yeah! Scent works. Many anglers have used them successfully in fishing tournaments around the world. Of course they work. But sometimes they don’t. You’re fishing beside someone who is catching lots of fish and you’re not but you’re the only one using scent. Something must be wrong in this scenario, right?

How Does Scent Work? When it comes to fishing, scent works two ways. One is to attract a nearby fish to investigate the bait. The other is to mask any unpleasant scents or rather odours that keeps fishes away such as the scent of humans (predator), cigarette smoke, gasoline, etc. In this case scent is used to neutralize other odours thus not scaring away fishes from the bait.

177

Fish Don’t Bite?

Yes, there are times when scent is used but without success although fishes are around. As mentioned earlier scent also can act as a deterrent. Some scents could cause fish to turn away and be wary. This happens when the scent used is something that the fishes in the waters that you are fishing in are not used to. Instead of attracting them the scent turns on their guard and they shy away.

179

Not All Fish Are Created Equal

Another reason why scent may not work is that because the fishes in the water you are fishing in do not pick up on the scent trail. Some fishes are more sensitive and they pick up scents easily. Some are just not as sensitive. An example would be catfishes being more sensitive as they have barbells that pick up scent while other fishes like snakeheads are less sensitive.

This means that if you are fishing in a pond filled with snakeheads and catfish, chances of you catching snakeheads with the help of scent has dropped significantly as the catfish will pick up on the scent and take the bait before the snakeheads even know that the baits are there.

181

To Summarize...

Scent or fish attractant do work but there are a few factors to consider for them to be used successfully. Using scent is like using lures. Experience play apart and with that I mean, experience fishing a certain spot. Not all scent will work at one lake. It will depend on what attracts the fishes. More in next month’s issue...

Get Your Kids Fish An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine

Fishing is a very healthy sport.

As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc. There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life. With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a section of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

Fishing Buddies: Fishing

By Amirul Irfan

Bonds People

A

fter my PMR (PenilaianMenengahRendah) exam in 2013, I decided to enjoy my holidays and enjoy every second I had with fishing. I was determined to be a better angler, fish harder and catch my first snakehead. The months after the exam were great and is still going good until now. I have made many friends from various countries and backgrounds. These friends have inspired me in many ways.

205

Here is one of my buddies I have been fortunate to fish with. He has been fishing for 2 months now. He’s really keen about lure fishing and it’s my pleasure to guide him.2 weeks ago he bought a baitcaster and he’s saving up for a rod to pair with it.

207

Here’s another buddy, Khairul. He has shown me many good spots to fish at. I am very thankful for that. He fishes a lot and I’ve picked up some snakehead hunting skills from him.

209

Here’s my uncle with his first fish on lure, a grouper on the Abu Garcia Tormentor. I have fished a lot with him since I was a young child. I remember fishing for climbing perch with him and some other family members. I was young and oblivious. All I had in my head was bass, so I kept casting a soft plastic grub without catching anything but snags.

211

Here’s me and my friend, Fikri. I’ve spent a lot of time fishing with him too. Fikri has lost a few haruans on lures but he is working his way to hooking one. Being classmates for three years, we shared many fishing stories together and learned a lot from each other.

213

Taking some friends fishing. They are really passionate and it makes me happy to help them. In my opinion, my friend Azrin, in the green shirt is the most passionate of them. He lives far from where I live, but he is planning to take a bus in the morning and fish with me. That’s pure passion.

215

This is Mr.Jimmy, owner of JIMS Pro Tackle. Age does not matter in angling. I’ve been friends with him after visiting his shop in Batang Kali. He is very friendly, and he has taught me a lot of things about fishing from custom rods all the way to how a certain predatory fish eats.

217

Fishing is going good for me. I’ve hooked countless haruans since the last article. This cute haruan was hooked on the Berkley 3’’ T-Tail Minnow in pink. A quick cast into some flooded grass area was all it took to trigger a strike from this haruan.

219

Here’s a larger haruan, on the same bait. I used a texas rigged 2/O Fire Eagle EWG Hook which I fished weightless. I noticed some commotion caused by two to three haruans hunting in a pack. I have never seen anything like that before. I made a cast into the commotion and I hooked this haruan. I used 10lb Stren Hi-Impact monofilament line and had no problem to pull this haruan out of thick weeds.

221

This haruan was hooked on a Zman Diezel Minnow Z 4’’ in the nuked chicken colour. I used a 4/0 hook and texas rigged it. Fishing it weightless amongst grass is fun because I get to enjoy some topwater explosions.

223

This is my first fish on a popper. Trying out a lure I’ve never used proved to be successful. The water was really murky and I decided to try out the DUO Realis Popper 64.After 10 minutes of fishing, a haruan hit the popper and gave a good fight before being landed.

October 2014 Winner: An Unexpected Day Name: Lim Yi Xuan IC No.: t0120517f Age: 13

I

t was the June holidays. My friend, Glenn, and I planned for a first light trip on Friday night. He also invited his friend, Aloysius, to join us. It was awkward at first but soon it felt like we knew each other for months. We arrived at first light, water was calm and it wasn’t as crowded. We started by using hard baits and soft plastics. 2 hours in and no takes at all. It was unusual as we normally get a fish or 2 after 2 hour. We changed locations and soon the sky got dark. Aloysius checked his phone and said the rain is coming. So we headed to a nearby coffee shop to wait for the rain to pass.

Congratulations

231

It rained cats and dogs and we waited for a long period of time. It was still drizzling but we decided to head out to get a fish. We didn’t expect much but after 15 minutes there were frenzies everywhere. You could see the fish jumping around grabbing baitfish. They were taking any lure that we throw at them. There were so many fish that we even got a panta hook up(five fish hooked by five anglers at the same time) Since they were hitting everything I decided to swap to a popper. 5 minutes in and BOOM 4 pounder peacock whacked my popper. At the end of the day over 50 fishes were landed among us and by far this was the most craziest and bizarre fishing day up to date. I went home and hoped that one day the same thing would happen and until now I’m still waiting.

Coarse Fishing Competition Ire Part 1: What’s The Craic?

eland

By Tengku Izzudin @ The Guv’nor

Ireland! Always wanted to come here after seeing many photos of Nuddy with 2 netfulls of bream and roach in the 90s when I was studying in the UK. Finally made it after nearly 20 years, and to fish the World Pairs Angling Championship too. I’ll be fishing against some of the best match anglers around, including the current World Feeder Champs team members from England, what was I thinking eh?! Having set 2 modest goals of trying not to blank on any of the days and to not finish last in the championship, hope I’ll catch a few! Possibly adhering to Malaysia’s long fine sporting tradition of not winning anything, I’m here to enjoy the fishing and the craic!

235

After a really long haul flight from Kuala Lumpur we headed straight to sunny Devon with Steve and Bobbie Lockett where I stayed at their beautiful home for a couple of nights. After trying my best to earn my keep by clearing their shed and tying hooklengths, we went for a warm up session at Town House fishery catching some small roach and a ghostie.

237

Rented a van, loaded it up with tackle and off to Holyhead to catch the ferry to Dublin. Met Michael Buchwalder on the ferry, and got some good tips from 2013’s Drennan Knock Out cup winner.

239

Travelled quite a few miles already on the van to reach Fenagh, chauffeur driven of course. Taking in all the beautiful countryside and scenery along the way, what an amazing place this is!

241

Checked in at The Old Rectory, a real nice cosy place in Fenagh. Padraic the owner was there to greet us and showed us around. The Garden Cottage will be my home for the next week. Some good old Irish rain didn’t want to miss out in welcoming my arrival.

243

Training Day!

Had a pratice session at Kiltybardan which was closest to where we were staying. Really needed it to get a feel for the tackle and the setup (I’m borrowing Steve’s kit by the way). After figuring out how to put on the chest waders on properly (Steve’s waders came up to me ears!), I got my first taste of Irish fishing with some nice small hybrids eager to feed on the feeder.

245

Met up with my partner, Kevin Locke. It was kind of a blind date, I did not have a partner from Malaysia so the organisers paired us together. Kevin is a really experienced match angler (really nice bloke too) and immediately some tips were shared. If you add the both of us together and divide by half, you’d probably get the size of an average angler.

247

Second day in Ireland, and we headed off to Enniskillen to look at some venues and the town there, got some decent photos and then popped in at Tackle and Bait to do a bit of shopping and met John Potters , the only angler who has won the Classic twice. He says everyone knows about me now through FB which I thought was quite embarrassing!

249

Pumphouse Practice Session!

We drove to Lough Scur @ Pumphouse for a quick fish on the way back. This time I set up just the pole to get a feeling for it, but holding a 13m pole with a side wind is not my idea of a good time! Caught a few on my 5m line loosefeeding casters all the time.

251

Stopped at The Forge (Steve’s favourite shop) to say hello to Gabriel and picked up a few souvenirs.

253

Finally met up with the Ringers who just came back from their practice match, makes a nice change seeing them in person and not on the internet. A quick snapshot with the feeder world champions ought to get the lads back home green with envy ;)

The Ringers, top feeder anglers and hot tub aficionados.

255

The locals are friendly!

257

Opening night at the Standing Stone hotel. Was greeted at Ryan and Tony Kersley at the door, they made me feel welcomed, then was called over by the reigning pairs champs Cathal & Jacko for a chat. All the big names and legends whom I till now only saw in mags and online were there! Everyone was very friendly and shared useful tips and wished me luck but I politely reminded them not to put any money on me! After the opening speeches we continued with the rotation draws. I drew no5 so Kevin and I will start our campaign at Ballynamore. I can’t wait to get started!

Cathal & Jacko, the men to beat!
